Message from the Principal

The Father’s Day brekkie was a great morning with delicious treats to eat. What a wonderful way to celebrate with all our special dads, grandpas and that special person in our lives.

Thanks Cathy Baker and the team from Belle Property – Killcare for providing the most scrumptious breakfast for our dads.

Sensory Garden I am pleased to say that our Sensory Garden will start to take shape this week as the school is expecting a delivery of soil and rocks tomorrow or on Saturday. A huge thank you to Mrs Gordon for preparing the successful grant application and sharing our vision with the students and staff, Mr Rattray for his overall support of the program and for working alongside Peter Coleman and Sue-Anne Fulton for taking the students sensory garden suggestions and compiling an overall design for the garden and Peter Coleman from Peter Coleman Landscapes (and one of our amazing dads) for all his efforts and donations with the sensory garden project. Peter has kindly committed to donating his time and machinery to get the garden structure underway. Once the soil and rocks have been delivered, the area near the fixed equipment will be out of bounds for safety reasons. We will continually update the Sensory Garden information via the School’s Newsletter / Skoolbag App. SAKG – Stephanie Alexander Kitchen to Garden

The SAKG program is well underway! Funds have been raised by the cake bake day and the school has received a “one off’” grant from a government department, which has enabled us to send two teachers and 2 parent helpers to a SAKG training day in week 10. Thanks to Mrs Hutchens and Mrs Coombes for offering to deliver this educational program to students in 2019. Thanks also to Mrs Trigg and Mrs Ansell for being so eager to attend the training days and for driving our SAKG fund raising to support the introduction of the much worthwhile educational program – Stephanie Alexander Kitchen to Garden, for our school.

Yours in Education Deborah Callender – Principal S1 Niagara Park Stadium Excursion Last Friday, Stage 1 students attended Niagara Park Stadium for a fun filled day of sports’ activities. The students participated in volleyball, basketball, hockey, trampolining, foam pit jumping, wheel chair basketball and soccer. The day finished off with a yummy sausage sizzle and icy pole! We had such a fabulous time and we would like to congratulate the students on their participation and fantastic behaviour. Thank you to those parents who volunteered on the excursion, we really appreciate it. Miss Metcalfe and Mrs Gordon

Stage 2 Sydney Excursion What a wonderful time we all had on our big adventure to Sydney! After an early get up and quick stop under the Harbour Bridge, we headed to our first activity – The Rocks Walking Tour. We were dressed as governors, soldiers, free settlers and convicts and were taken on a guided trip to some significant places around the rocks. Did you know that there are shells in some of the mortar on the old buildings? Ask your child why! We then headed to the Hyde Park Barracks, to experience what it was like for the convicts in the early days of the colony. After some brick building we got to have a rest in the “cosy” hammocks. We identified some bricks having finger holes in them. Ask your child why! We then headed for our wonderful accommodation, right in the heart of the Rocks, where we had a yummy dinner and watched a movie to relax. The next day, we awoke to pack our gear, eat breakfast and then head to Taronga Zoo. We decided it would be a good idea to do the zoo in reverse – bottom to top! Each student had a scavenger hunt to complete and we saw some amazing animals on our walk. Even better, no one got eaten by the tigers (although there was a close encounter with the guinea pigs!) The students were extremely well behaved and we received numerous positive comments about their behaviour and knowledge throughout the entire excursion from the public and our guides. Well done Pretty Beach! We would like to thank the parents for supporting such a wonderful educational experience and for giving your child some memories that will last a lifetime. Year 3 News Wow! What a busy term we have had in Year 3! Not only have we been doing challenging work in English and Maths, we have been continuing our learning about First Contacts in History, this time with an Aboriginal perspective. We have learnt what it was like before colonisation, and how the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people lived harmoniously for 60,000 years. They used fire for hunting and didn’t need fences to mark territory, due to their nomadic way of life. We have also learnt about how the British had such different views about the land and ownership and how they brought illness, famine and conflict to the land. It was amazing to witness the students sharing so much of their knowledge during the overnight excursion to Sydney. This afternoon, Years 3 and 4 will be participating in a digital excursion to learn more about Bennelong. We can’t wait for our assembly tomorrow – it is sure to be as loud as Thunder! I am so proud of the students and their efforts so far this semester! KEEP IT UP YEAR 3! Andy Podmore Year 3 Teacher

They were also given the opportunity to meet some new friends who will be attending Kincumber High School in 2019. Well done to all students who participated in the day and we wish you all the best for future transition programs.

CC Spelling Bee Congratulation to Moby and Sascha who represented Pretty Beach Public School in the Premiers Spelling Bee Regional Finals at Warnervale PS. Our Super Sascha progressed to round 5 (the last 10 students) while our Marvellous Moby progressed to round 6 (the last 5 students). We are so proud of your efforts. Results of the stage 3 competition will be highlighted in the Week 10 Newsletter.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) At Pretty Beach Public School this term we have been striving for Excellence, Respect and Responsibility both in the classroom and playground. Over the past few weeks in particular we have been focusing on improving our behaviour on the oval. The teachers have been very impressed by the efforts of those students who have been following the school rules and behaviour has improved. Keep up the great work everyone. Additionally, we have our Bouddi trade day coming up on Monday of week 10 followed by our Bouddi rewards day on the last day of term. SLSC Talks Last week, Pretty Beach Public School students were visited by volunteers from SLSC to talk about safety at the beach. Students participated in activities designed to teach them the correct thing to do when swimming at the beach. We must always swim between the red and yellow flags. Rips are not easy to spot sometimes, but we also learnt that the most important thing to do if your stuck in a rip is to REMAIN CALM. Remember that you can always raise your hand when in trouble. Be safe at the beach as the weather starts to get warmer!

Canteen News

As previously mentioned we are beginning to remove some items from the canteen menu which no longer meet the guidelines of the Healthly School Canteen Strategy. We only have a limited supply of Rice Sticks, Paddle Pops and Icy Twists left for purchase. A new icecream option

The Patch

Erina Fair are hosting a community garden “The Patch” in centre from 3 to 30 September with a host of workshops covering sustainable gardening practices. At the conclusion of this initiative they would like to donate vegepods to local primary schools. A vegepod is a self contained garden bed ideal for growing all types of vegetables (image attached). It comes with a step-by-step educational program that immerses students in healthy and sustainable food habits.

For our chance to receive one they will be asking our community to vote for their school by visiting the community garden and placing a token in the relevant jar. The schools with the highest number of tokens will receive a vegepod. We are looking to give away as many as 10 units, each valued at $279, dependent on the number of schools participating. They provide a great opportunity for you and your children to learn about and/or supplement your knowledge of the benefits of sustainable gardening. All topics will be hosted by gardening experts from Sustainable Gardening or Mitre 10 Kincumber. Interesting article… Sessions Houston - (August 15, 2017) Violin lessons In HoustonIt’s no secret that there are many positive aspects to learning an instrument. It’s a given that anytime you set out to learn something new, whether it be a sport or a foreign language, it changes the way you think and perceive things. However, studies show that learning string instruments (such as the Violin, Viola, Cello, and Bass) has greater benefits than that of their musical counterparts. Here are some positive benefits to learning a string instrument. Who knows, maybe these benefits will inspire you to pick up a stringed instrument today! 1.Learning a string instrument improves academic performance This is especially true when it comes to Mathematics. Math and music are closely connected, and learning one subject can improve the other. When learning timing and rhythms on any of the string instruments, one will basically be using fractions and patterns to execute the performance correctly. This is helpful in the practice room and the classroom. In fact, parents have reported over time that after their child started playing a string instrument, their report cards dramatically improved. 2.String Instruments help develop hand-eye coordination In order to play a string instrument, multi-tasking and hand-eye coordination is a necessity. Running the bow across the strings while pressing on the proper places along the fingerboard takes some skill. Also, certain techniques like learning a proper bow hold helps contribute to flexibility and dexterity in the fingertips. Playing posture is an important aspect of learning a sting instrument and can improve sitting/standing posture in everyday life too! 3.It encourages patience and self-discipline Many times a person will catch a video on YouTube of a violinist or cellist performing a cover of a popular song and fall in love. Somehow, the musician always seems to make it appear as though playing their instrument is effortless and is something that can be learned overnight. This is not the case. Learning a stringed instrument is not an overnight process, it can take years and hours of self-discipline. It takes a load of learned patience. Most instructors will encourage their student to practice for at least 30 minutes each day. Careful, productive practice results in self-discipline which can carry over into academics as well. 4.Learning string Instruments leads to stronger social skills Many schools have early strings programs that continue as Orchestra classes throughout a student’s education. These programs are beneficial because they result in a situation where children have to work together to create music. Competing in ensemble competitions and performing in concerts/recitals creates opportunities for teamwork between the students. Interactions between the student and the conductor/instructor also helps teach students how to get along with authority and express themselves in a professional manner.

Father's Day Aprons We hope all father's enjoyed their special day on Father's Day. The P&C raised $345.00 through the uniquely crafted PBPS apron orders. A special thanks to Jo Clark for coordinating the apron orders and the donation of individual gift bags, and to Mr Rattray ensuring all student artwork was completed so that the aprons could be delivered in time for Father's Day. BLUE the Film Thank you to all those supporting the magnificent BLUE The Film screening at Killcare Surf Club last Friday evening. A dramatic sensory experience it was as the storm rolled in from the ocean and with a thunderous crack of lightning, Mother Nature reminded us of her powerful energy. A sight to be had with an estimated 70+ people attending, including children armed with bean bags to curl up in front of the big screen. The P&C raised $325.65 from the BBQ and gold coin entry donations; and Strings raised $185.00 serving good old-fashioned theatre offerings of popcorn & sweets bags and refreshing home-made lemonade. A special thank you to Killcare Surf Life Saving Club for the venue hire, Craig Sheppard assisting with the audio visual equipment and heartfelt message at the end of the film, Edwards Family Butchery for the tasty sausages and pulled pork donations, Killcare Beach Kiosk for extending their hours of operation in show of support for the community event, and the tireless work from the P&C Association volunteers.
