THE ISLAND #THE ISLAND#

Everyday life on Tenerife has always beencoloured by the influence of the volcano,Teide. At 3,718 metres, it is the highestmountain in Spain, and its primordial forcehas both devastated villages and given lifein the form of fertile soil. For the originalinhabitants of the island (the Guanches)the mountain was sacred. Anyone whospends any length of time on Tenerifesooner or later ends up on the smallwinding roads that lead up to the top ofthe mountain. Here you travel alternatelyabove and in the clouds, fascinated byboth the dramatic changes in weather andthe magnificent views out over theCanarian archipelago.

The northern parts of Tenerife, aroundValle de la Ortava and Isla Baja (also knowas the "Secret of Tenerife"), is ideal forthose in search of seaside, history, leisureand countryside experiences. It was in thetown of Puerto de la Cruz tourism firststarted in the Canary Islands. The town ofla Ortova is full of beautiful and historicalbuildings and is surrounded by bananaplantations. The Los Realejos district hasdeeply rooted farming traditions and hereyou will find relaxing countryside andcoastal accomodation. The isla Baja area isideal for outdoor activities as hiking andthe leafy forests are home to manyendemic birds. The town of Garachico wasthe most important port in Tenerife untilthe beginning of the 18th century when avolcanic eruption destroyed it. But thetown rose again and has today a somewhatexclusive air.

The southern parts of the island canguarantee almost eternal sunshine andexcellent, golden, sandy beaches. Dreamhotels, lively tourist resorts, restaurants, shows, water-sports and a bustling nightlife. Here are is the most attractive tourist

resorts, Los Christianos, Playa de lasAméricas, Costa del Silencio and SanMiguel, located.
