Monday, May 11We depart Portland on a transatlantic flight to Rome, Italy.

Tuesday, May 12: RomeRome was founded nearly 3,000 years ago, and today is an irresistible combination of sights, sounds, monuments and churches. After landing, we meet our Tour Director and transfer directly to our hotel for a three-night stay. (Dinner)

Wednesday, May 13: RomeWe start our day in the smallest country in the world, the Vatican City State, to enjoy the experience of a Papal Audience, Pope Francis’ schedule permitting. At the audience the Holy Father will bless any religious articles that you bring. In the afternoon, we walk across the historic center of Rome, seeing the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon and Piazza Navona. (Breakfast and Dinner)

Thursday, May 14: RomeWe return to Vatican City this morning, where in the Vatican Museums we see part of the collection of art and antiquities built up by the popes over the centuries. The acknowledged masterpiece is the Sistine Chapel, still in use for papal elections, where Michelangelo worked for ten years painting the walls and ceiling. Next door we tour St. Peter’s, largest Christian church in the world, built above the spot where St. Peter was buried over 1,900 years ago. Spend a free afternoon and evening exploring the city or relaxing. (Breakfast)

Friday, May 15: FlorenceThis morning we drive north from Rome to Assisi, home of St. Francis and St. Claire. Built on the slopes of Mount Subasio from local pink stone, Assisi has changed little since the time of St. Francis and St. Claire. We see the Basilica di San Francesco, where Giotto’s frescos of St. Francis’ life, painted between 1296-1304, lead us through a picture book of the saint’s life. We also visit the Basilica of St. Claire, which contains her shrine, and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, known as the “Birthplace of the Franciscan Order.” We continue into the Tuscany region to the city of Florence for a two-night stay. (Breakfast and Dinner)

Saturday, May 16: FlorenceCradle of the Italian Renaissance, Florence is a living museum, inspiring some of the most famous names in art. On a guided tour of the city we will visit the Accademia museum to see the statue of David by Michelangelo, perhaps the most famous sculpture in the world. We will also see the cathedral, Santa Maria del Fiore, built from pink, green and white marble in the 13th and 14th centuries, Piazza Signoria, and the Ponte Vecchio, oldest bridge over the river Arno. Florence has long been associated with leather goods, and we visit the Santa Croce neighborhood, where many leather showrooms and factories are located. (Breakfast and Dinner)

Sunday, May 17: VeniceWe cross the Appenine mountains and the Po river plain before arriving in Padua, home of Italy’s second oldest university and longtime home of St. Anthony. We visit the Basilica of St. Anthony, built a few years after his death in 1231, and see his tomb and the relics of his tongue, jaw bone and larynx. We then continue a short distance to Venice. (Breakfast and Dinner)

Monday, May 18: VeniceVenice is built on hundreds of small islands in the Venetian lagoon. We visit the Doge’s Palace, headquarters of the Venetian Republic for 1,000 years, and now an impressive museum. We see St. Mark’s Basilica, built to house the shrine of the Evangelist, whose remains were brought to Venice from Alexandria in 822, and St. Mark’s Square. Later, we visit a traditional glass-blowing factory and enjoy an optional gondola ride. (Breakfast and Dinner)Trevi Fountain – Rome
