Welcome back to Term 4! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday with family and friends. Thank you to Mrs Foreshew who relieved in my absence at the end of last term. She did a wonderful job! The term is shaping up to be a busy but exciting one. I am looking forward to creating many memories with the school community.

K-2 Author Visit – Lisa Shanahan On Tuesday our K-2 students, and their teachers, were mesmerised by the amazing and successful Australian author, Lisa Shanahan. Lisa grew up in Sydney and at an early age discovered the magic of stories. She shared her younger years, when she spent time imagining that she was a mermaid and waiting to shoot aliens at the breakfast table. The students were enthralled as they learnt that at the age of 11, Lisa convinced her brother and sister (our very own Mrs McDougall), that Frankenstein and Dracula lived behind the green door at the bottom of the stairs in their house! She is an award-winning writer of picture books and novels. Some of Lisa’s books include: Gordon’s got a Snookie; Bear and Chook; Daddy’s having a Horse; Hark, it’s me, Ruby-Lee and The Grand, Genius Summer of Henry Hoobler.

Lisa’s presentation included reading Gordon’s got a Snookie, involving the students in creative thinking and explaining the processes involved in writing and publishing a book. Our students left with an understanding that writing and telling stories is powerful! It was a fun, humorous and inspiring talk.

Welcoming our 2020 Kindergarten Students We have had two successful Kindergarten Orientation sessions. These sessions provide the opportunity for parents to learn more about our wonderful school and for the 2020 Kindergarten students to visit the classrooms and become familiar with the school environment. The children are doing a fabulous job. It was wonderful to see their smiling faces and enthusiasm as they engaged in a range of activities. We have one session to go. Thank you to Miss Premier, Mrs Steen, the Kindergarten Team, support staff, administration staff and our P&C for their outstanding organisation, dedication and hard work in ensuring this has been a wonderful experience for our families. I am looking forward to our new Kindergarten children being part of the Wattle Grove family.

Footy Fun Day To finish the term, we celebrated our Year 6 Footy Fun Day. The Year 6 students, parents and teachers

worked tirelessly throughout the morning to set up their stalls and prepare for the day. The teachers reported that it was an absolute joy to witness the faces of our students as they made their way through the activities and enjoyed the Footy Fun Day experience. The children enjoyed a vast range of activities, including the army commando course, food and novelty stalls. The support for Footy Fun Day was enormous and the amount raised was approx. over $7500. A big thank you to Mrs Richter and her team, and the Footy Fun Day parent committee, for their organisation of the event. photos on back page

2021 Selective High School Applications Selective high schools cater for academically gifted students with high potential who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates of their own academic standard. Selective high schools help these students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, using specialised teaching methods and materials. If you feel your child would be suited to a Selective High School, please visit website below. https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes Applications are online and need to be completed by 11 November (10pm). It is the responsibility of parents/carers to complete this process. All Year 5 students received a note providing necessary information. If you have any questions please come to the office and we can support families through this process.

Community Support! This week at Flag Raising the school was presented with a $10 000 cheque from Fulton & Hogan and Qube. These companies have donated this money to the school as part of their commitment to supporting communities. The money will support the construction of awnings near the portable classrooms. Plans are currently in for department approval and I am hoping construction will start soon. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Fulton & Hogan and Qube for their generous donation to our school!

End of Year Presentation Assemblies End of year presentation assemblies provide an opportunity to recognise student achievements. Whilst not every child receives an award, it is a night to celebrate the growth of every child and the learning journey they have undertaken in 2019. We have continued to make some changes to these nights to enhance the experience for all. These have been based on ongoing community feedback. Please see below for dates, times and venues. Kindergarten Presentation Day Date: Wednesday 4 December 2019 Time: 1:30pm Venue: Wattle Grove PS School Hall Stage One Presentation Night Date: Wednesday 4 December 2019 Time: 6:30pm Venue: Wattle Grove PS School Hall Years 3-6 Presentation Night Date: Thursday 5 December 2019 Time: 6:30pm Venue: Holsworthy High School (School Hall) A rehearsal for the 3-6 assembly will be scheduled later in the term. A note will go home regarding this event.

Halloween Fun - School Disco The last disco for the year is approaching quickly! The P&C disco is on 1 November from 6.00-8.00pm. There will be lots of dancing and fun to be had! There will be snacks and novelty items available. We hope to see you there. Please note, this is a parent supervised event.

Wattle Wanderers This week I visited 4 Crimson. I had the opportunity to share one of my favourite children’s story books – ‘The Return of Thelma the Unicorn’. This is a lovely story about the power of imagination and the importance of having fun! I had a wonderful time talking to the students about these key ideas. The students then engaged in an activity where they explored the difference between an opinion and a fact. The students worked cooperatively in pairs, having wonderful discussions! Well done 4 Crimson!

Light the Night Thank you

On behalf of the Roberts family, Wattle Grove PS, the

To Shine Dance Academy and the organising

committee we thank you for your attendance at our

Light the Night for Blake event last Saturday. We were

blessed with beautiful weather and everyone enjoyed

a BBQ dinner, lots of games for the kids and

opportunities to purchase raffle tickets for our

amazing prizes. The formal part of the evening – the

speeches and the lantern walk were extremely

moving and it was fantastic to see a community come

together to show their support for this wonderful

evening. We raised over $12, 000 for the Leukaemia

Foundation (they were very impressed) These vital

funds will go such a long way to fund the Leukaemia

Foundation's National Research Program to invest in

life-changing research and to continue the fight to

find a cure for blood cancer. Thank you again to all

who attended. Hope to see you all there next year.
