I have first to congratulate Arnold Schwarzenegger for starring in a limited acting role in James Cameron’s Terminator (1984) over thirty one years ago and turning it into one of the greatest and most successful robot vs. man film and TV action/sci-fi franchises of all time. Now that is out of the way I have to say that Terminator Genisys, directed by McG, is the fifth film and the farthest removed story-wise and substance-wise from the original Terminator concept. First, the whole purpose of these Terminator films is that the military or Cyberdyne Systems acting as government contractor for the military creates Skynet, an artificial intelligence (AI) type program designed to give superior tactical defense strategies and options. And at some point Skynet becomes self-aware once it is fully activated and decides for its own best interest to then go rogue and launch all our nuclear missiles to destroy humanity. And I seriously doubt it has ever been fully explained if Skynet only launched America’s nukes, which then caused all other super powers to fire their nukes as a counter measure. What is new in Terminator Genisys is that Skynet gets to speak real dialogue as a sentient AI being in more than any other previous Terminator film or the short Fox series “Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles.” We still do not have any rational or even irrational reason why Skynet wanted to kill all humans in the first place. It is just a given in every previous Terminator film and limited TV series that Skynet sees an opportunity in 1997 to kill us all with nukes and start building T-800 and T-100 Terminator robots to finish the job in the future or the past.

I have first to congratulate Arnold Schwarzenegger for starring in a limited

story-wise and substance-wise from the original Terminator concept. First, the

whole purpose of these Terminator films is that the military or Cyberdyne

Systems acting as government contractor for the military creates Skynet, an

artificial intelligence (AI) type program designed to give superior tactical defense

strategies and options. And at some point Skynet becomes self-aware once it is

fully activated and decides for its own best interest to then go rogue and launch

all our nuclear missiles to destroy humanity. And I seriously doubt it has ever

been fully explained if Skynet only launched Americas nukes, which then caused all other super powers to fire their nukes as a counter measure. What is new in

Terminator Genisys is that Skynet gets to speak real dialogue as a sentient AI

being in more than any other previous Terminator film or the short Fox series

Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles. We still do not have any rational or even irrational reason why Skynet wanted to kill all humans in the first place.

It is just a given in every previous Terminator film and limited TV series that

Skynet sees an opportunity in 1997 to kill us all with nukes and start building

T-800 and T-100 Terminator robots to finish the job in the future or the past.

But this time in Terminator Genisys the audience have to figure out multiple

alternate realities where someone or something unnamed in a future Skynet

reality mysteriously sent a friendly Arnold model T-800 to protect Sarah Conner

as a young girl in the 1970s. That newly saved young Sarah Conner grows up with Guardian aka Pops (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and becomes the bad ass

military and hardened Sarah Conner (Emilia Clarke). And this Sarah is much

like the one played with grit and emotion by Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2:

Judgement Day (1991). I was very impressed with Emilias ability to stretch her acting chops and show that she can be way more than the sexy and pouty

Daenerys Targaryen The Mother of Dragons in HBOs Game of Thrones.

And I thought it was kinda fun to have a grizzled and veteran Arnold fighting a

younger T-800 Arnold that he played in 1984. And to make matters more

confusing McG decided to include Cop (Byung-hun Lee), who is a T-1000 liquid

metal like the Terminators from Judgement Day and Terminator 3: Rise of the

Machines (2001), to attack Kyle Reese. So by the end of the first act of Terminator

Genisys McG has tried to jam all the first three Terminator films into this one

before spinning off into a new alternative reality in 2017. And we must assume

that another alternative future Skynet sent the T-1000 Cop to go after Reese

instead of Sarah Conner. Does Skynet now want to kill Reese from the future

because Skynet knows he is the father of John Conner? Audiences are left on

their own to make wild guesses and speculation about why the Cop/T-1000 is not

programmed in 1984 to be obsessed first with finding and killing Sarah Conner.

Now what I dont get or appreciate about Terminator Genisys is that by 2017 we have totally abandoned the only plausible aspect about Skynet being created by

the U.S. military and swapped it out for it being a commercial PC or mobile

operating system like Apples iOS or Android. So even if this is now a secret plot to deploy Skynet on billions of smartphones, desktops and laptops as a new

consumer tech product--than how does that mean Skynet would be used by the

military to run their sophisticated defense systems? In fact, there is no references

in the film to Cyberdyne Systems being a defense contractor at all. We instead

get a super powered John Conner/Terminator (Jason Clarke) that is more

machine than man. John is now Skynets daddy and sole launch protector. And unless by 2017 Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter, Oracle and Apple were all

bought be Cyberdyne Systems than how could or why would Genysis be the

worlds most dominant operating platform that can then take over the world? If McG had said that Genysis/Skynet was the worlds first official autonomous and independent thinking AI, like in Her, than I could see why everyone would want

to have it run on top of or replace their existing commercial operating platforms.

There are so many unanswered questions to Terminator Genisys that it really

only makes sense if there are multi-universes that have the multiple Skynets

trying to figure out what is the best way to wipe out humanity before John

Conner leads the humans to wipe it out. Other than that it makes no sense why

our CIA, DOD or our DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) or

the Russia, UK, Europe, India and China equivalents would allow an advanced

software company owned by an African-American father Miles Dyson (Courtney

    B. Vance) and his engineer son Danny Dyson (Dayo Okenyi) freely develop liquid

metal robots or a quantum particle powered time traveling chamber. Both

Dysons cannot be that dumb to suddenly meet a mysterious John Conner three

years ago who has no past life in tech, but suddenly knows advanced coding,

robotics and quantum physics far beyond any known currently by man or super

computers. These Black Dysons would normally get super suspicious if not

paranoid that John was an alien, and android or an engineer from the future.

And when the lack of diversity in hiring minorities in tech and funding minority

tech startups are burning issues in Silicon Valley. It is highly condescending for

McG to have Terminator Genisys have a white John Conner inexplicably let the

African-American Dysons take all the credit for creating and launching Genisys,

which just so happens to be mans greatest technological achievement. At least have the Dysons type some code into a computer or review some Genisys code on

laptop. Or maybe the Dysons even distrust Conner and Genisyss true purpose.

We have regrettably gone 100 degrees backward from Joe Mortons smart, heroic and highly believable computer engineer Miles Dyson in Terminator 2:

Judgment Day. Joe Mortons credible Miles Dyson was the one who found the Terminators severed hand in 1984 and then over the years helps reverse engineer the hands futuristic technology to drastically helps Cyberdyne Systems become a world leader in computers and robotics. Instead Terminator Genisys

just gave us some boring, detached and well-dressed brothers that no one truly

believes are the Black versions of Tim Cook, Mark Zuckerberg or Elon Musk. I

would rather blindly believe that Tej (Ludacris) and the smoking hot looking

Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) are more credible master tech geniuses than the

father son Black Dysons who are supposedly running the powerful Cyberdyne

Systems. Miles Dyson was too important a minority character to treat as a joke.

Well, all I can say is that I am sure we will keep seeing more Terminator films in

the near future. But until then I give Terminator Genisys $$$ primarily because I

want to see more of Emilia, Jai and Arnold who is definitely back in a big way as

an upgraded Terminator T-100 and more realistic Skynet military based origin.
