Kia ora Parents and Caregivers Welcome to 10 wonderful weeks at school. Yes just 10 weeks for Y11-13 to get all that content in, 10 weeks for students to learn life lessons and in fact all sorts of lessons. Teachers are refreshed and have planned superb learning programmes. The Habitat for Humanity Fiji trip was a real success and will become an annual event for us. The 2010 Israel team flew in Tuesday morning and is bursting with all that happened. We are looking forward to hearing from both groups of students in coming assemblies. Secondary staff held their first blue hat/blue sky brainstorming session this week regarding the planned new Y9-13 facilities on the corner site. QUOTE: “…..God is striding ahead of you. He’s right there with you. He won’t let you down; he won’t leave you. Don’t be intimidated. We look forward to hearing the stories unfold over the next few weeks and know that our students will be impacted forever by the amazing experiences they have had in Israel and Fiji. We praise God for their safe return and thank the teachers who invested so much of their time and commitment to ensuring the success of these trips. Congratulations to Angel Nurdjaja who came 3 rd at The Australasian Brain Bee Challenge (Round 2 North Island finals) held at the University of Auckland on Wednesday. There were approx 150 contestants who made it to Round 2 in this challenging competition. This is particular significant because Angel’s older sister, Vinka (now in Y13), did the same in 2008! Y 0-8 NEWS WORLD VISION TOTAL: Congratulations to all Primary and Intermediate students who did the famine and collected their money by the end of Term 2. The Grand total was $8, 600.00. WELL DONE!

Y 0-8 INTERACT THEME FOR TERM 3 – GOD IS CREATIVE; Our theme this term is inspiring, with plenty of scope and opportunities for curiosity, investigation and engagement for our students. In Devotions we will be studying the creativity of God in the Genesis account, looking at the creation of people in God’s image, and the amazing design in all aspects of creation. In Science we will marvel at God’s creativity of animals and plants. In Social Science, special focus will be given to the diversity of people groups and nationalities, and our gifting

and abilities. This will be highlighted in an International Week celebration 23-27th August. (Week 7) We will

reflect on how every people group is made in God’s image and reflects something of his nature. Parents who can

contribute aspects of your culture will have opportunity to support our cultural activities. Considering our

indigenous people, the Maori, we will marvel at the way they have used their creative gifts over time, to

communicate their ideas about the world. Their patterns and designs will be a feature of Visual Art in some

classes.

In Language we will seek to be creative in our writing of fantasy, narratives, reviews and reports. In Reading we will observe the creativity of writers and will celebrate the diversity of literature with an exciting Book Fair 6-10 September. (Week 8) The KEY COMPETENCY focus is participating and contributing to our school community. This means USING OUR SKILLS to SERVE. Students will have opportunities to use their abilities to perform at our PRIMARY TALENT NIGHT on Thursday 12 August, or in a cultural dance at our International Week Assembly and Dance events. Y 0-2 will also visit the Museum during International Week (Wed 25 July) to appreciate the Tala Pacifika display.

WELCOME to Mrs Tracey Dillner who has been appointed to the Year 7 position in R27. Great to have you

joining our teaching team. TERM 3 Team Teaching in R4. Mrs Fletcher, Mrs Eagle and Mrs Bellard will all have

regular teaching days (or half days) in room 4 next term. These capable ladies will ensure full curriculum coverage

enabling Mrs Fletcher to pursue ICT support and other responsibilities.

CONGRATULATIONS!! To Mrs Robyn Powell who has given birth to a healthy baby boy on Saturday 16 July, and to Mrs Anneke Duinkerke whose baby girl, Mariesa, arrived on Tues 6 July.

TERM PERMISSION SLIPS will be issued during week one and we ask you to sign and forward

payment promptly. Thank you.

Elim Sport: The ACS netball and soccer day that was cancelled at the end of last term has been rescheduled. It will now be on Tuesday the 10th August. Please make sure all permission slips are returned as soon as possible.

The school wide cross country will be taking place on Tuesday the 31st August. This will run once again with the Run4Bibles. More details will be given in assemblies very soon. The time table for the day will be posted closer to the date so that you can see when your child is running and come down to support. The social boys football team travelled out to James Cook High School on Tuesday afternoon to play their match that was cancelled last term. Elim didn’t capitalise on their opportunities going down 4-1. Unfortunately the score didn’t reflect the game, with our boys playing some great football.

UNIFORM SHOP HOURS: For Students who will be Yr 12’s in 2011. Due to the high costs

involved with the purchase of uniform stock, the school operates a pre-order system for the current Y11 students. This procedure enables the school to bulk order, therefore obtaining the best purchase price. This system requires students and parent if required, to visit the uniform shop for a fitting of the necessary Senior uniform items. This "fitting" is a compulsory requirement and you may pre-pay, or pay at the time of collecting items in the following January. All items must be fully paid for when collected. Regretfully we cannot provide time-payment options. The dates for 2010 Year 11 Students to come to the Uniform shop, will be Term 3, Week 5. Monday 16th thru’ to Wednesday 18th August, at 3.00pm-4.30pm.

This system requires students and parent if required, to visit the uniform shop for a fitting of the necessary Intermediate uniform items. This "fitting" is a compulsory requirement and you may pre-pay, or pay at the time of collecting items in the following January. All items must be fully paid for when collected. PEOPLE ARE SIGNIFICANT The author unknown

"During my second month of nursing school, our professor gave us a quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions, until I read the last one: 'What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?" Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? "I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. 'Absolutely,' said the professor. 'In your careers you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say hello.' "I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy." When you look at the life of Jesus, one of the things that stands out is the value Jesus placed on people. He didn't just see everybody as a mass of humanity; he made an effort to know people on an individual basis. And as he came to know them, he acknowledged and met their needs. The gospel of Luke is filled with stories of many of these people and their encounters with Jesus. He was compassionate to the poor, the sick, the hurting, the sinful. The story of Zacchaeus is typical of so many of Jesus' encounters: "Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, 'Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.' " (Luke 19:2-4) People deserve our attention and care, even those people who may seem to be "insignificant" -- because of appearance, because of a lack of wealth, because of a handicap, because of their occupation. By the way, do you know the name of the person who cleans your school or workplace? If not, I encourage you to find out.
