In 2011, Japan experienced a huge earthquake, which was followed by a massive tsunami. They destroyed many towns and killed about 16,000 people. It was a terrible time, but not unique. The Japanese are used to extreme natural disasters, and very well prepared. If the people hadn’t known what to do in an emergency, even more of them would have died.Schools in Japan have regular ‘earthquake drills’. The children are taught to go under their desks, or, if they are outside, to move into the centre of the playground, away from the building. They know where all the fire exits are, and they are taught how to use fire extinguishers. Schools, offices and private houses have emergency kits, which contain items such as food, water, medicine and torches. Although it is in an earthquake zone, Tokyo is famous for its skyscrapers. The highest one is 256 metres high. They are all designed to be earthquake-proof. When an earthquake happens (and they happen frequently), the buildings rock from side to side. For the people at the top, it feels like a bumpy aeroplane flight. It might be scary, but it’s quite safe.
