Preparing for the new NSW K−10 syllabus

The NSW syllabuses for the Australian curriculum website (*DEC Intranet) provides support for schools in implementing the new NSW syllabuses for the Australian curriculum. 2013 CensusAtSchool

CensusAtSchool is a free, fun and easy way for teachers to integrate statistics and probability into the classroom, as well as a practical way to help students understand how a survey works.

Since 2006, over 200 000 students across Australia have completed a CensusAtSchool questionnaire. In 2012, more than 21 000 students input their data.

The 2013 CensusAtSchool questionnaire is now open and will stay open until 19 July. This year, a new question asks students to measure their heart rate as a means to collect continuous numerical data.

International Statistical Literacy Project poster

competition

The Australian Bureau of Statistics is this year sponsoring the Australian phase of the International Statistical Literacy Project (ISLP) poster competition.

The ISLP poster competition is open to students from across the world. The goal of the competition is to improve students’ abilities in describing their environment with the help of statistics. The theme this year is 'Agriculture'.

Targeting Early Numeracy

The Targeted Early Numeracy (TEN) intervention program fulfils a Government commitment to provide support for students experiencing difficulty learning numeracy in the early years of schooling.

TEN was successfully piloted in 2009, and has continued to grow as part of the suite of programs operating under the Best Start initiative.

The program sets clear expectations against the Mathematics K–6 syllabus on what children should be able to do in Number by the end of each school year from Kindergarten to Year 2.

Mathematics Extension 1 professional learning

Due to their office relocation, MANSW has experienced difficulties with its phone and fax service. This interruption was unexpected and beyond their control.

If you have been trying to register for the Mathematics Extension 1 Long Course, MANSW will accept registrations until 11 March.

Please email your registration form to the MANSW office at [email protected].

Further details are on the MANSW website www.mansw.nsw.edu.au.

A blast from the past

In this section of Maths links we revisit your favourite articles from the Curriculum Support publication.

The article in focus in this edition, Numeracy across the curriculum: Choosing and using graphs, was published in the secondary newsletter in Term 1 2007.
