PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Principal’s Message Last week all students were involved in the Live Life Well PE program with class teachers and Josh Cohen from the University of Newcastle. The weather was good and the students benefitted from learning different skills and having fun. Thank you Mrs McMillan for your organisation.

At the 1/2 Gathering last Friday the captains of Grevillea, Denzil and Jemma, the winning sports house, were presented with the shield from Robyn Norman our PSSA organiser. Congratulations.

Armidale Community of Schools A number of Newling students will travel to Ben Venue tomorrow for another massed choir practice. The evening extravaganza will be held at Lazenby Hall UNE on Wednesday September 3rd and will be a night you won’t want to miss. See details enclosed.

Earn and Learn stickers Please support this initiative sponsored by Woolworths and help make a difference at Newling by collecting and filling the sticker sheets and popping into the collection box in the foyer.

PSSA Athletics Carnival The carnival will be held in Tamworth on 28th August. A letter with the details will be sent home shortly.

Book Week Our annual Book Week activities will take place during Week 7 of this term. We value reading every day at Newling and Book Week provides us with extra opportunity to celebrate the importance of the written word! The theme for this year, as set by the Children’s Book Council of Australia, is Books Light Up Our World. This year a number of new and exciting items are planned. These include a book writing competition where children are invited to be the author/illustrator and submit a written book of their own choosing and theme. This competition will be open to all grades. Children will be given time to write in class or may choose to put together an entry at home. Entries for the competition will close at the end of Week 5 and winners will be announced at the Book Parade. Prizes for this event will be kindly donated and awarded by, local business, Remnant Archaeology.

Start saving for the Scholastic Book Fair which will be on display in the Library annex during Book Week. A terrific range of books and collectables at reasonable prices will be on display for purchase. The annual Book Parade is always a highlight of the Book Week festivities. Children will be working on costumes that reflect texts they have been working with in class. Please note that all costumes will be

prepared in class at school. It is anticipated that parents are not required to buy or make any special costume for their child. Stay tuned for the Book Parade date to be advised and please plan to come along and show your support.

Star Awards In the past weeks “You’re a Star Award” certificates have been achieved by students who are using the You Can Do It keys to success and demonstrating persistence, resilience, organisation, getting along and confidence. Congratulations to our recipients this week: Chace, Torrah, Tyrone, Dakota and Preston.

Many students in Year 5/6 are currently reading Hating Alison Ashley by Robin Klein.

This unit of work focuses on the power of friendships, the importance of networks of friends, anti-bullying behaviours, stereotypes and prejudices through an imaginative, informative and persuasive text. The students are reading, viewing, responding and investigating how text structures and language features work together to communicate ideas.

Just a reminder When an excursion or an event is postponed, the first not sent home is no longer valid. There will always be a second permission note sent home. This must be signed and returned to the school .

The Awards Gathering will be held on Friday August 21. You are invited to attend and celebrate the Bronze, Silver, Gold, Principal’s and Platinum achievements of many of our students. For your information we have attached the criteria for each award.

All staff are involved in the selection of students not only from their own class but of all students K-6 who meet the criteria. All enquiries about this procedure should be addressed to the principal and not the class teacher.

Our Principal Mr Murray Cox is currently on leave. We are all looking forward to seeing him back next month.
