DI TREVORINSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAMWe are very fortunate at BSPS to have such a high quality Instrumental Music Program. As most of you know, this program is coordinated by one of our parents, Maria Fitzgerald, and incorporates a wide variety of musical options for your child to take part in. In my experience at other schools, I’ve never seen an Instrumental Music Program so authentic and engaging for students and that is testament to our wonderful team of teachers. This year, some teachers are working through waiting lists and some have a small amount of vacancies. If you’re on the fence about enrolling your child, then I encourage you to get in contact with Maria, or visit our website for the complete list of teachers and their contact details: http://brunswicksouthps.vic.edu.au/?page_id=125
CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) – LATEST ADVICEWe are continuing to monitor the Coronavirus situation, including advice from DET and liaising with families of children who are absent from school or returning from overseas. The Commonwealth Government has announced an extension to existing travel restrictions to visitors from:
 Italy
 Republic of Korea
 Iran
mainland China (not including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan).
Victoria’s Chief Health Officer has issued advice that overseas school excursions should cease, except to New Zealand and Canada. We do have an Italy trip planned for later this year and it is too soon to predict whether or not this will be impacted.
No directive has been received yet for local excursions, camps or events, however next week we have our 5/6 Camp and our 3/4 Swimming Program. It is anticipated that these events will proceed as planned, with students, staff and families encouraged to follow the same precautions we have been following at school. These are:
Wash hands often with soap and running water, for at least 20 seconds after going to the toilet, before you eat, and after blowing (or picking!) your nose. Dry with paper towel or hand dryer.
Try not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow.
Keep your child at home if they feel sick and phone your GP first if you need medical attention. They will tell you what to do.
Continue healthy habits: exercise, drink water and get plenty of sleep
This week we
began our school tours to prospective 2021
families – can you believe it?It’s one of the favourite parts of my job because I love sharing what we do with others and showing what it looks like in actionANNUAL IMPLEMENTATION PLAN (AIP)Our 2020 Annual Implementation Plan has been endorsed by School Council and by DET (Dept of Education and Training) and is now available on the school website. This plan outlines in detail our work for this year and ensures our energy is focused on the right work. This year our work will focus on Mathematics and Writing, with staff working collaboratively on our school wide goals. In addition our 5/6 team will have a prioritised focus on Reading allowing us to work closely with some students and track their progress closely.
We’ve also prepared an ‘at a glance’ version, which highlights some of the key goals and actions more succinctly, making it accessible to our community. You can find a copy of it attached to this newsletter. Thanks to Madeleine Aikenhead for putting this together!
COMMUNITY & FUNDRAISINGWe’ve had an unlucky start to the year from a Community & Fundraising perspective. Having to cancel our Welcome Picnic due to weather and not having enough registrations for the Trivia Night has meant we’ve had to postpone it. I am sure things will start to improve, with the end of term picnic on Friday 27 March from 2.00pm onwards and the Trivia Night rescheduled to mid May.
It’s also time to put the call out to members of our community to step up and join our Community & Fundraising Sub Committee. We’ve had some long standing members who’ve decided to step away or reduce their involvement this year. This has provided an opportunity for new families to step in and become involved. This a fantastic way to support the school, but also to connect with like minded families and build on your own skills. Your support will also mean we can successfully run all our Community and Fundraising activities scheduled for 2020. If you are keen to get involved, contact Jean-Pierre Masclef on [email protected].

Get the flu shot (available in April – we’ve booked in for all our staff to get theirs!)
 Shaking hands is optional!
As you know this situation is unfolding day by day. If arrangements for our 5/6 Camp or 3/4 Swimming do change, we will notify families directly through Compass and Social Media. Please make sure you can access Compass and have downloaded the app to your phone.
STUDENT LED CONFERENCESIf you have not booked already, there is still some time to secure your spot for Student Led Conferences on Tuesday 24 March from 1.00-7.00pm. You can book at www.schoolinterviews.com.au with the event code: D 8 Q F D.
Buon weekend,Trevor.
RECONCILIATION ACTION PLAN
(RAP)
And that’s a Rap!
Last Tuesday, the RAP working group had their first official meeting. We celebrated the school’s achievements so far and started discussing some potential future actions. The primary focus for our school community for Term 1 and Term 2 will be to prepare and organise events for National Reconciliation Week (27th May -3rd June). Some of the proposed ideas include:
A fundraiser organised by students to raise money before the 27th May to fund events for National Reconciliation Week
A fundraiser organised by students to raise money for a First Nations charity during National Reconciliation Week
Screening the documentary ‘In My Blood It Runs’
Screening the documentary ‘Returning Our Ancestors’
Djirri Djirri Wurundjeri Women Dance group performance/workshop
These are just a few of our initial ideas, we want to make the most of the week and will continue to research some more potential events! If you have an idea or know a possible contact, please let the school know via email.
Teachers have been working hard to integrate First Nations content and perspectives into units of work. Foundation have been learning about caring for Country. After Aunty Di’s Welcome to Country, the Year 1/2 students wrote some letters of appreciation. In year 3/4, students have looked at Wurundjeri seasons and biographies on significant First Nations People. The Year 5/6 students have been learning about the traditional lore of the Yapa people and contrasting with the history of democracy.
Our RAP proposal has been submitted on the Naragunnawali website so hopefully we hear back from Reconciliation Australia soon!
Thanks!

FOUNDATION
YEARS 1/2
Well done to all the Foundation students on their first full-time week of Primary school! We have been extremely busy learning together (imparare insieme), creating together (creare insieme), and living together (vivere insieme).
In Mathematics, we have been exploring numbers, as well as distinguishing between day and night. It has been incredible sharing our understanding while reasoning with each other. Some of the questions we have explored these past few weeks have been:
 What comes after day?
How long is a school day?
What activities do we do in the morning and at night?
 How can you show time?
Why don’t you extend your child’s learning by asking them to count to you in English and Italian?
In Grade 1/2 Writing we have been learning about people in our Community who help us. Students have been constructing information reports in Italian on firefighters, Vets and police officers. We are so proud of their writing!
In Grade 1/2 Maths we have been using macaroni to explore counting, skip counting and grouping numbers in authentic contexts. We have also been working collaboratively to consolidate our recall of number facts. In Literacy, we have been learning about and writing information reports. We have also been investigating words using concrete materials.
S.T.E.M The Foundation students are continuing to make their ‘Teddy Towers’ out of a range of different materials. Most recently, we have explored different products that can act as ‘joins’ for our building materials. The students made teddy towers out of skewers, which they joined together with jelly lollies and marshmallows, and learned how to use a product called Makedo which can be used to join cardboard together.
In Term 1, the Grade 1/2 students are learning how to code. They have learned that a code is a set of instructions a computer uses to do any task.
The students have created games and mazes, avoiding obstacles, collecting rewards and using code to safely move their character from start to finish. They played with the introductory coding program ‘Scratch Junior’ to create their own animated stories and games.
Excited students used the much - anticipated ‘Bee-Bots’, a programmable floor robot that can memorize up to 100 instructional steps. Next week, we will start to make a whole town for our ‘bots’ and code different routes that the bots can take from one destination to another.

PERFORMING ARTS
ART
Students in Yr 1/2 have been busy learning their lines in our ‘Tre Porcellini‘ scripts and working with their groups to prepare for our final presentations at the end of term.
Students in Foundation have been playing drama games to explore working with a partner and making actions with their bodies for their partner to mirror. We have also focused on story telling and the characters in the story of ‘Ceneretola’.
Performing Arts - Giuliana
Foundation students have discovered (and laughed about!) Italian-born artist Amedeo Modigliani's long neck portraits and created images of themselves through careful observation.
After looking at Modigliani's artworks, students had time to 'study' their faces and expressions (!) by using small mirrors. We then discussed basic proportion of the face and students had a first go at drawing themselves. In the following session, students tried to include features that are unique to Modigliani, such as elongated neck, almond eyes and long noses. Some students were not very keen on those features and decided to draw themselves differently. The results are cute and funny at the same time! Soon on display in the learning centre...
Gr 1/2
After working (tirelessly) at their individual Mondrian's abstract piece, students are now embarking on a more collaborative project. Each student will be creating a mosaic on a CD using paper tiles, and then all the CDs will be placed together to form a sign above the art room door. We started by thinking of simple designs as in the photos below. It's going to take time and patience, but we are feeling confident!
