Over the years the school has built up financial reserves through fundraising and canteen profits. The School Council will soon be considering proposals to use a percentage of these funds for good equipment and resources that will benefit students. The School Perception Survey showed students and parents were strongly in favour of better information and communication technology (ICT) which would include new and more computers in classrooms, digital equipment such as cameras and others. These need to be supported by strong and up-to-date connectivity throughout the school. This is an exciting prospect as it could well position Wanguri at the cutting edge of education in the area. Computers and digital technology have become essential tools in education as they are in all aspects of life. Once it was the introduction of calculators that was considered a little shocking in primary schools but we have come a long way since then. Computers are now used extensively in education for researching information (reference books in print form are almost a thing of the past). There are tools and applications that support learning in a myriad of ways. By the time students attend middle school, assignments are almost exclusively ‘word processed’ and emailed to teachers. If you would like to contribute to the discussion about a big computer upgrade for Wanguri please email me at [email protected] and I will pass on all your comments to the School Council at the next meeting on 28 November. Remember your apples on

Mondays and Fridays.

There are many sources of information available to Defence Families; sometimes it is just a matter of knowing who to access for what purpose. DCO is usually the first point of call for information or help (1800 624 608), but there are other organisations that are busily working away to improve life for Defence Families, that you can access and actively participate in. One such organisation is Defence Families Australia. Defence Families Australia (DFA) is an advocate and voice for Defence Families. This year they have achieved quite a lot, including successful lobbying to allow members to have live-in child care that does not affect their housing entitlement. This year they will be lobbying for many improvements to conditions of service that will include:

• A review into current housing allocation policy to include a partner’s work or study location as a factor for rejecting or choosing housing

• A review into removals policy so as to allow the inclusion of items used for a partner’s home business on removal and

changing the warranty system to provide new for old in the event of damage or offering members the option for a ‘top up’ payment; and

• Expanding counseling services such as those provided by VVCS so that all Defence members and their families have

access to counseling and support.

Keep an eye on their website- www.dfa.org.au for updates on these and many other issues. DFA is interested in hearing your opinion on issues whether it is direct to the delegate (in the NT that is Laura Simpson-Helman who can be contacted via [email protected]) or through their annual survey. There is even a Jobs Board to help you to find employment and links to information regarding PEEP and other support services for partners and families. Once again I would like to thank everyone for their contribution to the Remembrance Day fundraising effort for solider on. The final tally was $666.46 - which is an awesome effort that will be gratefully received and well utilised by our physically and psychologically wounded veterans.

WetWetWetWet weatherweatherweatherweather

This week many students were caught in the rain on the way to school.

At this time of year it is advisable to pack an extra set of clothes, inside a plastic bag, in your children’s school bag.

Children can also pack their school shoes in the plastic bag and wear thongs to school. Students will then change footwear once they are undercover at school.

This minimises the need for office staff to contact parents to bring dry clothes to school.

Car Park SafetyCar Park SafetyCar Park SafetyCar Park Safety

There has been a report from a concerned parent regarding the number of cars speeding in the Darwin City Council car park and also not stopping for pedestrians using the designated crossing.

Please help to keep our students safe by driving at a safe speed at all times and remember to stop and give way to anyone using the crossing.

Thank you for your cooperation

The Sustainability Ambassadors are taking part in the Gutsy Challenge next week to raise funds for gastro-intestinal cancer research and are inviting all students to join them in this worthy cause.

Three Reasons to take the Gutsy ChallengeThree Reasons to take the Gutsy ChallengeThree Reasons to take the Gutsy ChallengeThree Reasons to take the Gutsy Challenge

1. 90% of Australians are not eating enough fruit and vegetables. By taking the Gutsy Challenge you will develop healthier eating habits.

2. A diet high in fruit and vegetables can reduce the incidence of dietary and lifestyle diseases, such as gastro-intestinal cancer.

3. The money you raise will fund vital research to save, extend and improve the quality of life for gastro-intestinal cancer patients
