DEAR PARENTS AND CARERS

A big thank you is required for the huge effort by our community at the Bunnings BBQ on Saturday. We really appreciate the time given up by the volunteers, including the many parents that did extra long shifts. Very special mention must go to the Guerin family who ran the whole event and to Tanya Lovell who, like the Guerins, gave up her whole day to make sure it was a success.

On Tuesday and Thursday this week we had Literacy and Numeracy Advisors from Miranda Office working with our teachers to help them become familiar with the new Numeracy Progressions and to develop a scope and sequence of mathematics learning in K-6. The learning progressions are a national initiative that allow teachers to more accurately locate a student’s current literacy and numeracy knowledge, understanding and skills to support planning for learning and teaching from the syllabus. All schools and all teachers will soon be required to use the progressions, however only a small number of lucky schools are being provided with such personalised and comprehensive support in implementing this change. We will continue to work with the Literacy and Numeracy Advisors and the Educational Services delivery team over the coming weeks and months to ensure continued progress in our mathematics results at school.

our recent ICAS writing results, which have been outstanding and demonstrate our progress in improving writing in the school.

The whole school musical is progressing extremely well. We have come a long way since it was first announced in the Newsletter back in April, and the teachers have (as always) put in an extraordinary effort to make it a wonderful learning experience for our students. Further notes will come out about this event this week.

The week starting Monday 3 September School Administrative and Support Staff Recognition Week. The office staff at Laguna Street are a stand out in terms of their professionalism and dedication to the students, staff and school community. If you pop into the office next week, speak with the office ladies on the phone, or see Jon our GA in the playground, please join me in thanking them for all that they do.

It has been brought to my attention that a number of students have been downloading an app called ‘Mappen’. This app has some very concerning features in terms of safety and I have been informed that the app shares private information such as location and contacts. Please this discuss with your child and consider whether this is an appropriate app for them to have on their personal device.

JERSEY DAY

Friday 31 August marks the fourth annual Jersey Day, a national community-led initiative organised by the Nathan Gremmo Community Fund dedicated to spreading the message of organ and tissue donation and encouraging more Australians to register their donation decision at donatelife.gov.au.

Jersey Day was inspired by the story of Nathan Gremmo, who was tragically lost in an accident in 2015. Nathan’s family chose to give the gift of life to others in honour of Nathan’s generous personality. At the young age of 13, Nathan saved the lives of six others as an organ donor – five young adults and a baby.

Over the years, many Aussies including Turia Pitt, Steve Waugh, the team at Fox Sport NRL, Jonathan Thurston, Todd Greenberg, the Wiggles, Mark Bouris, Ray Hadley and many more have shown their support for Jersey Day by wearing their favourite team jersey, and having the conversation about organ and tissue donation and most importantly, registering to be an organ donor at donatelife.gov.au

We are encouraging students to wear a Jersey on Friday to raise awareness for this cause. Please note that it is not necessary to bring a gold coin, just a Jersey is a great way to be in support!

ZONE ATHLETICS

Congratulations to all the students who represented Laguna Street PS at the recent Zone Athletics Championship. The results of the carnival were the most outstanding in our school’s history. We achieved The ‘Champion School’ , as well as ‘ Champion School on Percentage’. This means, that not only did we achieve

better results than schools of a similar size to ours but we beat schools who may have been more than twice our size. This is a phenomenal achievement.

We will have 19 students competing at the Regional Championship in mid September, in both track and field events, including three relay teams.

A special congratulations to Mason McG and Tammin L who were also Cronulla Zone Junior Age Champions, additional to this achievement they also both created new zone records.

A big thankyou to Mrs Sally Clifton who did an exceptional job as Team Manager. Sally made sure that all students got to their events on time, issued and collected school singlets and cheered on every participant from our school, including her own girls. Thanks again Sally.

Best of luck to all at Regionals!!

WOOLWORTHS DISCOVERY TOUR

Last Friday Kindergarten students walked to Woolworths at Caringbah and went on the Woolworths Discovery Tour as part of their Science and Technology unit ‘Paddock to Plate.’ Tehy had fun walking around the store, meeting the people in charge of the fresh produce sections and found out some interesting facts. the children were very excited when they found out they were allowed to go out the back of the store where the food is delivered. They got so see the back of the fridges where the milk is packed and watched some boxes being crushed ready to recycle. Another highlight of the tour was tasting some delicious fruit and receiving a gift bag.

Thank you Joanne and Dianne for allowing us to visit your store.

BOOK WEEK

On Thursday the 23rd August, it seemed that many of the characters that we have grown to love and cherish had stepped out of their books and into Laguna Street public school. Students from kindergarten to Year 6 dressed up as their favourite storybook character and paraded class by class across the stage to much applause and appreciation from the audience. Special mention to the teachers that put in a great effort to come as the characters from the Wizard of Oz.
