Therefore at the beginning of the year it is timely to inform parents that are new to the school and to remind others of the procedures that we have in place all with the purpose of keeping our students safe. Please do not park in the Staff Car Park at any time. This is reserved only for teaching staff, OSHC staff and cleaning/ maintenance staff. As we have staff arriving at all times during the day, it is vital they have parking available. This includes the handicap parks at the side of the school. These spaces are utilised by families and volunteers with handi- cap passes only. Please park thoughtfully when using the 15 minute Preschool parks directly out the front of the Strempel Room. This area fits 4 cars and is intended for the use of Preschool parents who need to sign their children in and out. There is parking available along Balhannah Road and in the streets adjacent to Church Street. You are also welcome to use the carpark behind the Institute in the main street (access via Auricht Rd), cross at the crossing and enter the school via the bridge near the playground. St Michaels Church carpark is private property that we don’t have access to. This time of year we also have new parents and families collecting their children at the “kiss and drop”. The “kiss and drop” area outside the school allows you to stop for two minutes between 3 and 4pm. This two minutes is the time allocated for your child/ren to get in the car. It is not a park and wait time. If you arrive at the school for pick up and the bell hasn’t gone can you please do a lap and not pull into this space. A good guide to know whether you should pull in or not is if you see a staff member (usually myself) outside the gate and children waiting inside the gate. Unfortunately, if one car pulls in early, others follow and we are very quickly congested to the end of the street. Recently Simon has had to spend many nights at the corner of Church St and Balhannah Rd asking cars to do a lap. If you see that cars have reached nearly to the end of Church Street can you please automatically do a lap. A good guide to know whether you need to do a lap is if you are past the “25 When Children Are Present” sign. Significant blockage is occurring on Balhannah Rd as cars from Main Street turning left, can end up blocking the road crossing and cars turning right the other way also blocks traffic waiting for all the cars turning left to clear. This means that Balhannah Rd becomes blocked in both directions. There are occasions when only one staff member is available for this duty so it is important that parents get into the habit of doing a lap independently. A big thank you to the many parents who automatically do this. A good flow of traffic would also allow two staff members to be present with the children and speed up the process of children getting into their cars. Please follow the line of cars. Do not overtake and pull in front of others. This enables the cars already there to move forward in order of arrival and then all traffic is moving in the same way. Another thank you to the parents who arrive after 3:20pm to collect children, this enables time for their child to get out of class and to the gate ready for when they arrive, speeding up the process as well. Please remember your child is safe on school grounds and that a staff member will always stay with your child. We are on duty until 3:30 and the rotunda gives shelter for your child as well. In addition, we request that drivers treat Church Street as a one way street during drop off and pick up. I know this might seem like a lot but it does make pick up more streamlined and ultimately safer for your child, which is our main goal. Please note: School supervision begins at 8.30am. Contact Out of School Hours Care on 8388 7420 if you need to book before school care.

Car Parking / Kiss and drop

In my 25 years of teaching and the numerous schools I have taught at,

car parking and student pick up has always been an issue due to the

large numbers of people arriving at the same time with the same intent.

Therefore at the beginning of the year it is timely to inform parents that

are new to the school and to remind others of the procedures that we

have in place all with the purpose of keeping our students safe.

Please do not park in the Staff Car Park at any time. This is reserved

only for teaching staff, OSHC staff and cleaning/ maintenance staff. As

we have staff arriving at all times during the day, it is vital they have

parking available. This includes the handicap parks at the side of the

school. These spaces are utilised by families and volunteers with handi-

cap passes only.

Please park thoughtfully when using the 15 minute Preschool parks

directly out the front of the Strempel Room. This area fits 4 cars and is

intended for the use of Preschool parents who need to sign their children

in and out.

There is parking available along Balhannah Road and in the streets

adjacent to Church Street. You are also welcome to use the carpark

behind the Institute in the main street (access via Auricht Rd), cross at

the crossing and enter the school via the bridge near the playground. St

This time of year we also have new parents and families collecting their

children at the “kiss and drop”.

The “kiss and drop” area outside the school allows you to stop for two

School Uniforms

Wearing school uniform fosters pride in Hahndorf Primary and Preschool

and provides students with a sense of cohesion and belonging.

Unfortunately, many of our students have started the year not following our

Governing Council approved dress code. At Hahndorf Primary we want to

establish from the beginning an environment that provides belonging. We

want Hahndorf Primary to be a place where students come with the

intention of learning and being part of a community. Part of this is wearing

the school uniform / dress code with pride. Over the next few weeks will be

having a focus on students following Hahndorf Primary’s dress code.

Some of the things we have noticed students wearing:

School jumpers that aren’t school approved

Crazy socks

Very short / tight shorts

Jumpers and tops that when worn are longer than their shorts

Leggings

Makeup/ Jewellery

(please note, leggings worn under shorts or skirts are acceptable)

Please find attached a copy of the school dress code.

Incursions/Excursions

To help parents budget for the cost of their children’s education over the

year we are informing families of the possible structure for incursions and

excursions for 2020. Incursions and excursions are effective learning

experiences for students that complement and enhance the curriculum. I

can remember my school excursions to Marineland and being chosen to

feed Mr Percival. However, they do come at a cost to cover insurances and

the bus. We are looking at the following incursions for the year:

Dancify (five lesson block) $15 (Term 2)

Adelaide Symphony Orchestra $7 TBC

Reptile Show $10 (Term 3)

Life Ed Van $10 (Term 3)

Pool day $8 (Term 4)

Individual class excursions up to $50 TBC

Swimming and camps are on top of this. Some camps are planned for term

4 and although final costs aren’t available we would like to inform parents

now and give them the opportunity to set up payment plans if they would

like. If your child’s class is going on a camp you will be informed shortly

once we are able to confirm booking and we will provide a rough estimate.

You may wish to pay $5 a week or fortnight and by the time of the camp all

that is required is a small amount or even just a signature.

This may seem expensive but if you break it down -

$300 for school fees is $75 a term, $7.50 a week, $1.50 a day.

$100 for excursion/ incursion is $100 a year, $25 a term, $2.50 a week,

25c a day.

From the OSHC Hive….

Just a reminder to all families, that you will

lose your CCS if you have not had a booking with

us for 8 weeks. This means you will have to once

again do a CWA on Xplor and agree to bookings on

MyGov once we receive your booking.

Xplor have updated the parent app which you can

get on your phone enabling you to sign your

child(ren) in & out and access all your account

info.

Mardi’s corner:

Well that’s swimming completed for

another year and now the countdown is on

to Sportfest. We certainly know how to

start the year off with a packed schedule

here at Hahndorf!

Sportfest will be on Friday 6th March in

week 6. As in past years, it will be held at

the Hahndorf Oval on Pine Ave. Tomorrow,

Friday 14th you will receive a lunch order

envelope and a form looking for

volunteers to assist with the smooth

running of the day.

As with any event of this scale, many

hands make light work. Each year we

supply a healthy snack for the students, in

the form of fresh fruit such as

watermelon, apples, oranges, etc. With

the cost of things rising, we’re looking for

a sponsor or two who may be able to

donate fruit, or provide it to us at reduced

rate please. If you, a family member or

friend: works, owns, or is involved in the

fruit industry, and may be able to assist

us, would you mind contacting Jenny in

the Front Office please.

I hope you and your child have had a

successful start to the school year. It was

great to meet a few new faces and some

‘old’ ones at the Acquaintance night on

Tuesday. I look forward to meeting more

of you and getting to know

your children over the coming

year.

2020 Pedal Prix is

underway.

Two 6 hour races

at Victoria Park

and the 24 hour race have been booked and I will be

contacting families via email who registered interest last

year shortly to arrange a team meeting .

There are still places available if you would like to

participate and you didn’t return the form at the end of

Term 1 Week 3 13th February 2020

Both the Blue and Red groups are settling in nicely and there are wonderful relationships being formed between children and educators and amongst the children.

We have begun an ‘All About Me’ unit to help children feel a sense of belonging to our Preschool. We have made creative ‘mini-me’ art pieces that are on display. They spent careful time decorating them and they must be seen! The children have also created art-work about their families so they can share their backgrounds with their friends and educators.

Both groups had a very successful first library visit, the groups enjoyed learning how to find and borrow a book in our school library. We’ve had a fantastic time learning about each other and playing in our new environment together over the past few weeks.
