TENA Technical DrivingTENA Technical DrivingRequirementsRequirements

n Interoperability – the ability of independently developed anddeployed systems to seamlessly work together and exchangeinformation to solve a user’s problemn Interoperability is required

n Between range resourcesn Across phases of the acquisition, test, and training processesn Between range resources and C4ISR resourcesn Between range resources and simulations

n Reuse – the ability to use a system or a software application orcomponent at sites or in test or training events other thanthose in which the software was originally designed tooperate.n Reuse implies

n Componentization and modularityn Standard, documented interfacesn Encapsulation of legacy capabilities

Slide 10

Foundation Initiative 2010Foundation Initiative 2010Project ObjectivesProject Objectives

n Define a common Architecture for the test/training rangecommunity – called “TENA” (Test & Training Enabling Architecture)n Define a common Object Model to be used across the rangesn Define and build a common Software Middleware that will:

n Comply with the architecturen Use the object modeln Build on the HLAn Enhance interoperability and reuse among the ranges

n Common understanding of range processes– the Logical Range ConOps

n Provides a common understanding to range users how logical ranges are created(from the integration of range resources), what their capabilities are, and how theyare utilized, operated, and controlled

n Define and prototype common Tools to configure and conductmulti-range, synthetic test events or training exercisesn Create distributed, synthetic battlespaces with real weapon systemsn Link multiple ranges together to form a larger, cohesive rangen Enable testing, assessment, experimentation, and training of weapon

system interoperability, C4ISR, and system-of-systems

IKE 2 Design ApproachIKE 2 Design Approach

n IKE 2 presents to the range user a unification of several powerfulinter-application communication paradigms

n Publish/Subscriben Similar in effect to HLA, DIS, and other PDU-based communication systemsn Each application publishes certain types of information (the publication state)

which can be subscribed to by any other application

n Remote Method Invocationn Similar to CORBA or Java RMIn Each object that is published may have methods that can be remotely invoked

by other applications

n Messagesn Individual messages that can be sent from one application to one or more other

applications

n Data Streamsn Native support for audio, video, and telemetry

n Architecture must support system-wide quality of servicerequirements (e.g., latency, predictability, reliability)n Software must support diverse and often dynamic operating conditionsn Leverage existing standards and implementations

Logical RangeLogical RangeSimple ExampleSimple Example

n TENA specifies a peer-to-peer architecture for logical rangesn Applications can be both clients and servers simultaneouslyn In their role as servers, applications serve TENA objects called “servants”n In their role as clients, applications obtain “proxies,” representing other applications’

servants. Only servers can write to their servant objects’ publication state

n The IKE 2 Middleware, the TENA objects, and the user’s applicationcode are compiled and linked together

SummarySummary

n Foundation Initiative 2010 serves to acquire the necessary productsfor interoperability and reusability among ranges, facilities, andsimulations

n Provides:n A common architecture called TENA (including data standards and middleware)n A common process for executing a mission that uses TENA-compliant resourcesn A common definition for supporting tools

n TENA is slated to support major modernization efforts, including VPG,JDEP, JSB, CEE, and the MDA Data Fusion effort

n TENA is supporting numerous weapon system programs and Jointexperiments, including JSF, Patriot, Comanche, and the rangeintegration effort of MC-02

n MC02 Range Integration is an initial effort in support of JFCOMn Requires Ranges show “value added” in MC02n Likely use again supporting:

n J7 in Roving Sands 03n J7 Role in emerging JNTC (Joint National Training Capability)

n TENA Prototype is being tested at over 10 ranges and facilities
