Why is Terminology important for the EP?
• Since the Lisbon Treaty entered into force the EP adopts the final legislative texts that have been previously translated into the 23 official languages of the EU
• Each translation is legally binding and is transposed into national law
• Inaccurate wording and wrong terminology can transfer legislative powers to the … Court of Justice!

• There is a network of 106 terminologists
• General terminology work in IATE, checking terminology registered via the macro, training of translators, supporting trainees in their terminology projects, coordination of terminology projects in their language, involving trainees

The Terminology Coordination Unit of the EP was created only in 2008. It began its work as a three-member service and was converted into a unit with 10 permanent officials and 6-10 trainees in 2011 facing three main communication challenges:
• to persuade translators and authors that terminology is a key quality factor
• to improve and modernise the structures of communication and cooperation between the institutions that manage the IATE database
• to integrate its actions into the modern global evolution of terminology as a science that touches all areas of production, communication and technology
