Not long ago, Terry Betteridge found himself within the depths of the Rolex factory in Geneva. “Their place is beyond James Bond—it’s like walking into Q’s laboratory. You go through retinal scans. They have huge glass walls where you see racks of parts and machines moving them all around. When a watchmaker seven floors up calls for a screw, a robot automatically retrieves it.”

All this futuristic machinery goes into making the most durable and reliable watches on Earth. It’s no wonder that Chuck Yeager wore a Rolex when he broke the sound barrier in 1947. Or that Sir Edmund Hillary wore one while crossing Antarctica in 1955-58. Or that James Cameron wore a Rolex Deepsea on his recent, record-breaking dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Rolex watches have been to the bottom of the ocean and to the top of Everest. “And yet Rolex is never satisfied,” says Terry. “Their lab does everything to try and improve these watches, to make each year better than the last.”

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a woman in possession of a wrist must be in want of a Cartier. Certainly that’s the case at Betteridge, where Cartier is by far the most popular women’s wristwatch. “Not only is it a stunning piece of jewelry, but it’s also a superbly functioning watch,” declares Win Betteridge.

A masculine dress favorite for the most discriminating watch aficionado? Try A. Lange & Söhne, often said to be the world’s most beautifully constructed watch. “Lange combines incredibly good engineering with an artist’s touch,” Terry says. “There’s a Germanic pride and attention to detail in every watch that is extraordinary.”

Panerai, with its distinctive bold, clear dials, has a cult following that is second to none. “They were built for Italian dive teams to be perfectly visible underwater and to function in very tough environments,” Terry explains. “For the past decade, we have begged Panerai to sell us more watches. Because they are so popular, we never have more than a few to display in the case.”

Every wristwatch Betteridge carries fills a particular niche. Audemars Piguet is renowned for its iconic, luxury sport watches. IWC is known for its high-performance pilot watches. Chanel is beloved for its more contemporary ladies’ dress watches inhigh-tech ceramic. TAG Heuer’s sturdy sport watches are favorites among the divingcrowd—and can be had at great values. Whatever your tastes and lifestyle, ask Betteridge to unite you with the timepiece of your dreams.

Shopping for a vintage watch is much like treasure hunting: It involves a bit of luck and a lot of being in the right place at the right time. When you look inside the Betteridge vintage watch case, you’ll see that we make the job easier for you by putting all our favorite discoveries in one place for you to explore. You never know what you’ll find, and the value of buying a pre-owned watch cannot be matched.

“As I travel the world looking for the rarest and most exciting timepieces ever made, my goal is to share the same sense of discovery and excitement with you that I feel when finding a unique watch,” Terry Betteridge says. “But be warned. The more you learn about watches, the more addicted you’ll become to the idea of owning a collection yourself!”

Next time you’re in the Greenwich store, notice the collectors hovering around the pre-owned watch case and you’ll understand what Terry means. “When you look inside this wall case, you’ll be treated to a revolving museum of timepieces ranging from the Art Deco to modern masterpieces. I emphasize ‘revolving’ because many pieces only sit in the case for a few hours before finding a new home.”

Estate watches are a special passion at Betteridge—because horological artistry and mechanical brilliance excite us, deeply. In the pages that follow, you will see rare finds from three of our favorite manufacturers—Patek Philippe (a ‘Grand Complication’ watch with stunning celestial dial), A. Lange & Söhne (a coveted ‘Luna Mundi’ pair) and IWC (a limited production minute repeater). Our estate watch collection is refreshed and refined constantly, resulting in a selection that represents best in class offerings at a panoply of price points.

Patek Philippe Ref. 725 Perpetual Calendar Pocket Watch

Originally retailed by Tiffany & Co., this vintage pocket watch is one of Patek’s finest. All 48 months of the leap year cycle are displayed boldly on the subdial at 12 o’clock, and the enamel night sky stands in brilliantly stark contrast to the polished gold moon. In pristine condition from the 1950s, this masterpiece is ready to be engraved for the first time ever.

Patek Philippe Ref. 3970J & 5004R Perpetual Calendar Chronographs

Patek’s perpetual calendar chronographs are often referred to as the “Holy Grail” of watch collecting, beloved by aficionados for the complexity of the movement combined with the elegance of the dial and case.

“ Patek Philippe is the undisputed champion when it comes to retaining value on the secondary market.”

A. Lange & Söhne Grand Lange 1 “Luna Mundi”

The “Luna Mundi” watch set correctly displays the waxing and waning of the moon on either side of the equator. The pair of watches in white and pink gold was only sold together, and the edition was limited to 101 sets.

A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Tourbillon

Launched in 2000 to celebrate the new millennium, A. Lange & Söhne produced a limited series of 250 Lange 1 Tourbillons in pink gold. The watch is renowned for being one of the most beautiful tourbillons ever produced.

IWC Grand Complication

If you managed to combine nearly all of the greatest achievements in watchmaking together in a single extraordinary timepiece, then you would have IWC’s Grand Complication. The watch features a perpetual calendar with four-digit year display, a perpetual motion moon phase display and chronograph. Best of all, when activated by the slide on the left side of the case, the minute repeater chimes out the time in wonderfully melodic tones.

“ It took IWC seven years of research to determine how to fit so many complications into an elegant, wearable wristwatch.”
