Our thanks to

youDear Supporter,

Welcome to our annual Supporter Review. It’s our chance to let you, and all our other supporters know what we’ve achieved in the last year and the diff erence you have helped us to make to cancer patients and their loved ones.

As usual it’s been a busy twelve months. We’ve launched new services, funded new research, raised awareness and campaigned for change. We’ve worked hard to make sure we reach the people and the communities that need us most, through our cancer support services and cancer prevention work. We’re funding more research than ever before, and have focused on the issues that aff ect families living with cancer every day.

But we couldn’t do any of this without your support. Your generosity, hard work, time and commitment is what’s made this all possible. Last year you helped us raise over £9 million to support cancer patients and their loved ones in communities like yours. And we simply couldn’t have done it without you.

Thank you,

Claudia McVieChief Executive

This year we were able to save 1,319 people, 3,673 trips to hospital by offering them treatment on board our Mobile Support Units.

Because of you, we’ve made life miles better

meetDebbie and Rory

“I was diagnosed in April 2014 when my son Rory was just two years old. It was breast cancer. As a single mum it was terrifying.

I had a mastectomy, then four months of chemo, which I was lucky enough to have on the Tenovus Cancer Care Mobile Support Unit. It’s a lovely, friendly, professional environment that I can get to quickly and easily, and not wait long for my treatment. An absolute godsend when Rory needs to come with me. It’s a comfortable and intimate space where you’re known as a person, not just a patient.”

Seeing familiar faces every visit is so comforting.

Because of you, we’re giving hope for the future

meetEllyn, one of our cancer researchers

Ellyn is a PhD student at Cardiff University who is looking at how a person’s own immune system can be used to treat cancers that have spread to other parts of the body.

I’m looking at trying to manipulate the body’s immune

system by reducing the numbers of a particular cell that ‘switches off’ the

immune response, allowing the body to fight the cancer from within. This is a step in the right direction to begin to move away from chemotherapy drugs, which can often have terrible side effects.

As well as being one of our researchers, Ellyn volunteers at our fundraising events.

This year we’ve spent around £1 million on cancer research. As well as continuing to fund our existing projects, we’ve confirmed funding of ten new PhD studentships and nine new Innovation Grants. This research is looking at the most common cancers, including breast, prostate, bowel and lung. We want a future without cancer and thanks to you, we’re getting closer every day.

A Gift in your Will could change the future of cancer

tenovuscancercare.org.uk

Tenovus Cancer Care funds world leading scientists in universities all across the country. They’re looking to discover the next breakthrough in cancer care, treatment, prevention and ultimately, a cure.

By leaving a gift to Tenovus Cancer Care in your Will, you could be leaving families in your community the gift of world-class research, care, advice and support, wherever and whenever they need it most.

Make or update your Will for freeMaking a Will doesn’t have to be expensive. But it is important to make one, and gives you peace of mind to know your affairs are all in order. A Will means you can decide what happens after you’ve gone and make sure your loved ones are taken care of. It also lets everyone know what charities you would like to support.

Tenovus Cancer Care is part of the National Free Wills Network – which means we can offer our supporters, aged 55 and over, a limited number of free Wills through local participating solicitors.

And whilst there’s no obligation to leave a gift to Tenovus Cancer Care in your Will, we really hope you will be able to.

Because of you, we’re just one call away

This year our Support Line nurses were at the end of the phone 365 days a year for anyone worried about cancer.

Meet Gill, who was one of those people.

“I’d been having mammograms for the last ten years, so when, in January 2014, I was recalled I skipped along expecting to be one of the four in five recalled women who are okay. Half an hour later I walked out and whispered to myself, “I have breast cancer”.

Two weeks later I had an operation to remove the part of the breast where the tumour was and then a second operation a fortnight later to remove some lymph nodes. After surgery I needed radiotherapy and a course of chemotherapy. Throughout my treatment I was lucky enough to have regular phone calls from Jane on the Tenovus Cancer Care Support Line. Her gentle voice and understanding comments were a lifeline, sometimes just at the right time.

Eventually in November 2014 my treatment was over and I celebrated at my daughter Charlotte’s wedding. I can’t thank Tenovus Cancer Care enough for the support I received and for being there when I needed them.”

Because of you, we can give a helping hand

meet

Geoff was diagnosed with prostate cancer after a regular blood test for diabetes, picked something up. Our Cancer Support Advisors helped him get some extra money.

“When I found out it was cancer, it was really frightening. I’d lost my sister less than a year before to lung cancer and she was only 64.

The forms I had to fill in to get help were so complicated, I couldn’t have done them by myself – so the help I got from Tenovus Cancer Care was absolutely fabulous. They even offered to come with me when there had to be an appeal. I was really nervous so knowing there was going to be someone there who understood what was going on was a huge relief.

The support I received from Tenovus Cancer Care was outstanding. They helped me get my life back and I began to go fishing and get back out with the dog again.”

This year we brought our total number of choirs to sixteen, meaning we can support even more people affected by cancer through the power of singing. Meet Jess who’s helped make that possible.

“Hi I’m Jess and I’m the Choir Leader for the Carmarthen and Llanelli choirs. I joined Tenovus Cancer Care three years ago and have been with my two choirs since they launched. My choirs are like their own little family – strong, loving and friends for life!

My choir members tell me that they get so much out of it. Support, friendship, fun and for a few hours, they don’t think about cancer. Thing is, my choirs support me as much as they support each other. I’ve been through some really difficult times in the last couple of years and they were there when things were tough and they’re there when things are good. I absolutely love them. I get to share my love of music and my love of teaching. I have the best job in the world!”

“As a cancer survivor I know how important the work of this charity is. I’m a volunteer and member of my local Sing with Us choir and have raised money by doing 10km runs and half marathons across Wales. Supporting Tenovus Cancer Care has helped enrich my life and given me so much. New friends and amazing opportunities and experiences, I just wouldn’t have had otherwise.”

Because of people like you

Jenny Thomas from Cardiff won £1,000 on our lottery and took a fabulous holiday to Australia with her winnings! “My husband volunteered for Tenovus Cancer Care and loved doing his bit to support them. Playing the lottery was my way of doing my bit. My lottery win helped me jet off to Australia to visit my daughter and four grandchildren!”

David began volunteering with us after using our services himself. He’s a great ambassador, helps our Volunteer Team every week, and recently won our Volunteer of the Year Award! “Volunteering helps keep me busy and in a work environment. When Tenovus Cancer Care wraps its arms around you, you know you’re safe – volunteering lets me give something back and say thank you.”

Because anything you can give, will make a real difference

With your help we can support even more people.

£10 means one person affected by cancer can get invaluable support from their local Sing with Us choir each week, helping them to cope with cancer treatment or losing a loved one.

£20 pays for one of our experienced nurses to man our free Support Line for one hour, so anyone frightened or worried about cancer always has someone to talk to.

£50 means one cancer patient can have a chemotherapy session on board our Mobile Support Unit, rather than having to go to hospital. We bring treatment closer to home so patients have less miles to travel and more time with the people they love.
