Term 2 Newsletter ~ 29th May, 2014
Busy times, busy learning for students and staff as well at Gresford Public School. This fortnight our school happenings have
included a wonderful Gala Sports Day at Dungog High and an excellent Road Safety Education Day held at school. We have some
Year 6 students attending a Hunter Catchment environmental excursion today.
A Dungog High initiative saw our Year 5 and Year 6 students attend the high school to join with students from surrounding
schools to enjoy a range of sports led by senior students. Our children had a great day and learnt more about their local high
school as well as mingling with their peers in preparation for the big step to secondary school. We thank the students and staff
from the high school for organising this excellent transition experience.
Miss McAlister was the driving force behind our ‘Walk Safely To School Day’ activities held last Friday. Children had fun learning
about the importance of road safety and produced a great video, with the help of Mr. Taylor, starring students of course, which
summarised the important learning surrounding road safety. This video will be uploaded to our school website shortly.
Last week, Hazel Craig, (representing the P&C) and I accepted an invitation to join the Paterson Rotary Club’s meeting to outline
a proposal for an upgrade of our school’s Gallipoli Remembrance Garden. With the Centenary of ANZAC being commemorated
across Australia next year, it was decided to refresh this area with new gardens and turf. Paterson Rotary has generously offered
to assist with finance and manpower to complete this project in time for the centenary. The P&C has also added their support to
the project. It is hoped to eventually replace our outdoor tables and chairs to add a finishing touch.
Four of our senior students are attending the Hunter Water Catchment Crawl today as a reward for their prize winning entries in
the brochure design competition. Latia Hipwell and Liza Edwards, competition prize winners, accompanied by Jake Hipwell and
Zhane Duncan, are travelling by bus to carry out water studies and participate in Aboriginal Education workshops as well as en-
joying a visit from the Taronga Park Zoomobile. What a great day they will be having! Our thanks go to Sharon Hipwell for ac-
companying them on this excursion and providing transport to the bus pick up point.
We were sorry last week to farewell Cyril Redhouse from our staff at Gresford. Cyril has been an absolutely outstanding general
assistant at our school over a long period of time and has been popular with staff and students alike. Cyril has found the pressure
of balancing several jobs as well as caring for his family to be too much. There was no job too hard for Cyril and he will be sorely
missed. In his place we welcome Mr. Pete Webb who is experienced in the job, working at several other schools in the district.
Professional learning for staff has been in the areas of maths, literacy, assessment and reporting, special education, first aid,
office administration and leadership.
Kind regards,
Pauline

The simplest
way ……….to use leftovers in the
lunchbox
Leftovers are an easy way to pack your kids a nutritious
lunch, whilst clearing out the fridge.
Your kids will love these tasty leftovers and their lunch
box will be sure to come home empty.
Try some of these ideas:
Cottage pie or spag bol sandwiches - both taste
great on wholemeal bread
Healthy fried rice or stir-frys are a fun alternative to
a sandwich
Add leftover baked veg to a sandwich or use
steamed sweet potato or pumpkin as a sandwich
spread with cheese (then add your favourite salad)
