This is Week 4 of 10 in Term 1 2020!

We learned about bees. This is how we feed bees. We get sugar water

and we are filling up the feeder to the middle of the feeder.

We saw the ‘Queen’ bee. It was huge and it had a stinger. It also had a

green spot on it.

By Rayner and Twyla.

Kia ora,

Welcome to week 4.

It has been another hot week with no rain in sight. The senior swimming sports was a very well organised and successful event last Friday with some excellent swimming on show. We look forward to the Lower Waipa event on the 13th March. The children and staff have been very understanding about the reduced use of the pool due to the Water Alert 4 being imposed.

Christian Religious Education starts March 12th. Children attending last year status quo applies. We allow a three week time frame after the programme begins for children to opt in or withdraw, after that we require a request, either written or emailed to the principal to withdraw.

Enjoy the rest of the week. We are looking forward to Junior Swimming Sports this Friday.

OUR SWIMMING POOL

We are struggling at present to keep the pool up and running as we are now on Water Alert 4. Last week we nursed it along to make sure we could have the Senior swimming sports. This week we are doing the same; with a tanker of water arriving

this Thursday and with limited use of the pool we will be going ahead with the Junior swimming sports this Friday. The pool

therefore is closed to the community until further notice.

KEY COMPETENCIES

You will have heard teachers talking about the Key Competencies and the importance of these in the NZ Curriculum. I use the acronym TRUMP to remember them. Thinking, Relating to others, Using language, symbols and texts, Managing self, Participating and contributing. People use these competencies to live, work, and contribute as active members of their communities. More complex than skills, the competencies draw also on knowledge, attitudes, and values in ways that lead to action. They are not separate or stand alone. They are the key to learning in every area.

We look for opportunities to develop these in all we do in our teaching and learning at school. EOTC (Education Outside the Classroom) is one way to develop the competencies and one of the main reasons our school is so passionate about it. Briefly each competency is

Thinking– competent thinkers and problem solvers actively seek, use and create knowledge. They reflect, ask questions and challenge assumptions and perceptions.

Relating to others– the ability to interact effectively with a diverse range of people in a variety of contexts, be open to new ideas, listen actively, recognize others’ points of view.

Using language, symbols and texts– making sense of the codes in which knowledge is expressed, language and symbols are systems for representing and communicating information, experiences and ideas.– e.g. words, numbers, images, technology

Managing self– is about self motivation, having a can-do attitude, seeing themselves as capable learners, being resourceful, reliable, and resilient. Being able to establish goals, and set high standards

Participating and contributing– being actively involved in communities, which includes, families, whānau, and school. Being drawn together for learning, work, celebrations, or recreation.

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED

The NZ Transport Agency planned drop in sessions planned

for Tuesday 3 March, 2.30 -7pm

to review the speed limits in our village have been cancelled

I will keep you informed if and when any new dates are

shared with us.

Tēnā koutou katoa e te whānau Mōhio koe: Whakairo (Māori carvings) were some of our first ‘story books’ for Māori. Carvings would portray stories and traits about different ancestors, narratives, history, events, and each area of Aotearoa had a different carving style. Once you know these carving styles you can tell where the carving originates from, or who it is about or carved by according to the different carved patterns and styles. Kapahaka: I made an error in last week’s newletter - the ‘have-a-go’ sessions will begin next week, due to Junior Swimming Sports this Friday. Kapahaka will still be on for senior school students. Any senior students who know they would like to begin kapahaka are welcoome to attend this week. Whānau Hui: Wednesday, 4 March, 7pm in the Whānau Room. This will also be our AGM, and our planning hui for the fair which will be the Friday of the following week (13 March). Please see the Pirongia School Whānau Group Facebook page to add your ideas, or let us know what you can contribute for our Whānau Group stall for the Fair. Kia pai tō koutou wiki, nā Whaea Kathie
