BROOKWOOD MALL FOOD COURT “Wrestling with Romans…and Hell Too” No doubt Romans contains some of the more difficult passages to inter- pret in the New Testament. Is God wrathful? Are we always to submit to government? Is all Israel going to be saved? Did God really hate Esau and, if so, does He hate others? These and other challenging questions have been raised through study of this grand epistle. In addition, the most discussed theological topic of this year has been about hell. This hot button (no pun intended) was pressed by the publication of Rob Bell’s book, Love Wins. But the issue of hell has been discussed throughout the church’s history, and it is important to explore this discussion through the ages. Dr. Jim Barnette, Teaching pastor, will address these topics in a series entitled “Wrestling with Romans…and Hell Too.” The series will begin on Wednesday evening, September 7. Children’s Ministry Interim Structure As we are all saddened by Lindsey’s leaving us we are beginning to work on a plan for the “interim” time. The Children’s Ministry Team has been meeting for many weeks now serving as an advisory group in the search for a new Children’s Minister. Over 50 resumes have been received and, fortu- nately, many of those people have wonderful qualifications and life experiences. In addition to the search the team is making plans for this interim time. Kelly Thomas, our administrative assistant for Preschool and Children’s min- istries will be serving as a “point person” now. She is here in the office every day and will be able to answer many questions and find the answer for those which she cannot quickly provide an answer for. Kelly is highly qualified to help us in this area as she has both a Bachelor’s and Master’s from Samford University in Childhood Education and has several years of teaching experi- ence. In addition to Kelly Thomas we will also have the great work of Patrick O’Connor again as our Children’s Minis- try Intern. He is greatly loved by our kids and greatly respected by our parents. Patrick is a ministerial stu- dent at Samford University and plans to be engaged in Children’s Ministry in a full time and permanent capacity after gaining his education. Our Children’s Worship experience will be led by Susan Weaver. Susan is a relatively new member of our congregation and brings a vast experience in worship and music to this role. We are very grateful for our Children’s Ministry Team and their leadership during this interim time. When you get an opportunity, please say thanks to: Shelley Faulkner, Philip Holley, Kathy Sanders, Amanda Tindall, Aimee Forbus, Lianne Hand and Stacey Gilbert. Folks Like Us… Too often, the Bible seems like it’s full of either folks we’d never want to be, or folks we never could be. No one names their son Judas or their daughter Jezebel. Even fewer parents name their son Jesus or even Gideon. Yet the Bible tells us that Elijah was a “man just like us.” Fran Sciacca, Lead Teacher for Hands of Hur, will return to Brookwood this fall to lead us through a study of 10 people in the Bible who were “folks just like us.” We’ll examine Job, Adam, Paul, Jezebel, and six others whose lives we should emulate or avoid. The study will run September 7-November 16. MEN’S BIBLE STUDY Thursdays, beginning September 22 @ 6:00 a.m. Building D (Tim Clark’s home) Continental Breakfast will be served Limited Registration!
