Dear Parents, Students and Caregivers
Recently I read an interesting article entitled “Not Every Act of Meanness is Bullying”’ by Michael Horton and
felt that there was an important message for parents, educators and even our students in what was written.
Some of what is written is taken from the article.
One of the roles of parenthood and teaching is to help children interpret events proportionally.
Like the author, I too have seen a shift involving the incorrect application of words such as trauma, depression
and bullying. When these words are misused, their misuse can result in unwarranted consequences. As the
article indicated, “What might be unkind behaviour of another may, in fact, not be bullying.
How we as adults define the two correctly can teach children resilience and how to cope with conflict.
‘All of us know from our own experiences of childhood or the schoolyard, that children can be thoughtlessly
mean. An experiment by a Debra Peplar at the York University brought children from years 1 to 6 who were
identified by their teachers as being either particularly aggressive or particularly non-aggressive. What they
discovered after observation was that the aggressive students were mean to others on average every two
minutes, and arguably more revealing was the finding that the non-aggressive students were mean on average
every three minutes’.
![Page 2: TERM 2 DATES FOR YOUR DIARY 2019 - Kinross College...general communications instead of the Flexibuzz App that we have been using for a number of years. Conflict is unfortunately a part of life that we all deal with, no matter what age. Bullying is however, way more
than that and can have serious and sometimes tragic consequences.
According to the ‘Bullying No Way’ organisation the National Australian definition of bullying is in part; ‘the
ongoing misuse of power in a relationship through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes
physical and /or psychological harm’. The key word here is the ongoing nature of the abuse.
It is important for children to understand the difference between someone being insensitive or mean and what
constitutes bullying because being able to successfully resolve and navigate these situations is a huge step in
their emotional growth.
Whilst bullying is never right and needs to be correctly understood and dealt with, calling every act of meanness
bullying sends an unhealthy message: It says to children ‘Your fragile. You cannot handle if anyone is even slightly
unkind to you’.
‘By defining the behaviour correctly, we are encouraging our kids to assess and respond in a way that with long term practice, creates resiliency and emotional maturity’.
Warm regards Rod Buckenara Principal
PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS: Thursday 4 July 1:00PM – 7:00pm
Students will be dismissed early, at midday on 4 July, to allow for these appointments.
The Parent Teacher interviews commence at 1:00 pm and run to 7:00 pm. Online Bookings will open on
Thursday 27 June. The link to online bookings will be shared to all families via a Connect notification (delivered
to your email or Connect app) and Flexibuzz. A link to your childs’ report will be emailed home on Monday 1 July
(this link is active for 4 weeks only, please remember to download and save within this timeframe). Please
ensure we have your correct email address at all times.
Note that students are welcome to attend appointments with their parent/s to discuss progress with their
teachers.
DELIVERY OF COMMUNICATIONS HOME
All schools have several methods of sending communications home and this seems to evolve and improve over
time. At Kinross College we, more and more, are using CONNECT (the Department of Education system) for
general communications instead of the Flexibuzz App that we have been using for a number of years. We will
phase out the use of Flexibuzz in the next few months and stop completely by November 2019.
The effectiveness of communication delivery relies upon parents keeping their emails up-to-date at school, at
all times.
If you have children at more than one school, could you please ensure that all schools have up-to-date email
contact details. When details are not correct, across all schools, this can affect the delivery of communications
home through CONNECT.
To ensure you receive your communications from school and prevent any landing in your junk mail, add the
domain name: ‘@education.wa.edu.au’ as a safe sender. If you think this may be happening and you are unsure
of how to fix this, we advise you search for the relevant advice online for your particular mail client (Outlook,
Apple Mail, Gmail etc) and/or device (PC, Android Phone or Apple phone etc).

GREASE PRODUCTION

nationwide productions such as ‘We will Rock You’,

upcoming production of ‘Cats’. We even have a few of
our teaching staff join in and perform! We are staging
this production at the Barbara Godwin Performing Arts
