European 14 & Under Championships in Pilsen

Rudolf Molleker of Germany andRussia’s Anastasia Potapova arethe new European 14 & UnderChampions after comingthrough contrasting matches

on the final day of theChampionships in Pilsen (CZE).

Molleker, the second seed in the boys’event, blasted his way best home hope TomasJirousek for the loss of just a single game to claim hissecond medal of the tournament. Still just 13 years ofage, the prodigious German had been in imperiousform throughout the week, winning the tournamentwithout conceding a set.

The win was also a historic one; his victory enabledhim to reclaim the top spot on the Tennis EuropeJunior Tour rankings, and he became the first 14 &Under player in over 30 years to win the EuropeanJunior Championships and play on the winningWinter and Summer Cups teams in the same sea-son. He also becomes the first German boy sinceFlorian Loddenkemper in 1984 to win the 14 & UnderChampionship.

The victory over Jirousek would have been sweet forthe eventual champion, after the third seed had cau-sed double consternation for the Germans onSaturday, ending Nicola Kuhn’s hopes of securing anall-German final and teaming with Ezven Holis tosnatch gold from Molleker & Kuhn in the doublesfinal.

Overall the boys’ event went largely with form, withthe only unseeded players to reach the quarterfinalsbeing Leonid Sheyngezikht (BUL) and Jake Hersey(GBR), both of whom scored upsets over Top 10opposition.

Anastasia Potapova dominated the girls’ event inequally impressive style, never dropping more thanseven games in a match en route to her fourth final ofthe season on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour.

The third seed had looked particularly impressive ina 6-3 6-0 win over #2 Dayana Yastremska (UKR) inthe semifinals and picked up where she left off in thefinal, blasting to a 6-1 first set win over her WinterCups team-mate Olesya Pervushina.

Pervushina has spent most of this season asEurope’s #1 in her age group and used her big matchexperience to fight back in the second, levelling thematch with a 6-2 scoreline. However, forced to play adeciding set for the first time in the Championship,Potapova found an extra gear in the third set and

broke at will to emerge triumphant, 6-2.

The win means that Potapova leapfrogged her com-patriot to take the top spot in Tennis Europe’s 14 &Under rankings, but there will surely be no hard fee-lings between the two friends and team-mates. Theirdomination of the event was such that they also tea-med up to take the doubles crown. The final matchproved to be a seesaw battle against the sameUkrainian players that they beat in the singles semifi-nals, Kataryna Zavatska and Dayana Yastremska, eventually winning 6-7(5), 6-0, [10-7].

All four European Junior Championship finalists auto-matically qualify to compete at the Tennis EuropeJunior Masters in Reggio Calabria in October.

Draws, results and photos from the event can befound here.

European 16 & Under Championships in Moscow

Fanny Stollar and CorentinMoutet continued their smoothprogression through the juniorranks to claim the European 16& Under Championship titles in

Moscow.

Stollar had a particularly impressiveweek, claiming both singles and doubles gold medalsfor Hungary. Seeded second in the singles competi-tion, she remained steady while her fellow seeds suc-cumbed to a series of surprise early losses, advan-cing to the final without conceding a set in any of hermatches.

By contrast, her final opponent, home hope AnnaBlinkova had fought hard to survive several brusheswith disaster, notably outlasting Nikolina Jovic (SRB)in a final set tie break in the quarterfinals and recove-ring from the brink of defeat to end the hopes ofunseeded Hana Mraz (SLO) in the semis, 4-6 7-6(6)6-2.

The final turned out to be a one-sided affair. OnceStollar scored a decisive break to claim the first setshe never looked back, with the Russian unable towin another game. Stollar therefore becomes thethird Hungarian girl to claim the European 16 &Under title, and first since Timea Babos did so in2008.

A day earlier, Stollar had teamed up Dalma Galfi towin the doubles gold over Russians Anna Kalinskaya& Aleksandra Pospelova. The win must have beenparticularly satisfying for Stollar, who lost the 2013gold medal match alongside Anna Bondar.

The boys’ singles final turned out to be a battle bet-ween the last two winners of the European 14 &Under title as 2012 champion Mikael Ymer ofSweden faced reigning champ Corentin Moutet ofFrance.

Both players were in great form throughout the weekin Moscow, and underlined their promise by takingout the top two seeds Mate Valkusz (Moutet, 6-0 6-4) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (Ymer, 7-5 7-5) in thesemi-finals.

Moutet had the early advantage, consolidating anearly break to lead 4-1 in the first set before Ymercame back to claim the set on a tie break. The loss ofthe first set seemed to sting the French boy intoaction though and he reeled off twelve of the nextthirteen games to become the first boy since MatsWilander to claim European Championship titles intwo different age categories in successive years.

The win marks the third time in the last five years thata French boy has claimed the 16 & Under title, withMoutet following in the footsteps of Mattias Bourgue(2010) and Enzo Couacaud (2011).

The previous day, Kenneth Raisma & Mattias Siimarmade history by claiming the boys' doubles crownwith a straight sets win over Czechs Patrik Rikl andAlessandro Ricci to become the first Estonians everto win the title.

Both singles champions in Moscow leapt into theupper reaches of the Top 10 of the Tennis Europejunior rankings following the event. As with the 14 &Under Championships, all four finalists automaticallyqualify to compete in the Tennis Europe JuniorMasters in Reggio Calabria in October.

Draws, results and photos from Moscow can befound here.

European 18 & Under Championships in Klosters

The European 18 & Under titleshave gone to FrenchmanQuentin Halys and SpaniardSara Sorribes Tormo after bothplayers beat rivals from their

own country in the final.

For a short while, it looked as if thefinal matches could be played outside. But shortlybefore players were due on court, the strongest‘player’ in Klosters this week – the rain - once againdenied organisers a punctual start. Both matcheswere delayed and players, staff and spectators even-tually moved to Davos.

Of course, it would have been nicer to play outsidebut the intensity didn’t suffer from the change.Quentin Halys and Corentin Denolly showed tennis ofan extremely high level with heavily-favored Halyseventually prevailing 6-4 7-5. The #2 seed wasstronger towards the end of each set, and alsoappeared the fresher player mentally, with Denollycommitting two double faults on the final two points. An understandable let down for the in-form player, who was playing in his 27th match of this month.

For Halys, who had won the doubles on Saturdayalongside standard partner Johan Sébastien Tatlot, aperfect week came to an end. A finalist in 2013, henow leaves the Swiss mountains with two goldmedals. “From last year, I knew what to expect and Icoped well with the conditions. I definitely couldn’thave asked for more”, Halys said. He is the seventhFrench winner in Klosters. To top their triumph off,France also won the nations ranking.

Sara Sorribes Tormo is only the second female fromSpain to lift the trophy after Carla Suarez Navarro in2006, though Spanish legends Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario and Conchita Martinez each claimed titles inthe younger age categories. She defeated her dou-bles partner and best friend Paula Badosa Gibert 6-46-1 to claim the title.

The resistance of her younger opponent was brokenafter Sorribes Tormo took a close first set. Sorribeswas competing in Klosters for a second time, havingforced top seed Belinda Bencic into a deciding set inthe quarterfinal last year, and she also won the 16 &Under Championship in 2012. Already focusing onthe professional tour, Klosters was Sorribes’ firstjunior event since the US Open 2013.

Sorribes & Badosa had already claimed one medalby virtue of their runner-up spot in the doubles onSaturday. They were beaten by Britain's EmilyArbuthnott & Freya Christie, who became the first

players from their nation to win the title since the veryfirst Championship in 1976.

Persistent rainstorms throughout the week meantthat a lot of patience was required from all of the par-ticipants at this year’s in Championships. In total, four days out of seven were washed out, with playersand officials scrambling for indoor courts at neigh-bouring towns. The organizing team around tourna-ment director Hans Markutt rose to the challenge andreceived lots of positive feedback for their high-qual-ity work and the extra hours.

Klosters will host the 18 & Under Championships forat least two more years, with 2016 marking the 20thanniversary of the first edition of the tournament heldin the mountain resort. After this year, better weath-er is virtually guaranteed!

Draws, results and photos from Klosters can befound here.

Italy & Russia defend Tennis Europe Nations Challenge by HEAD titles

Italy and Russia have successfullydefended their 12 & Under TennisEurope Nations Challenge byHEAD titles.

At the boys’ finals in Alanya (TUR),Italy became the first team to seal a

title when both boys won their singlesmatches against Serbia to ease to an unassailable 2/0lead. The opening match saw Uros Jovic of Serbia startwell, clinching the first set against Lorenzo Musetti on atie-break. The Italian came back strongly though, showingthe form that won him the title in Padova recently to claimthe next sets 6-2 6-3 and put his team ahead.

Italian #1 Fausto Tabacco has become accustomed towinning in recent weeks, taking singles titles in Maglie andPorto san Giorgio in addition to three doubles titles thisseason, and made short work of Viktor Jovic in the secondsingles match, winning 6-4 6-2. Tabacco was then joinedby Lorenzo Rottoli to complete a 3-0 sweep when the pairconceded just two games to Jovic and Goran Zivotic in thedoubles rubber.

The one-sided final tie was in contrast to the earliermatches of the two teams, with Italy having had to comefrom a match down to beat Romania and Czech Republic, while Serbia were also taken the full distance bySwitzerland and Spain.

The girls’ finals in Ajaccio (FRA) saw a battle betweenRussia and Ukraine, who between them had combined towin all but one of the previous editions of the tournament. Both teams emerged unbeaten from their round-robingroups, with Ukraine sailing past Turkey, Czech Republicand Netherlands for the loss of just one set, while Russiaconceded just two more sets in beating Poland, GreatBritain and Belgium. The two nations have met often inrecent weeks in major junior events, with Russia coming

out on top earlier this week in the final of the 14 & UnderWorld Junior Tennis event, as well in the singles and dou-bles finals at the European 14 & Under Championships.

Sadly for Ukraine, any hopes of turning the tables onthose defeats were short-lived. Russia’s Daria Fraymanhas won three 12 & Under titles already on the TennisEurope Junior Tour this season and used her experienceto overcome a second set fight back from occasionaldoubles partner Daria Snigur to claim a 6-2 4-6 6-1 win.

Maria Novikova then extended her impressive Tour winstreak to 19 matches with a 6-0 7-5 win over MartaKostyuk to complete her team’s title defence beforeKostyuk and partner Dasha Lopatetskaya were able toclaim a consolation point in the doubles with a 6-2 6-2 winover Frayman and Alina Chareva.

The bronze medal play-off matches saw Czech Republicbeat Spain 2/1 in the boys’ competition and Turkey beatPoland 2/0 in the girls’. In all, a total of 62 national teamstook part in the 2014 event. The victories are the third forItaly’s boys and fifth for Russia’s girls in the 8-year histo-ry of the competition. Full results are available here.

France and Hungary claim European 16 & Under team titles

France and Hungary have won the 16 & UnderSummer Cups titles to complete sweeps of the 2014European team competitions in this age categoryand confirm their places amongst the tournamentfavourites at next month’s Junior Davis and Fed Cupby BNP Paribas finals in Mexico.

Hosting the final rounds of the event in Budapest forthe first time, the Hungarians made the most of theirhome support throughout the week, coming frombehind to win their opening tie against Great Britainand surviving another decisive doubles match in thesemi-final with Belarus.

Ironically, the final turned out to be their easiestencounter of the whole tournament. Dalma Galfi putthe top seeds ahead with a routine 6-3 6-4 win overFrance’s Tessah Andrianjafitrimo in a match thatlasted just over an hour.

Fresh from winning the European 16 & UnderChampionships in Moscow last week, Fanny Stollarthen added another milestone to her increasinglyimpressive junior career. She was made to workmuch harder than her team-mate by Lucie Wargnier, who snatched the first set on a tie-break, but cameback strongly in the last two sets to emerge a 6-7(4)6-3 6-2 winner.

Hungary’s girls are enjoying unprecedented successin 2014. Having won the Tennis Europe Winter Cupsby HEAD in February for a second time, this win rep-resents the first time that the national team has wonthe Summer title. In addition to Stollar’s EuropeanChampionships singles win, she and Galfi alsoteamed up to claim the gold medal in doubles inMoscow.

The runner-up spot also marked progress for theFrench team, who surprisingly have not triumphedin the Girls 16 & Under event since 1994, and hadappeared in the final only once since, in 1996.

France also managed a home win by claiming theboys’ Borotra Cup title in Le Touquet with a similar-ly one-sided win over Germany. >>

France and Hungary claim European 16 & Under team titles

<< The two teams had contrasting paths to the final.France beat Sweden in their opening match, whichincluded a repeat win for Corentin Moutet overMikael Ymer, with the two playing for the second timein two weeks after facing off in the EuropeanChampionships final. The hosts then went on to beatEstonia 3/0 to claim a berth in the final and a chanceof earning a record tenth Borotra Cup title.

Germany had caused shocked fourth seeds anddefending champions Russia in the quarterfinals, reversing a defeat in last year’s championshipmatch, and went on to upset second seeds Italy inthe semi-finals.

After play was washed out by rain on the final morn-ing, Ugo Humbert put the hosts ahead with a hard-

fought 6-2 4-6 6-3 win over Daniel Altmaier. Moutetthen stepped up in his now familiar role of French#1 and showed no mercy to Valentin Guenther, conceding just two games to secure the title andjoin an elite band of players to win the Europeanindividual and team championships back-to-back.

The win marks the sixth time that the French 16 &Under team has swept both the Winter andSummer Cups titles in the same season, and thefifth such occasion since 2005.

Germany leads race to European Tennis Trophy

Germany has opened a com-manding lead in the race to the2014 European Tennis Trophy, having earned more than dou-ble the points of nearest chal-lenger the Czech Republic asthe season passes its half-waypoint.

The strong position of Germany comes fromimproved performances in all four contributing cate-gories. Victories for German teams at the TennisEurope Winter Cups by HEAD and EuropeanSummer Cups plus a return to the Fed Cup by BNPParibas final for the first time in over 20 years haveled to the country being ranked second in both Juniorand Professional tennis categories. Should Germanygo on to claim the overall title, it would be the firsttime that the country tops the Trophy tables since1996.

Germany typically dominates in senior tennis andthis year is no exception. With most of the senior ten-nis points already allocated, the Senior TennisTrophy is already secure by a massive margin oversecond placed Austria.

Currently in second place overall, the Czech Republicis still in contention to recapture the overall title thatthey won last won in 2012, but holds a slim lead overFrance, Italy and defending champions Russia.

Further down the overall Top 10, the Netherlands andGreat Britain are neck-and-neck in sixth and seventhposition, with the Brits threatening to claim theWheelchair Tennis Trophy from the Dutch for thefirst time since the category was introduced in 2001.

The Trophy is devised to recognise the annualachievements of Tennis Europe's 49 member

nations, providing a comprehensive overview of theperformances of players and teams representingnational tennis federations across four disciplines ofthe sport throughout the season.

The first Trophy Race update of 2014 includes allpoints earned by nations during the first six monthsof the year. Rankings that use a rollover 52-week sys-tem are not included to the point totals at this stage. The final point standings will be announced duringthe first week of the 2015 season, and the awardspresented to national federations at the 2015 TennisEurope Annual General Meeting, which will be held inLausanne (SUI) from 26-29 March.

Full results from last year can be found here, whilethe Top 5 in each category so far in 2014 can be seenin the table below.

In the Spotlight: Nicola Kuhn & Rudolph Molleker

Nicola Kuhn and Rudolf Molleker are spearheading amemorable season on the Tennis Europe JuniorTour for Germany. Both have spent the year so farranked firmly inside the 14 & Under Top 10, and thepair has combined to win both European team com-petitions, the Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEADand the Copa Del Sol, as well as a number of individ-ual events.

Recently they reaffirmed their dominance whenMolleker won the European Junior Championships(Kuhn reached the semifinals) and they teamed upto claim doubles silver medals. We caught up withthem in Pilsen to ask them to evaluate their seasonso far…

This year’s Winter Cups win was a big one forGermany; the first in thirty years. How was the tour-nament for you?Rudi Molleker: Well, it was the first time we’d playedtogether on a team. We’d met before a few times, and had played doubles together, but not at a teamevent. Once we started to play we felt very goodtogether. We didn’t think that we would win the cup, just because it was our first time together, so it wasunbelievable. And after that at the Summer Cups wefelt differently, like “OK, so we know we can winthis!”

Did you feel more pressure at the Summer Cups, knowing that you had won the Winter Cups inCorreggio?Nicola Kuhn: Not really. We had to play one match ata time and try to do our best. Of course we had themotivation to win the Summer Cup and be able towin both events, but really there was no extra pres-sure for us from outside.

The Summer Cups also serve as the qualifying for theworldwide 14 & Under team event. What do youexpect from the World Junior Tennis finals inProstejov?NK: Well, we have to play good of course, becausethe players there are very good – the best in theworld. We just have to play one round at a time andnot think about the finals too much. [The boys wenton the win the championship, beating Canada 2/1 inthe final]

What have been your other favourite tournamentsthis year? You have both had some impressive resultson the regular Tennis Europe Junior Tour. RM: Mine was definitely Tim Essonne in France, that’s the best I have played this year. I beat threegood guys and in the finals I beat the top guy fromRussia [Alen Avidzba] 6-0 6-0, which was unbeliev-

able. So that was definitely my biggest tournament.

NK: Mine was at Tarbes [Les Petits As], where I lostin the final. Everybody was playing there, him also[Molleker], so to reach the final, and play against theFrench guy in front of a big crowd, was a big thing forme. I won at Bolton the week before, which was alsoa good result so those were a good two weeks.

When you play against each other, who wins?RM: Well, we’ve played only once so far…

NK: It was quite a tough match, and he won in thethird set. But we’re going to play many, many timesin the future, so it won’t be the last one!

Nicola, you train at an academy in Spain. How did thatcome about?NK: I live in Germany normally, but since I was smallwe would always go to a summer house in Spain forholidays. I was also practicing when I was there andthen two and a half years ago, we saw that the acad-emy of Juan Carlos Ferrero [Equelite] was fairlyclose – not really near, but about 120km from myhouse, so we thought OK, let’s try to train there andsee if I like it. I liked it a lot, and now I’m living there atthe Academy and that’s where I train.

What’s it like to live away from home at 14?

NK: [Laughs] To be honest I feel quite at homeeverywhere I go! But it’s a very nice atmospherethere. They support us a lot when we travel on socialmedia, and it’s a good motivation. They are doing avery good job; Ferrero is on court with us most of thedays, and that’s very helpful. Everybody there sup-ports everybody else.

Where do you live and train, Rudi?RM: I stay in Berlin, where I practise with my coach.I’ve been with him since I was 5 so we’ve alreadycome a long way. Sometimes I go to Hannover >>

<< where I play with Nicolas Kiefer and I have like 10weeks in the year where I can practise there with him,so that helps me a lot.

Who would you say are your tennis heroes and inspira-tions?RM: Mine is Roger Federer. I just love to watch him onthe court. He is quiet on the court and focused on hisgame. It’s unbelievable to watch him, especially hisfootwork and his technique.

NK: Well, it’s quite difficult for me to say because I likeDjokovic very much. He fights all the time and pro-duces some unbelievable shots. But most of all, I thinkI admire Ferrer. Also I know him very well, since I was8 years old. I have practised with him in Hamburg at

the ATP event, and the guy isjust unbelievable. The way hefights for all the balls, henever gives up, mentally he isso strong and I think that he isthe nicest person that you canmeet on the ATP Tour rightnow.

What are your goals for the rest of this season?NK: Obviously this week [the European JuniorChampionships], and the World Junior Tennis finals. Both are important, and we want to have as many aswins as possible, together and separately, becauseit’s vital for our confidence. At the end of the yearmaybe the Orange Bowl. The calendars are not fixedyet, you have to be a little bit flexible…

Will we see you at the Tennis Europe Junior Masters?NK: I don’t know…

RM: It depends. I don’t know if we will qualify…[infact, Molleker qualified automatically by winning theEuropean Junior Championships, while Kuhn is cur-rently in fifth place in the Race to Masters rankings]

NK: There is an Under 14 event at the ATP ValenciaOpen, so that is also a goal for me. Then afterwardswe have to prepare well for the next year, becausewe will think about Under 16s and starting to play ITFevents too.

RM: It’s also important to rest and not play too manyevents. Some holidays are nice, too!

SMS INC. Announces Results of 30th Wimbledon Equipment Census SPORTS MARKETING SURVEYS INC. (SMS INC.),the official partner of Tennis Europe, has recordedthe equipment, clothing and footwear used by com-petitors at The Wimbledon Championships for thepast 30 years, not only in the men’s and women’ssingles but across all 12 categories including jun-iors, invitational and wheelchair competitions.

Following their 30th consecutive year as researchprovider to the All England Lawn Tennis Club, SMSINC. has unveiled the results of the 2014 equipmentcensus at The Championships, and has comparedthese results against the equipment used by TennisEurope Junior Tour players.

The results offer exclusive insight into equipmenttrends at tennis’ most prestigious event, and theramifications for brands when worldwide exposureis gained, particularly regarding junior elite playerssuch as those on the Tennis Europe Tour. Offeredas part of the complete census are listings of equip-ment and clothing from racquet, racquet bag andstring to shoes, shirt, shorts and skirt.

For the 20th consecutive year at The WimbledonChampionships, Wilson was the number-one rac-quet manufacturer. This year’s event was particu-larly successful for the brand with 11 racquets inplay in the last 16 of the men’s & ladies’ singles – or34% of the racquets at this stage of the tourna-ment.

Continuing its considerable momentum in thesport, Babolat gained market share at TheChampionships for the sixth consecutive year. Nobrand has had a longer growth-streak in SMS’ threedecades at the event. They are established as thenumber two racquet brand at the event – and thenumber one racquet brand among all female com-petitors with a 33% players’ share.

While both Wilson and Babolat can claim to havehad successful Wimbledon Championships, HEADwere the brand that gained the highest number ofracquets year-on-year, increasing their stable by20. HEAD also had the highest percentage of win-ners, with nine Champions including Men’s Singlesin Novak Djokovic, completing their most success-ful Championships for 10 years.

SMS INC.’s detailed annual report also documentseach brand’s time on the main show courts duringthe Championships. In the men’s singles competi-tion Tennis Europe partner HEAD, managed to topshow court exposure largely thanks to their racquetsponsorship of champion Djokovic who amassed

almost five more ‘show-court hours’ than secondplaced Roger Federer.

The influence of such players is clear to see. Thethree leading brands Wilson, Babolat and HEAD, arealso the top 3 racquet brands used by players com-peting on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour, account-ing for an 84% share, with Babolat claiming top spotwith 33% of players.

The shoe brands favoured by the pros atWimbledon were also noted in SMS INC.’s completereport, Nike and Adidas continue to dominate, shar-ing 70% of the show-court exposure. Similar trendsare also witnessed among Tennis Europe JuniorTour players with Nike and Adidas claiming the top2 ranks albeit with a reduced lead. Asics is the num-ber 3 brand for Tennis Europe players, and com-bined with Nike and Adidas account for 70% of theshare.

In the Spotlight: Heide Orth

Germany’s Heide Orth recently extended her recordas the most successful female player in seniors ten-nis history with an incredible 42nd major (Europeanor World Championship) title in Sofia. We caught upwith her to ask her to reflect on her achievements…

You have been a tennis champion since your days asa junior. What is it about tennis that has kept youplaying all your life?

Well, tennis is a fascinating sport that offers so manychallenges: technically from the kick-serve to thesliced backhand, as well as physically and not leastmentally. Personally, I like to compete and, ofcourse, to win.

You have played all over the world in all types ofevents. What has been your favourite place to play?

This not easy to answer because over the yearsthere have been so many changes regarding theattractiveness of the different tournaments. But Ican say that in my younger years I did like to play theGerman Internationals at Hamburg. Nowadays Ienjoy the friendly atmosphere, the wonderful envi-ronment and the good management of Klosters inSwitzerland. Most recently I was very impressed bythe excellent organization of the European SeniorChampionships in Sofia where I played for the firstbut surely not the last time.

We were very happy to have you at the EuropeanSenior Championships. How important is this tourna-ment to you?

As I mentioned, this year I participated for the firsttime at the European Senior Championships. It hasbeen a very positive experience for me and it wasfun to win another European Championship.

What has been the most satisfying tournament win ofyour life?

Maybe I should say it has been the WorldChampionships 2012 in Umag, where I won all mysingles in the Individuals as well as in the Cup with-out losing a set.

How ‘professional’ is life on the senior circuit? Do youtrain hard for the events you play at?

In terms of professionalism, you cannot comparelife on the senior circuit with the circuit of the realpros. My personal training is what may be the stan-dard for seniors: on-court practicing and doingsome physical exercises to stay fit.

You were recently given an Outstanding AchievementAward by the ITF to add to your Lifetime SeniorsChampion Award from Tennis Europe. What do theserecognitions mean to you?

Both awards have been and still are a great honourto me. Of course, it was an unforgettable experienceto be invited to the ITF Champions Dinner in Paristhis year and to be awarded by Mr. Ricci Bitti, the ITFPresident, in front of about 400 former and actualchampions as well as important officials from allover the world for being the most successful femalesenior player in the 100 years´ history of ITF.

What are your tennis goals for the future?

The most important thing for me is to remain physi-cally in good shape and to have fun on the courtenjoying many good matches.

Is tennis a big part of your family life? Do/did youencourage your children and grandchildren to play?

No, actually my family life has not much to do withtennis. My son is playing some tennis but not at atournament level and my grandchildren are still tooyoung to play tennis seriously.

If you could play against anyone from the history ofthe sport, who would you most like to play?

This a bit theoretical. However in my younger yearsLittle Mo (Maureen Connolly) was my idol. As shewas several years older than I unfortunately therehas been never an opportunity to play against her.

Mrs. Orth in Sofia, where she won her 42nd major seniors’ title.
