SRC and Recycling You may notice our playground now has yellow lid recycling bins and a grate for collecting return and earn items. These two initiatives have been suggestions from the SRC. The SRC have been concerned with the over use of plastic in society and the way we dispose of rubbish at our school. The group thought the bins and the grate support the ‘Reuse, Reduce, Recycle’ concepts. SRC representatives will be talking with their classes about the bins, ensuring they are put to good use. It would be great for you to be discussing these concepts at home too! KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS FOR 2019 Enrolments for Kindergarten 2019 are now being accepted at Penrith South Public School.

If you or someone you know has a child turning 5 before July 31, 2019 they are eligible to enrol to start school next year. Please visit our school office between 8.30am and 3.15pm Monday to Friday to collect the enrolment forms. Completed application forms should be returned to the Front Office together with the child’s original Birth Certificate, current Immunisation Certificate and proof of address (eg Utility Bill, Rental Agreement or Council Rates). The NSW Department of Education Policy states that a child of compulsory school age (6 years old) must be enrolled at and attending a government or non-government school by the time they turn six. I look forward to getting to know our new kindergarten students and their families before they start school next year. The Transition to School Group commenced this Term. If you have any questions regarding your child’s readiness to start school please feel free to make an appointment with me to discuss this.

Penrith South Public School will hold a Great Book Swap event on Thursday 6th September which will coincide approximately with Indigenous Literacy Day. From 16th August the book swap will be announced at Monday and Thursday morning assemblies and be promoted in the school newsletter. Students will be encouraged to bring in books and classroom teachers will each have a collection point in their classroom for donated books. On the day of the book swap, tables will be set up in the school hall. Books will be arranged in approximate age group order. Each class will be allocated a time at 15 minute intervals (similar to Father’s / Mother’s Day stall) during the day to come and purchase a book for a gold coin donation (if book numbers look limited - 1 book per person). The stall will also be open at lunch time for students to make additional purchases. The stall will be supervised by Indigenous students in Stage 3 and a teacher from the Aboriginal Education team. Funds raised will be donated via the online donations function on the literacy foundation website. https://indigenousliteracyfoundation.secure.force.com/CICD__Donations?id=701A0000000ZeXP More information about the Indigenous Literacy Foundation can be found https://www.indigenousliteracyfoundation.org.au/. Giving parents a way to better understand their children: ‘Why does my child behave that way?’ ‘What does she/he need?’ and ‘How can I best help him/her grow?’

Inviting parents to reflect on their own experiences of being parented and how it impacts on their parenting

Providing an environment where parents can focus on their strengths and struggles and benefit from the experience of sharing with other parents

CANTEEN NEWS

From Monday 3 September (week 7), the canteen will have a new menu that has lots of new healthy items. The new menu is enclosed with this newsletter. Extra copies are available in the Front Office and Canteen.

We are phasing out the less healthy items and replacing them with fresh, natural ingredients that will be made from scratch on the premises.

Although the new Healthy Canteen guidelines do not commence until 2020, as a community, we want to be the first in the region to make the changes.

There are lots of amazing new foods that the kids will love.

Healthy Canteens whole philosophy is to provide your children with healthy alternatives. Tracy, our canteen lady, has built up great relationships with the community and all of the students, and it’s time to phase the non-healthy alternatives out of the canteen for good.

Each day, the kids are so eager to try the fresh cooked food, and the sales of our healthy counter items have significantly increased, so the time is now to make the change.

Healthy Canteens is only going to get better as we truly want what is best for our students.

Healthy Canteens

LOST PROPERTY Lost property is located in the foyer of Room 24 (OSH Club Room) in the white laundry basket. If an item is labelled, we will return it to the student when lost property is cleared. Parents and carers are asked to label all clothing, lunch boxes, drink bottles and school bags. Lately the great majority of lost property has been unlabelled items and therefore could not be returned to their owners. Parents and carers can help reduce the amounts of lost property by checking each day with their child that they have all their property eg hats, jackets and lunch items.

LOANED CLOTHES

Students are loaned clothes from the Front Office. Parents and carers are asked to please wash these items and return them to the Front Office so we can help other students.

Oshclub News Week 6 Term 3 Dear Oshclub Families, We would also like to advise parents on the following changes taking effect from 6th August:

If you would like to cancel a booking without charge, it needs to be 48 hours prior to the session

starting.

Within 48 hours of a session starting, full fees will be charged and the child marked as absent.

Please inform the service if your child is not attending a session they are booked into. We take

missing children very seriously and need to account for every child on our roll. Oshclub will now

charge a no show fee of $5.00 if a guardian does not let staff know beforehand if a child is going

to be absent.

Oshclub is focusing on Healthy OOSH this term! This is a government run initiative where we have partnered with the Western Sydney Local Health District to promote healthy eating and physical activity within our service. Please come in and pick up some healthy recipes or information regarding how we can ‘make healthy normal’

MAKE A WINTER WISE PLAN Cold weather during winter can worsen pre-existing chronic illnesses such as asthma and diabetes, so it’s best to be prepared. Asthmatics and diabetics should review their illness management plans, or speak to their GP if they do not already have one in place. NSW Health Winter Wise

HEAD LICE

Head Lice Spread and Treatment Tips It’s that time of the year again, when head lice are once again on the prowl. Head Lice Spread:

o Regularly check your children’s hair. o Teach older children to check their own hair. o Tie back and braid long hair. o Keep a fine tooth head lice comb in the bathroom.

Just remember, there is no single solution to stop head lice infestations, only persistence. Head Lice Treatment: Conditioner stuns head lice! The stunning effect seems to last about 20 minutes. After this time most lice are active again. Conditioner also makes it hard for the lice to grip the hair shafts. Lice hold onto hairs with their six claws, and when they are alive, they are usually not removed by the typical plastic fine tooth comb. If the hair is wet, or, better still, coated with conditioner, lice seem unable to hold on as strongly as on dry hair. Conditioner may also suffocate lice. Use conditioner on hair to increase the rate of detection. Applying conditioner to dry hair is best, but it will work on wet hair also. White hair conditioner has been recommended to be used for treatment.

o Apply conditioner to dry hair aiming to cover each hair from root to tip with a layer of conditioner. o Detangle the hair using an ordinary comb. o Immediately comb the hair with a fine tooth comb (preferably with cylindrical metal teeth – NOT FLAT

TEETH). Plastic nit combs are good for removing adult head lice but not necessarily the eggs. o Wipe the conditioner off the fine tooth comb onto a tissue and look for lice and eggs. o Repeat the combing for every part of the head at least 5 times.

For more information on head lice treatment visit: http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/publichealth/environment/headlice/treatment.asp

STOP THE SPREAD OF COLDS AND FLU. Cover the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the garbage bin

after use. If you don’t have a tissue cough or sneeze into your elbow. Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hands

cleaners are also effective. Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way. Anyone who is sick with influenza symptoms should be advised to stay home until their symptoms are

gone. See your family doctor about the flu injection.

If you or your child develops influenza-like illness, seek the advice of your family doctor as you would with any other illness. NSW Health
