PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Week 8 already and I am continually amazed at all the fantastic work that our students are producing. As I visit classrooms I see our students doing the best they can and showing outstanding commitment to their learning. Well done keep up the great work. Congratulations to Justine C who has been selected to represent The Tuggerah Lakes District at the Regional swimming carnival at Homebush on the 16th March. Justine was the Junior Girl swimming champion for the Tuggerah Lakes District. We wish you the best of luck at the carnival. As learning changes across our school community at The Entrance Public school, a challenge for parents and carers will be to ask their children, “What good question did you ask today?” rather than “How was your day?.” These types of questions encourage students to direct their learning and encourages a wide perspective on learning. A reminder that the toilets at school are for, The Entrance Public School students use only, visitors to the school throughout the day including before school in the morning and afternoon pick up that need to use the toilets need to see the office and be directed to a staff or visitor toilet. Thank you for your assistance with this issue as it is for the safety of our students and is a child protection issue. Facts about fractions: If you’ve forgotten 3/5 of primary school maths and 7/8 of high school maths, what’s left? Ah ha! Kids need help learning how to add fractions too. The only thing left is to print these fact sheets. STAGE 2 NEWS

Dear Parents/Caregivers, It is hard to believe but we are already into the final few weeks of Term 1. All students have settled well into their classes and are working really hard in achieving their learning goals with their teachers.

Mr Littlewood’s Leave

As you may have noticed, Mrs Chaffer has been the teacher in 4L over the past few weeks. This is because

Mr Littlewood and his wife have welcomed a baby daughter into their lives. He has been on leave and spending quality time with his new family. Mr Littlewood will resume teaching his class in Week 9. We thank Mrs Chaffer for ensuring that the students in 4L are engaging in quality learning.

School Photos

Thank you for making sure that the children in Stage 2 looked their best for the school photos. If your child did bring an envelope to order their school photos, then they should receive them in a few weeks. We will have them out as soon as we receive them. If you didn’t get to place an order but would like a set of photos, please go to the photographer’s website to place an order. http://www.msp.com.au

Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to all the students who participated at our annual school swimming carnival. It was great to see so many Stage 2 students have a go and earn points for their Sporting house. A big congratulation must go to Justine C and Amien D who are the junior swimming champions for 2016.

Q4:H2O Activity Week

Stage 2 will be participating in the Q4:H20 challenge. This is to promote the concept of healthy drinks to children and their families. Students are encouraged to choose water and reduced fat milk to meet their fluid requirements over the week the challenge is activated. As a result, we hope to encourage students to make healthier choices in regards to their choice of drinks.

Water Facts:

• Water is essential for many functions in the body. • Water is provided from solid foods, and is produced by

the body’s metabolism, but the remainder needs to come from drinking water and other fluids.

• A child’s fluid needs are best met by drinking water and reduced fat milk.

• Excessive consumption of sugar sweetened drinks such as soft drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks, cordial and fruit juices should be discouraged.

• A small amount of fruit juice (125ml – ½ cup) can provide valuable nutrients.

Reading With Your Child At Home

Here at The Entrance PS, we encourage students to read every night with our School Home Reading Program. When your kids see you reading and writing in everyday life – whether reading for pleasure, sharing a story with them or making a shopping list – it teaches them that they are useful skills. Attendance Chatter

To get the most out of a good education, children need to go to school every day. School attendance has a major influence on educational outcomes. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve better results at school and are more likely to complete their schooling.

Tips for Parents

Student absence fits into the following categories: 1. Illness/injury 2. Truancy. Your child is absent from school without your knowledge 3. School Refusal. Your child does not want to attend school, even though you have tried.

Page 5: Term 1 Week 8 th Wednesday 16 March 2016 · Term 1 Week 8 th Wednesday 16 March 2016 2 Due to health and safety issues eg allergies - students are not to bring eggs to school to share

Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher at any time to discuss any attendance concerns. Out And About

We love it when we see our students out and about away from school, however, we do encourage parents and carers to talk to us about school issues at school. All of our teachers are available through appointment and we are more than happy to accommodate a time that will suit you. By following this process, it allows your classroom teacher access to follow up any of your concerns as they arise and they can note down your discussion on our reporting system. By all means please do stop and say hi, but please keep in mind that we also have duties and responsibilities in our personal lives outside of school hours. Classrooms In The Morning

Just a friendly reminder that the classrooms are out of bounds in the mornings. If you need to speak to your classroom teacher, please see the office and they will call for your teacher to come and meet you in there, alternatively, you can make an appointment to speak with your child's teacher at a later more convenient time. STAGE 3 NEWS

Hey Team,

SLAM (Successful Learners All in Meet)

In SLAM all Stage 3 students have been learning about setting personal goals, identifying obstacles that can prevent us from achieving our goals and how to cultivate personal resilience when we ‘get knocked down’. Towards the end of the term we will

be focusing on learning about developing a growth mindset and how our thinking can really affect the outcome of what we try to achieve.

All ‘At Home Tasks’, ‘Home Reading’ and ‘Onward and Upwards’ records are in your child’s Student Diary. All of the teachers on Stage 3 would really appreciate parents and caregivers reviewing the work that each student is doing in the diaries at least on one occasion throughout each week. The link between home and school is vital.

Having a quick read of your child’s ‘DLIQ’ each day will help

parents and caregivers avoid conversations that run like this: Parent/caregiver: “How was school to day?”

Child: “Good.” Parent/caregiver: “What did you learn?” Child: “Nothing.”

At the end of each learning day every student reflects on the day of learning and writes one sentence each of the following aspects:

D - What did you DO that stood out most to you today? L - What did you LEARN that you know you will remember? I -What did you find most INTERESTING today? Q - What is one QUESTION that you have from what you

experienced today?

Year 6 Transition

Mrs. Player (principal of TLSC- Tumbi Umbi Campus) came and spoke to all of our Year 6 students who are transitioning to high school next year.

On Tuesday evening Mrs Player came and met with all of our parents and caregivers and imparted a great deal of

information regarding the transition and what families can expect throughout the process. Thank you to all of the parents and caregivers who attended this meeting on Tuesday night.

Tumbi Tours is the next transition events and this gives both students and parents/caregivers the opportunity to visit Tumbi High School and have a campus tour. Students and parents from our school are invited to attend this on Tuesday 22

nd March 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm.

Canberra

This year Stage 3 is travelling to Canberra as part of our History Unit focusing on Democracy. Information notes for Canberra have been sent home last week. A $75 deposit is required by the end of this term to secure your child’s place on this excursion. This excursion can be paid off over the coming weeks. Once the deposit has been paid, parents and caregivers can get a payment book from the front office which records the gradual payments made to the excursion total. If you are experiencing financial difficulty please contact Mr Stefans and a payment plan can be negotiated.

It is our aim to have as many of our students travel to Canberra as we can - it will be one of the highlights of Stage 3 this year!

Year 6 Shirts:

Our second and final order for Year 6 shirts has been placed. Shirts will be available by the end of this term. No refunds or exchanges are available once sizes are ordered.

Have a great week!

Russell Stefans Assistant Principal - Stage 3 [email protected]

Early Action for Success – ReadingTips Hints for listening to your child read

When reading together at home try to make the time relaxed, enjoyable and positive. Vary it. Read together, read to your child and take turns or have them read to you.

Before reading, talk about the cover, the title and the pictures, and discuss what the book may be about.

During reading, discuss what has been read up to that point and predict what might happen next.

After you've finished reading with your child, talk and ask questions about the story and the pictures. http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/en/homework-and-study/english/english-tips/reading-with-your-child-at-home

Congratulations to all our wonderful students who have received their 25 nights of reading certificate and a pencil. Our next award is for 50 nights and students will receive an ice-block from the canteen. Every night counts- even the weekend and school holidays.

Specialist Reports

If your child has seen an external support service such as a Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist or Paediatrican it is always helpful to share any reports and information with your child’s teacher or the Learning Support Team. This is most beneficial so we can work together to provide effective support for your child.

Primary Ethics provides the opportunity for NSW public primary school students who don't attend scripture classes (SRE) to participate in philosophical ethics classes. The classes teach children how to approach ethical issues and develop their capacity for considered moral judgment, which will enable them to respond more thoughtfully to many of the problems and issues they will face in their lives.

Volunteer Ethics Teachers are trained to deliver our age-appropriate curriculum every week and to use the accompanying learning and teaching materials.

Look out for a note coming home with your child. Currently, the class will only be for Stage 2 students.

For more information about the role and to volunteer, please go to http://www.primaryethics.com.au or email Anne Powles at [email protected]
