CLASSES UPDATE

As indicated in the last newsletter, our student numbers have increased such that we can form a 10th class. As a staff we are discussing several options in order to make the best educational decision for all of our students. We are still receiving new enrolments and will hold our decision until the last two weeks of term to cover all bases. The scenario most likely will involve a small modification to the year 1 students in Mrs Haste and Mrs Bishop’s classes. Any change will take place at the beginning of term 3, after all of the semester one reporting process has been completed. A transition process will also take place to assist the students in this change for semester two.

PLEASE LABEL EVERYTHING

Over the next two weeks could all parents take the time to check clothing, lunch boxes, drink bottles, hats, handballs, etc. for names. Our teachers will also support the process by doing daily checks and writing names on items too. This label blitz will hopefully reduce the amount of lost and handed in items.

DISCO

Our next disco will be held on Tuesday 6 June. Thanks to the staff and P&C for making this happen, the kids really enjoy these discos!

GYMNASTICS

The children are really enjoying the Gymnastics activities so far. This is an activity funded through the Commonwealth’s Sporting Schools program and there is no cost to the children. Thanks Mrs McCleary for yet another great sporting opportunity for our students. Please ensure your child has returned their note so they can participate in this program.

LIFE EDUCATION

Teachers are going through a series of activities to follow up from the successful Life Education visit recently. It was great to see local educator Leanne Goggin and Harold turn up in our car park for several days and for the lessons that covered different topics from kinder to year 6. The $10.00 fee for Life Education is because the program has no government funding and relies on student participation fees, fundraising and donations. The small items of merchandise also help to raise funds to keep the Life Education program on the road.

LATE ARRIVALS PROCEDURES

Department of Education guidelines require any students arriving late to school, for any reason, to be accompanied to the front office where an official register is completed including a reason for being late. We understand that there are many acceptable reasons for being late including doctor’s appointments, speech therapy sessions, broken down vehicles and road closures etc. If your child is not escorted to the office for this completion of the attendance register, their partial absence is listed as an Unexplained Absence.

CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL – LOWER NORTH COAST

Good luck to our many runners heading off to Kempsey on Monday 29 May to compete in the Lower North Coast Cross Country Carnival. Mrs Haste will be attending as manager of our school team and I will be a marshal on the course somewhere, cheering on our kids as they run past.

GRIP STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Our six student leaders that make up our Student Leadership Team will take part in a leadership development program next Wednesday in Port Macquarie. This is to further develop the many skills required to make our leaders successful in their roles. Over the past two years, our student leaders have really enjoyed this leadership experience.

MULCH

Please feel free to bring your trailer and get a load of mulch, or seven, from the big mulch piles behind the cricket nets. It’s FREE!! If you need to come on the weekend, give me a call and I’ll try and coordinate to let you in.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME

“The Cow Tripped Over The Moon” by Tony Wilson

The aim of the campaign is to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books.

Hopefully more than 500,000 children over 3,500 locations will have the opportunity to take part in National Simultaneous Storytime today.

A very funny book about not giving up!

Lake Cathie kids enjoyed it. (So did the staff).

LIFE EDUCATION

The Life Education programs cater to all ages and stages – including a focused secondary program - engaging children in an age-appropriate learning experiences around a range of topics including: friendship; nutrition; resilience; peer pressure; cyber safety; bullying; drugs; alcohol; safe use of medications and smoking.

“The Life Education program puts students in situations where they need to make decisions, solve problems and interact with others to find the best possible outcome in a situation related to their wellbeing.”

The aim of these preventative programs is to empower children to make the best choices by giving them the knowledge and facts around issues they may face growing up. All material is based on sound theory and current research, and is an accessible and enjoyable experience for all children involved.

Life Education also offers a range of helpful resources for parents on their website www.lifeeducation.org.au

DEBATING WORKSHOPOn Thursday 18 May, 8 students from Lake Cathie attended a regional debating training workshop at Laurieton Public School.

Our school representatives were Quinn Carmichael, Vincent Miller, Cora Puttick, Kiera Hetherington, Zoe Bulmer, Eliana Pagotto, Eva McKerrow and Brooke Instrell.

Throughout the day the students were trained in the fundamentals of primary school debating, learnt how to plan and prepare a debate and also methods of delivery.

Experts from Sydney travelled to present the workshop and they passed on very, very valuable ideas and strategies to the students.

It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm all students displayed and fantastic to know that they took many life lessons in public speaking and debating skills home that day.

All students were very well behaved and fabulous ambassadors for our school.

A very big ‘thank you’ to Kate Pagotto, for helping to transport our students to Laurieton and back.

Mrs Bailey and I look forward to working with our debating teams this year, in preparation for debating competitions next year.

Well done and congratulations!

Mrs Melissa Harris

Debating Coordinator
