ArtArt(ful) Futures workshop.

Miss Norris and Miss Miller accompanied 10 students to Lake Macquarie Gallery for an Art Therapy day this term. Students viewed an exhibition of works, they discussed how art is a therapy tool and can help in many situations. Students were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones and ‘Make their mark’ and create works using ink on paper and blind continuous drawing techniques. We all enjoyed the day out making and viewing beautiful art works.

Sculpture by the Bay

WCS was one of six Central Coast High schools that participated in the Sculpture by the Bay program facilitated by Local Sculptural Artist Col Henry. Yr10 Visual Arts students engaged in workshops, artist talks and gallery visits over Term 3. They had to create a piece that would be exhibited on the grounds of the Gosford Regional Galley Oct 20th – Nov 13th. Our students created a piece titled the Material Bower – based around the worlds thirst and desire for material things. Gallery visitors across the Central Coast gave great feed back to our creative students.

Art and About

WCS Art and Photography students have been quite social this term, attending many wonderful excursions organised by dedicated staff. We set off to Bondi for Sculpture by the Sea, just our luck it was one of the hottest days of the term, Students walked the trail, took photos and engaged in discussion about the large-scale sculptures that adorned the coast line. We also set off to Newcastle to view Loving Vincent at the Tower Cinemas, an amazing movie that saw every frame totally around 65 000 oil paintings hand painted by 125 professional artists.

EnglishWhistle! Clap! Cheer! Sizzle!

Whizz! Bang! Let’s celebrate the success of another productive and engaging year in English.

As always, Term Four has been jam packed with an array of exciting classroom activities. The lead up to our Christmas break has been accompanied by some of the best student work. Here is what the students have been learning and exploring this term:

Year 7 English – Our splendid Year Sevens spent the first half of the term engaging in the wonder of Mrs Stone and Mrs Louie’s favourite film study of all, Beauty and the Beast. The students loved discussing, sharing ideas and writing analytical responses. In particular, the students considered the way the director utilised techniques to make the film more appealing to audiences today. Towards the latter part of the term, the great work continued as we dove into the life and times of Shakespeare in all its guts and glory. The students loved discovering all the gory details of the plague!

Year 8 English – Our enthusiastic Year Eights have been busily learning about genre this term. They have viewed and analysed various film openings to ascertain how the conventions of that particular genre have been utilised by a director. The students have been eager to share their ideas on the success/

or challenges of the directors in representing the genre. We may just have some budding film critics among us.

Year 9 English – Our awesome Year Nine students have been delving into the wonder and excitement that comes with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The students have been busily researching, questioning, commenting and writing about the ideas behind the story and its relevance to our lives today. Our classes have been filled with enthusiastic debates about why Romeo and Juliet made the choices that led to their demise and how that could have been prevented. Needless to say, Year Nine have loved Baz Luhrmann’s version…and so the magic of the ‘Bard’ lives on for another generation.

Year 10 English – The first part of the term saw our terrific Year Ten students working hard to consolidate all of the knowledge they had learnt this year for their Yearly Examinations. The students spent the latter part of the term focusing on the concept of ‘Truth’ as an Area of Study. There have been many innovative activities, debates and discussions on what constitutes ‘truth’ and what happens when there are multiple versions of the truth. The students have viewed this through the lens of documentary study and the choices made to represent ideas about truth.

Senior English – This term has been a time of excitement for our Year Eleven students as they officially started Year Twelve work in preparation for the 2018 HSC. Advanced and Standard have been working fastidiously towards their first assessment task on the Area of Study ‘Discovery’. Pleasingly, their teachers have commented on the organised and diligent approach many students have taken this term. English Studies have been engaged in their work on ‘The Big Screen’. This study has enabled them to create a pitch for a documentary on an issue/topic of their own choice, storyboarding their ideas and researching. The students are in the process of preparing to deliver their documentary pitches and we can’t wait to see what they have come up with.

On a final note, we celebrate the success and dedication of our English teachers. They have demonstrated time and time again that they are committed to enhancing the learning of our students and we thank them for their invaluable work.

We wish every student and their family a safe and happy Christmas break. We look forward to another fantastic year in 2018.

HSIESuccessful fieldwork at Bobbin Head (overnight camp for Year 10), Wadalba Wildlife Corridor (year 8 students), Lakes Beach (year 10 students, Porters Creek Wetland Year11 and year 12, Wattanobbi Knoll and Fishburn Drain (year 12).

Students had the chance to have hands on experience conducting soil sampling and PH testing, water testing for salinity, turbidity and oxygen levels, constructing transects to show vegetation types and suitability, and suggesting reasons and making movies to demonstrate the effects of biophysical interactions.

Next year we look forward to introducing the new Geography syllabus in years 8 and 10 and reviewing the new History syllabus (7-10) and new Geography (7 and 9).

A great deal of work has gone into implementing the new syllabus in stage 4 and 5. Next year we will also be implementing new syllabus in stage 6, in both Modern and Ancient History.

A number of teachers have implemented many AVID strategies into their teaching, encouraging students to take back responsibility for their own learning and to develop improved interpersonal relationships with their peers and teachers. This has produced many positive outcomes for those students and teachers who are willing to engage with this process.

We have doubled the numbers of students travelling with us to Vietnam in 2018 – 34 have committed to this amazing journey that will “open their eyes and change their lives”.

In the ROSA course for year 10, congratulations go to Anna Jones for placing 1st in both History and Geography. A well-deserved reward for a hardworking and committed student. Congratulations to all the students from year 7-12 who lifted their grades to the next level. There have been many mostly due to the students’ decisions to focus and own their learning. Well done, you will know who you are.

Congratulations to the 7 year 9 and 7 year 10 students who participated in the Illuminate –nextGen challenge. These students committed to a week at the Ourimbah campus and had the benefit of working on a number of challenges to produce a proposal for improving health on the Central Coast.

I want to thank parents for their ongoing support of both the children in their care and the staff at Wadalba. A combined desire to see the best outcomes for students comes from this partnership.

Measuring Physical Space

Year 7 have had another busy term in Measuring Physical Space studying the units of Living Things in Science, Survivor and Summer Sports in PD/H/PE and Measurement of time, length, perimeter and circumference in Mathematics.

In Science, students have spent time learning the characteristics of all livings things and how we classify these organisms into groups, as well as spending time looking at the building blocks of all living things in the lab. This included discovering some single celled organisms in local pond water under the microscope.

In Mathematics, we have taken the time to see the practical and everyday implications of how we measure time, perimeter, length and circumference. Students have applied these mathematical principles into their everyday life throughout lessons this term.

And finally, in PDHPE we have been enjoying the sunshine and engaging in all types of Summer Sports during PE lessons. These have included; cricket, tennis, volleyball, basketball and touch football. In Health lessons, students have been learning how they can best equip themselves to be safe during outdoor recreation and activities which they might enjoy during their summer break including bike and road safety, beach safety and basic first aid principles.

Middle SchoolWith Year 7 receiving their yearly reports during their Term 4 Positive Year Assembly in Week 9, this year Measuring Physical Space teachers would like to take the time to congratulate those students who have excelled in our three subjects this year:

Humanities

In Humanities this term the focus areas were Egypt and Shakespeare.

In History students investigated the the features of the ancient Egyptian society and how this influenced the civilisation that developed there. They learnt about everyday life, the roles of key groups and people in ancient Egypt as well as the influence of law and religion. As an additional activity for students who finished their work efficiently, there was the option of making a miniature pyramid or sarcophagus.

In English students studies two texts; a play The Lost Scroll and a short story Mummies in the Morning and looked at the life and times of William Shakespeare.

As part of the Shakespeare unit we studied one of his poems, Sonnet 18. Not only did we analyse the poem but we sang it with Paul Kelly. We also built a model of the Globe Theatre.

Here is a report by Tayla Bott in 7E on The Lost Scroll.

In class we did a performance of a play called The Lost Scroll. The play was about the Character Professor Pyramid undertaking an investigation to find out who was Egypt’s first ever mummy. The story of the play follows an ancient Egyptian legend about the Gods Osiris, Seth, Isis, Nepthys and Horus to explain how and why Egypt’s first mummy existed.

There were quite a few characters so most of the class got a part. I played the part of Professor Pyramid, the narrator. Ebbony played the part of the Egyptian God Osiris who was the first mummy. She really enjoyed being wrapped up in toilet paper. It was great fun because we got to dress up as the characters and use props.

Humanities teachers would like to congratulate the following students who, through hard work and consistent effort, placed first, second and third in their class this year. Our congratulations go to:

Support Unit

The conclusion of this term will herald the departure of seven of the Support Units Year 12 students. These students are Daniel Murphy, Max Kozak, Bethanie Blackman, Stacey Galvin, Adam Cook, Jorden Smith and Peter Jackson. All these students other than Daniel Murphy commenced their schooling here at Wadalba in Year 7 all those years ago and its with great sadness that we send them on their way to post-school options. All the staff wish them the best of luck in their individual future endeavours.

This term has seen the entire Support Unit undertake its annual swim scheme at the Swim First Aquatic Centre at Berkeley Vale. This was a very successful weekly event and all students grew greatly in confidence and competence in and out of the water.

On Tuesday the 5th of December, the secondary Support Unit students attended the “Fair Go Day” at the Wyong Race course. This event was held in recognition of The International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) and showcased the amazing talent within our community. As part of the celebration our students created a large artwork that was displayed throughout the day drawing much praise from the event goers. As you can see it truly was a masterpiece worthy of all its accolades.

Throughout this term all the students in the Support Unit have worked towards striving their personal best and it is with great pleasure that we celebrate the success of the following students with individual awards.

Creative and Perfoming Arts

In the final week of school, it is fantastic to look back and reflect upon the diverse range of exciting events that have occurred in the Creative & Performing Arts Faculty over the year. The classroom is so important in laying the foundation for successful extra-curricular activities that build and evolve our sense of identity and culture. Every individual student will take away something from one of these experiences knowing that they were part of something exciting: they got to create, make, invent, inspire, aspire, fail then succeed, and ultimately become something more to themselves and the community.

Our Stories

Year 7 students from the ATSI Literacy Support Program have recently engaged in a series of literacy and creative arts workshops. These workshops were led by Aboriginal guests, Brett Parker, Casey Natty, Danny Huges and various WCS staff members. During these workshops they worked to create their own personal artwork, poem and rap verse.

We have gained some valuable feedback from students who participated in the program and here are some of the comments they made:

“As we were completing our artworks, Brett and Casey told us stories about their life and how art can be represented in story. I had a great time learning new things to do with my culture and I really enjoyed being shown how to improve my own art skills”- Lachlan

“I’m really proud of my self-portrait and I really enjoyed the workshop. I loved learning more about my culture, expressing my life into art and hearing Brett and Casey Share their stories with us.” Haylee O’Grady

Congratulations to all our ATSI students that participated in the program.

¡Excelente!

In week 10, many LOTE students will be attending “Coco” the movie at Events Cinema, Tuggerah. It is a Pixar musical fantasy film about the Land of the Dead in Mexico. This will be a lovely way to end learning Spanish and the school year.

In 2018, we’ll be welcoming a new teacher to the LOTE faculty. Mr Forsythe comes with a wealth of experience and will be teaching Japanese to year 7 students. We wish him all the best in his endeavours at Wadalba.

Another change in 2018 is that Mrs Partridge will take over as Head Teacher for LOTE. I’d personally like to thank Mr Hodges for all of the hard work, time and effort that he put into LOTE, both with administration tasks and dealing with student behaviours.

CareersYES TAFE

Forty year 10 students have been participating in the YES (Youth Engagement Strategy) TAFE program this term. The aim of the program was to engage students so that they can embrace learning that lead to future training and work opportunities. A range of vocational programs were offered to students on TAFE campuses across the Central Coast and Hunter regions. Such courses were Animal Care, Automotive, Bricklaying, Café and Cookery, Carpentry, Defence Force Fitness, Film and TV, Group Exercise & Fitness, Hair and Beauty, Plumbing and Youth Work.

These programs incorporated practical vocational tasters and employability skills development. Each participant developed an Individual Learning Plan which focused on future learning, training pathways and employment opportunities. At the end of the course, each student who attended every week received a certificate of participation which listed all of the competencies covered in that unit of work.

Axel King-Saez and Callum Bedford attended the Bricklaying program and hope to pursue this line of work when they finish school.

OURIMBAH CAMPUS – SCHOOLS VISIT DAY

In week 7 this term, a number of year 10 and year 11 students attended the University of Newcastle, Ourimbah Campus, School’s Visit day. Students attended mini lectures, met lecturers and gained information on university courses. The feedback was that the students acquired the necessary information for further study and enjoyed experiencing campus life.

Victoria Beasley was even lucky enough to win a Westfield Giftcard!

Careers

SPEED CAREERING DAY

On Monday November 27, a Speed Career Workshop was held for all Year 9 students and a selected group of students from our support unit.

The Speed Careering concept meant that our students had 90 minutes to move around the gym, spending a brief time with each of the industry representatives. Separate 90 minute sessions were scheduled to allow smaller groups of students to interact with employers in a meaningful way. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and hear about work conditions, required training and more.

The industries represented include a broad cross section of potential employers, group training companies and tertiary education providers. We would like to thank the following people for giving up their valuable time:

Yr 7/ 8 Touch Football State Titles 2017

On Friday 17th November, 2017 I had the pleasure of taking this remarkable group of young men to the NSW Touch State titles at the Kingsway Fields, at Werrington. This is where the 16 winners of regional championships would meet to determine what school would walk away as the State Champions for 2017.

The boys had a very difficult pool and in Game 1 we were drawn to play the Goulburn Champions Young HS. After a slow start the boys found their groove to come out victorious 6-1. In Game 2 we were drawn to play against the very strong Heathcote HS who were the Canterbury Regional Champions. The boys played a lot better in this match demonstrating their attacking arsenal and coming out 6-0 winners.

In Game 3 we came up against the very strong Blacktown Patrician Brothers School who were winners of the Blacktown/ Parramatta Region. This was a hard fought match with the game flowing from end to end. We missed several chances to score several tries and were content with a 1 all drawn. This placed Wadalba on top of Pool A going into the knockout phase of the competition.

In our first finals game we were drawn to play Tweed River HS. After a sluggish start we found our groove and came out of the game 8-2 winners. This result saw us drawn against the very strong St Joseph’s Regional College. The game was an epic battle with some very classy Touch Football being played in attack and defence. The game went try for try and at the end of full time it was all square at 4 tries a piece. This resulted in the game going to a drop off. The drop off was very intense getting down to 3 on 3 with the game hanging in the balance.

Unfortunately due to exhaustion St Joseph’s took the one opportunity to score and eliminated us from the competition. Blacktown Patrician Brothers went on to be the State Champions for 2017, with Wadalba finishing a very respectful 5th in the State. Congratulations boys on your commitment and dedication. You were a fantastic bunch of boys to work with and each of you did Wadalba extremely proud.

Year 12 FarewellAs part of the end of school celebrations for our graduating students a formal dinner is organised. This year the Year 12 formal took place at Kooindah Waters Golf Club at Wyong.

Their celebration was on 16th November and was well attended by most of our outgoing year 12 students. There was much fun and frivolity had by all including a photo booth for the students to have photos taken together; with their peers with their teachers and even the Principal.

It was wonderful to see so many them all dressed up looking ready to take on the world. We wish them all the very best of luck as they go out to take their place in the world.

Year 12 Farewell

Today is a day of celebration, you have done it!

You have completed the HSC course! However; you can’t lose momentum yet because you’ve still got the HSC Examinations to go. Stay with it – you can do it.

There are many teachers who have taught you through the years and assisted you achieve in your HSC. I know you join me in thanking them for all their support and motivation they have provided you over the years. We would also to thank Mr Cooke, Mr Towney, Ms Jones and Mrs Cox (Miss White) and we thank Mrs Burge for all their help and guidance they have given you over your time here.

They say the main point to a speech is to make your audience think, sometimes agree with you sometimes not but hopefully your audience learns something from what you say.

So, Year 12 - this is what I’d like to say to you as you go:

Think about where you’re going and what you’re going to do with the rest your life.

Don’t rest on your laurels strive to be the best version of your self that you can possibly be, you only get one chance at life, so do it right.

Be mindful of other people’s feelings, be caring of yourself and of others. Let your friends and family know you care about them. Don’t be afraid to show your emotions this can make other people’s pain more bearable if they see you feel their pain too.

Don’t be in a hurry to grow up, you’ll move out of your parent’s home eventually (hopefully before you’re 25) or they’ll get sick of you and kick you out.

As you go through life, try and push yourself to be better than you are today. This can be a scary thought but you will become a better person for it.

Smile at yourself, at the things you do, at everyone you meet. It costs you nothing and you might make

someone’s day. Heck it may just get you that job you’re wanting. Either way, you’ll feel better. Smiles are contagious when you smile at someone, they smile back then they smile at someone else and so on. Be the reason someone smiles today. Try it, start a trend – I dare you.

We live in a busy world you have to fit so much into your day and at times you will feel like everything is just too much so if at times this happens, I want you to stop and take a breath then think about what it is you are trying to achieve and then start again.

Someone I listened to once said that we need to make a list of ALL the things we need to do today and if we accomplish one thing then at least we’ve achieved something.

Listen to the world around you. Listen to others, I’m mean really listen// try hard every day to actively listen and hear what people are saying to you. If you don’t understand the first time //ask them to repeat it. You’re far better off looking like a goose because you didn’t get it the first time than to finish something and it’s wrong.

With a bit of hard work and determination you’ll get that job, but it won’t come easily you will have to put in the effort. Being a dependable and responsible person is a skill and you need to grow a bit before all the great things happen for you. Please, don’t rush or wish your life away enjoy it as it comes.

There are times in life when you will question your choices and decisions –indeed your parents, and teachers question them all the time. The “what were you thinking?” phrase often escapes our lips before we realise what we’ve said. This is not meant in a negative way we just want you to make wise choices in your life. Think before you do. If it doesn’t feel right - don’t do it.

Do things that make your heart beat faster because at least you know you’re alive – just be careful when

Year 12 Farewelldoing the adrenalin stuff because you’ll worry your parents. You need to learn the difference between being brave and being foolish it’s quite simple really – just because your friends are doing something doesn’t mean you have to do it too. Stand up and make everyone proud of you and what you achieve in your life.

My Nana used to say all the old ‘wives tales’ (I guess you’d call them), when I was younger. She said things like:

Do things with passion or don’t do it at all.

Try to keep an open mind in the pursuit of happiness; no matter how bad things get, as long as you are willing

to work hard and keep a smile on your face, you will always be able to turn things around and find that

silver lining. And…

Respect is not something that just happens it has to be earnt.

So, be respectful in everything you do. Respect others but most of all respect yourself. Stand up for your beliefs. Question everything you hear. Don’t stop learning because the more you know the more places you’ll go. Build on the strengths you have and appreciate the strength in others.

Be like Walt Disney, (and me) ”if you can dream it, you can do it!” Dream big and go out there and get what you want out of life. Don’t sit on the lounge and wait for it to happen because your dreams won’t just fall in your lap. What you want exists, don’t settle until you get it.

There’s a meme that I have as one of my screen savers, it’s a great one for you as you leave us here at Wadalba it says:

“Sing like no one is listening

Love like you’ve never been hurt

Dance like no one is watching

And live like it’s heaven on earth”.

This could be your motto, whether you choose to be actors, performers, singers, musicians, athletes, artists, chefs, auto mechanics, nurses, hairdressers, teachers, aeronautical engineers or medical researchers the list goes on…

Sayings like these still have worth in the society that you are living in, that you are going to be responsible for one day. Find one that you have a passion for and make this your life’s motto.

Travel the world.

Explore beyond Wadalba,

go beyond NSW,

indeed, beyond Australia.

Have your fun but remember life is not a joke sometimes you need to take things seriously.

There are so many “discoveries” (sorry I had to do it -once) out there waiting for you.

Do it all before you come back and get that job that you need to survive, (or pay board to your parents.) But don’t work to live, live to work.

We spend so much of our lifetime working please find something that you love. If you don’t love your job then it becomes a chore and it’s just not worth doing.

Sitting your HSC is one of the greatest accomplishments that you will have achieved so far in your young lives, (well, besides getting your licence I guess) and I sincerely hope that there are many more to come your way.

Stand tall,/be proud of yourself, be true to who you are remember your values and the values of your families. Set achievable goals and try your hardest to accomplish them. Be proud of your achievements and keep looking for the positives. Expect the best – expect success.

If you want it, work hard to make it happen. Work through your problems, don’t leave it to chance or

Year 12 Farewellsomeone else – don’t sit back and waste your time.

Mark Twain wrote:

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do, so throw off the bowlines, sail away from safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, Dream, Discover.”

You all have the ability to share your talents and be remarkable individuals - you have a strength that you probably haven’t discovered yet.

Who do you want to become?

There’s a whole world waiting for you. Go and show them what you have. Go and create your destiny.

Good luck year 12 – I’ll miss your faces.

From the Principal

Season of Giving

As we move into the holiday season I wish to shine the light on the generosity and warmth of our students and community. The season of giving is a great time to celebrate the many acts of kindness that have occurred throughout the year.

At each of our end of year presentation assemblies the Wadalba Cup leadership teams presented donations to the charities that were supported throughout the year as part of the school spirit activities organised by the students. These charities were the Assistance Dogs Australia, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Save the Children, Make A Wish, Cancer Council, Oxfam, Red Kite and Beyond Blue. Thank you also to the students and families who have supported the Christmas Food Drive that will be donated to Vinnies and our other volunteering and charity work this year.

Learning is first and foremost

Congratulations to all students for their achievements this year. I hope each of you are proud of your achievements at school and beyond.

Congratulations to our Kindergarten, Year 6 and Year 12 students who all completed significant schooling milestones. We wish you well as you move forward.

Thank you to staff and families for supporting the learning accomplishments of our children and young people.

Happy Holidays

I would like to wish everybody a safe and happy holiday.

I hope that all of our students get the chance to read some great books over their well deserved vacation. Reading is a great way to relax as well as supporting the retention of knowledge over the vacation period by keeping the brain active.

On behalf of my own family and the staff I would like to wish all families peace and best wishes for the holidays.
