Letter from the Principal ..Dear Parents and Caregivers

As we approach the end of the Term 3, it seems the older we get the days and weeks seem to simply fly by. This Term has seen a number of high profile events conducted at Kinross College. The annual Faction Athletics carnival was held in brilliant sunshine. It was again a superbly run event by Miss Nottle and her Physical Education staff. Our congratulations go to the individual athletes who performed so strongly on the day and to those who were successful in attaining champion or runner up athlete. Well done also to the students for the endeavour they displayed in the team events as it is the team rather than the individual who determines the champion faction on the day. Congratulations must go to the students and the coaching staff of Forrest, for being our champion Athletics Faction for 2014.

NAPLAN results have been handed out to students in Yrs 7 and 9. I would

encourage parents and students to analyse the results and reflect on successes and on any improvements that may be required in the time remaining this year. I know that College staff are only too willing to support students and parents in achieving the best possible academic results. On a bigger picture scenario I was pleased with the overall results of our Yr 9 cohort but very disappointed with the overall standing of our student results in Yr 7. As a group of educators we will now have to carefully analyse the results and devise further operational strategies to implement across the board for the remainder of this year and into 2015.

As always the students at the College have participated in a variety of activities across the term including the Yr 7 camp to Woodman Point, our Rangers engaging in their yearly track from Cape to Cape and a plethora of educational excursions in English, Arts, Physical Education, Student Services and our Academic Extension students presenting

Session times are the same each day of the week. Monday - Friday

about “Sustainability” at both Mindarie Senior College and The Royal Show-fantastic, well done and keep up the great work!

This week sees the completion of Term 3 - Wednesday 24 September. Thursday and Friday were approved by the College Board as 2015 planning days for our teaching staff. We wish all staff, students and parents a restful and well-earned break.

Term 4 will commence for ALL STUDENTS on Monday 13 October.

Faction athletics carnivalJumps and throw events were held on August 27 for qualifying students.

The Yr 9 boys high jump overall winner, for Stirling, cleared an amazing 1.6 metres!

The main, whole College, Faction Carnival was held on September 12.

Our whole College Athletics Carnival was again a huge success providing an opportunity to showcase some of our truly talented athletes.KC Athletics 2014 kicked off with jump and throw events on the Wednesday of week 7 (the week our carnival was scheduled to be held) which was an exceptional day, but we unfortunately had to reschedule our Track and Tabloid day to Friday of week 8. This ended up being a great call, as we were blessed with amazing weather which allowed our students to compete in ideal conditions.

After trialling all term to qualify for positions in events, students had the opportunity to demonstrate their athletic prowess in a range of jump, throw and track events earning both individual points and points for their House. Students who weren’t involved in track events represented their community in a range of tabloid activities which were once again a big hit!

The ‘half - time lunch break’ hosted an outstanding cheerleading competition (Congratulations to Forrest - again), while students enjoyed a sausage sizzle.

I’d like to thank all of the students whose behaviour and enthusiasm on the day was outstanding, the spectators who came along to support the kids, all of the teachers and parent helpers who worked hard to ensure the success of the day and the Phys. Ed. staff who did an outstanding job in the lead up and the overall running of the carnival.

Kinross College hosted another successful Interschool Athletics Carnival. Our year 6/7 students joined forces with students from Kinross Primary to compete in jump and throw events in the morning session, and a range of track and team game events for the remainder of the day.

Our students competed with outstanding commitment and sportsmanship, which resulted in the fantastic result of our second win in a row against Connolly and Beaumaris. We were really looking for a win this year as it will be the last time we ever join forces with Kinross Primary School! As we lose our year 6s next year, we will no longer compete in primary interschool or state wide events.

Well done to all of our primary school competitors - we definitely have some top athletes coming up through the College and I can’t wait to see you perform at equally high standards in the years to come!

Interschool Cross-CountryAll the kids’ hard work at training certainly paid off this year because their performance at both the Interschool Cross Country (1 August) and the Champion School’s Cross Country (12 August) was outstanding! The Interschool event, hosted by Quinns Rocks Primary School held at Gumblossom Oval, saw our school’s strongest overall performance ever! We again combined with Kinross Primary School to form an unbeatable team. Unfortunately, the event coordinator added our school’s points separately and our overall position was announced incorrectly. Once the mistake was clarified and our points were combined, we could confidently tell our amazing competitors that they had outperformed all 10 of the other schools competing in this competition. The Champion Schools’ event held at UWA Sports Park (McGillivray) on Tuesday 12 August also exhibited some amazing running prowess where our competitors achieved some incredible results given they were up against the best distance runners in the state! A special mention goes to Damon who finished in the top 10 in the state! We also had a number of students finish in the top thirty and most finished in the top 100 which is a reflection of their dedication to training and strong work ethic. I was very proud of the kids’ performance and the overall way they represented Kinross College at both events.

Physical EducationYear 6/7 Glory Boys’ Cup 2014On Friday 8 August a team of Year 6/7 Kinross College boys travelled to Kingsway Reserve to compete in the School Sport WA Glory Boys Cup. Up until this date, the team had been training hard during recess and lunch time to prepare for the competition and were eager for the day to arrive. The team started slowly in their first match against Peter Moyes but recovered in the second half to score a few well earned goals. This confidence was then taken into the next match where the team posted a really strong win against Mercy College “B” and went into the bye round with one win and one loss. Our third game had us come up against a very strong Mercy College “A” team, who despite our best efforts, were much too strong and skilful running out comfortable winners. In the final match of the day we played a very entertaining game against Connolly Primary School. The scores were locked at 2-2 close to the final whistle and both teams were pressing hard for the winning goal. It was not to be our day, with under a minute to go Connolly scored a very good goal to break the deadlock. The team is to be commended on the positive attitude and sportsmanship they displayed all day and from all reports everyone who participated in the competition had a great day. With a large proportion of the team being Year 6, our efforts this year will put us in good stead for next year with all Year 6 players able to play again. A big thank you to Aaron, Stefan and Ryan who helped train the team in preparation for the competition.

Year 8/9 Junior Boys’ Soccer Competition 2014During Term 2 a team of Year 8/9 boys participated in the School Sport WA Junior Boys’ Soccer competition. The competition involved a round-robin played after school against other teams in our pool. This year we had Duncraig SHS, Ocean Reef SHS, Carine SHS and Mater Dei College in our group. Our first fixture against Duncraig SHS was played on a very wet afternoon which made passing and receiving very difficult. In the end despite a mini comeback late in the game we were easily defeated. In our second game against Ocean Reef SHS, again we started slowly and without some great stand in goal-keeping from Michael the score could have been much worse

than 5-0 at half time. We re-grouped at half time and went back out with renewed vigour and played an exceptional half of football, including a hat trick from Cameron Teece, however at the final whistle we went down 6-4 in a very entertaining contest. Our remaining two fixtures saw us win convincingly against Mater Dei with a number of individual goal scorers and a very narrow loss to Carine SHS where we staged a very late comeback in the game. I would like to commend all the boys on their endeavour and sportsmanship throughout the tournament and for the time they committed outside of school to represent the College. Thank you to parents and families who assisted in transporting the students to and from the fixtures and for their support and encouragement from the sidelines.

Perth Glory women’s team training session On Wednesday 3 September a selected group of Yr 6-10 girls participated in a soccer clinic that was conducted by 3 of the Perth Glory women’s team players. They practiced numerous skills and finished off the session with a tournament. The students then had time to ask the players some questions about their training and the lifestyle that comes with being a professional athlete. The girls enjoyed every moment of the session and got to take home some posters, soccer balls and free tickets to their next game.

The 2014 Police Rangers open day was held at the Joondalup Police Academy on Sunday 14 September. We took 22 Kinross Police Rangers along to this event and of those, 16 of our amazing Rangers represented our unit in the drill competition against other units from across the state. We came 3rd overall in the drill competition, which is an incredible result given the calibre of drill on the parade ground (and that our unit’s drill instructors are of outdoor education and S&E background!). Our Rangers presented themselves to the highest standard in their number one blues and I was extremely proud of their confidence and teamwork as they performed their drill routine in almost perfect synchronisation. The Rangers had the opportunity to have a look through the police helicopter that landed on the parade ground and then rotated through a range of presentations and activities for the remainder of the day. We got to watch a theft scenario in ‘Scenario village’ where police cadets are trained to assess situations and follow police protocols. We got an insight into how things all work in a local courtroom and listened to a forensics presentation which were both really interesting. The Rangers had the opportunity to meet specialist police officers within the TRG, Bomb squad (and look at some

2014 Police Rangers Open Day

pretty cool equipment) and the dog squad. The highlight of the day however for the Rangers and myself was having the opportunity to fire handguns at targets! Even though they were training guns and operated with lasers, having access to that facility was an amazing opportunity! I think and hope we may have a number of up and coming police officers on our hands!

Brearley House fundraiser - World Vision 40 Hr famine In Term 3 the Brearley House Captains, Elisha and Emgee selected World Vision as their charity to support. This was done primarily through the 40 hour famine, but also through a hoody day and Starburst lolly guess. They also arranged an extended lunch time featuring a staff versus student basketball game on the day the 40 hour famine began. On the same day a number of the Student Council facilitated a session for the Yr 6 cohort, leading games and activities relating to 40 hour famine themes. Richard and Joe ran a simulation game where the class was treated as if it was the world, and food and water was distributed accordingly. Emgee, Corey and Lauren ran a water obstacle course to raise the issue of access to water in developing countries, while Elisha, Perri and Renae ran a scavenger hunt where students had to choose between resources like education, food and water. Finally, I spoke to the students about my experiences living in a developing country and how it is easy to take our standard of living for granted. Thank you to the Yr 6s for their excellent participation and well done to the Student Council members involved.

The final tally of money raised for the 40 hour famine was $3,862.20, a fantastic achievement by everyone involved. Special mention goes out to five students who raised over $250.00, Nicole, Kayla, Emily, Imogen and Rosie and to the one student who raised over $500.00, Natasha. Well done to those students and congratulations to all participants. All contributions are valuable and will go to helping families struggling to meet the most basic of needs in Rwanda.

Stirling House fundraiser - Motor Neurone Disease Association of WAEvery year the Student Council at Kinross College runs three fundraisers, with each House responsible for running one each. In Term 2 the Stirling House Captains, James and Caitlin chose the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association of WA.

In Week 4 of Term 2, the students organised a cup cake sale, a dress in blue day and the sale of wrist bands and blue poppies. Through these activities a total of $1,091.10 was raised, the money being handed to the MND Executive Officer, Fionnuala Franey at a school assembly in Term 3. Congratulations to James and Caitlin for your initiative and hard work and thank you to everyone who generously participated.

Student Council Principal’s morning tea

On Wednesday 20 August, a special Principal’s Morning Tea was held to recognise the efforts of all the Student Councillors for their hard work over the course of the year so far. The Student Council is active in a number of areas throughout the school but primarily in fundraising, organising assemblies and assisting with school events. The Principal’s Morning Tea was a token of our appreciation for their significant contribution to the College community. The Morning Tea was very enjoyable and a number of staff joined with the students and Mr Page, who took the opportunity to pass on his thanks directly to the Student Councillors.

Staff & Student Lunch-time basketball

As part of the Student Council’s program to promote the 40 hour famine, an extended lunch time featuring a staff versus student basketball game was held on Friday 15 August. The 40 hour famine began at 8pm that evening, so the extended lunch time was a reminder of this upcoming event. As always the basketball was hotly contested with a motley collection of staff from various departments taking on a number of student teams over the course of

the lunch break. Some staff had clearly planned ahead and brought along suitable attire, while others took to the court in shirt and tie (Mr Barclay) or a dress with boots (Miss Wills). Despite the somewhat unconventional attire the staff held sway in all matches, with perennial

all-stars Mr Williams and Mr MacBride leading the way despite some impressive student performances. An impressive crowd watched on and Mr Stone excelled as a referee, ensuring all matches were played in good spirit and no injuries were suffered. Thank you to all

who participated and those who watched on. We hope to host more staff versus student events in the future.

Yr 9 Junior VET: Working For OthersThe Yr 9 Junior VET group have worked really hard cleaning up toys and refurbishing furniture. The goods were made available to Kinross College as a result of a generous donation from Tamala Park Waste Management Facility. The articles are chosen and collected from the Tamala Park Recycling shop and then, once they have been cleaned or fixed, sanded back or varnished, they were donated to the Pat Giles Women’s Refuge. The recipients were very grateful for the donation to struggling families and most impressed with the effort put into the projects by the Junior VET group. So many new skills have been learnt. Well done and thank you!

Food Technology NewsOn September 1st, the Yr 10 Food Production class put their skills to the test by participating in a class cooking competition. The class, divided into two teams, each prepared an entrėe, pasta main and a dessert pie. Each team was judged on taste, presentation and service. The students thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. They successfully prepared delicious food, including bruschetta, pita crisps with olives, pasta carbonara, spaghetti bolognaise, a French silk pie and a chocolate caramel pie. Additionally, students worked well as a team and timed dishes perfectly so food was served hot. Service ran smoothly and students conducted themselves in a polite and professional manner.

Congratulations to the students for an outstanding event!

Yr 10 Academic Extension students get into sustainability

Our vision at Kinross College is to develop inspired, ambitious and

considerate adolescents to work with passion & integrity towards excellence.

So, when invited to be part of MSC’s ‘Sustainability Expo’ we jumped at the

opportunity.

Inspired by our own research and by what we are learning in class, (the Australian

Geography Curriculum), we were more than enthusiastic about this opportunity!

Following a field trip to Tamala Park for inspiration and a shopping spree at the Tamala Park shop, we sourced only ‘unwanted goods’.

These items are ‘Up-cycled’ objects that we have given a new life, a new purpose.

Waste Wise Schools Program saw our display and invited us to join them, at the Perth Royal

Show, during the holidays, with our ‘Up-Cycled’ objects.

We hope you are inspired to give an object a new purpose!

Watch this space...in next Term’s newsletter for an update of our display at the Waste Wise stand at the Royal Show.

On behalf of all Academic Extension students, I’d like to say thank you to everyone directly involved in the showcase evening on Thursday 18 September. A thank you to Mr Albert Jacob, MLA, for taking the time out of his busy schedule to visit us and to all parents, for their continual support through both the good times and the bad. The biggest thank you, however, has to go to our teachers; for without your unwavering dedication none of this would have been possible. It was a successful night, and everyone’s hard work definitely payed off!
