The Debut in Dubai.

From London and New York, to Chicago and on to exciting Las Vegas, the min-eralic wines of the Cantina Terlano have already made it. The next station

of their journey is the opulent Dubai: Since August, the Terlano Sauvignon Blanc “Quarz” and Pinot Noir Riserva “Montigl” have been served in the

sail - shaped Burj Al Arab, the symbol of luxury and unlimited wealth.

Cantina Terlano is en route all over the world every year with the mis-sion of presenting their wines and familiar vintages to importers and high end clients. “When you receive an offer like the one from the luxury 7 star Hotel Burj Al Arab, you are all the more delighted. It´s a honour not everybody has” says Klaus Gasser, sales and marketing director at Cantina Terlano, who is increasingly orienting his sales strategy towards the international market.

Its impressive track record clearly demonstrates that this strat-egy has been working: Only ten years ago, Cantina Terlano had hardly any export. Today, they ship ten percent of their wines to Germany, while seven to eight percent of their production heads to the U.S. But in the U.K., Japan, S. Korea, Thailand, Australia, the Ukraine, Russia, and Poland, too, the demand for the long-lived Terlano wines is growing.

From the elite of London and the nouveau rich in Russia to the New York jet-set, they all know and appreciate the elegance and the freshness of the Terlano wines. In view of these con-siderations, it’s to be expected that the discriminating sheiks of the Middle East will likewise succumb to their charms.

A Quick Historical Overview10 Years of Porphyr

Time is the last, true luxury of our days. It rushes past us quietly and invisibly, an ephemeral and costly good which, once gone, can never be retrieved. And yet, a fine wine can succeed in capturing this precious commod-ity and preserving it for later enjoyment. And if, like the Terlano Lagrein Porphyr, it also manages to increase in elegance and harmony with every passing year, then the true connoisseur can be sure that he has come upon a re-ally great wine that has succeeded in unlocking the secret of time.

Thus, it’s no wonder that there had been enormous inter-est in an oenological journey through time to explore the ten-year history of this outstanding varietal. In Novem-ber of last year, in the course of the Merano Wine Festival, the Terlano Lagrein Porphyr was given an opportunity to tell its story. In the context of the vertical tasting con-ducted at the Hotel Terme Merano, the Terlano Lagrein Porphyr – whose robust body and great long-lasting qual-ities can be attributed to the rich volcanic soil it’s named after – revealed the secret of its success: It lets time work for it. Vintages from 1997 through to 2006 were tasted and compared, and they all displayed the characteristic full-bodied and satiny flavors as well as complex structure their fame is built on. Further, they demonstrated the in-teresting and impressive development which the Lagrein Porphyr has gone through during this time period.

The 2010 wine yearSmall Yields and Superlative Wines

Because of the dry and cold winter and a similar spring, in the Terlano vineyards, the vegetation pe-riod began considerably later than in previous years. After a relatively mild April, there followed a moder-ately warm and rainy May. The month of June was pleasant, while July proved extremely dry and char-acterized by record heat. As a result of this unusual weather pattern, many varieties responded with the growth of loose grapes bearing small berries. Addi-tionally already in July, exceptionally vigorous woody growth has been apparent – an indication of a prom-ising year. The weather conditions during the maturation period

were variable; as a consequence of the very low yield, the maturation process nevertheless proceeded at a brisk pace, making it possible to harvest very healthy and fully ripe grapes. On September 6, 2010, the grape harvest began in Terlano, ending on October 15, 2010 with the Cabernet grape harvest. All in all, the year 2010 produced one of the lowest yields of the last 20 years – yet the resultant wines were any-thing but a disappointment, with outstanding flavor and quality: Due to their slightly elevated acid con-tent, the white wines display special freshness and a variety of aromas. They are robust, creamy, very juicy, and eminently drinkable. The red wines, too, promise to be a good vintage. For the most part, they present intensive colors, a harmonious mixture of mature tannins, and a satiny structure.

The 2011 Vini d’Italia - Gambero Rosso“Especially the white wines of Cantina Terlano have attained worldwide renown and popularity – that’s due to their almost legendary long life and smooth aging. (...) We’ve never tired of repeating: By vir-tue of their complexity and durability, these white wines are among the world’s best. As every year, nu-merous wines from the Cantina Terlano have made it to the final round, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to decide which of them deserves to be awarded the “Three Glasses.”

The 2011 D’Agata & Comparini - VIN“The Quarz is a great wine – one of the best Sauvi-gnon Blancs of all Italy. And the Porphyr Lagrein Riserva is one of the most outstanding of them all.”

The 2010 Falstaff Wine Guide“Cantina Terlano always markets its selections a lit-tle later than most others. The Quarz Sauvignon, the Lunare Gewürztraminer, and the Vorberg Pinot Bianco Riserva demonstrate that it was entirely right to not prematurely introduce them to the market.

The 2011 I Vini di Veronelli“The white wines of Cantina Terlano are known and prized among connoisseurs for their extraordi-nary long life. Cantina Terlano has a complete col-lection of all vintages from 1955 to today; the oldest bottles date back to their founding year.”

The 2011 Duemilavini“A Terlano tradition appreciated by connoisseurs is to release for sale rare vintages from their cellars. This year, it is the 1996 Chardonnay: A wonder-ful example of character and long-lasting strength which the Terlano terrain bestow upon its wines.”

The 2011 Vinibuoni d’Italia“Let’s start with the great 2008 Lunare Gewürz-traminer. It’s a glorious and yet very accessible and enjoyable wine. (...) The 2007 Gries Lagrein Riserva – Golden Star – too, is also excellent, with a full-bodied, complex, and aristocratic character. An-other two masterpieces (what a difficult decision!) are the 2009 Lagrein – a true varietal, strong and masculine – and the 2009 Santa Maddalena Häu-sler, which displays elegance and delicious almond notes in the finish.”

The 2011 I Vini d’Italia – Le Guide de L’espresso“The grades which we have awarded to the Terlano wines speak for themselves. And they also again prove that the prestigious ‘Three Stars’ which we awarded to them years ago were well deserved.”
