Term 5, Week 3, Day 1 Maths: Time * Sing some of your favourite maths songs! * I know a lot of you have taken this opportunity to start to learn how to tell the time – what a great idea! Here is a little help using analogue clocks. * First of all, make sure you know what all of these words mean: O’ clock Clock Minute Hour Minute hand (or long hand) Hour hand (or short hand) * Now you need a clock – today’s activity is to make your own. You could use a paper plate, draw your own on a chalkboard or whiteboard and blu-tac on paper hands or use the template below. Phonics: Some lessons have been made by Letters and Sounds (the program we follow the order of in school) specifically for children in year 1. All of Jays are working at a level to be able to access these so I thought it might be useful to give them a try. The first lesson can be found here or by looking for letters and sounds lesson 1 year 1 on Youtube. Children will need a pencil and paper. My only concern is that the lessons may be a little long – please do let me know how you get on! English: * I have talked a lot about the need to use adjectives in your writing this year, so I thought we could spend a week practising. This week’s work is all based on the BBC Bitesize lesson, Using Descriptive Words (The title is the link. I’m getting so technical! Otherwise Google BBC Bitesize year 1 using descriptive words) I have broken it into smaller chunks to suit home learning. Activity 1: Watch the first video on the page. Can you write down as many of the adjectives used as possible then use them to describe items around your house. Music: A new song for you to learn! This week Mrs Washington has challenged you to learn a fun song, I Once Saw an Elephant, still with signing. I can’t wait to hear you sing it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGZlzrM0ChI Don’t forget daily reading and exercise for 2 more points!

Term 5, Week 3, Day 2

Maths: Time – telling time to the hour

* Sing some of your favourite maths songs!

* If you managed to make one, time to use your clock! If not, ask an adult to draw clocks for you or move

the hands on a real clock or watch. You could even try this online teaching clock .

* Can you set your clock to the following times? Remember, the minute (long) hand should always point to

12 for o’clock times, while the hour (short) hand points to the hour.

5 o’clock 8 o’clock 11 o’clock 3 o’clock 4 o’clock

* Can you read the time on these clocks?

Phonics: Lesson 2 or look for letters and sounds lesson 2 year 1 on Youtube – don’t forget a pencil and paper.

Activity 2: Watch the video of The Magic Faraway Tree being read. In the video, there are lots of different lands at the top of the tree. There was 'The Land of Toys', 'The Land of Topsy-Turvy' and 'The Land of Goodies'. What do you think each of these lands were like? Write a sentence for each land describing what each one is like (remember to use describing words).

Geography: Map symbols

* We have looked at symbols in many areas of the curriculum this year so you should be familiar with the word. I am going to ask

you to make a special map of your home next week but first you need symbols! Can you design 5 symbols to represent different areas or

objects in one room (or the garden) of your home? Maybe a brown circle to represent a table, a rectangle in the colour of your sofa or a

carrot to represent the vegetable patch in your garden. Remember to label them!

Maths: Time – telling time to the half hour

* Try playing dominoes by cutting out the cards below.

* For half past times the minute (big) hand will always be on the 6. The hour (small) hand will move halfway between the current hour and

the next hour. Can you decide which of these show the correct time?

Can you use your clock to show these times?

Half past 6 Half past 9 Half past 7 Half past 1 Half past 3

Phonics: Lesson 3 or look for letters and sounds lesson 3 year 1 on Youtube – don’t forget a pencil and paper.

Art: Animals in native Australian art

* Native Australians have been representing animals in their art for many years. Watch this BBC

bitesize video before attempting your own ‘dot pictures’ of Australian animals.

Term 5, Week 3, Day 4

Maths: Time – using a timer

* I have attached a grid below for you to do a 1-minute challenge with your family. You will need a

timer of some sort – maybe on a phone, the oven or just very careful counting to 60! There is a spare

row for you to add your own challenge.

Phonics: Lesson 4 or look for letters and sounds lesson 4 year 1 on Youtube – don’t forget a

pencil and paper.

English:

* Using Descriptive Words

Activity 3b: Now that you’ve created a new land, you will need to think about how you could travel there. Will you fly? climb? or maybe there will be multiple ways to travel there. If you were to fly there, what would you fly on - a magic broom, a bird, a rocket? Would there be other ways to get there? What would the journey be like? Once you've thought about all these things write down how you would travel there (remembering to include describing words) and draw what the journey would look like (including notes next to your drawings to describe things).

Science: Comparing and grouping animals

* Here are two animals. Can you think of something that is the same about both of them?

Can you name one difference?

*At the bottom of this document I’ve attached a sheet with lots of pictures of animals. I

wonder if you can find a way to split them all into two groups? Maybe you will go with 4

legs/not 4 legs? Or Can fly/Cannot fly? I wonder who can find the most interesting groupings.
