ABORIGINAL EDUCATION & AECG At Terrigal Public School Aboriginal perspectives are integrated across all Key Learning Areas from Kindergarten to Year 6.

The school’s Aboriginal Committee aims to develop greater student understanding of Aboriginal history and culture. Terrigal Public School and the Committee work together to develop programs and activities to educate all students about Aboriginal history, culture and contemporary Aboriginal Australia and promote the learning outcomes of Aboriginal students.

Our school is part of the Kurriwa Aboriginal Education Consultative Group. The Kurriwa AECG includes representatives of local schools, parents of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, and local Aboriginal Community members. The group works to improve the educational outcomes for students.

The Kurriwa AECG meets on the Monday evening of Week 5 each term at Bateau Bay. ACCIDENTS AT SCHOOL

If a serious accident occurs at school, parents or emergency contacts will be telephoned as soon as possible. An ambulance will be called and the student transported to Casualty, at the Principal’s discretion, if parents or contacts cannot be reached.

It is essential that parents provide the front office with up-to-date contact details for key family members. Emergency contact numbers must be provided.

It is essential that parents notify the school whenever contact details change so that an appropriate support person can be contacted in case of emergencies.

ASSEMBLY An assembly for the whole school is held each Friday morning (weather permitting). During these assemblies recognition is given to the many wonderful achievements of students at our school. Additionally, the recipients of the weekly class Merit Awards are announced. Team assemblies are held at various times during the week. Teachers will inform you of these times at the beginning of each school year. The assemblies are managed by the students of the school and classes take turns in presenting these assemblies. Many awards are presented at these assemblies. They include Merit Cards and Certificates, which recognise achievements of students. Assemblies are either whole school assemblies or team assemblies. Parents are warmly invited to share these occasions with us.

ATTENDANCE REQUIRMENTS All children aged between 6 and 17 years of age are legally required to attend school during school times. The students are required by law to attend school on each day that instruction is provided. All schools are required to keep official records of daily attendance. Daily attendance includes attending learning activities such as excursions and sporting events organised by the school. The school records all absences and a note of explanation written and signed by a parent is required for each absence. Leave of absence is recorded if a justifiable reason is given. It is the parent/caregiver’s duty to ensure regular and punctual school attendance. Home School Liaison Officers are specially trained teachers who work with school staff, families and students to improve student attendance at school. Late Arrival/Early Departure A late arrival is recorded as a Partial Absence and must be explained in writing, as for other absences. Please attend the office and speak to the staff to receive a partial absence slip. If for any reason you plan to remove your child from school during school hours, please write a note to the Class Teacher on the day of the planned departure. When you come to collect your child, please visit the school office so that you can sign your child out and obtain an ‘early leaver’ note for the teacher.

6

Page 7: Terrigal Public School Information Booklet 1 0 2 · TERRIGAL PUBLIC SCHOOL . INFORMATION BOOKLET . Table of Contents . ... We strive to ignite passion for learning and nurture curiosity.

Extended Absences (More than 5 Days) Students are encouraged to attend each day. Families should plan holidays and extended absences to coincide with school holidays. For absences in excess of five school days, please contact the office to obtain a special exemption form or download a copy from our website. BAND From Year 3 children can elect to learn to play a musical instrument by undertaking tuition from the Central Coast Conservatorium. Hire fees and tuition fees apply. Rehearsals and tuition take place before school one morning a week and also during class time. The School Band competes at the Central Coast Band Festival. The band also performs at Presentation Day and various other school events during the year. BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE This service operates as a not for profit community based organisation. The Before and After School Care building is located within the school grounds. The service provides care for children before and after school. Please ring 4384 5645 for further information.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS Terrigal Public School recognises that there is a diverse range of beliefs, needs and celebrations within our school community. For many families birthdays are a significant event each year. For other families birthdays are not celebrated or recognised. For some students traditional birthday ‘foods’ create a problem due to allergens. At Terrigal Public School we encourage a healthy lifestyle. Aim To allow students to share their birthday celebration with class mates whilst recognising the health needs and beliefs of other students.

7

Page 8: Terrigal Public School Information Booklet 1 0 2 · TERRIGAL PUBLIC SCHOOL . INFORMATION BOOKLET . Table of Contents . ... We strive to ignite passion for learning and nurture curiosity.

Policy

1. Families can opt in or out of class birthday celebrations.

2. Families are able to provide items to classmates in recognition of their child’s birthday. 2.1 These items may be food based (as outlined below) or another non-food item.

2.2 These items need prior approval from the class teacher. (Via the student diary)

3. If families choose to celebrate their child’s birthday with classmates by providing food they must:

• Provide sufficient for every member of the class. Items are not to be given to students in other classes.

• Provide a small cupcake or frozen fruit tube for each child. Alternatively a fruit platter (no kiwi-fruit) to share. No whole cakes requiring cutting.

• Ingredients to avoid include nuts, eggs, seafood and kiwi fruit as they are the main allergens that cause serious reactions in some of our students. Other students are intolerant to gluten.

• No candles or matches.

4. Families are not to provide: • Lolly bags or other sweets. • Other party items – such as party poppers, whistles, noise makers etc.

Procedures A note will be sent home at the beginning of each school year asking parents to indicate if they wish their child to eat food provided by other parents as part of class birthday celebrations. Parents of students with allergies, medical conditions or alternate beliefs may choose to provide an alternative for their child. Frozen fruit tubes are available from the canteen and can be ordered, with prior notice, via Flexi-schools. Non-food items could include special pencils, pens, small notebook etc. Families are to inform the teacher via the student diary of their intention to bring items to share. BOOKCLUB The Scholastic Book Club operates within the school. It is a great way to purchase quality reading materials to support your child’s learning. The school receives ‘credits’ from each order which goes towards purchasing resources for the school. Orders should be returned with correct money, in a sealed envelope, labelled with the child’s name and class by the due date. Cheques should be made payable to Scholastic Book Club. BUS PASSES Please refer to ‘Travelling to and from School’ on page 23. CHANGE OF ADDRESS / PHONE NUMBER / CIRCUMSTANCES Please notify the office if your phone number (including mobile numbers) changes, you have a change of address, work or family circumstances. It is not the school’s intent to intrude into home or family life, however, should particular circumstances exist (e.g. serious illness, deaths, separations, new siblings etc.) which may influence a child’s progress, then early notification will assist us in understanding the situation.

CHARITIES Our school supports Stewart House as its major charity and other charities at particular times. Stewart House is a holiday house for needy children and is funded solely by donations from children and teachers in public schools. Everyone is encouraged to support the fund raising activities. CHOIR

The primary choir is a group of enthusiastic and talented students. Rehearsals take place each week. The primary focus of choir in 2015 has been to develop musical skill and participate in the bi-annual Central Coast Choral Festival. This has involved learning, mastering and performing a rigorous selection of songs. The choir has also performed at the Terrigal Family Fun Fair and our school talent quest. The final performance for the year will be at our formal presentation day assembly. Choir is open to all students in years 4-6. CLASS ORGANISATION At the commencement of the school year, all students in Year 1-6 typically return to their previous year’s class with their previous teacher. This is known as Holding Pattern. This organisation is necessary due to the number of unexpected enrolments, leavers and the Department policy of staffing schools based on the number of student enrolments. Class organisation is challenging for any school that has a transient population. Parents’ understanding is sought in these special circumstances. Kindergarten students commence the school year with their Class Teachers. Every effort is made to assist new students to settle into Terrigal school routines. All classes are organised on an age (Year level) basis, with students of varying abilities in each class. Due to grade totals it is sometimes necessary to organise composite classes. There is no educational disadvantage to a child being placed in a composite class. COLLECTION OF MONEY

When money is sent to school it should be placed in an envelope clearly marked with name and class of the student, purpose and amount, and handed either to the classroom teacher or the money box located in the office. Envelopes for this purpose are sent home with notes requesting payment. We accept payments by cash, on-line or by cheque. Please note the school also has eftpos/credit card facilities. There will be a cut- off date for all excursions and school activities that will be advised on the permission note. This will

ensure that all Work Health and Safety requirements are met prior to students leaving the school. PARENT ONLINE PAYMENT (POP) Our Parent Online Payment (POP) system is now up and running. You can now make school payments online by accessing our school website and clicking on the “Make a Payment” Link. This link will take you to a secure Westpac site where you can make payments directly to the school. Items that can be paid include voluntary school contributions, excursions, sports, sales to students (such as the Year 6 jumper) and creative and practical arts activities (these include band, drama and dance). There is also a category called ‘Other’ this is to cover items not covered in the previous headings, ‘Other’ can be used to make a complete payment of a school invoice. When you access the $ Make a payment you must enter:

• the students name and class OR • the students name and date of birth • there is no option to add multiple students in a single payment, please process each child

separately

COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS

Our school has an open school policy and parents are urged to contact the classroom teachers to discuss their child’s development. The Principal, members of the Executive and Teachers are also available to further discuss your child’s development. Parents have an open invitation to visit their child’s classroom by arrangement with the classroom teacher to participate in the learning programs.

Parents are always welcome in our school. We are aware of the importance of your role in your children’s education and believe that parents and teachers should work as a team to ensure the best education for our students. A strong, positive home-school relationship, based on mutual respect, provides sound support for students as they strive to realise their academic, physical, social, emotional and moral potential. Parents are encouraged, in the first instance, to address issues to the class teacher of their child/children. This should be done primarily through your child’s diary. If parents wish to discuss their matters further they are

encouraged to contact the Principal and/or Deputy Principal. After discussing complaints with the Principal or Deputy Principal parents who are still not happy with the proposed resolutions have the right to formalise their complaint. This complaint will be dealt with according to the Complaints Policy of the Department of Education. Our key communication tools are:

• The student diary – direct communication between home and the teacher. • Sea Breeze – our newsletter to our school community. Families can access the newsletter via our

school App, email, through our school website or in hard copy. • Our School App – can be downloaded from your favourite App store by searching for Terrigal Public

School. SHARED PARENTING ARRANGEMENTS We recognise that families in our community take many forms. Where court or consent orders are in place we ask that you provide a copy of the fully signed and court stamped orders. This will allow us to make decisions about the care of students which align with the orders. If no orders are in place then the school will recognise both parents as having equal parenting responsibility. DANCE There is a Dance Program in the school. Girls and boys are encouraged to participate in the program. The Terrigal Public School dance groups are of a high standard and have an outstanding reputation in the local community. The dance groups perform in a wide range of areas including neighbouring schools, local area and Central Coast Dance Festival and Starstruck Festival. DIARIES

Each child is provided with a school diary. This is a key means of communicating with your child’s teacher. The staff at Terrigal Public School view school diaries as extremely valuable and useful for parents, teachers and students. This diary is a way of keeping regular communication open between parents and class teachers.

• It is the responsibility of parents to read and sign the diary every night.

• It is your child’s responsibility to record homework details and school events of importance.

• It is the teacher’s responsibility to read the diaries every day and communicate important class and school information to you.

Diaries will also be used to convey personal information on your child’s progress throughout the year. Diaries also contain pages where the child’s behaviour is rated each week. Please ensure that you sign the appropriate pages in your child’s diary to ensure they can participate fully in school activities at Terrigal Public School. These pages include the Terrigal Public School Internet agreement, publishing agreement, and child protection agreement.

DOGS Dogs are NOT permitted on school grounds! Please make sure that family pets do not end up at school. Parents are advised that under the Companion Animals Act 1998 school grounds are a Prohibited Area and dogs must not be brought on to the school grounds. The owner of a dog found on school grounds, is liable to a fine of $110. ENROLMENT PROCEDURES All kindergarten children can commence school at the beginning of the year if they turn 5 years of age before 1st August of that year. Parents are requested to fill in enrolment forms and return them to school during the year before their child is due to be enrolled in kindergarten – by July if possible. Proof of age must be shown before a child can be accepted into a kindergarten class. Documentary evidence must also be sighted to support the enrolment applications.

• Birth certificate (if not, citizenship papers or visa/passport) • Immunisation papers • Proof of student’s residential address (i.e. electricity account, water/rates notice) • If neither parent was born in Australia, citizenship or visa/passports must be sighted.

Transfer of children If a student is transferring to another school, parents are requested to notify the school beforehand in writing. Parents must ensure that all school accounts are paid prior to transfer and that all school property is returned (library books, band instruments/music, sporting representative shirts and so forth). Out of Area Enrolments As we are a growing school with limited space ‘out of area’ enrolments are generally not accepted. EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS Stationery and Textbook Packs Stationery and Textbook packs are available for Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 from Class Teachers as soon as classes are formed. Each kit contains the equipment necessary to operate effectively as a student and contains items required for each particular grade. They are sold at a reduced price which, because of our bulk buying power (and because we don’t pay the GST) is approximately half the retail price. Parents are advised of the contents of each stationery pack each year. Years 3 to 6 have book packs only and are asked to supply their own stationery packs. All packs purchased will remain at school. EXCURSIONS

As an integral part of the learning programs in the school, excursions (trips outside the school) are organised. Students can only attend these excursions with the permission of their parents. Information about excursions and permission notes are

forwarded to parents. Your child’s participation in these excursions is dependent on the permission note and the payment being forwarded to the school. Please note that payment will need to be received by the due date. Parents will be informed of excursion programs. FAMILY CONTRIBUTION SCHEME Schools are funded by the state and federal governments to provide a basic education to students. As a school community we strive to provide additional learning opportunities to students. To assist with the purchase of additional resources, which enhance learning programs, each family is asked to pay a Voluntary School Contribution. Information regarding this scheme is sent to all families during Semester 1.

INFECTIOUS DISEASES

Disease Description Incubation Period

Infectious Period Exclusion Period

Conjunctivitis Conjunctivitis is an eye condition where the conjunctiva (the clear membrane that covers the white part of the eye and lines the inner surface of the eyelids) becomes inflamed. The inflammation can have many causes – the most common are infection, allergy and irritation.

1-3 days Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are infectious while there is discharge from the eye.

Children with infectious conjunctivitis should be excluded until the discharge from the eyes has stopped.

Croup Croup is a barking cough from any kind of inflammation of the larynx (voice box) that occurs in children. It is common. Several viruses may cause croup. The characteristic features of croup are a harsh, barking cough and a noisy, harsh sound when breathing in.

2-4 days Shortly before the onset of symptoms and during the active stage of the disease.

The child should stay at home until feeling well. Croup usually gets better in 3-4 days.

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

It is a common viral infection. It is not related to the disease in cattle with a similar name. Symptoms include tiny blisters on various parts of the body, including in the mouth and on the fingers, palms of hands, buttocks, soles of feet, upper arms or upper legs. The blisters last a little longer than a week. Some children may also have a fever, sore throat, runny nose or cough.

3-5 days People are infectious as long as the blisters contain fluid. Faeces can remain infectious for several weeks.

Children with hand, foot and mouth disease should be excluded until all blisters have dried.

Head Lice Head lice are insects that live in hair and suck blood from the scalp. They are a nuisance because they can cause itching of the scalp, but they do not cause disease or illness.

Eggs take 7-10 days to hatch. Adult lice can lay new eggs after another 6-10 days.

As long as the eggs or lice are alive, they can spread to other people by direct head-to-head contact.

Children do not have to be sent home immediately. The child may return as soon as effective treatment has started. An effective treatment is when a treatment is used and all lice are dead.

Impetigo (School Sores)

Impetigo is a skin infection caused by Staphylococcus and/or Streptococcus bacteria. Impetigo appears as flat, yellow, crusty or moist patches or blisters on the skin, usually in exposed areas such as the face, arms and legs. The sores can be more than 1 cm in diameter. The disease is very infectious, but it is not dangerous.

Usually 1-3 days

People are infectious for as long as there is fluid weeping from the sores. They are no longer infectious 24 hours after starting antibiotic treatment or when the sores have healed.

Children with impetigo should be excluded until appropriate antibiotic treatment has commenced. Any sores or exposed skin should be covered with a watertight dressing.

Measles Measles is a highly infectious and serious disease. Symptoms include a fever, cough, and sore, red eyes. This is followed by a rash of large, flat, reddish blotches that often join up and completely cover the skin. The rash spreads over the entire body, and usually disappears within 6 days.

7-18 days, usually 10 days

4-5 days before the rash begins until the fourth day after the rash appears.

Children with measles should be excluded for at least 4 days after the appearance of the rash.

Mumps Is an infection caused by a virus that is now uncommon in Australia due to immunisation. Symptoms include swelling of the salivary glands, high fever and headache.

12-25 days, usually 16-18 days

The infectious period begins up to 6 days before the glands begin to swell and for up to 9 days after swelling begins.

People with mumps should be excluded for 9 days after the onset of selling.

Pertussis (Whooping Cough)

It is a highly infectious disease caused by infection of the throat with the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. The disease usually starts like a cold, with a runny nose, tiredness and sometimes a mild fever. A cough then develops, usually in short bouts followed by a deep gasp (or whoop). The cough can last up to 3 months.

Usually 9-10 days but may range from 6 to 20 days.

A person is infectious from the beginning of the cold-like symptoms. They may remain infectious for up to 3 weeks if untreated or until they have been treated with an antibiotic for 5 full days.

Children with pertussis should be excluded for 21 days from the onset of symptoms or until they have taken an appropriate antibiotic for at least 5 days.

Rubella (German Measles)

Symptoms begin like a cold, with a slight fever, sore throat and enlarged lymph glands in the neck. A rash appears 2-3 days later beginning on the face and spreading to the trunk. The spots are pale pink at first and merge to form patches. The rash disappears after a few days.

14-21 days. Usually 16-18 days.

The infectious period begins 7 days before the rash appears and lasts until at least 4 days after the rash appears.

People with rubella should be excluded for at least 4 days after the appearance of the rash and until the person feels well.

Varicella (Chickenpox)

The disease starts with cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, mild fever, cough and fatigue. These are followed by a characteristic spotty rash.

14-16 days but can vary from 10-21 days

From 2 days before the rash appears until all blisters have formed crusts.

Children should be excluded until all blisters have dried.

12

Page 13: Terrigal Public School Information Booklet 1 0 2 · TERRIGAL PUBLIC SCHOOL . INFORMATION BOOKLET . Table of Contents . ... We strive to ignite passion for learning and nurture curiosity.

IMMUNISATION

All children should be immunised against the normal childhood diseases. In the event of an outbreak of a vaccine preventable disease, the un-immunised child will be excluded from attending school for the duration of the outbreak. An immunisation certificate should be presented to the school on enrolment.

KEY LEARNING AREAS – (KLA) The primary curriculum is divided into six Key Learning Areas (KLAs) that must be studied by all students in each year of their primary school career. These are:

English: Aspects of English include handwriting and using digital technologies, reading and viewing, spelling, speaking and listening, writing and representing, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary, thinking imaginatively, expressing themselves, reflecting on learning. Mathematics: Aspects of Mathematics include number, patterns and algebra, space, data and measurement. Science and Technology: Students learn about the natural and built environments by investigating, by designing and making and by using technology. Human Society and its Environment (HSIE) (Including History and Geography): Students learn about change, continuity, cultures, environments and social systems and structures. Creative Arts: includes music, visual arts, craft, drama and dance. Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE): This includes growth and development, games and sport, gymnastics, dance, active lifestyle, personal health choices, safe living and interpersonal relationships. Students are taught mainly by their class teacher. However, a range of specialist teachers are employed at Terrigal Public School to support the education of our students. These specialist teachers include the Teacher/Librarian, Learning & Support Teacher (LAST), Reading Recovery Teachers and Relief Teachers. The New South Wales Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards determines the curriculum taught in accredited NSW schools. All schools are issued with a mandatory syllabus for each of the Key Learning Areas. The Board of Studies has identified some curriculum priorities and general capabilities which are taught across all learning areas. These include: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia, sustainability, critical and creative thinking, ethical understanding, information and communication technology capability, intercultural understanding, literacy, numeracy, personal and social capability, civics and citizenship, difference and diversity, work and enterprise. LABELLING OF PERSONAL ITEMS INCLUDING CLOTHING The marking of items for recognition and return purposes is most important and unfortunately this request is often ignored. This applies to clothing as well as bags, lunch containers, shoes, pencils, rulers etc. The expense of replacing costly clothing items can often be avoided by taking a short amount of time to mark clearly the children’s jumpers, raincoats, hats etc. It is more likely that items are returned to their owner if they are clearly labelled. Many children cannot identify their property when it is displayed for collection. This results in regular donations to the school clothing pool and various charities. LEARNING SUPPORT TEAM Terrigal Public School staff is committed to meeting the needs of all students, including students in need of enrichment and extension, as well as those requiring learning assistance. Teaching and learning strategies focus on developing responsible, self-directed and motivated learners with opportunities for individual improvement.

Terrigal Public School has a whole school Learning Support Team (LST) that contributes to the provision of quality teaching and learning strategies to meet individual academic, social and behavioral needs of

students. The LST draws on expertise, experience and resources from within our school, region and local community. All team members work together to implement an effective support cycle for students.

The LST coordinates the Learning Assistance Program (LAP). This program supports students experiencing difficulties in learning. Terrigal Public School also runs a targeted program designed to support the participation of students with disabilities in the full range of programs offered by the school. Terrigal Public School currently has a Support Unit with three classes. Two classes are for students with moderate intellectual disabilities and the third class supports students with Autism. Individual Learning Programs (ILP) are implemented for all students in these three classes.

Reading Recovery Terrigal Public School has two Reading Recovery teachers who provide the opportunity for students in Year 1 to receive additional reading assistance. This is an intensive one on one reading program. EAL/D (English as an Additional Language or Dialect) EAL/D learners are students whose first language is a language or dialect other than Standard Australian English and who require additional support to assist them to develop English language proficiency. Students must meet certain criteria to be eligible for this assistance e.g. to be newly arrived in Australia, be from a language background other than English and in need of EAL/D tuition or be enrolling in an Australian school for the first time. Chaplain Our Chaplain works with the Learning Support team to support students by listening and providing ideas, skills and strategies to manage challenges in everyday life. LIBRARY

Terrigal Public School's library serves both the students and staff in a variety of ways. Reading for enjoyment is a focus, and to this end the library is stocked with a variety of fiction and nonfiction titles. Every class visits the Library each week for borrowing and teaching.

The library fosters a love of books and reading and provides lunchtime activities for students including games such as chess, jigsaws and puzzles, listening to stories and the opportunity to borrow and return items.

The library has a fully computerised circulation system allowing every student to borrow from the collection. Books can be borrowed for two weeks and can be renewed for longer if required. Students are asked to bring a library bag to protect books and to keep them in a safe place at home. Premier’s Reading Challenge Students complete a reading log by reading books marked for their age group. On completion they may receive a certificate. All students are encouraged to participate. Premier’s Spelling Bee Students compete against their classmates to become the school representative champion speller. LOST PROPERTY All material brought to school, especially clothing, must be labelled with your child’s name. A lost property rack is located inside the stage door of the hall. Please look for lost property in the hall and if unable to find it then contact the class teacher. Students are encouraged to be responsible for items they bring to school.

MEDICATION The school prefers not to administer medication to students as medical staff are not employed at the school. Where administration of medication in school hours is essential to the student’s health and educational welfare, the procedures set out in the school Policy for the Administration of Medication to students will be strictly enforced. Copies are available from the front office. Should your child need any kind of medication throughout the day, please remember the following regulations: • Prescribed medication is usually sent on a daily/weekly basis. It must be contained in a

pharmacy labelled container detailing the student’s name and the prescribed dosage. • The parent needs to provide written instructions about any special requirements for

storage indicated by their medical practitioner or pharmacist. • Students must not carry medications unless there is a written agreement between the school and the

student’s parents. • For some conditions, prescribed medication and equipment must be immediately accessible, e.g.

asthma and anaphylaxis medications such as Ventolin asthma relievers and epipen adrenaline auto injectors. In such cases, arrangements for the carrying of medication and equipment will be devised and documented by the school.

PLAYGROUND Rules Rules have been developed to ensure your child’s safety and security in the school grounds. Children will be informed by their teachers of these rules. A few of these rules include:

• Respect for other children; • Play only in areas supervised by a teacher; • Walk on all hard surfaces; and • Children sit with class teacher while eating their lunch. Supervision Children are supervised in the school grounds from 8.30 am to 3.00 pm. Teachers are not officially on duty at school until 8.30 am so it is expected that your child will not arrive before that time. Children who for any reason arrive at school earlier are expected to sit on the seats in the assembly area. The fixed play equipment in the playground is not to be used before or after school, as per safety regulations. Signs relating to this issue are posted around the school. POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR EXPECTATIONS A behaviour record is registered in each child’s diary to indicate the standard of behaviour achieved by each

child. At Terrigal Public School it is expected that children will be respectful of themselves and others and be ready to engage in classroom learning.

All students and teachers have the right to be treated fairly and with dignity, in an environment free from disruption, interruption, harassment and discrimination. To achieve this, the school strives to maintain high standards of student behaviour. Appropriate interventions will be implemented to assist students’ development of acceptable behaviour.

The Department of Education has procedures for the Suspension and Expulsion of students. These state that the Principal must suspend immediately any student who:

• is in possession of a suspected illegal drug • is violent or threatens serious physical violence • is in possession of a prohibited weapon.

Principals may also suspend any student who:

• is persistently disobedient • engages in criminal behaviour related to the school.

Suspension may be a short suspension of up to and including four school days or a long suspension of up to and including twenty school days. PUBLIC SPEAKING Students can progress from school public speaking to regional finals in this activity. Students research different topics and learn the skills of public speaking. 20

Page 21: Terrigal Public School Information Booklet 1 0 2 · TERRIGAL PUBLIC SCHOOL . INFORMATION BOOKLET . Table of Contents . ... We strive to ignite passion for learning and nurture curiosity.

REFUND POLICY Each year teachers plan a number of excursions, guest speakers and various activities which enhance the educational programs being offered in classrooms. These activities usually have a cost associated with them. Occasionally children are disappointed when they are unable to participate in the activity because they are sick on the day, or late to catch the bus etc. In such cases parents often request a refund of the fees that have been paid. In making a decision regarding a refund one issue has to be considered: Has the school already spent money for the student to participate in the activity? If the school has already had to pay for the activity then a refund cannot be given. Often, particularly in the case of larger excursions, venues and accommodation providers charge us on the numbers we provide in advance of the actual excursion. These venues hire staff, buy food, and provide bedding etc. based on those numbers therefore the costs still exist even if a student does not attend. With bus companies we are still charged for a booked seat even if it is not used. Therefore it is our policy that when a student is unable to attend an activity, due to a legitimate reason, the school will refund money paid less funds already committed or spent. REPORTING TO PARENTS – PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS Students’ progress is reported formally to parents twice a year, although the school welcomes and seeks more regular contact when required. Terrigal Public School will issue a Written School Report at the end of Term 2. Parents may request a one-on-one interview with the teacher if desired, which will be arranged for a future time. An end-of-year written report will also be issued towards the end of Term 4 which reviews the child’s academic progress over the year as well as social and personal development. Again, one-on-one interviews may be arranged if desired. Parents and Carers may contact the teacher at any time should there appear to be a problem or if you have some matter you wish to discuss. As Class Teachers are fully occupied with teaching, please contact the office to leave a message, or write a note in your child’s diary. SCHOOL BANKING The school encourages all students to have a School Bank Account. School Banking is an excellent opportunity to begin teaching your child the wise use of money and to ensure good banking habits. Should you wish your child to bank through the school, please complete the required forms obtainable from the front office or the school website. School banking takes place on Tuesdays with the deposit books being returned to the class teacher each Thursday. This service raises funds for the school and rewards savings with gifts after every 10 deposits. SCHOOL COUNSELLOR The Counsellor is at school three days per week. Our counsellor is a trained psychologist and her main role is the assessment of learning difficulties. The Counsellor works with children, teachers and parents, usually when the student may be experiencing some problems in learning or social adjustment. If parents have any concerns regarding their children, please speak to their teacher in the first instance. A referral can then be made to the Counsellor via the Learning and Support Team. SCHOOL HOLIDAYS AND SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAYS The NSW Department of Education operates on a four term year. Parents will be notified of vacation dates each year. Five School Development days are held each year. These are held on the first day of Terms 1, 2 and 3 and the final two days of Term 4. You will be advised of the agenda in the school Newsletter. These are days when students do not attend school. During School Development Days school staff participate in training and development sessions with a focus on enhancing staff skills and improving student learning outcomes. 21

Sick children should not be sent to school. If students become sick at school their parents will be telephoned and asked to collect them immediately. Parents are required to provide the school with the name and phone number of an Emergency Contact for occasions when parents cannot be reached. It is important that information for Emergency Contacts is kept up to date.

Children should be kept at home if they: • need to be excluded from school in accordance with Department of Health regulations relating to

immunisations or, • are suffering any of the illnesses or complaints listed below:

Influenza Severe asthma Temperature Vomiting Diarrhoea Severe skin rash or infection Headache, earache, tooth-ache Discharge from the eyes, nose or ears

SUPPORT UNIT FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES The Support Unit at Terrigal Public School has three classes catering to 27 students with moderate/severe intellectual disabilities and students with Autism. All students have an Individualised Learning Plan (ILP) that allows the children to access the curriculum with personalised adjustments. There is also a strong emphasis on building social skills and learning practical living skills to enable and encourage the students to become independent members of the community. Students in the support unit integrate across the school regularly and participate in all school activities.

These houses compete in a formal setting for all school athletics, cross country and swimming carnivals and as an informal setting in Years 3 to 6 for “within-class” groupings and achievement activities. STUDENT WELFARE AND DISCIPLINE The Staff at Terrigal Public School are committed to meeting the needs of all students. The Student Welfare Policy has three targets: enhancing effective learning and teaching for all students, enhancing positive school climate and discipline and enhancing community participation.
