Term 1 Reflection
Whilst we have two weeks remaining, with this being the final newsletter for the term, it is timely to take a moment and reflect on the wonderful learning that has taken place. In all classes students have established new routines, been presented with learning opportunities that have required them to think creatively, test theories and have been asked to work collaboratively with new and familiar peers. Learning has been shared with parents through a variety of electronic portfolios and many of you have, or about to, participate in three way interviews, providing further opportunities to hear about your child and their work in the classroom. Thank you to all the staff who work intentionally to design learning tasks that allow children to thrive and develop skills as powerful learners. Thank you also to the many parents who have volunteered in classrooms, the canteen, coached sporting teams, attended meetings and run fundraising events throughout the term. The contribution you make is highly valued by all staff and the whole school com-munity. On behalf of the staff, I wish all families a wonderful and safe holiday break beginning on April 13.
Swimming Carnival
Yesterday year 3-7 students and families assembled at Hazelwood Park swimming pool for the annual school swimming carnival. It was a fabulous day and the weather was perfect for a day at the pool. Students participated in novelty activities in the middle pool, on the grassed area and freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke swim-ming events were run in the 50 metre pool. Children demonstrated teamwork and showed support for each other throughout the carnival, with everyone contributing to the overall team score. At the end of the day the Year 7 House Leaders were presented with the Bev Bentley Shield and delivered a tremendous acceptance speech to the whole school community. Congratulations to Bradman as overall winner for the day. Well done to competing Houses, Stuart, Penfold and Florey who proved to be strong competitors. Thank you to our House Leaders, Casey, Alexandra, Harry, Alex, Daisy, Liana, Jonte, Joey, Jazmine, Abbie, Louis, Cooper, Mia, Jaime for their team support throughout the day. Thank you to Derek Ince, Jaime Will, Tanya Henry, Mark Ashby, Tyler Phillis, Anna Henderson and Abby MacPherson for their won-derful preparation, support and organisation enabling the day to run smoothly. Thank you also to all staff for their support and to the children, for their enthusiasm and wonderful participation throughout the event. Thank you to the many parents who were able to come along and support their child and the event, it was great seeing so many families at the pool.
Farewell to Jen McEvoy and Lee Walker
At the end of this term we farewell two staff members. We wish Jen McEvoy all the very best as she goes on maternity leave and our best wishes go to Lee Walker who has decided to take the opportunity to pursue further study this year. We thank both Jen and Lee for the valuable contribution they have made to student learning during the time they have worked at Burnside.
NAPLAN Testing
The NAPLAN tests will be held in week 3 of next term for all students in Years 3,5 and 7 from Tuesday 15th to Thursday 17th May. Aspects of literacy assessed are reading, writing and language conventions, while numeracy testing includes number, algebra, func-tion and pattern, measurement, chance and data and space. NAPLAN tests are another way of finding out what students can and cannot do along with school based and standardised assessments undertaken through the year. The staff analyse year level and individual responses to compare previous performance and look for further improvement opportu-nities. Parents will receive their child’s NAPLAN results in August/September later this year. Parents/carers may withdraw their child from NAPLAN tests for philosophical or personal reasons. If you wish to withdraw your child, please come into the front office and complete a withdrawal form by 11th May. The test schedule is as follows: Tuesday 15th May - Language Conventions, Wednesday 16th May - Reading and Thursday 17th May - Numeracy. Students who miss one day of testing due to illness may make up the test/s on Friday 18th May. All testing must be completed on this day as tests are then boxed and returned to the Department for marking.
Punctual arrival at school is important for these days as assessments begin promptly at 9:00am.

BPS Governing Council Education Committee keeps parents up to date with current school education. A school priority is to work in partner-ship with our community and to keep you informed of the way in which we develop intellectually-stretched, self-directed, powerful learners. One way we do this is by planning community workshops and keeping you up to date with relevant parent education opportunities. Jodie Benveniste, an international speaker in 'Positive Parenting' has been a previous keynote speaker at Burnside Primary and is a highly engaging speaker whose workshops support parents to develop their children as resilient and confident learners.
Parenting SA, a partnership of the Department for Education and Child Development and the Women's and Children's Health Network provide a number of free workshops. We welcomed Ms Yue Xu from Shenzhen Futian Meilin school, Professor Zhang Yan from
the School of Public administration, Quandong Teachers College of Foreign Language and
Arts, Mr Yao Yanhuan from Guangzhou Tianhe Changle Primary school and Ms Li Tong from
Shenzhen Futian Nanhua Primary School. An interpreter accompanied them during their
four days at BPS as they visited all year levels and specialist classrooms, attended assembly,
and met with school leaders.
Some of our Chinese speaking students did a superb job in conducting a school tour for
them. Thank you to Joy and Jodie for speaking with them as representatives of parents at
our school. They were very appreciative of the opportunities to meet with many members
of our school community and learn about many facets of our education system and school life.
The educators presented Ms Copeland with some gifts at
assembly and she impressed everyone with her welcome to
them in Mandarin. The visitors were in awe of our indoor
and outdoor space, as some of their schools have 2700 stu-
dents in multi-storey buildings with around fifty students
per class. They gave very positive feedback about the quali-
ty of the teaching and the skill and dedication of our teach-
ers in learning design.
It was a pleasure to showcase our school to them and we
thank everyone for their hospitality and warm wel-
come during their time here.

HARMONY DAY Harmony Day highlights and celebrates DIVERSITY by inviting people to explore the cultures, experiences and stories of others. Mandalas have been used for thousands of years as a way to tell stories, by representing the
world and universe through the use of textures, colour and form. They reflect influences found in nature such as flowers, planets, fruits, logs, the sun, the moon, clouds, shadows etc.
Room 28 and 31 came together for Harmony Day to create a shared mandala, as a way of offering a unifying ex-perience where students could express themselves individually while still working within a unified construct.
