“Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.” Jim Rohn

Term Four brings the winds of change; Year 12 students venturing into new adventures, Year 6 students striding into Secondary School, farewells to staff and families. It is the cycle of school life in action and each year we say how quickly the time has gone and how quickly our students transform before our very eyes. This is the exciting change that happens in schools each year and we acknowledge this through various celebrations and special transition programs to assist the student and the family with the upcoming changes. Our Year 12 Graduation and Walk of Honour are two highlights in the calendar, particularly the Walk of Honour, when the Year 12 students have the opportunity to walk through the School and remember all the changes they have been a part of in the development of self and Grammar as a school.

All other year levels from Pre-Prep have been preparing for the change when they move into new surrounds, with new friends, new teachers and new opportunities. The winds of change are both exciting and a little daunting.

Our 2012 leaders have passed the baton to new teams who are eager and ready to take on the challenge and inspire their peers in 2013. We warmly congratulate School Captains Elena Pleass and Koby Jansen and School Vice Captains Jessica Vercoe and Cameron Gee. Junior School Captains Samuel Bogiatzis and Téa van den Brenk, and Vice Captains Ryan Harper and Fletcher Bruce are more than ready to lead by example and have the energy and passion to make 2013 a great year.

“Leadership is practised not so much in words as in attitude and in actions.”

Grammar has embraced a lot of change throughout 2012. I would like to acknowledge the leadership of Paul Clegg as the Acting Principal in Semester One and the support of colleagues, students and families. The school began 2012 very positively and it was a smooth and seamless transition for me as I stepped into the position from Semester Two. I sincerely thank staff, students, families and the broader Grammar community for your care and support of me and my family as we have settled so positively into the School and life here on the beautiful Sunshine Coast.

To families concluding their time at Grammar, thank you for your valuable contributions to the life of the school. We wish you success and happiness in your future educational journey.

On behalf of the Grammar staff and the Sunshine Coast Grammar School Council, I wish all our families a safe and blessed Christmas.

“Christmas doesn’t come from a store, maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more...” Dr Seuss

Mrs Maria Woods, PrincipalA MESSAGE FROM

Friendship Service and ColumnsDuring October, the Grammar Junior School gathered together for the annual Friendship Service at which the new Friendship Columns were unveiled.

These columns were the result of collaboration between the 2012 students of Year 2 and Year 5, and were created with several layers of bricks that were creatively designed and themed around friendship.

A special project, the Friendship Columns required considerable thought and careful planning led by our Artist- in-Residence, Mrs Birgit Sowden. This space is also home to the Friendship Chair, given to our school by Paul and Diane Dawes in memory of their much loved son Joshua, who is remembered as a great friend.

A gift of love and friendship, the Friendship Chair and now Friendship Columns have special significance for our school.

Please study the columns closely and open yourself to the wonder and inspiration that children bring.

In support of Pinktober for National Breast Cancer Awareness, a group of staff and students from Sunshine Coast Grammar School helped to make a contribution of an unusual nature with their public car wash at the Buderim Memorial Hall.

The students, as part of the Grammar Helping Hands team, gave up their Saturday to support the local Cindy Mackenzie Breast Cancer Foundation by washing, scrubbing and polishing as many cars as they could throughout the morning to raise funds for Pinktober.

Sunshine Coast Grammar School teacher and Grammar Helping Hands Coordinator, Ben Princehorn said that while many women across the Coast may be doing it tough, the students take great pride and reward in being able to help others less fortunate than them in the community.

Students put a shine on Pinktober Campaign“Thanks to all of those wonderful students, staff members and parents who helped out with the Grammar Helping Hands Car Wash; whether you were up to your elbows in suds, working at the barbecue stall or wobbling the publicity board by the roadside, your efforts are very much appreciated,” said Mr Princehorn.

“Together we helped collect over $1,024 for the Cindy Mackenzie Breast Cancer Foundation and although our contribution is only very small, it makes us realise how grateful we can be for our good health.”

“There seem to be many local families out there struggling and through this initiative we are happy to be able to lend a helping hand by scrubbing together to make a positive contribution in our community,” said Mr Princehorn.

Children learn from Principal1LW were excited to welcome their new School Principal, Mrs Maria Woods into their class on Tuesday, 9 October to learn about her cultural heritage.

Students have been discussing what makes some countries first world and others third world and discovering that the problems we face in our country aren’t really problems in comparison to what other children in the world are forced to live with.

Mrs Woods gave the children further insight when she talked about her country of origin, Papua New Guinea and what it was like growing up in another country and culture. She talked about the living arrangements, lack of electricity and availability of clean flowing water in Papua New Guinea. Mrs Woods also shared some of her special artefacts with 1LW, including a special bag called a ‘bilum’, which Mrs Woods was carried in as a baby on her mother’s head. All the students thoroughly enjoyed Mrs Woods’ lesson.

Father/Daughter

BreakfastThe Father/Daughter Breakfast was a huge success with more than 60 guests attending the annual event.

This event provided a great opportunity for fathers and daughters to spend quality time with one another, whilst enjoying a buffet breakfast prepared by the Year 11 Hospitality students.

A variety of topics were discussed throughout the morning, aiming to enrich relationships and build an even stronger bond between fathers and daughters.

SCHOOL CAPTAINS 2013Congratulations to our Sunshine Coast Grammar School Captains for 2013.

SECONDARY SCHOOL Captains: Koby Jansen and Elena Pleass.Vice Captains: Cameron Gee and Jessica Vercoe.

More than 800 of the region’s brightest young minds converged on the Lake Kawana Community Centre over two days to put their minds to the test for the annual Sunshine Coast Mathematics Tournament.

This tournament has for many years been an integral part of the academic calendar for many Sunshine Coast schools and provides the brightest mathematicians in our schools with the opportunity to participate in a stimulating and competitive environment.

Regional tournament coordinator and Head of Mathematics at Sunshine Coast Grammar School, Gerry Lynch, said that the two day tournament gives students the opportunity to test their maths skills against other students in the region.

“This is a regional initiative and it is imperative that we give our high achieving maths students the opportunity to work with like-minded peers in a fun, competitive and thought provoking environment.”

The competition consisted of both individual and team events, where the Year 6 and Year 7 students competed on Day One and Year 8 to Year 12 students competed on Day Two.

“I believe that it is important that we promote the study of maths in our schools. The fields of Mathematics, Technology and Engineering are widely considered to be essential underpinnings for the continued development of society,” said Mr Lynch.

“There is a high demand for graduates in the disciplines of Mathematics and Science and the existence of a tournament such as this is vitally important to continue to foster this development within our community.”

After two gruelling days of long division, multiple algorithms, problem solving and pure brain stretching challenges, our Grammar Mathletes came away holding their heads high. The competition this year was outstanding and Grammar took out the following places: • Year6SecondPlaceoverall• Year7SecondPlaceoverall• Year10ThirdPlaceoverall• Year12FirstPlaceoverall Congratulations in particular to our victorious Year 12 team of Sam Blake, Hugo Nicholls, Jamie Sherar, Zac Brown and Toby Pearce.

NATIONAL ROBOTICS

After a successful State competition, the same two teams named Duct Tape (Lokki Brown and Todd Billington) and The Eliminators (Angus Lane and Ben Rodgers) travelled to Canberra to participate in the Open Soccer Premier Division in the Australian Robotics Championship.

After the round robin matches, the Grammar was the only school in Australia to have both teams ranked in the top 8. Unfortunately, both Grammar teams were in the same half of the knock-out draw as the eventual winners, a Year 12 team from BBC using custom built robots. Duct Tape was knocked out by the BBC team in the quarter finals and The Eliminators in the semi finals. Angus and Ben were victorious in an exciting golden goal play-off for third, improving Angus’ fourth from 2010. The Eliminators finished as the highest ranked team using non custom built robots; however, they have been inspired to design and build custom robots for next year…..although at $5000 a robot, they are looking for some help to raise the funds! If anyone from the Grammar community is interested in helping out, please contact Mr Evans.

The teams were fantastic ambassadors for the School with their sportsmanship and willingness to share knowledge again recognised by both referees and officials.

Music GalaThe annual Grammar Music Gala was an absolute treat

for all those that came along to listen to our talented

musicians from Year 2-Year 12. The afternoon included

performances by the Year 5 Band, the Senior Choir/

Chamber Choir, Year 4 Strings, Junior Brass Ensemble,

Year 2-3 Choir, Year 4-6 Choir, both Junior and Senior

Concert Bands, as well as Junior and Senior Strings,

but the entertainment didn’t stop there! The Flute

ensemble, Senior Strings and Big Band all put on a

stellar performance.

Showcasing a selection of more than 1,000 artworks, workshops, sculptures, live jazz and artistic displays, Sunshine Coast Grammar was alive with colour and activity for the annual Grammar Art Show.

A hive of creativity, the event featured student pieces from Prep through to Year 12, as well as works that were on sale by internationally renowned local artists, including Kendall Perkins and Barry Back.

Now in its sixth year, the Grammar Art Show has grown in popularity and again featured the highly contested Grammar ‘Archi’ and prestigious Grammar Emerging Artist Award.

Head of Visual Arts at Sunshine Coast Grammar, Rachel Downie was overwhelmed by the increased interest in the event and the addition of the GOMA style workshops for Prep – Year 6.

The cocktail event provided students with the opportunity to have their work on exhibition for guests to view in an open gallery style environment.

“Each year I am overwhelmed by the creative talent and effort students put into their works and this year was no exception. I was impressed by the calibre of artwork on display and visitors got to see a magnificent variety of works from the colourful and visually appealing to the abstract and thought provoking,” said Ms Downie.

“It was a wonderful event to showcase the diversity of our Visual Arts program and brilliant talent of students and emerging artists in an exciting and inspiring show for the wider community to enjoy,” said Ms Downie.

The event also featured a portrait room with a collection of portrait style artworks which were open to nominations for the People’s Choice Award online prior to the event.

Grammar Welcomes Past Student

JAMIE ROCHESTERto Exhibit at Art ShowAfter graduating from Grammar at the end of 2011, Jamie went straight into a Bachelor of Interior Design course at QUT, but after only a semester of it she quickly realised that she wanted to pursue a career as a professional artist instead. This has left Jamie with a six month window to refine her skills before starting a Bachelor of Visual Fine Arts at QUT early next year.

Jamie hopes to pursue a career as a full time artist, working on commissions and exhibitions internationally.

We asked Jamie what her first steps were after leaving school: “The first and hardest step I remember after leaving school was seeing all of my closest friends go their different ways in pursuit of their goals and careers. I guess it is something that you don’t really expect or plan for and it all happens so fast. I moved down to Brisbane to get closer to university and the art scene, whilst others moved interstate and overseas.”

Jamie also went on to say that “Attending Grammar for my final two years of schooling has completely changed my life. I can 100% admit that if I did not attend this school there is no way that I would be pursuing a career as an artist, or even be

making anything near as impressive as I can today. The support network I have found through the Visual Arts Department and the teachers at Grammar has helped tremendously with guiding me through the early stages of my career and for that I thank them tremendously.”

We caught up with Jamie when she was invited back as the Alumni artist to display her work at the sixth Annual Grammar Art Show.

Our Senior Concert Band, Senior Choir, Senior Strings, Big Band, and Chamber Choir set off to Toowoomba, followed by the Gold Coast for their annual music tour.

With 62 students this was the largest music tour yet. On arrival at Toowoomba Grammar we stepped off the bus and straight into workshops. After five hours of rehearsals with students from Toowoomba Grammar, The Glennie School and St Mary’s, directed by conductors from all participating schools, the students performed a wonderful concert to the public that evening.

The following day was filled with public performances by all ensembles at various other Toowoomba schools and St Stephen’s church. After a successful two days in Toowoomba, the party set off to the Gold Coast where the students performed to a very appreciative lunch time audience in Fig Tree Court at Australia Fair Shopping Centre, Southport. On our last day we kicked up our heels at Movie World before returning home.

This was another fantastically fun and successful music tour and all students who attended did themselves, their families and the Grammar School very proud!

The Year 12 Hospitality students at Sunshine Coast Grammar took over the reins at the popular Mooloolaba restaurant Fish on Parkyn for the night, as they hosted their end of year function.

Restaurant owners, Jon and Sue Koning daringly handed over control to the students, who have been perfecting their skills in all aspects from waiting tables to working behind the bar and were eager to show off these skills.

This evening allowed students to demonstrate their practical performance knowledge and understanding in a real world environment to further enhance their experience.

Sunshine Coast Grammar is thrilled by the news that their Head of Junior Sport, Ms Maureen Cummings has placed Third at the World Triathlon Championships in Auckland, New Zealand.

A true sporting enthusiast, Maureen has dedicated her life to triathlon and has a real passion for helping others reach their sporting potential.

Reaching a peak as an elite triathlete in the mid ’90s, Maureen has represented Australia at the Commonwealth Games and continues to achieve impressive results.

Maureen was first out of the 14.9 degree water and second off the bike, only to be passed with 200 metres to go by an American competitor at the World Championships.

“We are incredibly proud of Maureen’s efforts. She is not only an incredible teacher, but a champion competitor, and as a School we congratulate her on her outstanding performance at the World Titles,” said Maria Woods, Principal at Sunshine Coast Grammar School.

HEAD OF JUNIOR SPORT PLACES 3RD AT WORLD TITLES

The Year 12 Hospitality students were eager to step into the restaurant, but admit that there was a lot of behind the scenes preparation that was required for the big event.Students were responsible for all aspects of the event from creating the invitations and designing the menus, to taking bookings, organising uniforms and arranging the entertainment for the evening, not to mention preparing and serving food and beverages on the night.

A big thank you goes to Jon and Sue Koning for enabling the students to utilise their top class facilities, which provides such a valuable real life experience to help showcase the skills they’ve developed over their two year course.

MELBOURNE CUPThe Grammar Parents and Friends Association hosted a terrific Melbourne Cup Lunch at Fish on Parkyn in Mooloolaba. The event attracted over 100 parents, staff and guests with a range of great prizes on offer, including the popular Calcutta auction.

The Grammar Open Tennis teams have again performed creditably at the State Titles, with our girls finishing second and the boys finishing third.

Our Girls team, regional champions in six of the last seven years, were pipped in their final match by a very strong Kelvin Grove line up. Nevertheless, our team, comprising Andi Dikosavljevic (C), Brittanie Cumner, Ellouise McCarthy, Eliza McKean and Tara Cumner, played excellent tennis.

Congratulations to our boys and girls who contested the tennis, cricket and basketball games against Barker College from Sydney.

Our tennis boys showed strength and conviction, only losing one set the entire afternoon. Games of singles and doubles were enjoyed by all. As the day was very hot, everyone enjoyed drinks throughout the afternoon.

The energy expended by our cricket team was astounding. For four long hours the boys and Julia Brown batted, bowled and fielded trying to win against stiff competition. In the end the match was a draw, which is highly unusual in cricket.

Our basketballers were playing together as a team for the first time. They tried many different tactics against a very polished Barker team. The match was an extremely close one up until the fourth quarter, when Barker threw a few more hoops than we did.

Andi Dikosavljevic underlined her national ranking of 52, with outstanding on and off-court leadership. One of our stars of the future, Tara Cumner, also played excellent tennis, with two singles wins against much older girls.

Our Boys team comprising Koby Jansen (C), Jack Moore, Angus Horner, Sam Pearson and Liam Fallon strolled through the first day of competition, but came up against powerful teams from BBC and Brisbane Grammar School on the last day.

We were very competitive in both fixtures with the results being four sets each, but both Brisbane schools won more games than we did. Koby Jansen was the standout for Grammar, being unbeaten in singles and doubles with his partner, Jack Moore. Koby and Jack’s defeat of the top GPS doubles pairing was the match of the tournament!

Our students were acknowledged by all for the quality of their tennis and their great sportsmanship. Many thanks also need to go to Trish Cumner, our co-manager, Zoran, for his enthusiastic coaching, and our parent supporters.

Future State Great Award - Sam BlakeCongratulations to Sam on being awarded the Future State Great Award for the Sunshine Coast Schools’ region. This award recognises Sam’s achievements in a variety of sports this year, including Triathlon, Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country. As part of this award, Sam receives a bursary to assist with the costs of competing in his chosen sports for next year.

Queensland Secondary School Athletics

Amy Baldwin and Sam Blake

Sam and Amy were part of the Sunshine Coast Regional team that competed at the recent State Titles. Sam managed to finish 7th in 800m and 3rd in 1500m in the 17 years Boys event, whilst Amy had two top three finishes in Long Jump and Triple Jump, followed by a 7th in the final of 100m. This result has allowed Amy to gain selection in the Queensland All Schools Athletics team to compete at the Australian All Schools Championships from the 30 November to 2 December in Hobart.

After having three teams reach the semi-finals, Grammar only had one team reach the final match of the season – Junior Girls B. This team had played strongly throughout the year and managed to win their Grand Final comfortably. The team remained undefeated throughout the season. Congratulations to these girls and to all the teams involved this season. Thanks to all the parents and coaches for their great support at Water Polo this year.

Congratulations to Nikki

Bourke and Whitney

McCartney on their selection

in this representative team,

which will contest the State

Titles early in 2013. Both girls

have worked very hard at this

sport over the past year and

fully deserve their selection

Brianna Massie was also

named shadow player for this

team and has improved her

skills throughout the recent

season.

The Grand Finals for this competition were held in the past few weeks,

with Grammar fielding seven teams in the last fixture of the season.

Congratulations to all those teams who made it this far. Grammar

managed to secure four premierships – the most in our School’s history

– with Junior Girls A, Junior Girls B, Senior Girls C and Senior Boys

D all being successful. Grammar finished second in the Champions

10 Year Reunion Thank you to the Class of 2002 for coming along and sharing your stories with us! The reunion was held at Lot104 in Mooloolaba and enjoyed by all that were able to attend.

Our first ever Olympian, Billy Miller, graduated from Year 12 in 2005 and represented Australia in the 2012 Summer Olympics in the men’s national Water Polo team.

On his recent visit to Grammar, Billy spoke of his achievements and encouraged the students to follow their dreams.

Taking up the sport of Water Polo when he was 14, Billy made his senior debut as a 20-year-old at the Beijing Test event in 2008. Studying property development, he was eligible to compete at the World University Games where he helped the Australian team claim an historic gold medal in 2009. He continued to become a regular in the Sharks team and has competed at World Championship and World League level since.

Billy performed well at the 2012 Pan Pacific Championships, scoring five goals before going on to top score at the final match of the World League preliminaries with four goals in Australia’s 17-5 victory. His continuing strong form saw him win selection for the 2012 Games team.

The sporting gene runs in the Miller family, as Billy’s younger brother Mitch competes in the Kellogg’s Nutri Grain Ironman Series.

ALUMNI NEWS

Jordan MercerGraduating from Year 12 as School Captain at the end of 2011, Jordan is currently a full time athlete in training for several well-known events she hopes to compete in next year.

This year she has, once again, earned the title of Molokai 2 Oahu 54km World Paddle Board Champion, which she also won in 2011, and she is a current world record holder.

In August this year, Jordan was selected as a member of the Australian Life Saving Team by Surf Life Saving Australia and the Royal Life Saving Society, where she will compete at the World Lifesaving Championships (Rescue 2012) in November 2012. Jordan will compete in the Under 20 category and will contest 20 events across the pool, ocean and beach competitions at Rescue 2012.

Queensland Reds sign-up Blake Enever

After graduating from Year 12 in 2008, Blake’s rugby career has grown from strength to strength. In fact, his career has gone into overdrive since leaving the Sunshine Coast Stingrays at the

end of last season and joining Brisbane club Easts. His career, although still young, kicked off with him playing for the Stingrays colts’ team and, just recently, Blake has signed a breakthrough contract to play for the Queensland Reds.

Although Blake has been a member of the Queensland Reds Academy and the ARU National Academy since 2010, he made his first appearance for the Reds in an exhibition match against the Wellington Hurricanes at Stockland Sunshine Coast Stadium during 2012’s mid-season break, before his Super Rugby debut in June - a cameo appearance against the Melbourne Rebels.

In 2011, Blake was selected to play in the Australia Under 20 side which competed in the IRB Junior World Championship in Italy where he made 4 appearances and scored 2 tries. With his impressive size and athleticism, Blake plays in the position of lock; while away from rugby he studies Marine Biology.

Lisa BlairLisa graduated in the first graduating Year 12 class from Grammar in 2002. More recently she has been sailing the high seas in the Clipper 2011-12 Round-the-World Yacht Race whilst raising awareness for Oceans Watch International.

Lisa was sailing aboard the Gold Coast Australia yacht from August 2011 to July this year and her journey took her from the UK through Madeira, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, New Zealand, Singapore, Qingdao, California, Panama, New York and Nova Scotia, just to name a few places.

The Gold Coast Australia won the racing series overall with the most number of points and set two records in the process - one for most podium finishes in a race and most races ever won.

The trip wasn’t short of action either. One of the hairiest moments saw the yacht surf a wave at 17 knots when Lisa was halfway up the 90-foot mast.
