The Ancestral Villages of the Schindler, Latzel and Tagel lines

The Schindlers, Latzels and Tagels came from a German settled area called the Sudetenland which today is in the northeastern Czech Republic. This was then in Moravia part of the Austrian Empire.

The old villages of Girsig, Deutsch-Haus, Herzogsdorf , Weigelsdorf, and Bärhn were all very closely located in the Austrian province of Moravia (in German: Mähren) until 1918 when it became Czechoslovakia. Our remaining German ancestors and cousins would be removed from this area following World War II when the Czechs expelled over 3 million Sudeten Germans.

The Schindlers were in Deutsch-Haus, Tagels in Herzogsdorf and Latzels were in Girsig

3 Ancestral Villages.

The distance between Girsig and Herzogsdor in about 1.5 miles. Today Girsig is called Jirikov and Deutsch-Haus is called Huzova and Herzogsdorf is called Knezpole and Bärhn is called Moravský Beroun. These tiny villages are within a couple miles of each other and were in the German settled area called Sudetenland. Note: There are at least 2 towns named Herzogsdorf in pre World War II Austria but only 1 was in Moravia now the Czech Republic near Girsig or Jirikov and DeutschHaus or Huzova. The other Herzogsdorf is near Linz in modern Austria and is NOT the Tagel home village.

DWS: From Josephine Schindler Rotert papers. The author is possibly Keith Gibson or Josephine Schindler Rotert. "A love of the land was traditional of the Schindler families. A tract of land in Austria was purchased from George Hasche in 1804 by Florian Schindler who lived from 1752 to 1827. It was transferred to Johann Schindler 1802-1859. When it was transferred to Konstant Schindler who was born in 1842 and died in 1876. He was married to Antonia Bock Feb. 17, 1862. This young couple engaged in farming that tract of land. It was here their children were born - 3 girls and 2 boys. Konstant, the father died at the age of 34. His widow and children found the struggle for survival too great in their homeland. They set their hopes on the bright new land, America. .. ************************************ DWS: From a photocopied letter in Josephine Schindler Rotert materials: This letter was from Gertrude Schindler (born 1923) living in Vienna, Austria. (Gertrude’s grandfather was Joseph Schindler 1840 a brother to our Konstantin 1842) "The house of birth of Konstantin, Joseph and Franziska, No 168 in Deutsch-hause (AUSTRIA) burned down in 1895 or 1896. There remained only the old reserved house which stood beside the house of Joseph Schindler's No. 171 in Deutsch-hause. Joseph managed the estate of Anotina Bock Schindler until 1908, when the estate was sold in the name of American relatives to John Klos. Konstant, whose widow went to America, died rather young and very suddenly. He had a lawsuit. He frequently went to Sternberg to the lawyer, caught pneumonia and died from it. (NOTE: They thought he drank poisoned stream water in a different letter.) His widow Antonia, had taken a dislike for the life in this country so she and her mother, Josephine Bock and Antonia's 5 children, Amalia 17, Ferdinand 13, Antonia 11, Sophia 7, Joseph 5, sailed to America. Joseph was the father of 5 children. All remained single except Konstant who married Antonia Blumreisinger of Vienna, where he was an officer of criminal police. They had one daughter, Gertrude Schindler who married Joseph Ruzicka who has an art store in Vienna. Gertrude is an official in surveying. When her American relatives of the Konstant Schindler line visited her in Vienna, Austria, namely Father Frederic Schindler, great grandson also Ann and Judy Kerkman, great granddaughters, she related this story. "I am not surprised that you did not find relatives in Deutschhause. The village in 1946 was evacuated. My two surviving relatives came to Wyrttemberg where they all died. They bore the loss of their homeland very hard. They were already old when they had to leave. My mother was also of Vienna. I Gertrude was born in Vienna but I was always in Deutschhause during vacation and it was for me like a second home. Since the end of the war (May 7, 1945) I have not been there. I do not know why I should return. The recollections would be too sad." ************************** She also wrote the following: Translation written to Fr. Frederick from Gertrude. (Gertrude the last living Schindler in Vienna) "Vienna, April 26, 1967 Dear Frederic! Please pardon me that I have not answered your letter before today. I would still like to make some inquiring in Germany in order to give you certificates of the Baptism and Marriage of your grandparents. I am happy that in America there are so many Schindlers, as you can see from the list, I am the last of the family here. Konstantin Schindler, whose widow went to America, was the last older brother of my grandfather. My aunt often explained to me his sad history. He died rather young and very suddenly. He had a lawsuit. He had always to go to Sternberg to the lawyer, and because of this he caught pneumonia and died from it. His widow had taken a dislike for the life in the country so she left the country with her children. It grieves me much that only now I have first heard from you: my uncle Florian died in the first part of the year 1956, who knew all, even the details.

The house of Birth, Deutschhause Number 168, burned down in 1895 or 1896. There remained only the old reserved house which stood beside the house of any grandfather's, Deutschhause No.171. My grandfather managed the estate of his sister-in-law until 1908. Then the estate was sold in the name of the American relatives to John Klos. I am not surprised that you did riot meet anybody in Deutschhause. The village in 1946 was evacuated, The surviving relatives came to Wurttenberg, where they also died. They bore the loss of their home land very hard. They were already old when they had to leave. My father, Konstantin Schindler, went in his youth to Vienna. I myself was born in Vienna, but I was always in Deutschhause during vacations and it was for me like a second home. Since the end of the war I have not been there. I do not know why I should return. I am happy that I could find your address. I asked Mr. Englisch, with whom last year I corresponded about the Schindler origins, and I asked him for your address, but I did not hear any more from him. I was born in 1923 and I am an official of Surveying. I write German but my knowledge of English is very megre. I hope that you can read my letter. I would be happy if I have helped you with your request. Hearty greeting to you and to all the Schindlers in America, from the last living Schindler in Vienna. ( Signed ) Gertrude I just noticed when re-reading what I wrote that I have forgotten my husband's name. His name is Joseph Ruzicka and has in Vienna an Art Store. ******************* letter from Gertrude Schindler: "Vienna; Austria July 7, 1967 Dear Father Frederic: Thank you very much for your letter of May 24, 1967, for the pictures and for the dollar. Pardon me for not having answered until today, but we have been gone on leave for four weeks in Jugoslavia, and your letter reached me only a few days ago. Unfortunately I am unable to add to the statements or to add to the information which I sent you earlier, but I am writing at once to one of our former neighbors, who may perhaps be able to furnish you with additional information. I am giving him your address and perhaps he will write to you directly. His name is John Klos, 7257 Ditzingen / Stuttgart, Antenstr.2 Deutschland. Mr. Klos was a very close friend of my younger uncle, Edward, and he spent a great deal of time in the home of my grandfather, and it is certain that be would have various items of information. Unfortunately I cannot send you the requested documents (certificates). The only reason that I happen to have the documents for my great grandparents is the fact that under Hitler we were all required to furnish documentation of our Arian origin, and this followed only the direct lineal line, that is - father, - grandfather, - great-grandfather,. etc, The brother of my grandfather was not mentioned in any of these documents. If you had inquired of us about these matters before the year 1938, it would have been an easy matter to obtain all this information, as at that time all of the ecclesiastical records, were still intact. I do not know to what extent the church records were destroyed in Deutschhause. At the time when the Widow of Constantine Schindler went to America, people did not bother much about such documents, and it is almost certain that she took none of them with her. I know the house of the Bocks very well. I always visited there gladly with my parents, for Mrs. Bock was a famous cook. I am not sure that I could find my way around in Deutschhause now. The house I would certainly recognize, but the farm and the woods of the Schindlers probably do not exist any longer. How would it look there now? What are the streets like? Very probably nothing would be left or the cemetery. It was a heartbreaking experience for my relatives to find that they could not be buried there where their parents, and their grandparents had been laid to rest. Dear Father Frederic, I do hope that we will be able to obtain a good deal of information through Mr. Klos, and I remain greetings to you and to your father.

Trudi (Gertrude) Rusicka (I hope soon to be able to send you some views and snapshots from Deutschhause). P.S. Hasn't Austria the most beautiful stamps?" *********************** DWS: From a letter from Father Frederic Schindler's collection: Copied SIC by the author: Note: “The following letter (translation) was written to Father Frederic Schindler by a certain Johann Klos, now deceased, in 1972. Johann was about 80 years old when Father Frederick visited him. Johann's home was in Deutschhauser in the Sudetenland, the same village from which the Schindlers originated. Johann had heard his father and grand father speak of the Schindlers when he was a young boy. Johann was living as a refugee in Ditzingen, a small village near the city if Stuttgart, Germany, at the time of Fr. Frederic's visit. Letter: ‘7257 Ditzingen July 27, 1972 Herrn Frederic Schindler: Even if you are a "Ur" (true) American today, I feel that you remember the homeland of your forefathers, and that you are interested to learn about their destiny and misfortune. We, who were forced to leave our home, feel obligated to tell the coming generations about our beloved homeland, so that in their hearts it will be unforgettable to them also. Years ago I heard that a Schindler descendant (Fred Schindler and Fr. Frederic in 1966) had traveled to the CSSR to visit the birthplace of his ancestors, but the character and the face of the country have completely changed from what it was when the Germans left it. And so it is questionable whether your expectations were fulfilled. The farm building of the Schindlers, No. 168, burned down around 1895 and was not rebuilt - "das Auszugs - or Ausgedinghaus," which I thoroughly renovated in the last years, has probably been blown up, like just about everything else. But as visitors told me a few years ago, it seems that the Schindler barn "Scheuer" was still standing. It was situated right at the beginning of the field, about 200 steps from house No. 168a, and so the field Schindler should be easy to find. I didn't know the family Konstantin Schindler myself, because I was born in 1891, and the widow Schindler emigrated in the '80s (1879 is the actual year). But my father and grandfather of house No. 170, as house and field neighbors, grew up with the family Schindler and were very good friends. So they told me often about the destiny and sorrow the Schindler family had to suffer, which I will never forget. A dispute about the boundaries with the field - and almost houseneighbor had been fought in court for a long time already over a few forkfulls of grass. It led to bitterness, and so at haying time there was another trial in Sternberg, 12 kilometers away. But Schindler was a very hard working man. On this day he went out like usual to mow the meadows at 2 a.m. and went from there directly through the woods to Sternberg. And when he came home he was dangerously ill - so said my father - he was completely disfigured, the mouth open as wide as possible, the tongue hanging out like a piece of wood and swollen as big as an arm. He could hardly talk anymore. All that could be understood was that on his way he came to a spring. And since he was tired and thirsty, he lay down and drank. In two days he was dead. It was suspected that maybe a poisonous animal had bathed in the spring and put out its poison when it was startled by the man. In any event he died of total poisoning. And so Mrs. Schindler stopped the trial to her disadvantage, but in spite of sorrow and defeat, she couldn't find peace. On the contrary, the winner (of the court trial) made her life harder yet. And so this darling woman decided to look around in America. She left her children here and rented out her land for one year. She went alone to the new world to see where she could find a new home in peace and quiet. After almost one year she came back with a definite plan and she arranged everything

without selling the land and took her children. It must have been about 5 of them, the oldest about 12 or 13 years of age. These are my memories. I believe that at the present time I am probably the only one who still knows something about the Schindler family. I also knew the old mother Schindler, who lived on No. 171 and died about 1895. And so as once the ancestors had grown up with the Schindler family, so also we younger ones grew up with the Joseph Schindler family - the Schindler Loisi and my sister, both born in 1881, Schindler Konstantin and my brother, both born in 1884, and myself and Schindler Eduard born in 1891 - and so we grew up in good neighborly friendship. I believe it was in 1909 (rented out 30 years) when Joseph Schindler received the authority to sell the american property in Deutschhause against cash. The fields were in bad shape, because they had been rented out for so long and the buildings were ready to fall down. But my father who was not afraid of any work, bought it and so we farmed the three fields that were sided by side, No. 3, No. 170 and no. 168, a total of 43 hectors (about 107 acres) with the house No. 3. This may be little compared to the USA, but here it was a nice large property and the largest of Deutschhause. Most average people had 15 - 20 hectors. Anyway, the Schindler family had cherry trees for a hobby. There were over 100 on the field No. 168, at one time about 180. They grew along the road and also in the crossrows. We cleared them all out. A cousin Schindler on No. 122 had also had the outer edges of the fields full of cherry trees. As you (Fr. Frederic) could see on your visit here, this letter was already prepared to be sent and I only held it back because of the pictures. So I will add to it: Deutschhause was made a town in the 13 century. It had an extremely beautiful "Ringplatz" (town square) with gardens. I have only 2 pictures of this square "Ringplatz". Deutschhause had 300 housenumbers and between 13 and 14 hundred inhabitants. Four families of mixmarriages with Czech men stayed back in 1946. Among them one of your relatives, because her mother was a born Schindler, No. 122, who could have (or did?) given you some information. After the death of her Czech husband, she came to West Germany 3 years ago of her own will, 80 years old. I would like to know if my memories are identical with yours and seem credible to you. And in which year did Konstantin Schindler die? (1 Aug. 1876) And in which year did she emigrate? (1879) And so I greet you signed Johann Klos P.S. Should you have anymore questions, I will gladly answer them."

DWS: From Josephine Schindler Rotert papers: The author is possibly Keith Gibson or Josephine Schindler Rotert. “ Life always has been and always will be the most discussed subject on earth. What predicament in which we find ourselves. We know not whence we came; we don't know where we are; we don't know whither we are bound. It is hard to come here, hard to remain and sometimes very hard to get away. It eases our predicament to become informed through family records. To report birth, death and marriages in life - the foundation of the superstructure. What is more important in the orderly march of the generations - the perpetuation of life than marriages? Upon those serious commitments depend the strength of the home, church and the school. All three have their impact on the life of our country. Our country honors and shows a deep respect for those left their homeland to make a new life in a new place. A love of the land was traditional of the Schindler families. On Sept. 9 1880, the family - Antonia Bock Schindler 40; her mother, Josephine Bock 60; 5 children - Amalia 17; Ferdinand 12; Antonia 10; Sophia 8; Joseph 5 left Hamburg, Germany sailed to Leith Scotland aboard the English Steamship 'North Star' and traveled overland to Glasgow, where they boarded the S.S. Anchoria as steerage passengers and arrived in New York Oct. 11, 1880 after traveling almost one month. An American relative of Antonia Bock Schindler had written glowingly of the rich farm land in the area of Columbus, Nebr. It was here where the family temporarily settled. The older children worked in the homes of early settlers following the pattern of family life of those days, very hard work and no conveniences. April 22 1882 the young widow filed a declaration of intent to become a citizen before the District Court sitting in and for Platte County Nebr. In this declaration she stated that she was a citizen of Austria and that she was 40 years of age and the mother of 5 children. She also stated that her husband Konstant died in 1876 in Austria. In 1885, land in the area of Columbus Nebr was costing around $10 per acre. Antonia and family having little or no money joined other pioneer families in their trek to the northwest where land could be acquired by homesteading. One such family Karl and Victoria Kracher had three daughters. At the turn of the century, Rose Kracher married Antonia Schindler's youngest son, Joseph who also died young leaving his widow and two children surviving him. The descendants of Joseph and Rosa Schindler, also the descendants of Ferdinand and Elizabeth Schindler carry on the family name. They were the parents of 13 children. This desire to have the human name preserved linked with the desire to be remembered, that our dust shall retain the tender regard of those whom we leave behind - has been one of the most potent forces in the history of men. ‘Tis said it created literature; architecture and the art of war; it built pyramids and started the crusades. Could it be it prompted our forebears to penetrate and people America? Their farms could very well be their toms of remembrance. All of the widow Antonia Schindler's children had land holdings. All except Amalia Randall, the oldest daughter, are buried in the Miller cemetery; now known as St. Anthony's cemetery southwest of Ewing Nebr. Members of 5 generations of Schindlers are buried there. Since we can but speculate upon our forebear’s motive for coming to America, we assume it was the traditional love of the land. More details of the family's first homestead were revealed upon searching family records of the General Land Office, National archives and Record Service Washington D.C. which show that cash certificate 5456 Neligh, Nebr as issued to Antonia Schindler for the W 1/2 of NE 1/4 and E 1/2 of NW 1/4 of Sec. 27 Township 25 North Range 10 West.

On May 22, 1885 Konstant Schindler's widow and five children and also her mother, Josephine Bock, settled on the land, constructing a sod house, stable and other outbuildings and cultivating 27 acres of land. ***************************************** From "Before Today, a History of Holt County Nebraska" by Nellie Snyder Yost and the Holt county Historical Society. 1976 pages 175-176 with picture. "Since the most desirable homesteads, near town, were taken by the earliest settlers, later comers had to take claims farther out. Among these were two widows who homesteaded fourteen miles southwest of Ewing. With their children they came from Deutsch-hause in eastern Czechoslovakia in 1880. (Sudetenland) In September Josefa Bock, aged sixty, the widow of Josef Bock, and her daughter Antonia Schindler, aged forty, widow of Konstant Schindler, with the five Schindler children, aged five to seventeen, left their peasant holding to journey to Hamburg, Germany. There they took ship to Leith, Scotland. From Leith they traveled overland to Glasgow where they boarded the steamship Anchoria for New York and debarked on October 11. They came on by train to Columbus, NE, the home of Josefa's other daughter, Mrs. Richard (Maria) Rosner. Following a short stay in Columbus they came on to Neligh where Antonia worked in a cafe and her children went to school. The two women immediately applied for citizenship and, the next year, Antonia filed on her Holt County timber claim. Josefa filed on an adjoining quarter and each of Antonia's children, as they came of age filed for themselves. As rapidly as they could these enterprising homesteaders bought additional land and, in time, the seven immigrants owned considerable land in the area. The five young Schindlers all married in the neighborhood and lived there into the 1900's. Three Schindlers today still live south of Ewing." ************************************************** From "Elgin, NE Centennial 1889-1989": PAGE 416 "KONSTANTINE SCHINDLER FAMILY Konstantine Schindler died young at the age of 34 years. After her husband's death, Antonia, then 39, had taken a dislike for the life in Europe, and decided to look around in America. (...Submitted by Rudina (Schindler) Lautenschlager) ************************************************** HOMESTEADING From "Keya Paha Co, NE 100 Years 1885-1985 978.262 H673 page 12: "The great movement of settlers was helped by the changes in the land laws. A settler in 1854 could take 160 acres and, after living on it six months, could buy it from the United States for $1.25 and acre. In 1863, the Homestead Law had gone into effect. This act made it possible for a settler to take 160 acres and have it free by living upon it for five years. In 1873 the Timber Claim Act was passed. Under the terms of this act , one could get 160 acres by planting ten acres of it to trees, and taking care of them for eight years. All three of these laws were in force from 1873-1891, and under them a settler could get 480 acres of land in a few years. The Kinkaid law went into effect in 1904. This act was passed mainly for settlement of the sandhill area of our state. This act allowed the settlers 640 acres of land because the usual 160 acres would not support a family." ************************************************** DWS: From Mary Alice Funk Dwyer Thramer History book June 1984 " Also living with J.K. and Antonia (Thramer) was Antonia's mother, Grandma Antonia. She was bed-fast and went to live with her son, Fred Schindler shortly before J.K. and Antonia left for Texas. Before they left she caught pneumonia and died." DWS: Note: ‘Fred’ would have been Ferdinand Schindler 1867 a brother to Antonia Thramer. ********************

Coming to America

'Concerning the Schindlers trip to the United States I have found that Josefa Boch 60, Antonia Schindler 40, and children Amalia 17, Ferdinand 12, Antonia 10, Sophia 8, and Joseph 5, left Hamburg Germany Sept. 9, 1880. Then to Leith, Scotland they boarded the English Steamship "North Star". From Leith they traveled overland to Glasgow. They then boarded the S.S. Anchoria as steerage passengers and arrived in New York Oct. 11, 1880.'

From: Josephine Schindler Rotert and Rudina (Dena Schindler) Lautenschlager papers: probably from Keith Gibson's original work.

The stops along the way leaving Europe.

Their ship: 'Anchoria' Anchor Line steamship built 1875 at Barrow by Barrow Shipbuilding Co. The Anchoria sailed with emigrants

and other passengers mainly between Glasgow and New York. “They came by train to Columbus, NE, to the home of Josefa (Langer) Bock's other daughter, Mrs. Richard (Marie) Rosner. Following a short stay in Columbus and since the most desirable homesteads, near town, were taken by the earlier settlers, later comers had to take claims farther out. So, they came on to Neligh, where Antonia worked in a cafe and her children went to school. On April 22, 1881, Antonia Schindler filed a declaration of intent to become a citizen before the District Court. She stated that she was 40 years of age. On Dec. 7, 1885, Antonia, age 45, filed on her Holt County timber claim for the West 1/2 of NE 1/4 and E 1/2 of NW 1/4 of Section 27, Township 25 North, Range 10 West. Josefa filed on an adjoining quarter. Antonia Schindler settled on the land on May 22, 1885, constructing a sod house, stable and other out buildings, and cultivating 27 acres of land. Each of Antonia's children, as they came of age filed for themselves. As rapidly as they could, these enterprising homesteaders bought additional land, and in time, the seven immigrants owned considerable land in the area. The five young Schindlers all married in the neighborhood and lived there into the 1900's. Amalia (Mollie) married Albert Randall, and they had seven children. Antonia married Joe Thramer. Sophia married Mike Tomjack. Joseph married Rose Craker, and they had three children." (...Submitted by Rudina (Schindler) Lautenschlager)
