The meeting was held on Satur- day, May 13, 2006, at Canoga Park Bowl with 110 people in attendance. Presided over by Transition Committee Chairman Mario Rodriguez, the first item on the agenda was the vote to merge, which passed unani- mously. Next was discussion of the sanction fees. The proposal set the local portion of the fees at $8.00. For the members of the LABA, this was no change, but for both WBAs, this was a big jump. After much discussion, the local portion of dues increase was approved by the required two-thirds vote. The local por- tion of the adult dues will be $8.00. The By-Laws were then approved. Mario thanked the Transition Committee for their hard work and USBC Field Rep, Gloria Loftis commended those in the room for the tremendous steps they have taken in approv- ing the merger. Roaring 90’s Bowling League by Phyl Knoll, Secretary TORRANCE — It was al- most 10:00 A.M. Thursday, Feb- ruary 16th at Bowl-O-Drome and Bill Bonn focused his eyes on the front door waiting for his teammate, Lamart Jenkins to show up. But, that was the situation almost every week because Lamart works nights and barely has time to change clothes be- fore our league starting time. As soon as we spotted him, we flagged him down to lane 7-8. He staggered into his bowling shoes just in time to throw one practice ball...a strike! The first frame...a strike! The second frame...a strike! But that was not uncommon for Lamart. It was at this point, I returned to give at- tention to my own game. The next time I happened to look over, I had to look twice. Lamart had just completed his ninth frame...nine strikes! Well, he did it! He killed the pocket for three more strikes for a beautiful “300” game. And...was he thrilled. He hadn’t seen one of those since 1977 when he bowled his first “300” game at Fort Carson Lanes in Fort Carson, Colorado. Lamart began his bowling career in 1962 joining leagues at Manchester Bowling Academy, Manchester-Western Bowl, and Southwest Bowl. He currently bowls three leagues a week and maintains a league average be- tween 192 and 225. On April 27th league president Gregory Jacobs pre- sented Lamart with his USBC “300” Ring, 100-Pins Over Av- erage Watch, 75 Pins Over Aver- age Chevron and from So. L.A. County B.A. a 9-row Chevron. With that and deservingly, Lamart received a standing ova- tion from fellow teammates. Bill Bonn Don Pulls Out A Win! His opponent was another of the NABI San Diego “seasoned citi- zens”, Jay Shackelford, who had qualified #4. Summer Singles Classic At

Forest Lanesby Dennis Stephenson

LAKE FOREST — Sign-upscontinue for the Summer SinglesClassic at Forest Lanes. Theleague is a handicap singles eventthat starts June 5th Monday at7:00 P.M. and runs 11 weeksplus sweeps.

The league concept is to al-low bowlers from 180 to 225average to compete on a levelplaying field for some seriousmoney. First place has a mini-mum payout of $3,000 and amaximum payout of $7,500 withbonus monies. The league ishandicapped at the rate of 75%of 225 with a maximum of33pins. Lane conditions will bethe house shot.

This will be a fair league forthe above average bowler tocompete on a level playing field. The target bowler for this leagueis someone who loves to com-pete and comes to bowl their besteach week.

So here are some new incen-tives designed to prevent prob-lems experienced in otherleagues.

First, two additional pointsare now awarded to the indi-vidual with the most total pinseach night on each lane. A totalof five points can be won eachnight, which pays $5 per point.

Second, the top eight bowlersin the final 16 will receive roundbyes in the rolloffs creating a bigincentive to get into the topeight and stay there!

Third, a minimum score of160 per game and 510 per serieshas been put in place to discour-age individuals from extremesandbagging. Any bowler aver-aging more than about 20 pinsunder his/her highest book overthe past four years or individu-als without books considereedbagging will be first warned andany further bagging they will beremoved from the league.

I am the league coordinator(not bowling or sponsoring any-one) and personally guarantee-ing the prize fund!!! I’m tryingto help make this game morecompetitive and fun for every-one. Should you have any ques-tions, suggestions or would liketo sign up, please call ForestLanes at 949-770-0055 or Den-nis Stephenson at Five Star Ap-praisal 949-863-1041. Let’s havefun this summer!!!

WOODLAND HILLS, CA—Pacific Coast Deaf Bowling Asso-ciation is holding its 65th annual tournament with the Golden StateDeaf Bowlers as the host in the western part of San FernandoValley in Los Angeles this Memorial Day week-end. Warner CenterMarriott Hotel is the headquarters from Thursday May 25 to Mon-day May 29 .

This marks as the first time the event is being held in thewesternmost part of Los Angeles because that is where the host,Golden State Deaf Bowlers have their league.

Previously during the years of 1961, 1970 and 1985 the otherhosts had theirs at Glendale in the eastern part of San FernandoValley.

Not counting last year’s Pacific Coast Deaf tournament whichwas held for the first time in Hawaii because many of the deafbowlers could not afford to go there, this year’s event drew an alltime low since 1963, 22 men’s teams. The Pacific Coast DeafWomen’s Bowling Association which accompanied the men’s forthe past 58 years, drew 14 teams, its lowest since 16 teams in 2002at Concord.

Despite the low numbers, the schedule begins with the host’sown No-Tap Mixed Doubles tournament at Canoga Park Bowl onThursday afternoon and continues till 10 PM. Canoga Park Bowl isin Winnetka just a couple miles from the hotel and this may give themen a chance to practice and get familiar with the surroundings.

The actual tournament starts on Friday May 26 with the menbowling Doubles and Singles events all day at Canoga Park Bowland the women doing the same events at AMF Rocket Bowl innearby Chatsworth. In the evening there will be separate men andwomen general meetings at the headquarter hotel.

On Saturday morning there are men’s and women’s team eventsat respective centers and each follows in the afternoon with men’sMasters qualifying round and women’s Queen’s and Senior Queensqualifying rounds. In the evening there will be Banquet Dinner at7:30 at the hotel and a deaf female comedian show at 9 PM.

On Sunday morning and all day both men’s and women’s Mas-ters and Queens and each Senior Masters and Senior Queens matchplays and finals at respective centers.

At 7 PM in the evening at the hotel ballroom there are prizedrawings, awards and at 8:30 PM the Master of Ceremonies JohnMaucere presents his new show.

DOWNEY—Steve “Great White” Gurrieri continued hishot bowling on Monday blasting his way to 268/743. Thisgives Steve a 250 average over the past two weeks so itsaddens yours truly that he will be unavailable to bowlagainst us next week. Steve didn’t do it alone for BowlersDepot – West Covina as he had help from the Ruiz Brothers,Daniel and Leonard Jr. who bowled 734 and 667 respec-tively. It should be noted that Daniel qualifies for a SeriesAward by being an amazing 203 pins over average! RogerWrase paced the over-matched Western Pacific crew with641. Overboost.com remained on top of the Wild Card stand-ings by defeating Family Amusement 4 to1. Overboost gota solid team effort from ¾ of their team as Chris “Venus”Williams topped the pair with 697, followed closely by Scott“Surfer Boy” Norton 677, and Lauren “Lava Girl” Brifmanwith 672. Jason Hoppe “Go Lucky” topped the Family with665.

Greg “GQ” Jackson rolled 674 to lead Pro Approach –Lakewood to a sweep over G.H.C. Mr. Invincible VinceWood overcame a tough Game 1 to post 652 to lead G.H.C.Ramon “The Terror” Torres lived up to his name and toreup the pins to the tune of 277/720 to lead Reback’s Plumb-ing to a sweep over Boulevard Brakes. Greg Neuer “andImproved” was the gas for the Brakes with 279/680, whileJohn Mongillo helped Ramon with 669 for Reback’s.Moneynet Residential Loans’ Vernon Adams nearly single-handily sawed through Forest Lanes by cutting throughthe pins for 278/279 before cooling off and ending with 737to lead his team to another sweep. The rest of the Wild Cardside saw another sweep as J.C. Spas took down a confusedRoto Grip team as Norm Smith led the way with 711. Chris“Smoka” Rocha rolled a BIG ONE on his way to 702 and ledPro Approach – Downey to a four-point win over Al’s BarSupply. Memo Rosales supplied the power for Al’s with 667.Clyde’s Video Games used a consistent team effort to over-come the 277/711 of Jim “How Hot Is Brooke” Burke andwent onto sweep Team Storm. In the final match of the WildCard, Vayle Floria rolled 689 to lead Erickson’s Food to itslone win.

On the Round Winners side, Linder Insurance stretchedout their overall lead by taking 4 of 5 from Ebonite. Frank“The Tank” Barefoot Jr. 697 and Nick Smith “& Wesson”were finally able to gun down the Dynamic Duo this week, although Billy “Batman” Myers Jr. and Paul “Robin” Smithwere again a force by rolling 711 and 671 respectively. Art“I’m not Iranian” Ouzenian 709 and Anthony Carlton Jr. 654led Threadworks to a 4-1 win over Tangeo.com who werepaced by Arnold Cheesman with 674. Bong Hwang was theBOMB for Freek Racing with 710, as he and Armando Zavalawith 667 took down Tri Star Vending 5 and zilch. Freek Rac-ing was without CLIPPER fans Charlie and Chris who were inPhoenix faithfully cheering on their team. Well, at least theirbowling team won… And in the final match up of the night, itwas Columbia 300 taking down Prudential Real Estate 4points to 1 in a low scoring match as Danny Ontiveros led thepair with 642.

The side pots had a lot of similar names to last week asmany of the same bowlers are heating up with the weather.Vernon Adams was nearly perfect in Game 1 as he came outwith 278 to take top honors with Frank Barefoot Jr. just be-hind with 268. Game 2 went again to Vernon (ho-hum) Adamsas he topped Game 1 by a pin to finish with 279 and a tie withGreg Neuer. Game 3 came down to the 10th and it was Mr.Invincible living up to his name, as Vince Wood fired 259 tosnap off John VanDerham who rolled 257 for 2nd. Vince col-lected the 3rd game and Super Pots, while Steve Gurrieri camefrom way back to take Series from Vernon with 743. Congratu-lations to all the Side Pot winners!

We have 3 weeks left before sweeps and the roll-offs andanything can still happen. One more week of the “house”shot, so look for tons of big scores again next week. TheClippers are done, but the DUCKS are still alive along withthe Dodgers and I think the ANGELS still have a chance tomake the playoffs. All these games can be seen on the HUGEscreen in the lounge, and then you can come watch somehonor scores be posted by some of the top bowlers in SOCAL. Come down to DEL RIO in Downey to check it all out. Thanks again for checking in!

JAT FarmClub

by David GordonWEST COVINA—Welcome

to the new 2006-07 season of theJAT Farm Club, as we kicked thingsoff with a bang at Brunswick WestCovina Lanes this past Sunday.

A very small turnout and afteradvancing 8 bowlers to the Opendivision, we were left with only12 bowlers. However, those 12made it a very exceptional andhigh scoring day. Also, some rook-ies from last season establishedthemselves as the seasoned veter-ans to look out for this year.

Now after reading this article,I think a lot of bowlers who didnot make it to this tournamentwill wish they had. With the smallturnout, the format was changedto be 12 games of match play andthen the top 5 finals. A reminderto those new to the JAT Farm Clubarticles, reportable scores are 220games or higher. So let’s get to thescoring.

In the first 6 games of matchplay, we found Natalie Jimenezleading the way behind high gamesof 258-238-279. Following wehave Felicia Mara 225-265-224,Amanda Manoly 258-227-222-236 (great set), Max Slevcove231-237-246-222, DarrenPascual 244-223-225, Shane Peck225-222-236, Charlie Hair 223-235, and Mark Curtis 234-228-225. Big difference a couple ofmonths off can make. Jimenez ledthe way after 6 games at plus 304and we went down to 9th place, allat plus.

In the next grouping of 6games we had A.J. Garcia give usthe tournament high game with a284. Way to go. More high scorescame in from Peck 254-232-235-247, Pascual248-226, Justin Fos-ter (wanting to join the fun) 245-222-242, Jimenez 234, Manoly224, and Mara 221. Big jumps weremade by Foster of four positionsand Peck with a five position jumpto put him into the finals.

The finals started off with 3of the 5 making their finals debut.Fifth seed Slevcove (+338) had hisfirst final match against veteranand 4th seed Mara (+343). Maracaptured this match 225-167 andmoved on to meet the 3rd seedbowler Pascual (+344) also a firsttime in the finals. However, Maratook no pity and sent her manpacking with a 212-195 win. Nowagainst 2nd seed Peck (+412),Mara cracked it up a notch to dis-pose of this finals rookie 246-226.

So then it came down to thelast match, which also has a newformat change. The finalmatch(es) is the best 2 out of 3games. So with veteran against topseed veteran Jimenez (+440) andfemale against female, the actionbegan. The first game was won byMara 213-191. And in the secondgame, a little closer 189-169 alsowent to Mara, claiming her firstFarm Club title. CongratulationsFelicia. I except a lot from bothgirls this year.

So that concludes our first tour-nament of the new season. Beforewe leave, I want to congratulatetwo members of the Open divi-sion on their perfect games. KevinValmonte and Ryan Aguilar. In factwith Ryan’s accomplishment, thiswas a repeat of last year, wherehe had a great outing in the WestCoast Jr. Elims at Keystone Laneson Saturday (see article) and thenturned around the next day andposted a perfect game in JAT.Twilight Zone!!!

Our next tournament will beon June 11th with a check-in timeof 8:15am, bowl at 9:00am. Weare waiting for confirmation ofthe site and will have that in thepaper next week.

Also remember bowlers, thatthis is a new season which meansnew membership is required at$10.00. Get there early to com-plete the paperwork that you alllove so much. Please bring yoursanction card and proof of aver-age if you are new to the club. Also take a look at the new website for the JAT (Open & FarmClub) at WWW.BOWLJAT .ORG.Until then, take care.

NORWALK—The Junior ScratchTour’s bowlers took to the lanes on May14th at Keystone Lanes in Norwalk, forthe final regular season tournament of theseason. The tournament was the final tour-nament worth points, and also the finalchances for many bowlers to make theirmoves into the first of the JST’s two ma-jor tournaments, the Tournament of Cham-pions and High Points. With the TCHPbeing a prestigious, qualify-only tour-nament, and this final competition offer-ing double points, it was a day sure to beready for some clutch performances andexciting bowling.

The Novice HDCP. Div would rollfour games, with total pins to determinethe champion. Caymann Huntley wouldshoot a respectable 516 set to settle for2nd, but Wesley Low would close off anychance of any other member to jump intothe division’s point lead, as he wouldwin the tournament, shooting the highgame of 179, and ending the set with a621 series. Congrats to Wesley on hissecond title of the season, the $50 first-place scholarship prize, and for claiminghis first JST Points title.

The Intermediate Div. definitely madethe day exciting, as as many bowlers offive; all had huge chances to end the sea-son as the top point earner. StevenSensabaugh would help his effort, roll-ing the high game of qualifying with anice 229 game. One man was on a missionfor the day though, as Ryan Brown tookthe early lead in qualifying, bowling anice 797 set. The drama was still as thickas could be through match play, and inthe end, the roll off would see ChristinaFraijo in third, with Brown down to 2nd,and Eric Gross moving into first. Brownwould do exactly what he needed to do,as he would clutch up to not only winhis first JST title of the season, but alsohis first JST Points title, as he woulddefeat Fraijo in the opening match, 177-168, and then Gross in the title match185-159. Congrats to Ryan on the winfor the $125 scholarship, and the Inter-mediate Points title. Great bowling.

The Advance Div. had some bowlerswho would need a huge day to jump intothe TCHP spotlight, and also some whocould jump into the points lead. JustenDanforth made a return, shooting the highgame of qualifying, with a real nice 267game to help propel himself first afterqualifying, with a great 868 set. BrittanyPage qualified herself into match play, and that would be enough to clinch herfirst ever JST points title. Congratulationsto her. Match play had a lot of movement, and Danforth would remain in first for theroll off. Charlie Hair would make his fifthroll off appearance as he took second, withJoey Marino in third, and John Lawsonin fourth. The opening match was one-sided, as Lawson would defeat Marinowith a solid 215 game. Lawson lost someof his steam in the next match, falling toHair, 169-211. The title match was thenset, and it would be an important one forDanforth, as he could make himself eli-gible for the TCHP with a win, but somekey openings would bring his doom, asHair would roll a real nice 233 game todefeat Danforth’s 211. Congratulationsto Charlie on finally winning his first titleof the season, after so many other closecalls. He won a $150 scholarship and aJST Champions shirt, great job.

The Open Div. had some near perfec-tion, as Nathan Urrutia would shoot agreat 289 game, and finish the set out with951 to take first place into match play.Like the Advance Div., Devin Bidwellmade match play to insure his first JSTOpen Div. Points title for the year. Con-gratulations to him. Match play wouldsee Urrutia drop to second, as JeffSpiesman caught on fire to jump into first, with Sam Hitchcock in third, and MattJones in fourth. The opening match was ahigh-scoring affair, as Hitchcock woulddefeat Jones, 262-243. Urrutia came outof the gate strong in the next match, roll-ing a 254 game to easily defeatHitchcock’s 196. Urrutia was then look-ing for his second title of the season, buthe would be denied, as Spiesman wouldclutch up and win his first JST title of theseason, and qualifying himself for theTCHP, defeating Urrutia, 226-180. Con-gratulations to Jeff on his first ever JSTtitle, which was good for the $150 schol-arship and JST Champions shirt.

Great bowling to everyone and con-gratulations to all of our scholarshipwinners. We were able to award out al-most $1000 in this tournament alone, andthat is to the thanks of our awesomesponsor of B&W Bowling Equipment. As always, a major thank you to them. Weare now relatively in the “post season”of the JST, and the next tournament is theTournament of Champions and HighPoints. It is slated for this Sunday, May28th at Action Lanes in El Monte. As pre-viously noted, this is a qualify-only fortournament, and those bowlers who areeligible, should have been notified al-ready. Come on out and see the bestbowlers bowl the unique bracket elimi-nation format this Sunday. It is for suregoing to be some great action. See youthere, have a great week, and keep up thepractice.
