May/June 2016
We also say farewell to Ms.
Kwan who has secured a
position as an Early Years
Literacy Coach and Ms. Tran
who will be on maternity
leave next year. We wish all
these teachers the very best
and look forward to Ms.
Tran’s return in the 2017-
2018 school year. We
appreciate the fantastic job
they have all done. We are
however pleased to welcome
back Mrs. Killam and Mrs.
Nikolarakos who are returning
from maternity leave. We are
also very excited to have Ms.
Tai join us as a Full Day
Kindergarten teacher at Terry
Fox!
On behalf of the Terry Fox
staff I would like to wish
everyone a very safe and
happy summer!
On the first day of school
class lists will be posted on
the walls. All our staff will
meet the children on the
playground (paved area)
with their class lists to
welcome them back.

Where did this school year go?
What an amazing school year we have had here at Terry Fox
P.S. The entire year has passed so smoothly and quickly and that is
a very good indication of how busy and productive we have been.
We are very proud of the many different ways in which our students
have achieved their various goals and reached success.
We are quite fortunate to have a devoted and caring staff.
Throughout the year our staff has provided a wide variety of
learning opportunities for students that have included academic
support, clubs and teams. We thank them very much for their
commitment!
With every new school year comes change…and 2016-2017
will be no exception. We will unfortunately be saying goodbye to
some of our staff. We are saying goodbye to Mr. Liang, Ms. Ziogou
and Ms. Uy who have all finished their Long-Term Occasional
assignments.
After many months of hard work put in by our Student Leader
Committee, it pleases us to say that we have had a very successful
school year. For starters, the fundraising committee successfully
reached their goal of $1300 when the final fundraising event came
around. Freezie sales were remarkable so we assumed it was because
of the humidity! The expectations we set were well exceeded so the
Grade 8’s End of The Year Dance happened with the enthusiastic DJs
being compensated as well as a higher discount for all the intermediate
yearbooks. The social committee held the school’s last spirit day which
was twin day. This was one of the most celebrated spirit days of this
year which wouldn’t have happened without the assistance of them.
From posters to announcements, it was a spectacular group effort.
We can both say as the SAC’s that we had an awesome year here at
Fox. With that being said, we wish everyone an amazing summer.

TIPS FOR THE SUMMER
Bicycle Safety
Now that the warmer weather has approached us children will be participating in many outdoor activities
like bike riding. The Toronto District School Board and Toronto Public Health want kids to be safe while
playing outdoors this summer. Parents and caregivers can "stay a step ahead" by protecting children when
they ride.
Here's how:
1.An adult should always supervise children 10 years of age or younger when they are using a bicycle or
other wheeled sports equipment. Even older children may need on-going supervision when riding near the
road.
2.Make sure children wear the correct helmet properly when they ride. Ontario's bike helmet law requires
all children and youth under age 18 to wear an approved bike helmet when riding a bicycle.
3. Keep children away from traffic when they use wheeled sports equipment. Make sure they ride in a safe
place.
4. Teach children how to:
a. steer, brake and ride in a straight line
b. wear the right safety gear, and
c. do a safety check every time they ride a bicycle, scooter, skateboard, use in-line skates or wear shoes
with wheels.
5. Be within arm's reach when your children are learning to ride any wheeled equipment.
6. Always walk a bicycle, scooter or skateboard across a street intersection, instead of riding across.
7. Tell children that you are happy when you see them riding safely.
8. Remind children of the safety rules when they forget.
9. Be a good role model - wear a helmet and safety gear yourself. Children copy what adults do.
Sun Safe Behaviour
Getting students outside and active is good for their health but too much sun can have serious side-effects,
including burns, eye damage, premature aging of the skin and skin cancer. We encourage all students to
practice “sun safety.”
What exactly does sun safe behaviour look like?
• Cover up: Even on days with a moderate UV index students should wear a hat and sunglasses, especially
if they'll be outside for over 30 minutes.
• Stay cool: Students should stay in shady areas, particularly at midday when the sun is strongest.
• Use sunscreen: Choose sunscreens with SPF 15 or higher that include protection from both UVA and
UVB rays.
quoi pour soigner les blessés. Il a proposé une solution au gouvernement du Canada;
Hair Donation Trip!
TERRY FOX HAIR DONATION: May 18th, 2016
By: Ivy and Brandi
The companies we gave our hair to are: Pantene Beautiful Lengths and Wigs for Kids. These
companies help kids and adults who have cancer, and can’t grow out their own hair. Usually, real
wigs cost from $1200 to $3000, which some people/families can’t afford.
17 students and 2 teachers donated, 6 or more inches of hair each. The students and
teachers who donated their hair this year are: Fiona Liu (Gr. 2), Alice Wang (Gr. 3), Ivy Zhao (Gr. 6),
Anly Lin Yu (Gr.6), Brandi Chen (Gr. 6), Tina Wang (Gr. 6), Leah Young (Gr. 7), Angela Chen (Gr. 7),
Sonia Chandra (Gr. 7), Angel Gao (Gr. 8), Vivica Lin (Gr. 8), Grace Liang (Gr. 8), Jennifer Lam (Gr.
8), Belle Ouyang (Gr. 8), Rayyan Rahman (Gr. 8), Vagdevi Marella (Gr. 8), Param Shah (Gr. 8 -
former Terry Fox student), Ms. Chu and Ms. Uy.
When we arrived at Salon Passion we took a look around the place. Then, we took turns
getting our new hairstyles, while everybody else waited for their turn. We had a scheduled plan for 2
people cutting their hair at a time. After we went to Asian Legend for lunch...so good. After, we
returned back to the salon to get a group photo with the hairdressers. Then, we returned back to
school and took our individual photos. During the time we returned back to class everyone's reaction
was shocked and surprised.
Our experience to the hair salon, was really fun and exciting. In my opinion, it was fun
watching everyone get a new hairstyle. I think, that your hair shows a little about your personality.
For example, pixie cut or short hair means you like to take risks. Long hair could show how much you
care for your own hair. The thought of some people not being able to grow out their own hair, makes
me appreciate that I'm not diagnosed with cancer. Not only that, but people have to deal with what's
happening in their body. When it was my turn to get my hair cut off, I was wondering over and over
again if I was making the right decision or if I shouldn't do it. Once I felt a whole chunk of my hair fall
off, I knew I couldn't go back now… But in the end I was glad I chose to donate it to someone who
needs it. Afterwards everyone got food from Asian Legend which was really yummy.
Next year, maybe you can donate your hair!
ESL SELF-CONTAINED CLASS
This month, the English Language Learners in Ms. Louie's ESL class read
a story called : "Ryan and Jimmy And the Well in Africa That Brought
Them Together". We learned how important water is and decided to come
up with ways in which we could save water. Check out our art work and
see how many different ways you can help save water.

Another track & field season has gone by with lots of stories to tell. The Area meet on May 17 was
chaotic but exciting. Daniel Niu was lightening quick and didn't seem to get tired from his three
races. He took first place in the grade 7 400m race and the 4 x 100m relay, and also came in second
place in the 200m race. Mr. Chan's javelin competitors also saw lots of success. Godfrey Kwan, Belle
Ouyang, and Aaron Tan won their javelin events. While Claire Zhang and Nancy Feng took second
place, and Kenneth Huang finished in fourth.
Thirty four competitors moved on to the June 7 North Conference finals at York University. That was
a much more relaxed meet. The highlight was Godfrey winning the grade 7 boys javelin event again,
and Jimmy Su taking second place in the grade 4 shot put event. Seven competitors finished in the
top four to qualify for the City Championships on June 14 at Birchmount Stadium.
The competition is always tough at the City's. We congratulate the following athletes for competing
hard and representing Terry Fox against the best of the best: Jimmy Su, Vivian Ma, Godfrey Kwan,
Daniel Niu, Steven Xie, Andy Jiang, and Belle Ouyang.
Terry Fox Track & Field Coaches
In the month of March/April, The Terry Fox Badminton Team was constructed and spirits were
high. This year, the team was motivated to do better than they had done last year. They
practiced on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the coaches enhanced skills and taught strategy.
When the first round of matches arrived, Terry Fox P.S started off great with wins over David
Lewis and Silver Springs. However, when the second round of matches rolled around the
corner, events had taken a turn for the worse as the team lost a close match to Milne Valley and
just barely managed to make a spot in the conferences. However, losing that game had placed
us in a challenging starting position for the tournament. On the day of the conference, we
pushed our way past Lawrence Heights putting us into the semi-finals against dreaded Bedford
Public School. We went into the games wholeheartedly but couldn’t push for a crucial win in
order to move onto the finals. Although we didn’t win any banners and ended up in the same
place as the previous year, we felt that we learned how to deal with tough situations and tough
schools like Bedford P.S and Milne Valley. The Terry Fox Badminton Team consisted of the
coaches: Ms. Woo, Ms. Chu, Mr. Au, and Mr. Liang. The players were: Boys Singles: Nicholas
Lee, Girls Singles: Angel Gao, Boys Doubles: Larry Fang & William Shi, Girls Doubles: Grace
Liang & Sophia Ma, Mixed Doubles: Jacky Lee & Belle Ouyang, and the subs were: Ricky Wu,
Vivida Lin, Shirley Su, and David Mo.
