Once again we will be having an Easter Hat parade where all students from Kindergarten to Year 2 will have the opportunity to participate. The parade will take place on Thursday 9th April. Students will be encouraged to bring in materials from home to make their hats in class. Parents and caregivers are very welcome to join us. More information will be provided by class teachers very shortly.

As many of you would be aware police regularly attend schools to help patrol the extensive traffic that accumulates at school gates at pick up times and to ensure that people are not breaking the law. While we understand that these traffic conditions can be extremely frustrating it is imperative that everyone follows the road rules to help ensure the safe pick up of all our children. It is important for our community to understand that the teachers are there to help protect the hundreds of students who leave the school at the same time each day. They do not make the laws, nor are they responsible when someone does receive a fine. It is not acceptable to approach any of our teachers in an aggressive manner and it will not be tolerated. This week I have included information, which was taken directly from the Roads and Maritime website. By sharing the updated school zone traffic offences with you that were implemented at the beginning of last year, I hope to prevent any of our community receiving hefty fines and also continue to keep our children safe.

Seven school zone traffic offences Changes last year by the NSW Government have seen seven parking-based offences with harsher punishments when committed in a school zone, with fines increasing by up to 200 per cent. None of the seven offences attract demerit points when committed elsewhere on the road but in a school zone they each come with two points.

The changes are;

1. Stopping in intersection - Under the changes if a driver commits this

offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2

demerit points.

2. Stop within 20m of intersection (traffic lights) - Under the changes if a

driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit

points.

3. Stop within 10m of intersection (no traffic lights) - Under the changes if a driver commits this

offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.

4. Stop near bicycle crossing lights - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school

zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.

5. Obstruct access to ramp/path/passageway - Under the changes

if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive

a penalty of $330 and 2 demerit points.

6. Not parallel park in the direction of travel - Under the changes if

a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a

$330 fine and 2 demerit points.

7. Parallel park close to dividing line - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a

school zone they will receive a $330 fine and 2 demerit points.

We will be holding the next P&C meeting on Tuesday 10th March. The meeting will take place in the Principals office and we encourage all parents to come along. Whether or not you are a parent who is new to the school or a parent who has been here for several years but have never made it to a meeting, we would love to see you on Tuesday. The P&C is a great way to meet other parents and community members and to become authentic partners in the education process. We look forward to seeing you there.

Last Tuesday 21 of our students proudly represented Greenway Park Public School at the Zone Swimming Carnival. I’m very proud to report that our students demonstrated exemplary behaviour and outstanding sportsmanship. Thank you to Mrs Williams and Mr Chiandotto for attending on the day and supporting our students. Good luck to those who have made it into regional swimming carnival.

preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”

Congratulations to all the DP Award winners from the Week 4 Assembly. We loved recognising and celebrating your achievements during our party in Week 5. Everyone was well behaved and respectful and demonstrated why they had recently been awarded with a DP Award. Keep trying your best and I am sure lots of you are on your way to the Principal’s Award. Here are some photos. Thanks for keeping our school a safe, kind, proud and respectful place.

As part of the transition to move NAPLAN from a paper-based to an online test, a NAPLAN Practice Test will be undertaken by our Year 3 and 5 students. Both Year 3 and Year 5 will sit an omnibus test which includes questions from the domains of reading, conventions of language and numeracy. Year 5 will also complete a writing test.

At Greenway Park, we will be sitting the Practice tests according to the schedule below. It is important to remember that this is a practice, not the actual NAPLAN testing period.

NAPLAN ONLINE PRACTICE TEST SCHEDULE

Grade Writing Test Omnibus Test

Year 5 Monday 23rd March 2020 Tuesday 24th March 2020

Year 3 Wednesday 25th March 2020

The NAPLAN Practice test will not provide the school with any data about student achievement, rather it will act as an insight to the school’s technology capabilities and prepare students for the actual NAPLAN online assessment due to start Tuesday 12th may (more details to follow).

To ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students, the school regularly performs lock down and evacuation drills. Regular practice allows us to refine our procedures to further keep everyone safe. On Monday we participated in a lock down drill. All children responded in the appropriate way and classes were locked down within a very short time frame. Thank you to the students and staff for your diligence and commitment to ensuring the safety of everyone.

School photos envelopes and notes were sent home with your child TODAY. Photos will be taken on Tuesday 17th March. Sibling photo payment envelopes are available from the front office. Please read all details carefully before placing your order. Payment envelopes (with the correct money as change cannot be given) are to be returned to the class teacher on photo day. On line payments and orders can be made directly with the photographer.

After a very successful year of school banking last year, we hope to start up school banking again soon but we are calling for volunteers. If you can be of assistance please leave your details with the office.
