Dedicated to Yoga

The Institute was founded in 1984 to provide a dedicated teaching centre for Iyengar students in London. It was

financed with contributions and fund-raising activities by its early members and also from B.K.S. Iyengar himself,

who taught here and gave public demonstrations.

Today, we remain dedicated to yoga, offering more than fifty classes per week from early morning to late evening every day. As a charity, we’re run on a not-for-profit basis with a commitment to offer affordable yoga to students

of all ages and abilities.

Our bright, spacious award-winning studios are used only for yoga. Located a short walk from Maida Vale tube

station and with parking close by, the Institute is easily accessible from Central London

and beyond.

Why Iyengar Yoga?

Yoga became popular in the West mainly through the teaching of B.K.S. Iyengar whose method is now the

most widely practised in the world. Accessible to anyone, it has been described as meditation in action. Practising the postures with awareness has an integrating effect and

works to harmonise mind and body.

Postures are held for longer than in some other styles, allowing tight muscles to lengthen and relax, and helping to focus awareness. The practice is progressive, building a stable foundation before attempting more demanding work, and classes at all levels devote time to relaxation.

What can you expect from classes?• A safe, methodical progression of postures

•Technique – precision, alignment and awareness in performing the postures

• Sequencing to develop strength, flexibility, stamina, concentration and relaxation

• Clear demonstration and explanation bywell-qualified teachers

• Individual correction and adjustment by the teacher when necessary

Teachers

The Iyengar Yoga Institute Maida Vale has the most experienced teachers in the country, all of whom undergo a rigorous programme of training, lasting years. Many at

the Institute have decades of experience, regularly travelling to India for instruction and experience. With over twenty

teachers, the Institute boasts a wealth of choice for students.

Only certified teachers teach genuine Iyengar yoga. All of ours at the Institute hold the Iyengar Yoga Teachers Certification Mark, a sign of excellence, clarity and depth

of understanding. To use this logo, they have to be properly trained and maintain their development.

B.K.S. Iyengar

B.K.S. Iyengar is a living yoga master who has been

teaching for almost 80 years, having initially used yoga

as a means to improve his health after an upbringing

of poverty. Now in his nineties, he is still practising daily.

Through dedicated practice he developed his own method,

which has been adopted worldwide and has spread yoga

far beyond his homeland of India.

His style of yoga has changed the lives of many, as its

systematic use of supports and props has enabled even

those with serious ailments to practise.

WE SUPPORT

PUTTING FEET FIRSTWhat Diabetes UK are asking for:What are we asking for?

REFERENCES

3

People with diabetes should be involved more in their own care – they should know how to look after their feet, what risk they have of developing a complication, and what care they should get from the health service. A ‘touch the toes test’ guide has been developed so people can get a friend to check their feet.

Commissioners of health services need to deliver the integrated footcare pathway – that means providing the right treatment at the right time and in the right place for all people with diabetes:

• Set up referral within 24 hours for those with ulcers to a multidisciplinary specialist footcare team

• Ensure appropriate referral to a foot protection team which has specialist expertise in assessment and management of disease of the foot

• Create local diabetes networks to join up and improve foot care for people with diabetes

Healthcare professionals should understand the risk of diabetic foot disease, talk about this with people with diabetes, provide annual foot checks (in primary care and secondary care), and refer quickly to specialists when necessary.

There should be a national diabetes implementation plan. And all of diabetes care should be monitored as part of a national framework – foot care as well as general care. In England, the National Commissioning Board and commissioning groups should do this. As well as this, the indicators in QOF (Quality Outcomes Framework) should require that GPs tell people about their foot risk level and refer to specialist care when appropriate.

At Diabetes UK we’re going to raise awareness about the seriousness of the condition and the impact of diabetes on feet amongst people with diabetes, healthcare professionals and the public. We are campaigning for change. We need your help to do this.

There are many areas of diabetes that need to change for the better – both in terms of awareness and quality of care, and this is one area where there are clearly identified solutions to a problem that we should all be ashamed of. We can dramatically reduce the number of amputations suffered by people with diabetes. Join us in making this happen.
