CINQUAIN

Have you ever thought of doing poetry in Italian? Cinquain poetry is one type that can be

easily used from year 5 onwards. The American poet, Adelaide Crapsey, who invented the modern form of Cinquain may have been inspired by the

Sicilian quintain, the English quintain, the Spanish quintella, the Japanese tanka, and the French cinquain which all

predate her. What she did invent, however, is a distinct American version of the five-line poem which she believed

"to be the shortest and simplest possible in English verse."

The Cinquain is a short, 5-line poetry form, with a distinct pattern. This is an appropriate poetry format for

beginners because it is short, and does not require rhyme. It requires the selection of prescriptive words (nouns,

adjectives, verbs and a simple sentence) that create the desired effect. There are variations of Cinquain but they all

have 5 lines.

The following outlines a simple format of a Cinquain for students:

Content Words

L1 Mamma a title 1

L2 bella, affettuosa a description using 2 adjectives to describe the title 2

L3 amare, sorridere, apprezzare 3 verbs that describe the title 3

L4 Lei è sempre disponibile a phrase that captures a feeling or the essence of the topic

4

L5 Mammina a word that refers back to your title or a synonym 1

Communication devices such as mobiles, phone texts, emails, instagram and facebook are fast replacing the art of letter writing. Until the middle of last century the written word in the form of love letters or cards not only expressed feelings of affection but became statements of intention. Reflecting a bygone era the following excerpts are from Come scrivere lettere d’amore : per donne e uomini innamorati che non sanno come fare!

Dichiarazioni

Ti amo, ti amo, ti amo, ti amo... Paolo

Matteo

Appuntamenti

Page 9: Term 4, 2015, Vol. 23, Issue 4, October.pdf

Il Centro – Co.As.It Resource Centre Newsletter Volume 23, Issue 4

Federico

Perchè non mi raggiungi all’aeroporto? Ti aspetto. Enrico

Carissima, Ti aspetto giovedì sera alle otto all’Ultimo Caffè.

Giorgio

Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine (San Valentino) is a celebration observed on February 14

each yearand is celebrated in many countries around the world.

St. Valentine's Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. Several

martyrdom stories were invented for the various Valentines. A popular account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that

he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians,

who were persecuted under the Roman Empire.

Italian Language through Art Appreciation

Of course, art is intrinsically worthwhile and warrants studying for its own worth. However, works of art can also visually represent vocabulary and many events and experiences which can be very easily be integrated in any Italian language program across multiple year levels. The works by the artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1527 –1593 (The Four Seasons : Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) are housed at the Musèe National du Louvre, Paris, and are of human heads consisting of fruits and vegetables, flowers, petals, and leaves. They are the perfect segue for introducing language relating to such topics as the seasons, colours and themes obvious in the art works. (A unit of work developed by Grace Alessandrini is availble from Co.As.It. Resource Centre.) Similarly, art is closely entwined with a myriad of other topics and can easily be integrated into Italian language programs providing a rich insight into both language and art. Affresco Italiano: corso di lingua italiana per stranieri A1 & A2 by Trifone et al, is one of many very comprehensive resources published in Italy. Bursting with Italian language content and grammar both levels include a page “L’Italia e...l’arte,” and what ensues is a plethora of works of art by Italian artists, eclectic in style, from different time periods, on varying topics. For example the chapter on leisure, introduces one to works by Fattori, Lega, Guttuso in “Il tempo libero...nell’arte” all depicting leisure activities. Below is a copy of the content:

Other topics such as numerals, daily life, cities, food, are included, with the second volume offering art works to complement famous Italians, homes, work and regions. As a teacher of Italian, Nadia certainly has her finger on the pulse. Based on

her resources Cavallo Caper’s Incursions compliment and enrich all Italian

programs by immersing the students in song, dance and drama. Language

learning is taken to a new level with a refreshing collection of songs, suited to

all age groups and written and performed by Nadia. Nadia Cavallo

Some Testimonials

On Friday June 17, we were extremely fortunate to have the wonderfully talented Nadia Cavallo come to our school, Nazareth Primary, to sing and perform her popular Italian songs for Italian Day. The children thoroughly enjoyed the sessions, singing and

learning new actions to her original songs. They were thrilled to meet her as they had been learning the songs for quite some time. I highly recommend Nadia to all schools. The children will love her just as much as love her songs!

- Dianne Dolley, (Nazareth Primary School, VIC)

Cavallo Capers’ Resources are fantastic, our clients want to borrow them frequently and I find that is never in the library at all. I’m still waiting for it to be returned from the country and someone else is waiting!!!

Hi Nadia, I am a teacher in Dapto, NSW. I ordered all your resources last year and since then I have used them constantly in my

Italian lessons in Year 2 and 3. Thanks for providing such quality resources. If you ever have new products, let me know and I'll order them.

Regards, - Paula Huckstepp (St John's Catholic Primary School, Dapto, NSW)

Nadia Cavallo spent one day a week during term 3 introducing our kindergarten children to the Italian language, culture and country through her fantastic Buongiorno Kit. The children and staff loved them both and we shared our journey with the families

by having a concert at the end of the term. Nadia had a lovely nature with the children and was very patient and warm encouraging the children to join in with her. Nadia's Italian lessons have been a fantastic addition to the program and have complimented the Early Years Learning

Framework. We look forward to having back again next year. Grazie

...She's fantastic for producing her wonderful material, isn't she?! I wish I was as musically talented as she is... her songs and her video and her activities too, have been so well-received

by the students. (Her own students must absolutely adore having her to themselves in the flesh!) - Donna (SA)
