FOREWORD

The Tenth Texas General marks a decade in an effort an the part of the

sponsoring mu seums to give a substantial backing ta the 'a rt ists of the state, a s well

a s to br ing th e ir wor ks to th e attent ion of the public, not forgett ing that agenci es,

such a s th e Texa s Fine Arts Assoc iation and other s ha ve wor ked for many years

toward the sa me goal. Th e d ifference in the Texas General is that it is dist inctly a

mu seum show, being at pre sent conf ined to the three major mu seums in the sta te

wher e each shows it in its ent ire ty .

Of particular note is the fact that Indust ry has taken a sta nd toward th e

support of th e best in contemporary art in Texa s; that Texa s Industriali st s have risen

to uphold th e effo rts of mu seums and a ssociations for th e promoti on of th e pla st ic

a rts, and th e c rea t ive art ist s is sign if ica nt . A co mpa riso n with list s o f a words in the

f irst yea rs of th e compet it ion a ttests to th e gr owth of appreciation, not only by com ­

merc ia l a gencies but by indiv iduals, whos e a wards aff irm th e ir fai th in th e arti st s of

toda y. Texa s ha s already ente red th e natianal ma el strom of co ntempor a ry a rt , and

th e pu rch a se prizes are add ing wo rks by imp ortant a rti sts to museum call ect ion s.

Th is yea r sh.ows th e larg est number of entries of all pr eced ing yea rs; ou t of

613 ent ries by 384 art ists, 123 wor ks were ch osen with 103 arti st s represented . Th e

se lect ion was made with th e view of ex h ibiti ng all trends in art a s represented by th e

artis t s subm itti ng- rea lism in many forms, prim iti vism, surea lism and abst ra ct ion ,

be spe aking our age of div er se idea log ies.
