Traveling south from the Harvard Road trail-head follow the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail through The Cleveland Metroparks Ohio and Erie Canal Reservation. This section (approximately 8 miles) is paved and fabulous fun with lots of twists and turns and two suspension bridges.

The trail switches to crushed limestone at Rockside Road as the trail enters the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The crushed limestone trail surface is not as bad as it sounds. The trail is smooth and worn in as it is nearly 200 years old. You can still travel at a decent speed and the scenery is spectacular. The downside is that it is dusty (or muddy) and it will get everywhere. Keep a loose grip to avoid friction build up.

The trail through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is 20 miles and follows the Cuyahoga River and the Ohio and Erie Canal built between 1825 and 1832. The park is abundant with wildlife and there are many interpretive signs, visitor centers, and his-toric demonstrations. Drinking fountains are at Canal Road, Boston and Peninsula. There are restaurants and a bike shop in Peninsula. There is a canal boat museum in Boston. The Cuyahoga Valley is deep so attempting to leave the towpath in any direction involves a steep climb.

There are bald eagles near Station Road and Great Blue Herons have a giant nesting area at Bath Road. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Rail-road runs the length of the park and has a Bike Aboard deal where you and your bike can ride the train for only $3. The train runs 3 times a day in each direction, June through October, Wednesday–Sunday.

Akron — Massillon

Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail contiguous through Akron In the spring of 2012 Summit County complet-ed their sections of the Towpath Trail eliminat-ing the on-road sections in Akron and tricky interchanges around Barberton. The route is beautiful and easy to navigate. The entire route through Summit County is now on-trail except for a few blocks in downtown Akron. The route is well signed with one exception described in the detail.

Navigating from the Ohio to Erie Trailhead at Harvard Road to and around downtown Cleveland by bicycle is a bit complicated be-cause of the Cuyahoga River. Cuyahoga trans-lates to crooked river and it is very crooked. The land around the river, known as “the flats” is a large pit and you need to know how to get down in there, find a way to cross the river, and then get back up and out the other side. There is a lot of industry and few roads. Or you can go over the flats and the river on one of two bridges: The Hope Memorial Bridge (AKA Lorain Carnegie Bridge) or the Veterans Me-morial Bridge (AKA Detroit Superior Bridge). Both of these bridges have a bikeway that is separate from vehicle traffic.

There is a fun tradition of tire dipping for those who ride the entire length of the Ohio to Erie Trail. You begin with your back tire in Lake Erie and end with your front tire in the Ohio River, or the reverse, depending on the direction of your ride. You cannot get your tire in Lake Erie from downtown, the entire city waterfront is on piers, many feet above the waves. To tire dip go to Edgewater Park which is an easy pedal just west of downtown. Details below.

Originally the The Ohio to Erie Trail accessed downtown Cleveland via the West 3rd Street Bridge which is often closed. The current route connects the trail to downtown (and Edgewater) via Tremont.

The trail comes to an end at the Harvard Road Trailhead parking lot, in the shadows of the big Alcoa plant on the hill and the Harvard Denison bridge just ahead in the distance.

This photo is looking east down old Harvard Road. Just beyond the railroad tracks is the trailhead for the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath. The large building in the background is the Alcoa plant and it can be seen for miles. The car is on the bridge that crosses the Cuyahoga River.

From this trailhead parking lot, the trail be-comes a road route. From the trailhead park-ing lot, turn left (west) onto Harvard Road. You will cross the Cuyahoga River in about 200 feet. Just past the river, in another 200 feet, you will turn right at the light, onto Jennings Road (north).

There is a sports bar/restaurant at the corner of Harvard and Jennings, called Cleats. Pretty good bar food (burgers, etc.) and decent beer (Great Lakes). There is a bike rack on the Jennings Road side.

The bike route continues north on Jennings. Follow the green bike route signs pointing you to the Tremont neighborhood. There is a bike lane but it is not maintained so take the lane and use caution as you cross the railroad tracks. In about a half mile, the bicycle trail picks up to take you behind a large retail com-plex, Steelyard Commons, in homage to the once magnificent steel mills that used to stand there. There is a gigantic Walmart, Target, Home Depot, a Subway, Chipotle, Steak and Shake, IHOP and so on. The trail runs behind the complex in a fenced-in corridor alongside a train yard and old steel mill.

After Steelyard Commons, continue on the bicycle path connector that will take you under Quigley Road through two short tun-nels and up the hill on the other side of the road. Once at the top of the hill (it’s not too bad), you will be at a traffic roundabout. Head to your right on West 14th Street. The path becomes sidewalk so get on the street at the first side street (Holmden).

Steelyard – Tremont

At the southern end of Steelyard Commons the bicycle route changes from trail to an on road route at Jennings Road.

The trail runs behind the Steelyard Commons complex in a fenced-in corridor alongside a train yard and an old steel mill.

The intersection of Harvard and Jennings near the Harvard Road Trailhead.

At the north end of Steelyard Commons, there is a bicycle path connector that will take you under Quigley Road through two short tunnels and up the hill to Tremont.

Proceed along West 14th. When you cross Clark Avenue, your are entering the Tremont neighborhood. It’s a kind of trendy place with lots of cool restaurants and pubs along the way, especially around Lincoln Park. Proceed the length of W 14th, ignoring the “End of Bike Route” sign, until you cross Fairfield.

At this point it looks as if you are getting onto the highway ramp. There is a Greek Orthodox Church on the corner. Proceed up the ramp. At the last second there is a road off the ramp on the right —follow it. It’s just a short little connector road barely 500 feet long. I don’t even think it has a name. It will take you to Abbey Avenue.

Turn left on Abbey. You will go under I-90 and the new I-90 bridge construction site and then cross the Abbey bridge, with downtown visible on your right. (note: at end of the Abby bridge there are green bicycle signs directing you to go right. Our advice is to ignore this route that is a through-the-neighborhood shortcut to the Hope Memorial Bridge.) Roll down Abbey until it dead ends into Gehring Avenue. Turn right onto Gehring. At Lorain Road (Route 10), you will make a right to go downtown, or a left to go to Edgewater Park. use the crosswalks if needed.

When you are at Lorain and Gehring, you will notice a tall tower across the street. That’s the historic West Side Market. It’s an old-world farmers market. You absolutely must stop in. Trust me on this one. It’s huge and there is an inside market and an outside market. They are open on Mondays & Wednesdays: 7 AM - 4 PM and Fridays & Saturdays: 7 AM - 6 PM. Also in the same area is the Great Lakes Brewing Company restaurant and bar as well as The Garden Market Brewery, Town Hall and many other small shops, bars, restaurants, a bike shop and a new hostel.

The highway ramp is straight ahead, The church on the right, and the short connector to Abbey Avenue is in the center.

This the other end of the Abbey Avenue connector. (Abbey Avenue is crossing left to right.) Sokolowski’s university Inn is the building on the right. Turn left to cross the Abbey Avenue Bridge.

The view looking towards downtown Cleveland from Gehring Avenue near the West Side Market. The red building is the RTA station, Cleveland’s public transportion, that includes trains and buses with bike racks.

The West Side Market is open on Mondays & Wednesdays: 7AM - 4PM and Fridays & Saturdays: 7AM - 6PM.

Tremont – Ohio City

Ignore the Tremont “End of Bike Route” sign and continue on West 14th Street.

To Downtown ClevelandTurn right off of Gehring onto Lorain, you will be heading into downtown Cleveland. It’s just over the beautiful Hope Memorial Bridge (AKA Lorain-Carnegie). Notice the art deco giants, the “Guardians of Traffic,” on either end of the bridge. At the approach to the bridge take the lane to make a left at W 20th Street onto the recently opened 14’ wide bikeway across the north side of the bridge that is separated from the traffic with a concrete rail. There is also a bike lane on the south side of the bridge if you prefer.

When you cross the bridge, you will be in downtown Cleveland, across from the Indian’s ballpark. At this point, Lorain Road turns into Carnegie Avenue. Stay on Carnegie and pass the ballpark, turn left on East 9th to get to Lake Erie, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Great Lakes Science Center and to explore downtown.

Also, just about 5 miles east of downtown is the world class Cleveland Museum of Art in university Circle. CMA is always free (except for some special exhibitions) and is closed on Mondays. Also in university Circle is the Botanical Garden, the Museum of Natural His-tory, The Crawford Aviation and Automobile Museum, and the new Museum of Contempo-rary Art (MOCA).

It’s easy to get to university Circle from downtown Cleveland. use Euclid Avenue, as it has been designated as a bike route with bike lanes running it’s length. Take Euclid (Route 20) out to East Boulevard. Turn left (north) on East Boulevard and all of the museums are right in front of you.

downtown Cleveland and Edgewater Park

“Guardians of Traffic,” and the recently opened 14’ wide bikeway across the north side of the Hope Memorial Bridge that connects Ohio City and downtown Cleveland.

To Edgewater ParkTurn left off of Gehring onto Lorain and at the next corner turn right on W 25th.

For Lake Erie access, you need to proceed west on Detroit but there is no left turn from W 25th onto Detroit heading west. To get around the block turn left (west) onto Franklin Boulevard, proceed west on Franklin Boule-vard approximately 1000 feet to W 29th, turn right (north) onto W 29th, follow W 29th 2 blocks north to Detroit. Turn left (west) onto Detroit. Proceed approximately 1 mile west on Detroit to W 65th Street. At W 65th turn right (north). Proceed north on W 65th ap-proximately 1/2 mile. W 65th dead ends at Fr. Caruso Drive. A bike path begins here, taking you north under the railroad tracks. Proceed on the path through the tunnel and down the hill on the other side. You are entering Edgewater Park. Proceed on the path under the Cleveland Memorial Shoreway, and follow the path to the left (west) to reach the public beach or turn right (east) onto Whiskey Island Road along side the marina to reach the pub-lic boat launch (no sand) approximately 1/4 mile on the left (north).

Edgewater to Abbey AvenueStart at the public boat launch (on Whiskey Island Road next to the marina) or the pub-lic beach at Edgewater Park. Head south on the bike path under the Cleveland Memorial Shoreway, proceed up the hill and through the tunnel under the railroad tracks. The path ends at W 65th Street and Fr. Caruso Drive. Proceed forward, south, on W 65th approxi-mately 1/2 mile. At Detroit Avenue, turn left (east). Proceed east on Detroit approximately 1 mile. At W 25th turn right (south). Proceed south on W 25th approximately 1/2 mile. Turn left (east) on Lorain Avenue. (see West-side Market info above). At the next intersec-tion turn right (south) on Gehring and make an immediate left onto Abbey Avenue.

Downtown to Abbey Avenueuse the Hope Memorial Bridge from the inter-section of Ontario and Carnegie in downtown Cleveland. Cross the bridge on the recently opened 14’ wide bikeway across the north side of the bridge that is separated from the traffic with a concrete rail. When the bikeway ends ignore the signage and get on the road (Lorain Avenue) and continue to the second traffic light and turn left on Gehring and im-mediately turn left onto Abbey Avenue.

Abbey Avenue to the Harvard Road TrailheadCross the Abbey Avenue bridge. As you are approaching the I-90 bridge construction and underpass turn right on a unsigned road that looks like a highway ramp. It is short connec-tor that takes you under I-90 and puts you on W 14th Street. Watch out for traffic entering from your right as you merge to onto W 14th. You could also go around the block through the neighborhood by staying on Abbey until it dead ends on W 11, turn right, then right again and proceed to W 14th to turn left.

On W 14th you will see green bike route signs directing you to the towpath. In about a mile you will approach the traffic roundabout above Steelyard Commons. At the last side street (Holmden) before the roundabout turn left and hop on the sidewalk which becomes a bike trail around the corner.

The bike trail takes you downhill, through two tunnels, and deposits you behind the giant retail complex (description above) and continues between a chain-link fence. This trail dead ends at Jennings Road. Follow the bike signs and turn left. If the bike lane is dirty take the lane and use caution at the railroad tracks. At the next traffic light turn left on Har-vard Road and cross the Cuyahoga River. The Trailhead is front of you. Turn right to pick up The Ohio to Erie Trail south on the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail.

Carol is pointing at the unsigned road that is the short connector that takes you from Abbey to W 14th. It goes right between the old and new I-90 bridges. Turn right at the spot when the bike lane inexplicably turns to brick pavers. If the road is closed due to construction you can go around the block by staying on Abbey until it dead ends then make the next two right turns, then proceed to W 14th to turn left.

soutHBouNDThe route going south out of Killbuck is easy to navigate. When the Holmes County Trail ends turn right and follow Main Street. You will see a gem of a food stop, Killbuck Sweet Shoppe. There is also a grocery store and cof-fee shop in town.

Turn right onto County Road 621 to cross Killbuck Creek. Turn right onto State Route 520 for a short distance to turn left onto County Road 6. Downshift, all the way. In my memory this was the steepest and longest climb of the entire tour.

CR 6 is rolling hills and very scenic. You will come across a statue factory. I wanted to get a concrete donkey but Guy said no. This is where you bear left and uphill onto CR 25.

Holmes County Trail to The Mohican Valley Trail: Killbuck to Brinkhaven and Danville

When following the Ohio to Erie Trail there is a road route that connects Killbuck and Brinkhaven. Killbuck is at the southern end of the Holmes County Trail. Brinkhaven is at the northeast end of The Mohican Valley Trail and is the location of The Bridge of Dreams. Dan-ville is the northern end of the Kokosing Gap Trail.

One day this route will be paved trail but for now it is one of the toughest sections due to rolling hills. Make sure to bring enough water. I do not recall seeing any place to get water. It takes us about 21/2 hours. Others will be able to do it quicker.

You need to make a hard left to continue on CR 25 at the intersection of CR 75 (on your right) and Township 13 (straight). There is a beautiful historic home on the corner.

The next place to turn is onto State Route 62 also know as Millersburg Road. It is a long downhill stretch. There are big trucks and its 55 MPH. Watch out for those buggy ruts.

At the bottom you exit Holmes County and cross into Knox County. Now you are just outside of Brinkhaven and soon you will come to The Bridge of Dreams. Here you will need to decide to use the bridge and the unpaved Mohican Valley Trail or continue on Route 62 to get into Danville.

There are two significant hills to climb on 62 vs. lots of bumps and deep buggy ruts under the loose baby powder like dirt trail. Remem-ber it is only 4 miles and on the other side is the fabulous Kokosing Gap Trail!

Generally you can get enough momentum on the downs to have enough steam for the ups. I walked this one in 2012. Pushing a loaded touring bike is no bargain! I rode up it in 2013.

In the spring of 2013 a pedestrian/bike tunnel was constructed under Route 62, near County Road 10, as part of the Holmes County Trail Project, Phase 5. When completed the trail will connect Killbuck and Brinkhaven via Glenmont.

Intersection of County Road 6 and County Road 25 has a concrete statue factory.

There is a historic home at the intersection of County Road 25 and County Road 75.

Rolling hills on County Road 25.NortHBouND Out of Danville use Route 62 or the Mohican Valley Trail to Route 62. Remember to bring enough water for a couple of hours of hilly ter-rain. The climb up Route 62 to CR 25 is signifi-cant but doable. There are lots of buggy ruts, big trucks and the traffic is 55 MPH.

At the top of the hill turn left on CR 25. At the historic house turn right to continue on CR 25. (If you go straight you will be on CR 75). Bear right on CR 6 at the concrete statue fac-tory. Be ready for the last big downhill to State Route 520. It is steep and there is a stop sign at the bottom. Turn right onto State Route 520. Turn left onto County Road 621 to cross Killbuck Creek. Turn left on Main Street to get to the Holmes County trailhead in Killbuck.

The Mohican Valley Trail is not paved.

Route 62 has big trucks and two hills going south and one big one going north.

Mile marker 11 on the south side of 3/36. It is tiny and will be hard to see!

The Heart of Ohio Trail (or HOOT) grows every year. Currently (7/2013) there are two paved sections. There is a short 2.5 mile section paved between Columbus Road and Thayer. It runs alongside Pacemakers Dragway Park, a 1/8th mile drag strip. On nice weekends in the summer you can catch a race or two.

The other section is between mile marker 11 on 3/36 and Centerburg. It's off a gravel drive near Graham Rd. The mile marker is on the south side of the highway and there is an old barn on the hillside on the north side of the highway. The paved trail starts a short walk of about 200 feet west of the gravel road.

This should all be paved soon. I would guess by 2014, but for now, you are on 3/36 for about 2.5 miles between the two sections of trail. use caution; it is a busy 55 MPH state route with big trucks!

On the north end of Columbus it is rider’s choice to use the bike trail that goes through Alum Creek Park or the bike trail that goes through Westerville. Schrock Road is used to connect these trails to the Olentangy River Trail and the Scioto River Trail to uS Route 40 / Broad Street. The road riding is a bit difficult in spots and finding the next turn can be tricky but it is overall a very nice route considering the challenges of urban riding. It is approxi-mately 25 miles.

The Westerville bike trail appears to end at South State Street. From this spot it is difficult to see that the trail continues south on the other side of S State Street.

Intersection of Charring Cross Road and Schrock Road where you will find the Westerville bike trail terminus.

The bike trail on the south side of Maxtown Road / Polaris Parkway which connects to the Alum Creek Trail via Cleveland Avenue. In this photo Carolyn is facing east, following the northbound Ohio to Erie Trail.

ALUM CREEK BIKE TRAIL SOUTH: To use the Alum Creek trail do not turn left after crossing Maxtown Road near the Home Depot entrance. Continue west on the bike trail that is on the south side of Maxtown Road. It is newly paved and perfectly smooth and seal coated.Follow this for approximately 3 miles and turn left at Cleveland Avenue where the bike trail is nice and wide and concrete (basically an oversized sidewalk) and follows along the east side of Cleveland Avenue. (note: if you miss the turn the bike trail dead ends)

NOTE DANGER: be very careful if you attempt to get across Interstate 71 using Polaris Park-way. There are many hotels and restaurants here, choose one that is on the east side of 71.

The bike trail on the east side of Cleveland Avenue. The view in this photo is looking north.

Columbus north To South page 1

NortH to soutH:When approaching Columbus from the north you will be riding on the Genoa bike trail that parallel N State Street and the Hoover Reser-voir. As you exit the woods there is uDF (con-venience store with ice cream and restrooms) that is the landmark for the beginning of the Columbus route. The bike trail turns south (left) and travels behind a giant retail com-plex that contains a Home Depot and Kroger (grocery / liquor mega store). The bicycle trail travels behind a giant retail complex where there is a Trek store and they provide free air and water to cyclists at their back door.

At the south end of this section, near the Home Depot entrance, you will cross Max-town Road which is also known as Polaris Parkway. There are restaurants here. This is where you choose to use the bike trail that goes through Alum Creek Park or the bike trail that goes through Westerville. using the Alum Creek trail is slightly longer because it travels at an angle, maybe 2 miles. We rode both and both are pleasant. Flip a coin.

WESTERVILLE BIKE TRAIL:To use the Westerville route the bike trail makes a left after crossing Maxtown Road to turn south and go behind another mega retail complex. The trail surface is perfectly smooth and seal coated and much of it is lined with shade trees. There are lots of road crossings--we counted seven. Many of them are small residential streets but all require a full stop as traffic is heavy in this suburban retail area. The tricky spot is where the bike trail appears to end at South State Street. On the north side is the dedication marker for the Ohio to

Erie Trail which is a brass plaque mounted on a knee high boulder. From this spot it is dif-ficult to see that trail continues south. use the crosswalk to get across State Street and then turn left to continue south. The trail picks up again in about 300 feet and there are bike route signs. This is a short connector that will take you behind more retail stores and dump you onto Charring Cross Road which will take you to Schrock Road where you will turn right to continue south. (note that on the other side of Schrock Road Charring Cross Road is called Brooksedge Blvd.)

The Westerville bike depot is now open. It is located just north of S State Street.

After traveling about 2 miles south on Cleveland Avenue you will notice a giant sports complex on the right and the super sized Westerville Recreation Center on the left and the trail will cross a bridge and turn left into Heritage Park. (there are bike trail connec-tors that go under the bridge and connects to the Sports Complex) After very a short dis-tance turn right to follow the brick-lined bike trail that takes you up to Main Street where you turn left to cross in front of the Westerville Fire Department and Senior Center. use the crosswalk to get across Main Street and pick up the bike trail with a right turn at the bridge.

The bike trail departs from Cleveland Avenue and continues through Heritage Park.

On the other side of Heritage Park the bike trail crosses Main Street after passing in front of the Westerville Fire Department, First Responders Park and the Senior Center. The trail picks up on the other side of Main Street before crossing the bridge.

The Alum Creek Trail is nice and scenic. In this photo Carol is riding south in the early morning, late August 2012.

You are only in Heritage Park for a few hundred feet before you need to cross the park road and turn right and follow the brick-lined bike trail up, facing traffic to get to the crossing at Main Street.

There was no sign to mark the exit from the Alum Creek Trail to Schrock Road when we were there in August 2012. The trail going under the bridge is your landmark. Exit to the left, past the orange construction cones. Continuing forward under the bridge takes you under Schrock Road and further south on the Alum Creek Trail. Currently, The Ohio to Erie Trail exits here, to the left, to get up to the road, and turns right to cross the bridge and follow Schrock Road to connect to the Olentangy Trail.

The trail continues past a lake and through the woods. You need to exit the trail with a left turn before the trail goes under Schrock Road and continues south. (on the other side of the bridge there are exit ramps so you are able to access the trail from both sides of Schrock Road) There are no signs to tell you it is Schrock Road, the trail going under the bridge is your landmark.

SCHROCK ROAD TO THE OLENTANGy TRAIL (APPROxIMATELy 7 MILES)

There are bike lanes along both sides of Schrock Road but we found them littered with debris; take the lane. This is a giant thorough-fare with heavy traffic. You will go over Inter-state 270 and over Interstate 71 and past the Budweiser plant then across the railroad tracks where you immediately turn left onto Propri-etors Road.

Columbus north To South page 3

When you see the Ohio Railway Museum on your left turn right onto E North Street and continue across High Street until E North dead ends into Evening where you turn left.

The best way to stay out of traffic is to follow Evening to cross Dublin-Granville Road and immediately turn right onto the residential street that runs along Dublin-Granville Road facing traffic. The marginal residential road becomes a bike trail that will fork at a soccer field. Bear right to go up a ramp and get onto the bridge that crosses the Olentangy River, (on the sidewalk / bike trail, facing traffic) on Dublin-Granville Road and turn left onto The Olentangy Trail at the intersection of Dublin-Granville Road and Route 315.

The Budweiser plant can be seen for miles and makes a good landmark along the east end of Schrock Road.

There is a lot to see at the Ohio Railway Museum and it makes an unmissable landmark to turn right onto E North Street from Proprietors Road. (unless you are so busy looking at the trains that you fail to notice that E North is directly across the street from the trains!)

This is the approach to the Olentangy Trail on the marginal road / bike trail that follows Dublin-Granville Road on the south side of the street, facing the Dublin-Granville Road traffic. Veer uphill to the right to cross the bridge on the bike path along Dublin-Granville Road.

Turn left (south) on the Olentangy Trail after crossing the bridge on the bike path along Dublin-Granville Road. There is a sign here but not very helpful.

OLENTANGy TRAIL TO US 40 / BROAD STREET (APPROx 11 MILES)The Olentangy Trail travels south along a chain-link fence with Route 315 on your right. (NOTE: there are other bike trails that go north on both sides of the river and there are “gopher holes” that take you under the inter-section of 315 and Dublin-Granville Road. Be very careful here as cyclists and motorists are everywhere).

Ignore the “gopher holes” that go downhill and under the intersection of Route 315 and Dublin-Granville Road. This photo is looking north approaching Dublin-Granville Road.

Continue south on the Olentangy Trail along the chain-link fence that parallels Route 315.

Columbus north To South page 4

The Olentangy Trail is a nice ride and is marked with a center line. There are many side spur bicycle path connectors and the center line can help to keep you on the main trail.

Soon the trail leaves the roadside and ducks into the woods. There are many side spurs and connectors along the way but you can follow the yellow lines that are painted down the center of the main path. There is a drink-ing fountain in Antrim Park.

The trail comes up to the road to cross the river at W Henderson Road. This is typical for the Olentangy Trail. Several times the trail comes up to the road only to cross a bridge and then heads off into the treeline on the other side.

There is short section of the trail that goes on the road through a neighborhood in Clin-tonville. It is a nice area with beautiful homes and gardens. The route is well signed, easy to navigate, and is approximately 1 mile. (the trail dead ends onto Northmoor - turn right on Olentangy Blvd which turns into W Kenworth - turn right on Milton - turn right on Delhi - turn left on Riverside Drive and the route becomes trail again at the intersection of Riverside and W Como Avenue.)

No worries as the trail goes on the road in Clintonville. It is well signed as it continues south through the neighborhood. Your only worry will be trying to figure out why you don’t live here, right on the trail!

In 2012 there was a marked detour from W Dodrige Street to Lane Avenue. The detour has ended and the trail now goes through along the river.

If you are interested in exploring the Ohio State university campus exit the trail at Lane Avenue where there is a suspension bridge.

The next section was closed for construction earlier in the year and was detoured by send-ing cyclists up into the city streets and side-walks away from the river just below The Shoe [football stadium]. We saw one detour sign that they forgot to take down. The correct route is to stay along the river.

You will cross the river again and go under 315 at West Third Avenue and there are go-pher holes under the bridge to access the trail from either side of the road. Continue south with the river on your left.

The trail comes up to the road to cross the river and go under Route 315 at West Third Avenue. This is typical for the Olentangy Trail. When you see a replica of the ship Santa Maria at the elaborately carved bridge you have ar-rived at uS 40 / Broad Street. Exit the trail and turn right to follow uS 40 / Broad Street west to proceed south to Cincinnati.

The replica of the ship Santa Maria is your landmark for the spot where you exit the Scioto River Trail and turn right to cross the river and continue on uS 40 / Broad Street. The bridge in the background of this photo is uS 40 / Broad Street.

There is not much to say about uS 40 / Broad Street. It is big, mean, urban and not very bicycle friendly. The Ohio to Erie Trail is over 300 miles of fantastically beautiful scenery and easy-going routes with a few rough spots. uS 40 / Broad Street is one of the not so pretty places. However it is only 8 miles so hammer down and get it over with. use caution at the highway crossings. When you get to Galloway Road turn left to make your way to the trail-head at The Battelle Darby Creek Metropark.

Intersection of uS 40 / Broad Street and Galloway Road is where you turn left to make your way to the trailhead at The Battelle Darby Creek Metropark.

soutH to NortHuS 40 / Broad Street to Dublin-Granville Road via The Scioto River Trail and The Olentangy Trail (approx 11 miles)

Traveling east on uS 40 / Broad Street you will come into downtown Columbus and will need to pick up the Scioto River Trail north. Look for a giant museum called COSI on your right and a replica of the Santa Maria down below the bridge on your left. This is where you turn left to head north on the Scioto River Trail immediately after crossing the river at the north west corner of Broad Street and Marconi Blvd. The trail begins in a park just above the ship and heads north with the river on your left.

There is a sign at the intersection of the Scio-to River Trail and The Olentangy Trail at Dublin Road / W Spring Street. This is where you turn right to leave the Scioto River Trail and con-tinue north on The Olentangy Trail. (NOTE to through cyclists from far away: OSu is Ohio State university, Whetstone is a local park and Worthington is a suburb to the north where you will turn to follow Dublin-Granville Road.)

The Olentangy Trail is fairly well signed and has a yellow dashed line down the center that will help to keep you on course as there are many side spurs and connectors that do not have the painted dash lines.

“Gopher holes” go under the bridge to access the trail from either West Third Avenue. Continue north with the river on your left.

As the trail continues north it utilizes the road for a short distance through the Clin-tonville neighborhood. (It is a nice area with beautiful homes and gardens.) It is well signed, easy to navigate and approximately 1 mile. (At the intersection of Riverside and W Como Avenue the trail dead ends and follows Riverside Drive – turn right on Delhi – turn left on Milton – turn left on W Kenworth which turns into Olentangy Blvd – turn left on North-moor and the route becomes trail again as Northmoor dead ends into Northmoor Park)

The trail is well signed through Clintonville. Your only worry will be trying to figure out why you don’t live here, right on the trail!

Just after passing through the Park of Roses and Whetstone Park the trail follows the road to cross the river at W Henderson Road and continues north with the river on your right. There is hairpin blind turn and a fish-eye mir-ror mounted on a tree to aid your view. use caution here.

There is a drinking fountain along the trail in Antrim Park. The trail exits the woods and travels alongside a chain-link fence that paral-lels Route 315.

When the trail arrives at the intersection of Dublin-Granville Road turn right and cross the river using the Dublin-Granville Road bridge and proceed on the trail that parallels Dublin-Granville Road.

In a now familiar fashion the Olentangy Trail exits the treeline to follow the roadside trail to cross the bridge over the Olentangy River and continue north. In this photo Carol is facing south. The arrows point north.

Follow Proprietors Road until it dead ends at Schrock Road where you turn right and cross the railroad tracks. Follow Schrock Road past the Budweiser plant. You will go over Inter-state 71 and over Interstate 270.

You are now approaching the place to choose to use the bike trail that goes through Alum Creek Park or the bike trail that goes through Westerville. We rode both and they are equal in distance and both are pleasant.

There is access to the Alum Creek Trail from both sides of Schrock Road at the bridge that crosses Alum Creek. The Westerville Bike Trail terminus is just ahead, uphill at the intersection of Charring Cross and Schrock Road.

ALUM CREEK TRAIL

To use the Alum Creek Trail you will access the trail at the Schrock Road bridge that crosses Alum Creek. Just past the bridge turn right onto the trail and use caution as it makes a right hand hairpin turn to go under the bridge and continue north.

You will wind through the woods past a lake and along a pasture and will come to a bridge where the trail continues forward to Main Street or turns right to go under the bridge.

Go forward to Main Street and turn left on the trail, facing traffic and go down to the crosswalk to cross Main Street in front of the Westerville Senior Center. Follow the trail past a 911 Monument and in front of the Wester-ville fire department.

Just beyond the Westerville fire department the bike trail picks up again and the trail is separated from vehicles by bricks as you enter Heritage Park.

WESTERVILLE BIKE TRAIL

After picking up the bike trail connector from Charring Cross Road the trail appears to end. It is difficult to see that trail continues on the opposite side of S State Street.

Continue on Schrock Road and cross over Alum Creek and the Alum Creek bike trail and proceed uphill a short distance to the traffic light and turn left onto Charred Cross Road. (the other side of Schrock Road Charring Cross Road is called Brooksedge Blvd.)

Head down Charring Cross Road a few hundred feet and look for the bike trail on your right. This is a short connector that will take you up to S State Street where the trail turns left onto the sidewalk and appears to end. Follow the sidewalk down to the traf-fic light and use the crosswalk to pick up the trail on the other side of State Street. There is a dedication marker for the Ohio to Erie Trail which is a brass plaque mounted on a knee high boulder. There are benches and shrubs and the trail heads into the treeline behind a Speedway gas station.

The trail continues north through the neigh-borhood and there are many road crossings–we counted seven. Many of them are small residential streets but all require a full stop as traffic is heavy in this suburban retail area. The trail continues and runs behind condos, retail complexes, past a ball field and will arrive at Maxtown Road which is also known as Polaris Parkway. To continue north cross Maxtown Road near the entrance of Home Depot. This

is the spot were the Westerville Bike Path and The Alum Creek connector bike trail meet.

There is an Ohio to Erie Trail sign on a green metal post. After crossing Maxtown Road turn right on the path, facing traffic, for 200 feet and follow the trail when it turns left to go behind Home Depot. You will pass behind the Trek store and they provide free air and water to cyclist at their back door. The southern end of The Ohio to Erie Trail follows The Little Miami Scenic Trail which is signed as bicycle routes 1 and 3. The southern terminus of the Little Miami Trail Scenic Trail is marked as Newtown, though the trail ends at The Little Miami Golf Center parking lot. (oper-ated by Hamilton County Park District, parking fee).

About 1 mile north of the Golf Center is the Avoca Park Trailhead which is great place to rest before continuing into the city. There is a pavilion, water, restrooms and access to the Little Miami River.

Cincinnati, page 1

When you make the hairpin turn the very short connector is steep and takes you up to the intersection of Newtown Road and Wooster Pike, RT 50.

Follow the green oval bike route 1 signs. Wooster Pike is heavy with traffic and is four lanes wide. use the crosswalk and proceed west on Wooster Park for about a half mile, to the bottom of the hill. Here we recom-mend using the crosswalk again and use the sidewalk on the south side of Wooster Pike (in front of Kroger), facing traffic, to get up the hill. (There is no sidewalk on the north side.) Of course you could stay in the street but the hill is significant and with the heavy traffic we recommend using the sidewalk.

At the top of the hill the sidewalk diminishes so again use the crosswalk and get back on Wooster Pike to continue west. You will be go-ing through Mariemont. The road is divided,

boulevard style, with trees in the middle. On the other side of Mariemont (about 1 mile) look for the Frisch’s Mainliner Restaurant on your right and use the crosswalk to cross the road at the far end of the Frisch’s parking lot. You will be following Wooster as it turns left, (south). The big road, RT 50, continues west and becomes Columbia Parkway which is closed to bicycles. You will see green oval bike route 1 signs marking the left turn.

In about 1/4 mile there is a bridge that takes you over the railroad tracks. There is a giant bump where the bridge turns back to road, use caution. I nearly crashed here.

Next you will turn right to use Beechmont Circle to get around Beechmont Avenue. It looks like the bike route 1 signs point you down a short “do not enter” street which we did not use. Instead we proceeded 50 feet to use the main intersection. After the right turn

To get to downtown Cincinnati follow the bike route 1 signs into the city with the Ohio River on your left. It is that “easy” but here are more details.

From the Avoca Park Trailhead continue on the bike trail as it winds through the woods. You need to exit the trail at a hairpin right turn before the trail takes you under a bridge that is Newtown Road. (the trail continues another 1/2 mile to the Golf Center).

Little Miami Trail Scenic Trail is trail number 3 and The Ohio To Erie Trail is number 1.

Once you exit the Little Miami Trail Scenic Trail you will follow the signs for 1, The Ohio To Erie Trail.

At the Lunken Airport terminal use the crosswalk to cross Wilmer.

the road is narrow and you need to take the lane to get through some tight turns and on the other side you be on Wilmer Avenue. You can stay in the road or use a section of the Lunken Airport bike trail that follows Wilmer Avenue on the east side of the street, facing traffic. The bike trail is bumpy and crosses many driveways with a bump up and down each time. Traffic is heavy here but it is a well known and well used bicycle route. The Lunken Airport bike trail is a loop and you will be using the western side of the loop only, do not follow the trail as it turns left.

When you arrive at the Lunken Airport terminal use the crosswalk to cross Wilmer. This bike trail takes you to Carrel Street where you turn left and in one block cross Kellogg Avenue and continue on the bike path facing traffic on Kellogg.

Riverside Drive will take you into downtown Cincinnati and becomes Pete Rose Way after going under the yellow arched I-471 bridge. To tire dip turn left on Mehring Way to the public landing.

There is also a bike path that will take you downtown Cincinnati. The trail access point is just beyond the spot were Riverside Drive goes under a railroad bridge putting the railroad tracks on the south side of Riverside Drive. There is a park entrance for service vehicles that crosses the tracks where you can get the trail or continue on another 1/4 mile

You will know you are at Berry International Friendship Park when you see dozens of flags.

Carol and Guy “tire dipping” in the Ohio River at the public landing at the west end of Yeatmans Cove Park and The Surpentine Wall on their 2013 Ohio To Erie Tour.

on Riverside Drive and turn left into the Berry International Friendship Park entrance.

Turn right to follow the bike trail west with the Ohio River on your left. Eventually you will end up in Yeatman’s Cove Park and when the park ends at a parking lot adjacent to the Ohio River you are at a public landing where you can tire dip. Be careful it is slippery.

At the intersection of Kellogg and Congress there is giant school that is unique as the entire complex is up on pylons, 20 feet above the ground. Here it is rider’s choice to follow the bike trail as it goes behind the school to the left or hop out onto Kellogg Avenue, which becomes Riverside Drive. The bike trail goes along the river through a couple of parks and eventually dumps you back onto River-side Drive in about 1 mile or so. When we rode this route we saw dozens of cyclists and they all used the road.

At the intersection of Kellogg and Congress the bike signs point you behind the school that is up on pylons. You could also use Riverside Drive.

John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge.

Whichever way you choose to go— Riv-erside Drive and Pete Rose Way or the bike trail you will end up under the Coliseum just south of downtown on Mehring Way. To get to downtown continue west on Mehring Way to Main Street. Turn right and you will go through the newly developed “Banks” enter-tainment area.

The Moerlein Lager House is at Mehring Way and Main and is a great place to celebrate. There are stairs with a bike gutter to get up to the Brewery on the west side of the building.

The heart of the city is Fountain Square which is at 5th and Vine. From Main Street turn left on 4th and right on Vine. All the streets in downtown Cincinnati are one-way so you will be going around the block if you miss a turn. Enjoy the Queen City! Don’t miss Cincinnati Chili at Gold Star (Covington), or Skyline (downtown).

There is a pedestrian and bicycle only bridge, known as The Purple People Bridge, that will take you across the Ohio River to Newport, Kentucky. Covington is west of New-port. Both cities have many restaurants and hotels.

Access the bridge from Pete Rose Way. The bridge is actually purple and is west of the yel-low arch I-471 bridge.

Also worth noting is the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge which was opened in 1866. It has a grated deck so its not recommended for cycling but take a few pictures. When we were in Cincinnati in June 2013 they were still working on an extension of the Ohio River Trail along Mehring Way that will go under the suspension bridge and continue west.

The Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath is a mixed surface trail with some paved sections and many boardwalks and bridges but it is predominantly crushed limestone.

The Sippo Valley Trail is paved at either end and fades to crushed limestone then to two track near the center. There is one section that has large ballast-size gravel that is very uncomfortable but it is short—just over a mile in length.

The Holmes County Trail is a shared by bicycles, horses and buggies. Note: your cell phone might not work in Amish Country.

The road route between Dalton and Fredericksburg is rolling hills. All of it is profoundly scenic and rural.

Generally on CR 6 and CR 25 you can get enough momentum on the downs to have enough steam for the ups. I walked this one in 2012. Pushing a loaded touring bike is no bargain! I rode up it in 2013.

The Bridge of Dreams crosses the Mohican River and is close to RT 62. Even if you choose to use RT 62 instead of The Mohican Valley Trail you can easily check out the bridge.

The Mohican Valley Trail is not paved. There are bumps and deep buggy ruts under the loose baby powder-like dirt trail. RT 62 is the alternative.

Route 62 is 55 MPH and has big trucks. There are two hills going south and one big hill going north. In this photo Carol is pedaling north. Be wary of buggy ruts.

London is home to the Friends of Madison County Parks and Trails. There are kiosks with local information on both sides of London and a pavilion with restrooms on the south side of London. The shade shelter is west of Lilly Chapel on The Camp Chase Trail. If you are lucky, like we were, you might bump into Wayne Roberts and Gene Pass. The Ohio To Erie Trail, bike route 1 signs are along the Prairie Grass Trail.

The signs in and around Xenia Station use the name of the next town, not trail names. Some have trail numbers. From Xenia: Ohio To Erie Trail, 1, north to Cedarville, south to to Spring Valley.

The Little Miami Scenic Trail has been around, in part, since the 1980s and sections are also known as the Loveland Bike Trail. It is paved and heavily used. There are posted 20 MPH speed limit signs to keep the racers in check. Loveland is a great place to stop. The trail rolls right past all the restaurants and a park. Delays are a possibility as overhead construction on the I-71 Jeremiah Morrow Bridge continues, just north of Morrow.

This trail guide is the result of a true labor of love. Countless hours of research, writing and mapping have gone into its making. In addi-tion to all of the desk work, we rode the trail multiple times, in part and in whole, accumu-lating thousands of miles, all the while taking copious notes and photos. We loved every mile of it and we hope it shows. We designed this guide to be simple, light-weight and quick to navigate. We used the PDF file format because it is so versatile and ubiquitous and easy to update. A PDF reader is required.

This trail guide and associated maps and charts are the result of our own work and riding. Your mileage may vary (quite literally!). We have made every effort to keep things as up-to-date as possible, but things can and do change rapidly along the trail. There is no sub-stitute for your own common sense and your own sense of adventure.

How To Use This guide:The first page of the guide is the Home page. On it you will see an overall map of the trail through the state of Ohio. On the left is a handy mileage chart that gives the rough mileage between major towns and cities along the trail. It reads North to South starting at the top and South to North, starting at the bottom. On the right hand side of the page there is a trail mileage chart that gives the rough lengths of each section of trail and road routes and is read in the same manner as the other mileage chart.

The map of Ohio shows the route as it winds through the state, going through various towns and cities. You can click on the name of each town or city and that will bring you to a city highlight page. This is where you can find a more detailed map of how the trail is routed through the many towns along the way. Parts that are off-road are in green. Sections of trail that travel on the road are in black.

Some of these pages have photos that are clickable, indicated by a plus sign. There are also some small detail maps on these pages designed to get you through the more intri-cate passages of the trail. These small maps are also clickable, bringing you to a larger view. At any time, you can click on the HOME button in the lower right of any page to bring you back to the home page map of the state of Ohio. The BACK buttons are designed to bring you back up a level in the particular town highlight map that you are currently

perusing. The back button does not appear at the top level of a town highlight page. The intent is at that point to go back to the HOME page.

At the left of each town highlight page you will find a convenient list of local amenities. These can include lodging and dining, bicycle shops, must-see attractions and more. When you click on these lists, you will be taken to an index of these places that can include address-es, phone numbers, email addresses or web-sites. The places listed in red are places that we have been to or patronized and that we liked. These lists are in no way complete and may even vary in accuracy from time to time. Some establishments have seasonal hours.
