Czech Republic and Russia win 14&U European Summer Cups titles

<< set to force a decider but was unable to prolongthe Russian victory much longer, with Dubrivnyysealing the title after a high-quality two-hour battle. The Russians then completed a 3-0 win, staging animpressive fightback to win the doubles 3-6 7-6 (10-7).

Both Dubrivnyy and Klimov also served on the victo-rious Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD team inFebruary, giving Russia a clean sweep of 14 & Underboys’ team titles this season.

At the girls’ final rounds in Loano, unseeded CzechRepublic came from behind to end Spain’s hopes of afirst-ever girls’ Europa Cup title.

The Spaniards had ended the run of defending cham-pions Great Britain in the quarterfinals before sur-prising top seeds Russia in the semis, while theCzechs had also scored two upset wins, over seedsItaly and Romania.

Spain started the final strongly as Paula Arias Manjonrecovered from the loss of the opening set to sur-prise Anna Slovakova, ranked 398 places above her,and secure a 1-0 lead. In the battle of the #1 players,Europe’s #3 Marketa Vondrousova then showed herauthority by leveling the match with a 7-5 6-4 winover 12th-ranked Eva Guerrero Alvarez.

Spain then drafted in the fresh legs of Noelia BouzoZanotti who replaced Guerrero for the deciding dou-bles match, but the more experienced pair ofSlovakova & Vondrousova strode to a straight setswin to claim the title for their country for the first timesince 1999.

The 14 & Under Summer Cups have a double pur-pose, serving also as the European qualifying com-petition for the ITF World Junior Tennis tourna-ment. The top five teams from both the boys’ andgirls’ events (plus the Czech Republic as hosts) willqualify to take part in the finals of the world’s teamevent for Under 14s in Prostejov in August.

Germany leads race to European Tennis Trophy

Germany has stormed to thelead in the Race to the EuropeanTennis Trophy, opening up a500-point lead over nearestchallenger Russia.

Germany’s dominance is due inno small part to some outstand-

ing results in senior tennis. With three of the fourmain European senior events already completed, themajority of the points in this category have alreadybeen allocated and Germany is already guaranteedto retain the Senior Tennis Trophy it has won everyyear since 1990.

Russia’s strong performance is due largely to itsresults in the junior team events to have been com-pleted so far this year. Two Tennis Europe WinterCups by HEAD titles from five finals have left thenation in a strong position to win the Junior Tennistrophy for a ninth time in the last ten years.

The Czech Republic is also in contention to defend itstitles, having won the Overall Performance andProfessional Tennis trophies for the first time in 2012.Currently in fourth place overall, the Czechs stand660 points behind the leaders, but are joint leaders inthe professional tennis category and are still alive inthe Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, where a repeat victo-ry would make up the overall deficit.

Italy leads the professional tennis standings along-side the Czech Republic, and currently holds a slimlead in the race to in third place overall, thanks tosome prolific winners in seniors tennis.

The Netherlands is seventh overall, and retains itsusual spot atop the Wheelchair Tennis standingsthough with a reduced lead compared to last yearover France and Great Britain, who share second

place (and are ranked fifth and eighth overall). Othernations to feature in the overall Top Ten includeSerbia and Austria, with 2011 winners Spain current-ly trailing in tenth place.

The Trophy is designed to recognise the annualachievements of Tennis Europe's 49 membernations, providing a comprehensive overview of theperformances of players and teams representingnational tennis federations across four disciplines ofthe sport throughout the season.

The first Trophy Race update of 2013 includes allpoints earned by nations during the first six monthsof the year. Rankings that use a rollover 52-week sys-tem are not included to the points totals at this stage. The final point standings will be announced duringthe first week of the 2014 season, and the awardspresented to national federations at the 2014 TennisEurope Annual General Meeting.

Full results from last year can be found here, whilethe Top 5 in each category so far in 2013 can be seenin the table below.

Bartoli & Murray claim maiden Wimbledon titles

Andy Murray has ended Britain’s 77-year wait for aWimbledon men’s singles champion in style bycomprehensively beating world #1 Novak Djokovicto collect his second Grand Slam title.

In a match between the world’s top two players, itwas the lower-ranked Murray who controlled pro-ceedings, backed by a partisan crowd of 15,000 onthe Centre Court. Having been comfortably aheadthroughout most of the match, the second seed wasin danger of letting his opponent back into thematch when serving for victory, squandering a 40-0lead and having to save three break points beforeeventually seeing a Djokovic backhand float into thenet.

The Scot now holds two major titles, as well as theOlympic gold medal and strengthens his grip on theworld #2 position. Murray described his relief atfinally having ended his nation’s wait for a champi-on, saying, “It's really hard. For the last four or fiveyears, it's been very, very tough, very stressful, a lotof pressure. The few days before the tournamentare really difficult, as well. It's just kind of every-where you go. It's so hard to avoid everythingbecause of how big this event is, but also because ofthe history and no Brit having won. It's been very, very difficult.

The tournament was rocked by a series of high pro-file upsets during the first week, with Roland Garroswinner Rafael Nadal ousted by Steve Darcis in hisopening match and 7-time champion Roger Federerseeing his record-setting run of 36 consecutiveGrand Slam quarterfinal appearances end at thehands of Sergey Stakhovskiy.

The women’s singles was arguably even moreupset-strewn than the men’s event. Red hotfavourite Serena Williams entered the tournamentdetermined to defend her title after triumphing atRoland Garros and riding a career-best win streak of24 matches, with few pundits looking past theAmerican or the other two most-recent Slam win-ners Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka aspotential winners. Incredibly, all three were out bythe end of the first week.

If Marion Bartoli benefited from the collapse of thelower half of the draw, she certainly did it in style, advancing to the final without the loss of a set with asteely determination. Her final opponent SabineLisicki had a tougher route on paper, but her resultswere as impressive as they were improbable. Afterending Serena’s reign in the fourth round by recov-ering from 0-3 down in the final set, she navigated

past Kaia Kanepi to set up a semifinal with last year’sfinalist Agnieszka Radwanska, now the favourite towin her first Grand Slam in the absence of her mainrivals. Playing her second semi-final at Wimbledon,Lisicki held her nerve in a marathon third set, even-tually ousting the Pole 9-7 to advance to the biggestmatch of her career.

The nervous energy that Lisicki had harnessed sowell in her previous matches betrayed her in thefinal, with the German becoming increasingly frus-trated at her erratic serving and the lack of errorsfrom her French opponent. Bartoli later commentedthat she recognised Lisicki’s nerves from her ownfirst appearance in the Wimbledon final in 2007, andknew that she would win. After racing to a com-manding 6-1 4-1 lead, Bartoli briefly lost concentra-tion as Lisicki harnessed the crowd’s support tolaunch a mini comeback, but it was too little too lateand the Frenchwoman served out to love to win hermaiden Grand Slam title at her 47th attempt; alongevity record in women’s tennis.

The women’s doubles went to eighth seeds Su-WeiHseih (TPE) & Peng Shuai (CHN), who brushed pastAshleigh Barty & Casey Dellacqua in straight sets toenable Hseih to become the first player fromChinese Taipei ever to win a Grand Slam title. TheirAustralian opponents were playing in their secondSlam final of the season and will break into the Top20, while the winners both enter the Top 10.

The record-breaking Bob & Mike Bryan etched theirnames even further into the record books bybecoming the first team ever to hold all four GrandSlam titles and Olympic gold medals at the sametime. At 35-years of age, the world #1s are moredominant than ever, and now have the chance tobecome the first team to record a calendar yearGrand Slam at the US Open. Their final opponentsIvan Dodig (CRO) and Marcelo Melo (BRA) startedtheir first Slam final strongly; taking the first set in a

tie break, but were eventually pegged back by theAmericans, who wrapped up their 15th major title.

The mixed doubles saw Daniel Nestor of Canada andKristina Mladenovic of France improve on their run-ner-up spot at Roland Garros by winning the title. They ended the reign of defending champion LisaRaymond (USA) and her new partner Bruno Soares(BRA) with a marathon 7-5 2-6 8-6 win that finishedlate on the evening of the final day.

Junior world #1 Belinda Bencic made history byrecording a rare Roland Garros-Wimbledon double, building on her recent Paris win to outlast AmericanTaylor Townsend in three sets in the final. The victoryfor the Swiss player ends an incredible run of 26 con-secutive junior Slams won by different girls and makesher the first player since Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in2006 to win more than one Slam title. Bencic will nextturn her attention to the European JuniorChampionships in Klosters, where she will attempt tobecome the first home player to win the girls’ titlesince Martina Hingis in 1994.

Reigning Roland Garros champions also triumphed inthe girls’ doubles, where Barbora Krejcikova &Katerina Siniakova (CZE) ousted Anhelina Kalinina(UKR) and Iryna Shymanovich (BLR) for the loss ofjust four games, while the boys doubles went toAussie pair Nick Kyrgios & Thanasi Kokkinakis, 6-2 6-3 winners of Enzo Couacuad (FRA) & StefanoNapolitano (ITA). It is the second consecutive yearthat Kyrgios has lifted the trophy, having won last yearwith compatriot Andrew Harris.

Gianluigi Quinzi of Italy continued his rapid rise byclaiming the boys’ singles; just the second Italian everto do so. The left-hander, who holds the distinction ofhaving won European team titles at the 12, 14 and 16 &Under age groups and recently won his first ITF ProCircuit title, claimed his first Junior Slam with a 7-5 7-

6(2) win over Hyeon Chung of the Republic of Korea.

It remains to be seen whether Wimbledon 2013 rep-resents an anomaly or a seismic shift for tennis’most celebrated players. With Murray havingreached the final of the last four Grand Slams that hehas participated in, few would disagree that his bat-tles with Djokovic have taken over from the Federer-Nadal duels as the sport’s marquee attraction.Federer and Nadal will be keen to make amends fortheir poor performances in the coming months, aswill the women’s top three of Williams, Azarenka andSharapova. With three different men’s and women’swinners of the first three Grand Slams of the season, the US Open in New York will now be pivotal in decid-ing the players of the year.
