Safety Considerations

-Students will only touch the equipment and use the equipment when instructed to

do so by the teacher.

-Students will only hit the ball to their partner when their partner is watching.

-Students will not run across or on to another court while peers are hitting. The

students will be asked to wait until the point is over to walk on to a court to

retrieve a tennis ball.

-Students will keep the tennis ball in control, rather than recklessly hitting the ball.

-Students will not aim at their peers when trying to hit the ball.

-Students will not leave the tennis court area, unless instructed to do so by the

teacher.

Tennis Block Plan Day One Introductory Activity: Students will run two laps around all of the tennis courts holding their racket in their dominant hand. Fitness Activity: Cardiovascular endurance- Teacher will demonstrate a train (court run) and students will follow completing two court runs. (Jog up the doubles line, touch the net, slide across to singles line, jog backwards back to the service line, slide across to the center of the service line, jog up the middle of the service line, touch the net, jog backwards on the center service line, slide across center service line to the singles sideline, jog up to net on the singles sideline, touch the net, slide across to the doubles sideline, jog backwards to the base line, and slide across the full width of the baseline). Flexibility: Stretching calves, quadriceps, groin, hamstrings, triceps, shoulders, and wrists. Lesson Focus:

• Go over basic rules in tennis (scoring, boundaries, and safety) • Go over basic footwork (ready position) and court awareness • Racket awareness and handling techniques

Culminating Activity: Students will count and see how many times in a row they can hit the ball down using their racket, without losing control of the ball. Students will count and see how many times in a row they can hit the ball up using their racket to tap the ball. Students will see how low can they hit the ball and keep the ball bouncing.

Tennis Block Plan Day Two Introductory Activity: Students will practice their ‘ups and downs’ with their racket and one ball. Fitness Activity: Muscular Strength and Endurance: Continuous Relay -There will be four partners in each group. One partner will run between cones, one partner will do line jumps, one partner will do push-ups, and one partner will jump-rope. Students will each pick a station to begin at. Once the student has run back and forth to a cone four times, they will tag partner #2, who will tag partner #3, who will tag partner #4. All stations must be completed by all partners. Flexibility: Stretching calves, quadriceps, groin, hamstrings, triceps, shoulders, and wrists. Lesson Focus:

• Review ready position • Teach grips

1. Eastern grip 2. Continental grip

Culminating Activity: One student will hit a backhand to their partner, the partner will hit a backhand to their partner’s backhand, seeing how long they can rally back and forth with using only the two handed backhand. Students will be able to complete the figure 8 drill with cross court forehands and backhands. (Figure 8: one student hits directly down the line, second student hits a cross court shot to partner three, partner 3 hits a down the line shot to partner 4, and then partner 4 hits a cross court shot to partner 1. Rotate positions).

Tennis Block Plan Day 5 Introductory Activity: Students will stand across the net from another, each at the baseline and drop-hit the ball to one another practicing their forehands and backhands. Fitness Activity: Body Composition: Sport Steps -Teacher will form groups of students. One group member will draw a food card from the bucket that has a name of a food and the amount of fat grams in it. All group members will then count out and jump for the amount of fat grams on the card. Example: Big Mac= 28g of fat (students will jump for 28 times). Journal Entries You will be asked to provide one spiral notebook for this unit, for which you will write journal entries in. This tennis unit will last for approximately three weeks (14 class meetings). After every class you will be asked to reflect on the lesson. Therefore, you will have a total of 13 entries because you will not be asked to reflect on the last day of the unit since we will be having an exam.

Your journal entries could include:

-How you felt about how the lesson went -How you feel about your personal performance -Your level of improvement -Any difficulties you are having -What you would like to practice more -Any questions you have You must address at least three of the above, or three of your own thoughts and feelings. Punch Serve Assessment

You will need to find two partners, so you have a group of three. One partner will start as the

server (A), partner B will stand next to the serve to observe partner A’s form while serving.

Partner C will stand diagonally across the net from partner A to call the serve in or out.

Partner A = Server

Partner B = observer and recorder

Partner C = calls the ball in or out; tells partner B so he can record it.

Each person will get 5 serves. After 5 serves and the observation is complete, you will rotate in

a clockwise rotation so every student has a turn at each. A checklist must be completed by each

and every student. Make sure you pay close attention to your partners’ form while serving the

punch serve and calling the ball in or out (line = in).
