    Counting 1-20 With Ten-Frames

    Topic: Counting by tens

    Grade: Kindergarten

    Standards:

CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.A.1 Count to 100 by ones and by tens CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.A.2 Count forward beginning from a given number

within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1)

CCSS.Math.Content.K.OA.A.4 For any number from 1 to 9, find the number thatmakes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation.

    Objectives:

Students will be able to count numbers 1-20 using Ten-Frames. Students will be able to match Ten-Frames to written numbers.

    Materials:

Ten-Frame War cards (1-10 for each player) Ten-Frame puzzle pieces (1-20 Ten-Frames and 1-20 written number cards) Bingo cards (5 variations) Jumbo Ten-Frame cards (for bingo) Bingo markers or highlighters

    Rational:

This lesson is meant to be a review of counting with Ten-Frames. The activitiescontained in this lesson should only be presented to students when they can countwith Ten-Frames.

Ten-Frames are important because they teach students to practice one-to-oncecorrespondence. Ten-Frames also help children to decompose numbers into partsand help them to see basic facts such as 2+4=6. Students also learn how to

    regroup numbers when using Ten-Frames.

Station one: 10 Frame War (game)

Students will work with a partner to the play game. Each student receives Ten-Frame cards, numbers 1-10 shuffled. Both students place cards face down in front of them. Each student flips over one card from the top of their deck face up. The student with the larger number on their Ten-Frame takes both cards and

places them on the bottom of their deck.

Repeat until one player runs out of cards. The player with all of the Ten-Frames wins.

    Station two: Ten-Frame Puzzle Pieces

Students can work in pairs or small groups to complete this activity Students are given Ten-Frame cards 1-20 with corresponding number cards 1-20. The students have to match the Ten-Frame card with the corresponding written

    number card.

    Station three: Ten-Frame Bingo

This game should be played with a teacher and a small group of students. Each student will be provided with a bingo board containing numbers 1-20. The teacher will choose one jumbo Ten-Frame card and show it to the students. The teacher should allow students enough time to count the number of dots on the

    Ten-Frame card.

If a student finds the corresponding number on their bingo board, they will place amarker on that number.

The first player to get five numbers in a row (any direction) wins the game.Differentiation:

In kindergarten, students who are struggling with math often do not have one-to-one correspondence. This makes counting with Ten-Frames extremely difficult.

Students who do not yet have one-to-one correspondence, should be provided

with teddy bear counters. Students should place one teddy bear counter in eachsquare of the Ten-Frame as they count aloud. This ensures that the student iscorrectly counting the amount of dot in the Ten-Frame. Eventually, the teddy bear

counter should be removed and replaced by the students finger.

    Assessment:

Students should demonstrate one-to-one correspondence when counting Ten-frames by using their finger to point to each dot.

Students should be able to demonstrate recognition of written numbers bymatching them to corresponding Ten-Frames.
