“SET APART”

In today’s readings we learn of two widows who have lost their sons, and who God miraculously restores to life out of love for their mothers, thereby enabling them to continue their own life mission. Life is precious, all life. St. Paul tells us that he “was set apart in his mother’s womb, called by God through grace to

proclaim Jesus”. Your life is also precious to our Lord, from the time of your conception to the time of your death you have a mission assigned to you by God. Have you ever pondered “why am I here?” St. Paul pondered that question for three years after which he tells us “the gospel preached by me is not of human

origin but came through a revelation of Jesus Christ.” St. Paul found his answer: he was to preach and serve Christ. In today’s gospel Jesus spoke and His words returned life to the dead. Jesus is speaking to you every Sunday at every Mass. Jesus is giving you the bread of life from heaven at every Mass. Why? Jesus longs to give you spiritual life. You are so special, set apart by God in your mother’s womb to be bearers of the ‘word’, hope for the hopeless and a light in the darkness. You have the power to turn mourning into dancing by speaking the love and mercy of Christ to all those around you; for this, you also have been set apart. Do you know someone who would like to become Catholic or complete their Sacraments of Initiation? For more information call Msgr. Carroll, 973-838-6838 x100 or Carol Mangani at 973-283-2218.

First Reading: 1 Kings 17:17-24 The child of the mistress of the house where Elijah sojourned became ill and died. The woman pleaded with Elijah who took the son and prayed over him. When the child revived Elijah returned him to his mother who recognized Elijah as "a man of God."

Second Reading: Galatians 1:11-19 Paul proclaims the gospel, not as human, but coming from the revelation of Jesus Christ. Paul continues to acknowledge his own sinfulness and call to grace.

Gospel: Luke 7:11-17 The gospel continues to recount the miracles and healing powers of Jesus. As Jesus neared the gates to the city of Nain, they came upon a deceased young man who was being carried out of the city. His mother, a widow, and a large crowd accompanying the body, met Jesus on the way. Compassionately, Jesus comforts the weeping mother and restores life to the dead man.

Fifty Years…

On a rainy, humid Saturday morning, May 28, 1966, Bishop Lawrence B. Casey ordained me a priest of the Diocese of Paterson, NJ. The next day in St. Anthony’s Church, Hawthorne, I celebrated a Solemn High Mass, which was followed by dinner at the Brownstone with 500 or so of Mother and Dad’s closest relatives and friends.

My first assignment was as an assistant priest at St. John’s Cathedral, Paterson. It was the best assignment for a newly ordained priest to get. It had a high school and an elementary school and we were expected to teach there every day. Our duties also included St. Joseph Hospital, St. Joseph Orphanage, the Passaic County Jail and a home for single women. I was also appointed Chaplain to the Paterson Division of Seton Hall University. What a way to start!

My next assignments were in Catholic Education as assistant and then Superintendent of Catholic Schools. I met some wonderful religious, priests and lay people during those years whose dedication and desire to “teach as Jesus taught” really impressed me. They helped to shape me for my future as a Vatican II Pastor.

While still in education, I was assigned by Bishop Casey as an Assistant Pastor of Our Lady of Pompeii in Paterson, a mostly Italian congregation whose support and encouragement I will never forget. While I was there I met a friend of a parishioner who owned a sailboat. He took me sailing on Raritan Bay and I was “hooked.” I bought my first sail boat from Ivan Pedersen who was the Commodore of the Keyport Yacht Club and who in 1978, sponsored me to become a member. Some members are here celebrating with us today.

In 1982, Bishop Frank J. Rodimer gave me my first pastorate at St. Patrick’s, Chatham. In my parting homily at Pompeii I told the parishioners, “I know how to get along with the Italians but I am not too sure about those Irishmen”. How wrong I was! The parish was trying to renovate the Church on a shoestring and I was instructed to get the job done. By now I had learned that the best way to accomplish tasks is to assemble a committee and listen. The job got done and so did so many others. I really loved those parishioners.

One evening during dinner, Bishop Rodimer called and said he wanted me to move to Kinnelon to succeed the renowned Msgr. John Ryan who was retiring. Bishop gave me an unheard of amount of time, almost ten days, to think about it-and he called every day looking for an answer. Against my better judgment but leaving it up to God, I finally said “yes” and headed to Kinnelon.

When I arrived on June 1, 1991, there was no fanfare, just an obscure reference to the “new priests” in the parish bulletin. Passing an overgrown front lawn, Fr. Mark Condon and I found the front door unlocked but nobody was home. Aided by some parishioners from Chatham we began to unpack and get to work. While we were on our hands and knees cleaning, a lady paid us a visit, said her name was Eileen, I believe she brought us a plant. I remember her skinny legs. It took time but we turned our new rectory into a home. I had no idea then that I would spend the second 25 years of priesthood in Our Lady of the Magnificat parish. During those many years under God’s direction and inspiration much was accomplished by working and worshipping together.

Our current Bishop, Arthur J. Serratelli, has not appointed me to anything which required a change of location so far. He did, however, send me on a sabbatical to Guest House in Michigan for 3 months for which I will always be grateful. Fr. Ed Lambro, the entire Staff and the Holy Spirit kept the ship moving forward and I shall never forget it.

Talking about staff reminds me to thank from the bottom of my heart all those dedicated men and women with whom I worked closely during these 50 years. I would never have survived without their input, direction and leadership. I am especially grateful to the Staff of OLM both past and present whose dedication to the Body of Christ, the Church, never ceases to amaze me. I would have retired years ago were it not for them.

Finally, thank you to those who made this celebration today so inspiring. It took a lot of work to make it happen and you parishioners know who I am talking about. Thank you to so many others who have inspired me to stay in ministry these many years. May Our Lady of the Magnificat pray for us.

In Jesus’s Name,
