I know that this was Life,—the track
Whereon with equal feet we fared;

I loved the weight I had to bear,

TiMe wARPEach month, Margaret Aurisch pulls out the old results journal out of the Trotter’s vault, blows the dust off, and shares with us the achievements of the more chronologically challenged among us.This month, we profile leon harradine.
Leon joined Terrigal Trotters in 1983 and his first run was Kincumba Mountain which he says gave him second thoughts about the group. Leon didn’t keep those thoughts for long and 27 years later he is still a regular on Saturday mornings.Leon has competed in numerous marathons, half marathons, fun runs and has completed 10 six foot track marathons.Leon has been Trotter of the Year on 2 occasions and is a Life Member of Terrigal Trotters Inc.Some of Leons achievements are:Best 6@6 21.28 February 19883000 metres at Gosford Athletic Club June 1987 12.14800 metres Gosford Athletic Club July 1987 2.53Best marathon - Anzac Day marathon 1988 3.05.461988 won the 60+age group in the Lake Maquarie Aust Half Marathon championshipIn 1987 & 1990 was NSW Veterans Marathon championBest Six Foot Track 1993 4.47.581994 New York Marathon 3.39.521996 Kempsey Marathon 3.28.13 1st male over 601997 Mt Wilson to Bilpin 3.09.161997 Gold Coast Marathon 3.34.37 (guided the blind Japanese paralympics marathon champion)2000 Sydney host city marathon olympic course 3.38.09 silver medal 65years +2001 Palm Beach to Manly 30K 2.40.31In 2000 and 2007 Leon completed two 1600km cycle tours of Italy including 4 mountain passes over 2000 metres elevation through France, Switzerland and North Italy and completed 5 High Country challenge rides from Mansfield to Mt Buller summit as the oldest competitor.

A Very Sincere Thank-You
On behalf of the Terrigal Trotters Committee & all Trotters Members, a heartfelt
and sincere thank-you is extended to Paul and Jeannette Davison for coordinating
Leon’s Memorial Service, held at the Greenway Chapel on Thursday, 12th
of
January. The service was a wonderful celebration of the life of a man who will be
sadly missed by all members of Terrigal Trotters. Leon was someone who Paul held
close to his heart, and this was evident in the quality and reverence in which the
service was held; thank you. Also to Kim and Andrew Mahoney, in trying
circumstances, along with Paul and Jeanette, they went above and beyond in their
professional and personal dealings with Leon and Heather; Thank-you.
“When I first came to Terrigal Trotters, it
was 3 days after arriving in Aus. Leon was
exceptionally friendly and went out of his
way to introduce me to others and make
me feel a welcome member of the club.
He was an inspiration and a true friend”.
“We will sadly miss Leon. To us he
exemplified courage, determination, and a
sense of duty, whilst always ready for a
friendly chat, or with a few words of
encouragement”.
“Leon, you will
always be
remembered for
your concern and
care, of your
loyalty and
friendship”.
“Mischievous till
the end - will
miss you - at
least I won’t get
a pumpkin in
my bed again!”
“Leon, you are up there with all the great runners, running in peace, say “hi” to Kerry
when you pass each other. You will always be remembered by so many as you have
touched so many, rest in peace now
TROTTERS CHRISTMAS PARTY
A large number of Trotters and their families turned out for the
annual Trotters Christmas Party at The Haven on Saturday, 17th
December. Those attending shared a hearty breakfast of bacon and
eggs cooked on the BBQ, along with a selection of cereals, fresh
fruit and juice.
The little, and not so little ones, had fun playing games, winning
lollies and were thrilled with a visit from the man in the big red suit
who had a present for each and every one of them.
A great time was had by all and special thanks must go to Jo and Graham Ridley; Jo was the
driving force behind the organization of the party and coordinated the games for the kids.
Graham used his carpentry and artistic skills to
make the props for the games including a
magnificent throne for Santa.
We all know Trotters love a good feed, so we
also say big thank-you to Jenny Harwood for
organizing all the food and to our beefed up BBQ
boys, Graham Davis and Tom Robertson, for their
excellent grill skills!
Most importantly, just ask the kids, we say a huge thank-you to Greg Brown for making sure
Santa could fit time in his busy schedule to pay us a visit.

2012 Round the Bay C lassic
The inaugural 11th running of the Round the Bay Classic was held on Monday 2 January 2012 and saw, in cool conditions, 28 runners reach the finish line after completing the 38 kilometres. Thanks to all the drink stop and finish volunteers for making it another successful event, we couldn’t do it without you. Mark Warren and Michael Miles soon set the pace and surprised some of the drink stops with their early arrival, in fact they were too fast for stops 6 and 7 both of whom leapfrog from stops 1 and 2. Mark hit the line in 2:28:05 some 4min quicker than the previous record, Michael also broke the previous record coming in second in 2:31:31. Ian Temblett was 3rd in a PB of 2:42:36. Katie McCail in her debut run was first lady home in 3:34:11 followed by Sonia White in 3:40:26. Diedre Moran ran an adjusted time of 3:38:15 as she was a late starter. Ten of the starters ran their first race and eight others ran a PB. Kevin McCarthy broke his previous best by around 18mins!!
Sonia White and Jo McCarthy top the ladies for the most runs having completed 8 of the 11 events followed by Sue Ingham and Sue McBride with 5 each.
The almighty Wayne Daley kept his world record in tact by completing his 11th running of the classic in a faster time then his first race in 2002!!!! Congratulations to all finishers. 35.7% were debut runners – 30% female, 70% male 25% achieved PBs – 14.3% female,85.7% male 25% of runners were ladies 75% were men!!! 7.14% broke the old record

Fitzroy Falls Fire Trail Marathon Oct 2011 with 10km and 5km Bush Runs & 5km Walk
Race Report By Ivy Krishnan
1/ Race location: The Fitzroy Falls Fire Trail Marathon is found in Morton National Park in the southern highlands of NSW. The falls are located approximately 20kms South East of Bowral. 2/ How easy was the race to get to: Fairly easy, approximately 3 hrs via the M5 and Hume Highway. 3/ Race distances: 5k Run/Walk, 10k Run, and 42.195k Marathon, all starting & finishing at the Twin Falls Bush Cottages. 4/ What type of terrain is the course: All Fire trail, elevation 550m to 700m undulating. The course was muddy this year, & due to higher rainfall, the creek crossings were a little deeper (calf height) 5/ How many drinks stops were there & what was available: There were 7 aid stations with water fruit & encouragement!!! chocolate bars and coke were available at the last few. 6/ How many competitors were in the race: Marathon- 155 with only 2 dnf's 10K- 119 5k-72 7/ Did you enjoy this event: I really enjoyed the scenery of Morton National Park, especially the water falls, Twin Falls & Fitzroy Falls. 8/ What would you say were the good & bad points about this event: The event was well organised with a friendly atmosphere. The best part was that every Marathon runner received a huge hamburger ( & I mean huge) at the finish. 9/ What would you rate this event out of 10? I would say 8 out of 10, I really enjoyed it.
Terrigal Trotters is going to schedule a series of runs along The Great North Walk during 2012 to give members the opportunity to run in some different locations and to see some of the course along which the GNW100s event is run each November. The GNW Series will also, hopefully, encourage some Trotters to sample long‐distance trail running for the first time in a supported environment. The distances vary between 25 and 40 kilometres and runners should be fit enough to slowly jog most of the flats and downhills while walking the uphills. All of the runs include some “technical” sections which may include rocks, roots, mud and steep slopes (see the GNW Series Guides for more detail about the individual runs).
Details of all of the runs, including links to the detailed Guides for each run, can be found on the T rotters website. (www.ter rigaltrotters.com.au)
You can also see a Google Map showing the various runs on the T rotters website.
The general format of the runs will a bus pick-up from Ter rigal Haven (and possibly other Central Coast locations) early on a Sunday morning for transport to the Start.
Runners will then travel at their own speed along the route using the maps and directions provided to the F inish location where the bus will be waiting.
Faster runners will have to wait for the slowest runners to finish before the bus returns to Ter rigal. As an alternative, they could run extra distance, but still finish in the same place. If this is planned, then Dave Byrnes must be advised beforehand so that we know where all runners are.
The maximum time allowed for each run is roughly equivalent to the time it would take to complete the course jogging the flats and downhills, and walking the uphills. W e will, of course, have to account for everybody before the bus returns to Ter rigal and will leave earlier than the estimated time if all runners have finished.
T rotters will provide some light refreshments – maybe cold drinks – for runners when they finish. If any participants would like to volunteer to organise additional food and drink (maybe a BB Q), they should contact Dave Byrnes.
All runners should leave a change of clothes and some of their own food and refreshments on the bus for when they finish (no alcohol can be consumed on the bus).
The cost for runners will be $25 per head and this will be payable in advance to Dave Byrnes to reserve your place on the bus.
There will not be any food or drink stops provided during the run so all runners will need to be self-sufficient. A minimum of three litres of fluids should be car ried, particularly if the weather is warm. If there is anybody who would like to help with drink stations for runs in the Series (this would probably require driving their own vehicle to a point on the run with road access) they should contact Dave Byrnes.
The last run in the ser ies is the annual G ir rakool to Patonga Run and will have drink stations.
For safety reasons, all runners must car ry the same mandatory equipment as G N W100s runners. That is: o Detailed maps and detailed directions as issued by Dave Byrnes on the day. o Waterproof map case (zip-lock plastic bag is sufficient). o Mobile phone (phone number must be provided to Dave Byrnes on registration) o Compass. o Whistle. o Rain jacket. o Broad compressive bandage (for first aid treatment of snake or spider bite) o Water container/Camelbak (3 litres recommended).

After a few quiet hours out in the boat, the boy became curious about the world around him. He looked up at his dad and asked "How do fish breath under water?" His dad thought about it for a moment, then replied, "I really don't know, son." The boy sat quietly from another moment, then turned back to his dad and asked, "How does our boat float on the water?" Once again his dad replied, "Don’t know, son." Pondering his thoughts again, a short while later, the boy asks "Why is the sky blue? "Again, his dad replied. "Don’t know, son." The inquisitive boy, worried he was annoying his father, asks this time "Dad, do you mind that I'm asking you all of these questions?" "Of course not son." replied his dad, "How else are you ever going to learn anything?"
Hoka One One. What are and are they any good? Quite a few of you have noticed and enquired about the ridiculously large pair of shoes I have been wearing since my return to running after a long layoff with a dodgy knee. So I thought I’d let you know my thoughts about these weird looking shoes.
Hoka One One apparently means ”Time to fly”, in Maori. I have a pair of La Mafate, which is the trail version of the shoe.
I bought them to help me through a knee injury. The first thing I noticed when I put them on, was a feeling of tallness (which I’m not
accustomed to) and for that reason alone, I think Dennis should buy a pair immediately. Despite their obvious size, I actually had to buy a size larger than my normal shoes, as they felt small in the toebox. They look heavy, but are in fact very light for their size.
My first steps felt every bit as strange as the shoes did to look at. The sole is set to give a roll forward with each step which helps with downhill running and as you might think, they are a very soft ride. They didn’t feel bad or uncomfortable, just different to anything I’ve tried before. I did quite a bit of walking to wear them in before running. When it comes to running they are very comfortable, surprisingly easy to run in and they don’t feel big. I have run on both road and trail and I feel they are better suited to the road, because the road surface is more even. They take the shock out of running on hard surfaces and you role from one step to the next.
When on the trails I feel a little unstable on rough ground due to the extra height, a bit like a lady in stilettos. Also they don’t have great grip in the wet on rocky surfaces. However, I am getting used to them and lots of runners have been very successful in them on trail events like the GNW100. I haven’t done that many K’s so can’t say how well they wear, but I think they might have made the sole a bit thin to cut down on weight and therefore may not be the longest lasting shoe. At $229 I would hope to get plenty of K’s out of them to justify the outlay.
To sum up; I think these shoes are very good, they are comfortable and a soft ride. I think they are useful to heavier and injured runners. They are good for slower training runs to take some of the stress out of training. They would probably help if legs are sore, e.g. after a race or long training run. They would also be good at the back end
of an ultra if your feet are beat up.
Like all shoes they are not going to be for everyone so think before you buy.
I like them and they are growing on me each time I
run in them. I think it’s a case of working out when and where to run in them. Will I buy another pair? Probably. If you want to check out these shoes go to Wamberal Physiotherapy, Ghersi Ave, Wamberal. Ridler
Six Foot Track Tragics It’s coming up to that time of year when a number of Trotters start thinking about the Six Foot Track Marathon. For those of you who are not aware it is a 45km race in March through the Blue Mountains starting at the Explorers Tree near Katoomba and finishing at the Jenolan Caves. It’s tough, hilly, often hot and not for the faint of heart. This race was a great favourite of Leon’s and I thought I’d have a look and see how many times he had completed the event. Then I decided to have a look and see who else didn’t get the message first time around. So here’s a list of Trotters who have done five or more. I hope I haven’t missed anyone. AND FINALLY…
An Aussie bloke is having a quiet drink in a bar and leans over to the big guy
next to him and says, 'Do you wanna hear a Kiwi joke?
The big guy replies, 'Well mate, before you tell that joke, you should know
something. I'm 1.90m tall, 125 kg and I played as a forward for the All
Blacks."
"The guy next to me is 1.85m, weighs 115 kg and he's an ex-All Black lock."
"Next to him is a bloke who's 2m tall, weighs 120 kg and he's a current All
Black second rower. Now do you still want to tell that Kiwi joke?"
The Aussie bloke says, "Nah, not if I'm going to have to explain it three
times."

A Kiwi walks into a Sydney unemployment office.
He marches straight up to the counter and says, "Hi! I want to apply for the
dole, I hate being on welfare and I'd much rather have a job but I have
looked everywhere and just can't find any."
The clerk behind the Centrelink desk says, "Your timing is excellent. We just
got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who needs a
chauffeur/bodyguard for his two twin 21 year old nymphomaniac
daughters. You'll have to drive them around in his Mercedes, but he'll
supply all of your clothes. You'll have a three-bedroom apartment above
the garage. Because of the long hours, meals will be provided. You'll be
expected to escort his daughters on their frequent overseas holidays to
Tahiti and the Bahamas. The starting salary is $250,000 a year".
The Kiwi says, "No way mate, you gotta be bullshitting me!"
The Centrelink officer says, "Yeah, well, you started it".
