SRC News……. We held our first SRC meeting on Thursday 22nd June.

Student voice is one of our greatest measures as to how we are progressing as a learning community.

The active and authentic involvement of students has been identified as a key factor in creating safe

and supportive schools.

A significant body of national and international research suggests that student voice:

• should involve young people’s active participation in shared decision-making

• is one avenue through which students can explore and construct their own learning and develop

higher order skills

• is a key to personalising learning

• is a perspective of distributed leadership that is often overlooked

What is Student Voice?

The term "Student Voice" describes how students give their input to what happens within the school and classroom. Our desire is for students to know that their expertise, opinions and ideas are valued in all aspects of school life. Student Voice permeates all levels of our work together, from students participating in small group classroom conversations to students partnering in curriculum design or establishing school norms and policy.

Why is Student Voice Important?

One of the principles guiding the transformation work at Devenish is that student achievement and engagement will increase when students have more ownership of their school community. The Student Voice key element reinforces that:

1. What students have to say matters in how learning happens

2. Students have untapped expertise and knowledge that can bring renewed relevance and

authenticity to classrooms and school reform efforts

3. Students benefit from opportunities to practice the problem solving, leadership and creative

thinking required to participate in a decision-making school community

As principal of the school, when I asked students to discuss what improvements they have seen occur over Term Two, has been humbling and I must extend my heartfelt thanks to all members of our school community who have enabled the changes to happen. In this context I’m referring to; students, parents and staff

These are the improvements our students voiced:

Attendance handwriting maths skills & knowledge spelling

My ability to write different types of stories reading comprehension

Reading fluency coming to school on time being organised knowing I matter

Feeling cared for I can learn being a great learner WOW!!!!!

Student Reports 2017

Student Reports will be distributed on Friday 30th June

Student reports provide students, teachers and parents with a clear and concise picture of a

student’s achievement and progress at a point in time. Teachers make informed and

consistent decisions about student progress against the achievement standards using a

variety of assessments and observations to inform their judgement. They map the student’s

learning against the achievement standards, and place the student on the learning continuum,

that best reflect the student’s level of performance and progress.

You may notice some changes to our student reports this semester in line with the

implementation of the new Victorian Curriculum in all government and Catholic schools from

the beginning of 2017. The Victorian Curriculum replaces the previous AusVELS curriculum.

The Victorian Curriculum is structured as a single developmental learning continuum and is

organised by levels not years of schooling. The curriculum consists of Towards Foundation

Levels A to D and Levels Foundation to 10. All curriculum areas have achievement standards,

describing what students are able to understand and do.

All students are able to progress along the learning continuum at their own rate and from their

own starting point. Students are taught at the level that suits their needs, rather than just the

year level and age group they are in. Teachers provide learning opportunities to support the

learning for all students, including those students with additional learning needs or a disability.

Please keep in mind that as this is a new curriculum this report is not designed nor should be

compared to previous years’ reports, however student progress in English and Mathematics

will be shown in Semester 1 reports as these learning areas were introduced in 2016. For all

other curriculum areas being introduced with the new curriculum, student progress can only

be shown in reports from Semester 2, 2017 onwards.

Further information about the Victorian Curriculum can be found online at:

victoriancurriculum.vcaa.vic.edu.au/ or by contacting the school.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES - SEMESTER ONE

The end of Term Two brings us to the end of Semester One and our first reporting cycle for 2017. As such we would like to conduct Parent-teacher conferences.

These conferences provide valuable opportunities to help the teacher understand more about your child and are an opportunity for staff to share information about your child’s progress, interests and needs and discuss your child’s future learning goals for Semester Two.

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be conducted on Monday 26th June.

Please see attached information regarding your allocated Parent/Teacher interview time.
