Experience

SIMS Student August 2012

Based on my credentials and a personal essay, I was one of 28 students handpicked by the staff at

UCSB for the Summer Institute in Mathematics and Science. I took study-intensive classes six days a week, along with helping a professor with his nanotechnology research in a laboratory environment. At

the end of the two week program, our team presented, with visuals, the results of our research. The audience consisted of peers, family members, and UCSB faculty.

FIRST Robotics Team Member 2009 - 2012

I was directly involved in the technical design, as well as the manufacturing of our final competition

robot. This process involved critical thinking, creativity, and diligence. I also learned how to work and communicate effectively in a team environment.

Math and Physics Tutor August 2011 – June 2012

I mentored and assisted fellow classmates in understanding and passing their math and physics classes. The level of my tutoring ranged from Geometry to Calculus AB. In physics, I aided in the understanding of basic physics principles including kinematics, thermodynamics, electricity, and magnetism.

Thanks to my dad, I’ve always had an inkling that I might enjoy engineering. He originally worked at an aerospace company, but soon found that his mechanical

engineering skills could be utilized to create fun, cool toys and sporting goods. When I asked him what an engineer does, he told me, “I solve problems.” I liked that idea. With my school’s robotics team, FIRST Team 2085, I learned to collaborate, negotiate,

and innovate. I have gone back during this year’s build season to help, now as a mentor. This past summer, I participated in UCSB’s SIMS program. We worked in teams to solve problems related to nanotechnology, attended intense seminars in math, science,

and engineering, and ended with a professional presentation of findings to our peers, UCSB staff, and our families. It was an honor to be selected; I grew as a researcher, team player, and speaker.

I have recently interviewed with Sonos, a sound tech company in Santa Barbara, about a paid engineering internship for this summer. I am optimistic, knowing this will give me some hands-on experience and help pay my college expenses.

Four years ago, my dad had several strokes. He is unable to work because his motivation and logic centers were damaged. Finances are a challenge for my mom, a junior high music teacher. This scholarship will go a long way to ease her financial concerns.

I am driven to be successful and impactful. Mechanical engineering encompasses the entire creative process, from the original idea to the materials and steps required for manufacturing, to its packaging and the most efficient size for shipping.

UCSB has a program for finishing a Master’s Degree in five years, which I want to pursue. I will be honored if you select me for this scholarship. Thank you for your consideration.

Recommendation for Geoffrey Sanchez

I first met Geoffrey through Vacaville High School's FIRST Robotics Club where he was a member for four

years. He was also one of my son’s closer friends in high school. I was a mentor for the club for during his

participation and numerous opportunities to watch him interact in multiple social settings. He continually strove

to make sure that all club members, advisors and volunteers felt valued and part of the team. On numerous

occasions I had the opportunity to observe his overall leadership and integrity as it related to making good

choices in a social setting. The robotics team traveled quite a bit and had lots of opportunities to be the face of

their school at competition. Geoffrey was instrumental in reaching out and helping the younger students feel

valued. His positive attitude is contagious and helps to keep everyone moving forward. I cannot say enough

about Geoffrey’s achievements and work ethic.

Geoffrey has a very unique and valued combination of academic strength, leadership skills, and community

involvement. He strives for excellence in his studies both in high school and college. I have recommended him

for an internship at the company I currently work for as I know that his work ethic is a good fit for our company.

Over the recent holiday’s I was impressed that he took time to return to his high school robotics team and help

the students start building this year’s competition robot. I know that he not only will succeed at whatever he

attempts but will also contribute greatly to any field or institution of which he is a member. He display’s a good

blend of academic excellence and personal accountability. For these reasons, I feel strongly that supporting

Geoffrey through scholarship and grants not only helps him but also is a sound investment that will continue to

Letter Of Recommendation

The first day I met Geoffery was not the day he arrived at the Summer Institute of Math and Science, but the day I read his application for the program. The Summer Institute in Mathematics and Science (SIMS) is a highly competitive program that provides an introduction to university academics and scientific research. I have been a Resident Assistant for this program for three years, and I was Program Coordinator this last year. I have read hundreds of SIMS applications and they can get repetitive to say the least - it takes something special to stand out. Geoffrey’s application caught my eye not simply because of his high academic achievements such as scoring a five on both his Calculus AB and Physics AP tests (many students have done the same), but because his passion for science and engineering stood out clearly in his writing. Grades are an easy standard to gauge how a student will perform in college, but I have found a better metric of how a student will perform is their passion for their field of choice. Geoffrey showed drive in his essay and continued to display this throughout the program. The SIMS program is fast paced and significantly more difficult than what students are used to, even coming from a challenging high school setting. The three classes cover a month’s worth of material in the two weeks. This is all while the students are working on a research project, a research presentation, and other program activities. It is not uncommon for students to be up until two or three in the morning working on homework, only to be in class again by 9. If Geoffrey finished his homework before his classmates , instead of getting some extra sleep he would stay up with them to help them finish their work. Many students get overwhelmed because it is the first time they have been truly challenged, and a few do not even complete the program. Geoffrey excelled at every opportunity, and always had a great attitude. Geoffrey also displays an important quality for mechanical engineers, he works very well in groups. Some of his group members were difficult to deal with, especially in the high stress environment of the SIMS program, but he was always able to keep the dynamic light-hearted and productive. His optimism was contagious. Not only is Geoffrey one of the best students I have had in the SIMS program (out of 112 over four years), he is also just a genuine, kind, and hard working person. I would like to extend my highest recommendation to Geoffrey.
