DENVER SCHOOL OF INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABLE DESIGN Denver School of Innovation & Sustainable Design (DSISD) will open its doors to incoming 9th graders in the fall of 2015 and will be co-located with Denver School of Science and Technology at the Byers Campus in central Denver.

DSISD is Denver’s first competency-based high school, where students advance when they master a set of skills in each subject area. Each student’s daily schedule is unique, self-paced, and designed with support from a faculty advisor. The curriculum includes internships, independent studies, support from community mentors, and collaborative projects. DSISD is designed to prepare students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in college and their careers and play meaningful roles as citizens of the 21st century.

DSISD’S LEADERSHIP TEAM AND FACULTYDSISD’s leadership team and faculty have a wide variety of skill sets and extensive experiences that range from working in the business and engineering fields to teaching and leading in high-performing public, charter, and innovation schools. We too, are innovators, and have experience starting schools with personalized learning programs that break the mold of traditional schools by bridging learning to real–world experiences.

LEARNING AT DSISD Curriculum at DSISD is aligned to the Common Core and College Readiness standards. We provide a rigorous learning environment that ensures that students have a strong foundation in STEM subjects as well as the Arts and Humanities. Instruction at DSISD includes:

• Advisory and Mentorship: Students receive daily counseling, mentorship and support that monitors progress.

• Liberal Arts and STEM-based Core Classes: English Language Arts, Social Studies, Math and Science.

• Design Thinking Majors: As 11th graders, DSISD students will declare a major within STEM: Engineering OR Social Entrepreneurship, which will guide their 11th grade internship experience, their Senior Capstone project, and off-site college coursework.

• Concurrent Enrollment Classes: Offered through our partnership with colleges such as the Community College of Denver, University of Colorado Denver, and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs give students the opportunity to receive up to 45 college credits.

• Flex Block: Credit-bearing electives are offered at the end of each day. Offerings include: fine arts, software coding, world language, sustainable gardening, robotics, poetry slam, dance, and more. Many of these classes will be designed with student interests in mind. This will also be the time where students who want to play sports can participate through CHSAA Athletics at Denver South High School or their home school.

TRIMESTER EXPEDITIONSAt the end of every trimester, students will participate in a week-long “Expedition.” This will be an opportunity to apply learning and explore personal passions in a meaningful real-world setting. Expedition week will also be an opportunity for students to receive extra academic support as needed.

THE DSISD DIFFERENCEDenver Public Schools received a prestigious Opportunity by Design grant from the Carnegie Corporation to create DSISD, a new high school that is better aligned with the performance-based expectations of college and the career world. To prepare students to step into an increasingly competitive global economy, we will measure learning and ensure that students master skills and knowledge, rather than offering course credit based on the traditional measurements of grades and seat time.

DSISD empowers all students to take personal ownership of their educa-tion and reach their potential. Students and educators design personalized learning pathways based on a student’s individual strengths and interests. This allows students to start where they are and advance as they acquire new skills and knowledge and demonstrate an ability to apply them. Once students show mastery at one level, they can advance to the next without waiting for the next school year. This also means that if students have gaps in skills, they will be provided with the support they need to move forward.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSDSISD will be working closely with local colleges through our concurrent enrollment opportunities. We will also partner with area businesses and nonprofits on student mentorship and internship learning experiences.

JOIN USWe invite you to join Denver’s future innovators, leaders and positive change makers at DSISD. Please contact us to learn more about our program and how to enroll for the 2015–2016 school year.

Inspire Elementary 5500 Central Park Blvd., Denver, CO 80238 720.424.4850 | inspire.dpsk12.org

Inspire Elementary School is an exciting, new opportunity available to Kindergarten through 2nd grade students in the Stapleton area beginning in the 2017–2018 school year. Our name says it all. We’re creating a joyful environment designed to inspire a diverse group of young learners.

We believe the demands of the 21st century require us to cultivate problem solvers ready to step into a complex world.

The Inspire student will learn to engage in meaningful work, collaborating with others with empathy and optimism. We will challenge young learners to try new things and seek solutions, and be willing to take risks. Our students will emerge from Inspire Elementary with five competencies:

• Self-Awareness • Relationship Skills• Self-Management • Responsible Decision Making• Social Awareness

MISSION Inspire Elementary leverages children’s passions, talents, and learning styles to create an education that cultivates the whole child.

VISIONInspire Elementary prepares children to positively impact the future.

VALUES Inspire — Children think critically, engage in collaborative projects and become creators in their world. Children learn responsibility, resilience and grit while developing a growth mindset. Children think, create, innovate and become engaged as learners.

Innovate — Educators draw upon best practices and the latest tools. Classroom space and time is used flexibly to engage students in a joyful, authentic, and play-based learning environment.

Impact — Children engage in learning through an approach which helps them explore and develop personal interest areas while creating solutions to local community and global situations.

OUR MODELOur approach is drawn from research on best practices and innovation in education and takes place in 21st century classrooms that accommodate:

• Play-based learning that is physically active and integrates music and creative expression.

• Project-based learning where students collaborate with parents and community members to explore community and global challenges.

• Expeditionary learning that reaches beyond the classroom.

In addition to developing high levels of literacy and mathematical proficiency, students are exposed to arts, health and wellness, and world language.

Classes are multi-age. A student who is seven years old and struggling in reading, but advanced in math, may receive reading instruction in a small group of students ages five to seven and math instruction in a larger group of students ages seven to nine. Groupings are re-evaluated at regular intervals.

We use a modified block schedule to facilitate small “pull out groups” to differentiate instruction, and leverage computer-based programs for self-paced instruction when needed.

2017 LOCATIONDuring the 2017 school year, Inspire will be located on the Northfield High School campus, with a dedicated entrance from Central Park Boulevard. Inspire’s space will be separated from the high school so your children will have very limited interaction with high school students.

Construction of our permanent school for ECE – 5th Grade will begin in 2017. Our permanent home will be custom-designed to nurture students and spur curiosity and exploration. We’re excited about engaging parents, students and the community in that process.

MEET THE PRINCIPALDr. Marisol Enriquez brings more than 16 years of experience in public education as a literacy, math, and science teacher in both Spanish and English. Dr. Enriquez has opened two Aurora schools — a preschool through 8th grade, as well as a high school. Under her leadership, both schools experienced notable academic achievements. Dr. Enriquez has a pragmatic and thoughtful approach to leadership that fosters collaboration between students, staff, families and the community.

“Inspire Elementary leverages children’s passions, talents, and learning styles to create an education that cultivates the whole child, preparing them to positively inspire, innovate and impact the future.”

“Through excellent instruction, character and leadership develop- ment and strong relationships, Goldrick Elementary supports students as they grow as critical thinkers, risk takers and leaders in the community.”

A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL JESSICA RIDGWAY I am honored to be the principal at Goldrick Elementary School, and I am thrilled to work with our tremendous staff and community to provide a loving and joyous academic atmosphere where your children will thrive.

In my time as an assistant principal at STRIVE Preparatory–Sunnyside, I saw first-hand that children excel in a school that sets high expectations and provides personalized instruction. While I was at STRIVE, students achieved the highest statewide median growth percentile in math and led all DPS middle schools in academic growth at various points. Goldrick provides the necessary support for students to achieve similar success.

Our faculty and staff believe that every voice matters, every person is special and we are stronger when we work together. We believe that it is our responsibility to empower students by holding them to high expectations, anchoring academics in student heritage and learning about students’ cultures and values.

I invite you to visit our school, meet our teachers and staff, and learn more about our approach.

BUILDING THE GOLDRICK CULTURE Each morning students begin their day in a Goldrick family meeting. This is a time for students to develop social and leadership skills, build community and connect with school values.

All classes come together every Friday for a Community Meeting to celebrate the commitment, effort and success of the student body and honor students who are setting a strong example.

Our teachers go the extra mile every day to ensure students are successful. We believe deeply in small group instruction so we can provide the most personalized lessons and support for every child. Our focus does not end with academics. We know that whole-child programming best supports our students so we weave opportunities for character and leadership development throughout the day.

OUR MISSION: Through excellent instruction, character and leadership develop-ment and strong relationships, Goldrick Elementary will support students as they grow as critical thinkers, risk takers and leaders in the community.

OUR VISION: All Goldrick students are prepared to pursue their dreams and lead for a better tomorrow.

LEARNING AT GOLDRICKGoldrick students will be successful by developing problem solving skills, critical thinking skills and a passion for learning. All of our teachers are trained in academic standards, curriculum and data practices so that we are our best every day.

Goldrick uses a variety of learning models to develop a personalized learning plan for each student:

The Workshop Model is used during literacy and math instruction. Teachers intro-duce the lesson, students have independent work time and then come back together allowing them to reflect on what they learned.

Small Group Instruction has students engage in daily small group reading with the classroom teacher. During this guided reading time, students practice reading skills and strategies.

Project Based Learning in social studies and science provides students with op-portunities to follow their curiosity, collaborate with classmates and authentically connect learning to the real world.

Blended Learning builds skills in navigating technology. Students use a portion of their time to work individually at computers and complete online activities and projects.

FAMILY PARTNERSHIPS Family involvement is key to your child’s success. We offer multiple opportunities to get involved including:

• Collaborative School Committee • Parent/Family/Community Engagement Committee• Goldrick Parent Organization• Teacher Appreciation Committee• School and Classroom Volunteer Program

There are many more opportunities to engage with the Goldrick community through family nights, neighborhood events, community meetings, volunteer opportunities and adult classes.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS The support and programming provided by nonprofit and community organizations also contribute to our success. Partnerships with organizations like City Year, Playworks, Maria Droste Counseling, Bridge Project-Westwood and the Athmar Library support our students during the school day and after school.

Students of all backgrounds, ethnicities and cultures are encouraged to attend our school. We celebrate diversity and work hard to help our students link what they learn at school to their own backgrounds, families and communities.

Schmitt is committed to the personal growth of every child and to their physical and emotional well-being. Our goal is for our students to leave Schmitt as critical thinkers who possess the skills, habits, knowledge and mindsets necessary to achieve success. We know you send your child to school every day hoping they will have a good life and access to opportunities. Everyone at Schmitt shares that hope. We believe you will be proud to send your child to our school.

OUR MISSION: To ensure academic and life success for all Schmitt students, we focus on the whole child, building on the foundational strengths of our families and community.

OUR VISION: We provide a safe, joyful and stimulating environment so that all students are prepared for the opportunities of the future as critical thinkers and responsible, confident members of our community.

OUR CORE VALUES: Everyone in the Schmitt family — students, teachers and parents — approaches each day practicing these values:

• Perseverance: We never give up. • Responsibility: When there is a problem, we fix it. When we say we’ll do

something, we do it. • Empowerment: We are bold. We are confident. We believe in ourselves. • Communication: Our voice is powerful. Our words and actions enable

our success. • Family: We remember our roots. We are kind. We are family. • Curiosity: We never stop learning. We pursue our passions.

LEARNING PRACTICES Schmitt employs best-in-class teaching practices that have a proven record of success including:

Project Based Learning (PBL) where students explore real world challenges by participating in projects that integrate all content areas including reading, writing, math, technology, science and social studies.

Blended Learning incorporates direct and small group instruction with individual work at computers to complete online activities and projects.

ACADEMICSLiteracy Instruction: Students engage in 150 minutes of reading and writing instruction each day.

Mathematics Instruction: Mathematics uses the highly successful Bridges curriculum and is focused on deepening conceptual understanding and cultivating critical problem-solving skills.

Science: We use real-world examples and experiments to help children explore the world around them.

Social Studies: Students discover new cultures and share their own diverse backgrounds while developing a greater social awareness.

Language: Schmitt believes that bilingualism is an asset. To promote multi- lingualism, we have created a Multilingual Language Instruction (MLI) learn-ing block. For English language learners and those students who have not yet achieved proficiency in English, the MLI block is used for mandated English Language Development (ELD) time. We offer Spanish classes to students who are native English speakers or have achieved proficiency in English.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMSDenver Parks and Recreation offers the Social Opportunities, Academics and Recreation (SOAR) after school program that focuses on academics, sports and wellness, arts and culture, and community engagement.

America SCORES provides innovative soccer, poetry and service learning program-ming. Participating students engage in more than 60 hours of poetry workshops and more than 60 hours of physical activity through soccer and health games.

Additional after school programs include basketball, choir, arts, soccer and Girls on the Run.

COMMUNITY GARDENDuring the growing season our garden provides food for lunch and snacks. It also serves as an outdoor classroom for students to learn about food and the importance of community.
