Dear members and friends of Christ Lutheran Church:
This is February, and this month we celebrate Valen-tine’s Day. Did you know that there were actually two men that lived in the third and fourth century who made this day happen, maybe even three. One of them was commemorated as a Christian saint on February 14, 496 AD, and so Valentine’s Day has been observed ever since 496 AD (that’s longer than Christmas has been cel-ebrated). The man who was commemorated as a saint was a priest, and/or a bishop in the Roman Empire, and the other is pretty much unknown. One of the stories told though is that one of these ministered to all the persecut-ed Christians in Rome. This man died a martyr’s death. The other man is known to have been a priest, and the other one…who knows. What is really interesting about
these saint’s is that it wasn’t until Geoffrey Chaucer writings about these saints as being romantics, lovers in the four-teenth century that made this holiday a holiday about love. Other thoughts during the Middle Ages was that birds paired in the middle of February…hence, the notion of love. Valentine’s Day -- a religious holiday secularized.
Now that this is out there guys, c’mon!! What are you going to do for those special spouses this year. The day is almost here, so put on your thinking hats and let’s make our spous-es glad we’re a part of their lives.
Continuing with the theme of love, Wednesday, February 17, begins the season of Lent with Ash Wednesday. This is the time of year when we really sense the immense love God has for us when He doesn’t even spare His son’s earthly life in order to save us. That’s amazing love. That’s holy love. The pandemic is still quite active and we will not be doing church as usual quite yet, but we have hope – I can see a faint light at the end of the tunnel. So, this year’s theme will be “Sensing Hope.” We will have in-person- wor-ship on Ash Wednesday evening and all Wednesday nights during Lent as long the pandemic doesn’t interfere with that. As usual, we will celebrate Lent with Holden Evening Pray-

Weather Policy
When school is let out early because of stormy weather, we will automatically cancel after-school and evening events that night. We will rarely cancel Sunday morning worship, as people appreciate the radio broadcast even more in stormy weather. Sun-day School may be cancelled, however, as may Satur-day evening worship. Listen to KJOE Radio for news of storm-related cancellations, or check the “Slayton Christ Lutheran Church” Facebook page.

For those of you who were at church during Christmas, you saw the beautifully draped cross connected to a cradle be-neath it by material. It was stunning. As Gwen said, it was so serene and comforting all at once. Symbols are such a huge part of church life that has been somewhat neglected over the past few decades. One of the joys for me when I came to this church was to see all of the symbols hanging in the fellowship hall (were by the cross in the sanctuary). These are symbols that point to something larger. Symbols in the church convey the relationship be-tween humans and God in a way that provokes our imagi-nations. It’s similar to the elements in the sacraments. For example, the water in baptism drowns, makes clean, wash-es away, and with God’s word, creates a new identity. That’s what a simple element or a simple symbol does. Back to the beautifully draped cross and the cradle now. Did you know that there is actually a symbol in the Christian church that combines the cross and the cradle together? Well, there is a symbol with them both together and it is in the box below.
This symbol shows a cross which signifies how Jesus paid the penalty for our sins. He was tortured, beaten, humiliated and finally hung on the cross and still was mocked while hanging. Jesus did this, for us, just as the symbol reminds us. There is also the cradle in the symbol which reminds us that God sent his Son, Jesus, as Immanuel, “God is with us.” The forgiveness of our sins could not have happened unless Jesus be-came incarnate (became human). So Jesus was born as a normal human baby--God in-carnate. Because of Christmas, Easter is
possible, and because of Easter we know that all of God’s promises are ours…all of them and all of the time to all of God’s children.
13
The Nicene Creed starts to hint at the fact that Jesus need-ed to be born in order for salvation to happen. That was one place where clarifications were needed. The Athanasian Creed, a creed we never use but was in the LBW (page 54 if you want to see it!). A part of it reads, “It is necessary for eternal salvation that one also faithfully believe that our Lord Jesus Christ became flesh.” In other words, the cross and the cradle are necessary for our salvation. Jesus has to be born in order for Jesus to be able to die for our sins. The cross and cradle go together.

February is American Heart Month!
-Did you know 600,000 Americans die from heart disease every year?
-The number 1 cause of death for most groups, heart disease affects all ages, genders, and ethnicities.
Risks are high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, excessive alcohol use.
-The heart weighs between 8-12 ounces
-It is divided into 4 chambers that work together to pump blood in and out and beats usually at 60-80 times per mi-nute.
Facts about Heart Health
1. Heart attacks can be silent. One in five heart attacks oc-curs without the person even knowing they had one!
2. Heart attacks affect women differently. They experience dif-ferent symptoms than men. These include pain in the back, arm, neck, or shoulder, nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath, and vomiting.
3. Young women are at higher risk than men. Women under the age of 50 are twice as likely to die of a heart attack as men in the same age group.
4. Heart attacks are more likely to happen on Monday mornings than other days of the week.
5. Diet soda raises heart attack risk. If you drink one or more diet sodas a day, your chances of having a heart attack are 43% higher than those who drink regular soda or none at all.
Reduce your risk for heart disease by eating a healthy diet, engaging in physical activity, and managing your cholesterol and blood pressure.

Thanking Jesus on Valentine's Day Author/Written By: Marilyn Ferguson ©2010
I give my heart to Jesus this special time of year
When others seem so distant my Lord is always near.
When the world is lost in candy and sending cards around When everyone is busy my Lord can then be found.
When I am feeling lonely my Lord is always there
When I am feeling fragile He handles me with care.
When others seem so loving and go the extra mile It only takes my Jesus to really make me smile.
When people pass out chocolate and flowers signed with love
I thank my Lord for sending His Son from up above.
When all is lost in sweetness I hang my head to pray My Lord is extra precious this special heartfelt day.

Registration is open for
2021!! Sign up soon for
the week of your choice.
Our numbers will more
than likely be limited for

again, like we did in 2020.
We’ll keep everyone post-
ed on any updates or
changes in policies, etc.
Help send kids to Camp…
Become a Pelican Club or Timber Society
member today. Pelican Club members sup-
port the ministry with a gift of $100 - $499 a
year and Timber Society members give $500
or more a year.
Thanks for your support!

again. So far, we’ve raised
$1,100,000 in gifts/pledges towards
our $1,500,000 goal! Watch for
more information about our pro-
gress as we start 2021.

ed to camp for some skiing, tea, and Bible study!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We are so grateful for our donors and congregations
and their partnership through a difficult 2020. We hope for a more normal 2021 but we will still
need your generous support!
