Tense denotes the time of the action indicated by a verb. The time is not always the same as that indicated by the name of the tense.

Objectives

By the end of the lesson you will be able : to identify different tenses. to know the kinds of tenses to know structures of sentences in different tenses.

One thing happened before and was in process at a particular time in the past, and it continued.

Ex: I was doing my homework.

was typing + leaving were working (verb + ing)

Past perfect tense expresses action completed before certain time in the past. (This is the before-past tense.)

It uses the helping verb had and the past participle of the verb.

Example: She had written the letter before I saw her.

Structure: Subject + (had) + been + Verb + ing + Object.

She had been reading a novel when I went to meet her.
